AlwaysOn Async to Sync to Async

Hi all,
SQL Server 2012 or 2014, we can have primary replica and secondary replica in asyncronous mode, it is possible to switch from async mode to sync mode on the fly? And then back to Async? I mean with database in a production scenario under heavy load.

Yes, it is possible, but you should note there are good differences between both the modes wherein with async there are data loss possibilities and in sycn not.
Also if you change something on prod then you need to be cautious always as you do for a normal production environment and that also on very high transaction oriented environment.
So we need to be careful for sure.
Check below links to know more on it like how it effects the behavior and requirement:

  • Question on Quorum : Windows Server 2012 R2 + SQL 2014 AlwaysOn AG

    OS on all nodes : Windows Server 2012 R2
    SQL on all nodes : SQL Server 2014 CU2
    2 cluster nodes in primary data center and AlwaysOn AG doing Sync Transfer between these nodes with auto failover.
    2 cluster nodes in DR data center(Different subnet) and AlwaysON AG doing an Async Transfer between primary replica and these nodes with manual failover.
    As this is a multi sub-net cluster we are giving DR nodes 0 vote. 2 nodes on primary DC has votes and a file share on the primary DC has a vote.
    If the primary DC is gone,then should we re-assign node votes to the 2 nodes in DR site and again manually configure a file share witness and give it a vote?
    Whats the best strategy here? Any recommendation is highly appreciated.
    Thank you,

    Anup,
    Think if we have network issues between Primary DC and DR DC. DR node might think…Hey, I’m the only one running now. I can take all the resources. We do not want nodes in the secondary site to contribute to a decision to take the cluster offline
    when there is nothing wrong with the primary site. Do you mean to say Dynamic Quorum is smart enough to handle this situation?
    Is it smart enough on it's own? No. That's why someone has to determine which site they want to stay up.
    If you're using dynamic quorum, a new property was introduced called "LowerQuorumPriorityNodeID" which is set at the cluster level. Give it the node of one and only one of the secondary site servers. Set a fileshare witness (if possible) as the
    odd vote and make sure both sites can see it equally well. Set this property on the cluster for a node on the secondary site.
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dn265972.aspx#BKMK_TieBreak
    Assume that the fileshare goes down and you have 2 nodes at the local site and 2 nodes at the DR site. Suddenly, communicates between the two are severed. If you have dynamic quorum set and the property I mentioned above, the secondary site will shut down
    and the local site will stay up as the secondary site is set for a lower precedence.
    Please note, the only reason I brought this up was because you're on Windows Server 2012R2 as this is when it was first introduced.

  • AlwaysOn: primary sync or async?

    Hi, I succesfully setup an AlwaysOn between two sql2014 servers for development purposes. I configured both the primary and the secondary as synchronous. Now developers say that it is slower than one single server, and they are right because this configuration
    causes delays. So, I know I can set the secondary replica as asynchronous, but the wizard lets me to set also the primary as asynchronous, and I can't understand this. Honestly, when I set up the environment, I didn't focus on it but now I'm asking: why should
    the primary replica be async? If it is the primary (let's say the "most important") it should be sync by default. Who should be the primary async with?

    This is how is works for synchronous.
    Change is written to the log buffer on the primary. Change is written to the log buffer on the secondary/replica, Acknowledgement is sent back to the primary and the app. The app can then do more writes.
    For asynchronous a change is written to the log buffer on the primary. The app can then do more writes. The log buffer on the primary is read and changes are sent to the secondary log buffer.  Look at the image on this link for a more complete
    description of how it works.

  • In BPM sync/async Step , can you have different message schema?

    Scenario:
    File to XI to BPM to SOAP to RFC
    In order to trigger the  webservice , I use  a dummy file which will be polled at a certain frequency- once in 30 minutes in Test mode - this will call the Webservice. The answer of webservice is sent to RFC Async.
    so these  are the Repository objects I created :
    1. File  Outbound Async Message Interface- Output Message (File_Request_MT)
    2.File Abstract Message Interface-Output Message (File_Request_MT)
    3.Async/ sync bridge Abstract interface to call the Webservice
    4 Webservice Inbound Sync Message interface-  with both input and output message
    5.RFC Inbound Async message interface- input message (RFC_Request)
    6 RFC Abstract Async Message interface-input message (RFC_Request)
    BPM
    a) Receive step  which uses the  the object 2.
    b) Sync send which uses object 3
    c) Send  step which uses Object 5
    I am using a BPM to Receive the file data/ "request " by using the File abstract message interface
    Then use the  the object  3 to call the webservice in BPM .
    My question is on this step
    Can I have for  the abstract Interface(Object 3) the Request message  as  File_Request_MT and
    response message as (RFC_Request) ?
    I  use a message mapping  to map Input and Ouput message of Object 3 with Object 4.
    Thanks for  your insight

    I created a message type MT_SOAP_RESPONSE and used that in the BPM sync Send step as the Input message.
    b)Soap_Abs_Synch- I am using message types
    MT_File_request and MT_SOAP_Response From your reponse, it looks like you are suggesting to use
    Abstract Interfaces as Output message and Input Message, am I correct? Could you please tell me whether this has advantages over using message types MT_file_request and MT_soap_reponse? • Interface Problem Sync/Async (Open Bridge)

    Hello everyone,
    we made the migration from PI 7 to PI 7.01 EHP1 SP7.
    After this migration, the Sync interface with BPM (Opens Bridge), began to give trouble.
    It turns out that the interface in SMQ2 stand still for a long time, and after some time, timeout error occurs.
    In transaction SXMS_SAMON, I noticed that some processes are in timeout.
    It seems the problem is that the interfaces are entering the SMQ2, in PI can not sue for any reason.
    Has also altered the value of the parameter CHECK_FOR_MAX_SYNC_CALLS most did not.
    Does anyone have any idea how we can solve this problem ?
    Thank you all.
    Marlon

    Interface Mapping is between SOAP Request <--> Your XML message Request Response.
    Only one interface mapping is required.
    Message Interface Required
    1. SOAP Synchronous
    2. XML Request Async
    3. XML Resp Async
    4. XML Message Request Response Sync

  • Questions on async and sync's unit tests

    Hi All
    I write a API project and that have sync and async method.
    Then I also write a unit tests for them.
    What I want to ask is how to write them is better ?
    public abstract class ApiProxyBase
            protected async Task<T>
    GetDataAsync<T>(IRestRequest restRequest, bool ignoreSslCertificateValidation
    = true) where T
    : ApiResponse, new()
            protected T
    GetData<T>(IRestRequest restRequest, bool ignoreSslCertificateValidation
    = true  where T
    : ApiResponse, new();
       public class GameServerApiProxy : ApiProxyBase, IGameServerApiProxy
    async Task<GetGameRedirectResponse>
    GetGameRedirectAsync(GetGameRedirectRequest request) ;
        public GetGameRedirectResponse GetGameRedirect(GetGameRedirectRequest request)
        public class GameServerApiProxyTest : TestsBase
            [Test]
            public async void Can_Get_Game_RedirectUrl_Async()
                await LogIn();
                var response
    = await _gameServerApiProxy.GetGameRedirectAsync(new GetGameRedirectRequest());
                response.Url.Should().NotBeNull();
                LogOut();
            [Test]
            public void Can_Get_Game_RedirectUrl()
                LogInSync();
                var response
    = _gameServerApiProxy.GetGameRedirect(new GetGameRedirectRequest());
                response.Url.Should().NotBeNull();
                LogOut();

    I have an
    article on asynchronous unit testing. I'd say your async unit test method should be async Task and not async void. Other than that, it looks good. In particular, since your interface has both synchronous and asynchronous APIs, you should have tests for
    both of them.

  • How to handle more than one message coming from an async BPEL in a sync BPEL process?

    Here is the scenario,
    Sync process A is calling an Async process B and Async process B  is developed in such a way that it is returning more than one message to sync process A, how you will handle those messages in sync process A?

    As durga said, its a wrong design, you will have issues in real time. You wont get the response back most of the time. It can be otherway around, async is waiting for sync process.
    Change your design or provide what is your use case below, we can think of which design suits you.

  • Error from BPE Adapter using in Async Sync scenario

    Hi,
    I'm trying to use a Asyn Sync pattern with BPM:
    1)File adapter get a file from AS400, split it several XML messages and send to XI(Async)
    2)XI get each message and forward to BPM using XI adapter
    3)BPM has to send the message to R/3 via BAPI (Sync)
    4)R/3 reply the result message to BPM(Sync)
    5)BPM has to send the result message to e-mail system if an error had occurred in BAPI call (Async)
    When I send directly from File adapter to R/3 works like a charm, but when I want use the BPM, a soap header error says to me, that cannot identify a data type that I’m using in the message sent by File adapter.
    The error that I'm getting is BPE Adapter UNKNOWN_MESSAGE in soap header.
    Regards,
    Eduardo

    I got the same problem after installing new patches.
    This is what I had to do:
    Go to SXI_CACHE
    - Choose Business Processes
    - select your Buisness Process
    If your buisness process has Return Code 99
    - Click "Repeate Activate" button
    - On the next screen, click Activate again.
    This worked for me. Good Luck!

    Hi,
    Please go through all the settings for the modules once again - check for any space or other such character present or if some name is not correctly specified.
    If you still get the error, then make some change to the channel and re-activate.
    Also, make sure you are following the below sequence in the sender file channel-
    ModuleName                                                   Type              ModuleKey
    AF_Modules/RequestResponseBean      Local Enterprise Bean     1
    CallSapAdapter                                        Local Enterprise Bean     2

  • Dynamic configuration in Sync/Async bridge in JMS

    Hi
    Scenario:
    Portal sending request to JMS MQ and getting Response using sync/Async Bridge.
    I have to written a UDF which will capture the value for cust_uid from request mapping and store it in dynamic configuration
    And when the response comes from JMS MQu2026.this value gets populated in response mapping.
    I have tested the UDF in a dummy Soap2rfc scenario and its working fine.
    But when used in Sync/Async Bridge, the dynamic configuration  fails.
    For Sync/Async Bridge, there are 2 channels 1) Sender JMS 2) receiver JMS.
    The synchronous request is converted to an asynchronous request in the module processor and sent.
    The asynchronous system sends a response to a sender adapter. In the module processor of the sender adapter, this response is forwarded to the module processor of the original receiver adapter, where it is sent as a synchronous response of the waiting synchronous request.
    Please  suggest
    Regards
    Abhijit

    Hi Abhijit,
    Okay, so your data extraction/insertion is working fine for a simple synchronous request responser call.
    I suppose this is working fine because your receiver adapter copies some part of the request message (at least the dc header) to the response message. (But I don't think this always works for all the adapter types). It is not working for the sync-async bridge because there are two unrelated messages in this case.
    In order to copy the dc header from the first message to the second message, I think you can use the DynamicConfiguraitionBean module to store the dc header value in the module data and use this module again to recover it and set it to the second message. The whole process is somewhat complicated, but I will sketch the approach below.
    First, let's call the first use of DCB the store step and the second the recover step. These store and recover steps must take place in the same module sequence so that they can use the module data to pass data from the first message to the second message. Furthermore, the store step must occur after the cust_id value is extracted into the dc header. So, your configuration must be placed in the receiver adapter side. Assuming the request message with the filled dc header coming into the module sequence, the first DCB module can be placed before the ROB module to store the dc header value in the module data. And the second DCB module can be placed after the WRB module to recover the dc header value from the module data and set it the dc header of the response message.
    I hope this will work.

  • Sync/Async communication in JMS adapter without BPM

    Hi,
    as of SP19 XI's JMS adapter offers this new feature for Sync/Async communication through JMS Adapter modules instead of using a BPE.
    Now I would be interested to know if anybody has already successfully used this feature especially using WebSphere MQ as a JMS Provider (preferredly in the mode JMS Compliant: WebSphere MQ (non-JMS)).
    I experienced some issues with the XI Message ID being used as the JMS Correlation ID which is then mapped to the MQ Correlation ID being truncated after 24 characters. So I don't exactly know whether this is due to wrong setup or some general issues with this messaging system.
    Please let me know if you have any experiences at all with this new feature (please do not just post links to the following blogs, which I have thoroughly studied as well as the How-to Guide concerning this topic)

    Hi Peter,
    we working on the same Problem. Using IBM Websphere MQ as JMS Provider for the new feature: sync/async bridge without BPE.
    we switched on a high level trace for the adapter framework and saw a problem in the receiving Object of the JMS correlation id. The notify bean receives the JMS correlationid in hex format. so the beans have two different correlations, which could not find together.
    did you have any solution to get this new feature works with IBM Websphere ?

  • Sync/Async brdige error in BPM

    Hi,
       I am working on RFC-TO-Webservice scenario(Synchronous) and I am using the BPM in this scenario.
    In BPM just I have used 2 steps.
    Receive - Opened Sync/Async bridge
    Send - Synchrouns step
    Send - Cloase the Receive step
    Send - Asynchrous send step (to send the response to the file...).
    When I sent my RFC message from R/3 I am getting following error.

  • Call sync BPM from Async BPM - issue

    Hi,
    Outline: I'm trying to call a synchronous BPM from an asynchronous BPM in a PI 7.0 SP 14 system.
    When doing so i get the following error: Object CL_SWF_XI_MSG_BROKER method SEND_SYNCHRON cannot be executed.
    Now this is an oldie when searching the forums for this error message. I do however fail to see a solution to the problem.
    Note that the following notes (referred to in similar posts)
    - 710445
    - 718734
    - 830803
    are implemented since theese refer to older versions of PI.
    My scenario is very simple at present since i've startet from scratch again after getting the error. So what i do is:
    1) send async message to async BPM
    2) async BPM receives request
    3) async bpm transform request til sync_request.
    4) async BPM calls synchronous BPM
    5) sync BPM receives request and opens a async/sync bridge
    6) sync BPM maps request to response
    7) sync BPM sends response and closes async/sync bridge
    8) async BPM reveices sync_response
    9) async BPM sends sync_response to some application
    Now step 8 i never succesfully executed. Instead the error earlier described is triggered.
    For simplicity i use 1 and only 1 message type in all message interfaces. I have mapping between my synchronous interfaces outside of BPM.
    The synchronus BPM is executed just fine. The only issue is getting the reponse back to the asynchronous BPM.
    I am familiar with the following similar posts:
    - Object CL_SWF_XI_MSG_BROKER method SEND_SYNCHRON cannot be executed
    - Problem in posting the data in the syncronous mode
    but find them to be of no use.
    Hope someone can help.
    Best Regards,
    Daniel

  • Getting Time-Out Error in Sync-Async Bridge

    Hi All,
    My IP has a Sync-Async Bridge. I have a fork, two senders, two switchs and a transformation step inside the bridge.
    If XI takes much time to process the IP, the send step that closes sync-async bridge is not waiting for the message after a particular period and throws time out error to the sender.
    Is it possible to increase the waiting time for sync-async bridge?
    This IP works correctly 8 out of 10 times. Sometimes the message is sitting permenantly in the queue(smq2) and gives me system failure error.
    Can u tell me why this problem happening?
    Thanks & Regards,
    Senthil.

    Dear Michal/Senthil,
    Can you pl clear a confusion that i have had for ages...
    suppose there is a sync/async bridge ( i understand that it is used for sync business system too async BS communcation )
    where we have 4 steps
    sync receive - > async send -> async receive -> sync send..
    i do understand that async send and async receive are combined through correlation

  • Need help with Sync/Async BPM Scenario

    I have an R/3 RFC -> XI -> HTTP (to vendor A) scenario that is working fine.  It is a totally synchronous call event.  The Integration Directory pieces sit in a scenario named HotkeyOutbound.
    Now I need to create a process for RFC -> XI -> HTTP (to vendor Panduit).  The R/3 RFC is the same sender, but vendor Panduit only supports an asynchronous HTTP connection.  I followed the Sriram Vasudevan weblog on Sync/Async Bridge and created my BPM.  I am stuck on trying to determine what to set up in the Integration Directory.
    First off, should I be able to use the same HotkeyOutbound scenario as with vendor A so all hotkey stuff can stay together?  Or do I have to create a new scenario with a copy of the R/3 business system for the sender?  I moved forward with a new scenario (PanduitHotkeyOutbound).
    I also need to know how many config Agreements and Determinations to use.  The image at http://webpages.charter.net/kpwendel/keith1.html shows what I have so far.  Which are not needed?  What is missing?
    And I tried setting up an HTTP communication channel for outbound async to vendor Panduit and another for inbound async from vendor Panduit.  XI won't let me set up a sender HTTP channel.  Why not?
    Thank you in advance.

    I have yet to figure this out, and probably need to go back to my Integration Repository setup since my problems may start there.  This screenshot shows my Repository objects.

    HELP!  These are the steps I took, with questions embedded.
    (1) Created data type and message type for xml document (note that same format is used for request and reply).
    (2) Created PANRequestAbstractInterfaceSync (abstract and sync) for first part of Integration Process.  Should the input message be the RFC or XML message type?
    (3) Created PANRequestAbstractInterfaceAsync (abstract and async) for 2nd part of Integration Process.
    (4) Created PANResponseToBPM_MessageInterface (outbound async) for interface back into XI from partner. Is this needed?
    (5) Created PANHotkeySync_to_Async_IntProc Integration Process to handle sync to async bridge.
    - Wondering why PANRequestAbstractInterfaceAsync is the only message interface available when I make container object (PANMessage)?
    (6) Created two Message Mappings to handle RFC data to XML mappings (outbound RFC-> XML and inbound XML -> RFC).
    (7) Created Interface Mapping that includes both the Request and Response message mapping programs from step six.  Source is the RFC and Target is PANRequestAbstractInterfaceSync.
    - Do I need another interface mapping with Source being PANRequestAbstractInterfaceAsync and Target being the RFC?
