Am I able to use both Carbonite and Time Machine as back-ups for my iMac?

HI,
I have a iMac, and I have recently recently completed the initial back up for Carbonite. I also have a 2TB Seagate external hard drive that I would like to use with Time Machine. I am wondering if I am able to use both Carbonite and Time Machine simultaneously.

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
As bdmarsha says, yes, you can run both simultaneously.
But one caution; there are some reports here that some of the online backup apps keep some fairly large, frequently-changing files on your system. Time Machine will back them up along with everything else, which can take some extra time and space on your TM drive.
After your initial TM backup, see how large the incremental backups are (by watching the progress bar and info on the +Time Machine Preferences+ window). If those seem too large for the changes you've made since the previous backup, see #A2 in [Time Machine - Troubleshooting|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/Troubleshooting.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum), for a couple of apps that will show exactly what was backed-up.
If you find such things, you can exclude them from TM backups, per #10 in [Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions|http://web.me.com/pondini/Time_Machine/FAQ.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).

  • On my iphone4 i need to be able to use both TDS and Yahoo e-mail.  TDS works only sporadically.  For instance, today I was able to both send and receive, then an hour later could not send.  got the message that the server was not recognized.

On my iphone4 I need to be able to receive and send both TDS and Yahoo e-mail accounts (I also need to access from my Macbook Pro and my HP desktop).  I have NO problem with Yahoo, but with TDS, the e-mail seemed to work on my phone.... and then it didn't.)  In adding the TDS account, I chose "other" ( TDS is somehow accessed on the back end through gmail).  For the incoming server I used the Incoming Sever Name of pop.gmail.com and the Outgoing Mail Server as smtp.gmail.com.  I have using SSL "on" and the server port is 995.  Is this setup correct for TDS?

FYI: POP will by default, delete messages from the server after downloading them (This applies to most pop clients, computer or mobile). POP is old tech and is not recommended if IMAP or Exchange are available. The default when setting up a g-mail type account is IMAP. Full synchronization with the server. You may also be able to set it up as an Exchange account, allowing for push e-mail and sync of calendars and contacts as well. See the Gmail help pages for instructions.

  • Using an external HD for both storage AND Time Machine?

Bear with me guys, I'm not sure where to put this question. I figured that because my Macbook Air (and it's limited storage space) was the reason for my needing an external HD I thought this would be the best place.
My MBA has run out of storage and I bought a Seagate External HD to move my stuff onto. I guess my question is: What's the best way to combine the external HD with the MBA? Here are a few of the things on my mind:
-Most of the space is taken up by my user folder right now such as itunes, photos, etc. If I copy that folder to the external drive it would alleviate a large part of my issue, at least for the time being. Eventually I will hit the storage capacity as I add applications over time I guess, so this is a temporary solution (although I free up 27gb of space this way). Can I designate a folder on the external drive as the default for programs like imovie and iphoto like I can with itunes?
-I KNOW there is a way to set the external drive as some kind of default drive but is this feasible? It would be a hinderance if I needed to have it connected at all times to access even applications (which I assume to be the case?
-I also wondered about partitioning the external HD and using one partition for additional storage and the other for time machine? It's a 1TB hard drive, and I figure I could make a 100GB partition to use with time machine (my MBA only has a 64gb capacity) and use the other 900GB for files. Is this even possible or does time machine need it's very own separate drive?
Anyway, this doesn't necessarily ask many specific questions and I apologize if it appears a little disjointed. I'm looking for help and opinions on the best way to use this new piece of equipment to compliment my MBA. Any thoughts are appreciated.

While it is possible to partition an external drive and use one partition for files and the other for Time Machine, there's actually very little point in doing so. The reason is that in your scenario, you'd be storing all your files on the external, meaning that pretty much all there would be on your MBA internal drive is MacOS and your applications - the very things you can easily restore in the event of failure - while all your files would be on the external, where they are not being backed up.
It is also possible to use an external drive as the boot drive for the MBA (easiest done by cloning the internal drive to a partition on the external, and then setting that partition as the startup drive in the Startup Disk preference pane) but that would still require you to wipe at least some of your files from the internal, and mean that the contents of your external drive are not being backed up. It would also mean that your MBA would run pretty slowly when booted from the external.
Rather better, in my view, would be to use the external as the primary store for all non-essential files - your complete iTunes library and all your documents, files, video, photos etc, and then copy back to the MBA just those items you actually need for any day or week's activities. Then get a second external to use for backing up the first!

  • When using a Seagate 1T external hard drive and Time Machine to back up hourly, if I delete photo files from the Mac hard drive before the next back up, are these retained on the Seagate drive or will they be lost (overwritten) in the next backu in the ne

Does Time Machine erase previously saved files if, say, photos are deleted from the Macbook upon the next update, or will they be stored indefinately despite the current status of the files stored on the computer? Eg. can I bckup photo files to a Seagate 1T disc and then delete them to make more room on the computer in the knowlwdge that they are always going to be on the Seagate disc? Sorry if this is very elementary but I have not used a back up before like this, and am not sure how successive backups are overlaid or retained. Thanks!!

TM is not designed to do what you ask. As Allan wrote TM is an incremental backup not an archival solution.
If you delete a file from the HD it will eventually be removed from the TM backup (if it ever makes it on to the backup at all).
How long before it is removed depends on a number of factors, TM disk drive size being one factor but not the only one.
Material that is impossible to replace and is important to you (image files usually fitting that description) need to be backed up to as least one other drive and preferably more for long term storage.

  • User Not Found Using Migration Assistant and Time Machine

My iMac running Leopard kernel panicked which forced me to do a hard reset. After rebooting, the account I was logged in as disappeared. Fortunately, that wasn't the admin account. I logged into my admin account and thought I would use Migration Assistant to recreate the missing account (I did run Disk First Aid first to ensure the hard drive was in good working order). However, Migration Assistant does not list the missing user account when reading my Time Machine backup. I do see the user if I go directly into into Time Machine. I'm guessing that Migration Assistant may only be looking at the most recent backup which obviously doesn't contain the missing user.
Suggestions on how to restore the missing user or how to get Migration Assistant to read all of the users in my Time Machine backups?

    Correct.
Suggestions on how to restore the missing user or how to get Migration Assistant to read all of the users in my Time Machine backups?
How many backups were done after the problem occurred? One possibility would be to delete those backups (see #12 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip,* also at the top of this forum), so the last one has the missing user's data, and Migration Assistant can find it. If you do that, once everything's properly restored, boot up from your Leopard Install disk, then reboot normally. That will trigger a "deep traversal" in the next backup, where TM will compare everything on your system to it's backups, thus assuring that nothing was lost via the earlier deletions.
Another would be to do a full restore from Time Machine, per #14 in the FAQ.

  • Error using migration assistant and time machine

Daughter dropped water on our old macbook pro.  Got a new one and trying to restore using backups to our time capsule, but we are receiving this error using the migration assistant: "Make sure that all of your network devices are connected and turned on. It appears that some backups are already in use. If you don't see the backup you need, make sure it is not currently mounted by another machine and try again."
any suggestions on how to transfer the data from time capsule to new macbook?

Do you see the backups in the Select Your Disk window?
If so, can you connect to them?
Make sure Time Machine is OFF on all Macs on your network.  If any backups are trying to run, cancel them.  If they won't cancel after a few minutes, see #D6 inTime Machine - Troubleshooting.
Also be sure no other Mac is looking at them.  If you continue to get that message, disconnect all users, per #C12 in the same article.
If none of that helps, the backups may be damaged (could have happened when the old Mac died).  Try to Repair them, per #A5 in Time Machine - Troubleshooting

  • Relocating music files after using migration assistant and time machine

    Hello
I recently purchased an i7 MBP because my previous 15 in was stolen. Luckily I had a time machine backup of the old machine - my previous MBP was the Intel 2 Core Duo model just before the refresh to the i5/i7s
So far what I did is ran migration assistant to bring my files over
Everything seems to be fine, except when I got to iTunes much of my music is listed but I get the exclamation mark symbol next to most of the music and movies and apps
I am trying to figure out how to fix this and relocate my files
I know I could access my time machine backup by browsing other time machine disks, but I can't browse the music folder in a previous backup because I don't have the permisson to access it
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

    Victor:
If you correctly transferred your music files the problem is with your iTunes Library file.
Open iTunes and quickly press the option key. A window will show to ask you to select the library file. Browse for it and it should fix the problem.

  • Time Machine prepares back ups of 10GB and more with very little activity on my computer

I have an early 2008 iMac with a Samsung 750GBHD, and I am using a Time Machine since 4 years ago working pretty well.
As of beginning 2014 it started to show many errors but at the end of the day there were 1 or 2 back ups done. During this August I realized that back ups were of a size of 10Gb and more nearly every day while the activity of the computer was very light, internet and mail. I cut an anti virus that was working on the background with no success. There is no virus activity, the comp is clean.
What could be the reason for this abnormal activity?

Only way to find out is to analyse what is actually causing the large backups.
Have you installed the widget yet??

Or you can get a software app that tells you what TM is doing since it is hardly forthcoming.

I recently replaced my MacBook Pro's hard drive with a larger HD.  After replacing HD and making sure all my data is operating correctly, I noticed my Time Machine is not backing up.  I was hoping it would continue to backup daily as soon as I was back on my home network but no such luck.  Does anyone know how to re-establish my conncection and hopefully start where I left off with daily backups?  Thx

  • Been away for 4 months- just come back and time machine wont back up

Ive just been traveling for 4 months and left my 1TB Time Machine @ home.
I just came back - plugged it in so that time machine could do a back up but, it says it can't, because it has been over 127 days - or something like that.
Now it says it need 521GB
My last backup was 458GB - only 63GB DIFFERENCE
It seems that it is now trying to write a whole new backup instead of adding to my previous ones.
Also I can't enter time machine and browse my old backups.
Please I don't want to have this problem every time i get home- why can;t i just plug it in and backup?

Yes, that can happen. See #D3 in the Time Machine - Troubleshooting *User Tip* at the top of this forum.
Also I can't enter time machine and browse my old backups.
Most likely, TM deleted all but your most recent backup trying to make room for the new full one. But if you see no backups at all, try the Browse option in #E2 of the same Tip.

  • Need to be able to use both SSO and manual login to the WAS

    Hi,
we are currently on NW7 SP20 (SPS18) but we are still using 3.x queries and web applications extensively. We have SSO enabled on all systems and that works fine. However, this does not give us the possibility to test for example roles by logging on as a test user. How can we keep SSO but also allow us to log on as a different user to the WAS when running queries or web templates.
    Typical test scenario:
    1) Open WAS3.x or Query Designer 3.x and log on as a test user
    2) Close all browser windows
    3) Execute web template or query in browser
    4) At this point SSO takes over and logs the tester on as him/herself. What we would like here is to have the option of either logging on manually /by for example clicking a log on button) or using SSO (say by not clikcing the login button within 5 seconds or clikcing a SSO button). How can we get this to work?
    Kind regards
    Kenneth Eriksen

    Actually, we want both...
Most of the time, SSO is desired, but when testing role changes etc we need to be able to log on with a test user.
    The desired scenario:
When you try to run a web report/query and have not logged on, the system should offer you two options:
    1) Manual log on
    2) Single sign on
If you wait for a specified time (say 3 seconds) without selecting an option then SSO is used automatically (to avoid having to select SSO every time you need it).
If you click manual log on then you should be prompted for a username/password and be logged on as the specified user.
Can this be done at all?
    Kind regards
    /Kenneth

  • Wifi using Treandnet USB and Time Machine on older iMac G4.

I have a 1st Generation Time Capsule, and older iMac G4 the cool one that looks like a lamp. I just bought a Trednet TEW-644UB Wireless N USB Adapter so that I can get wifi on my older mac from my time capsule. I installed the mac software from the disk that came with it, but there are no further instructions and I can't get it to work. Can someone walk me through the set up?
When I boot up it automatically opens the Trednet Wireless Utility. I can see my wireless network on there listed under SSID, the BSSID says 00-21-E9-B8-A4-1... The signal is 100%. The Channel is 1. Authentication says WPA-PSK, Encription says TKIP;AE, and the network Type says infrastructure. I'm pretty sure the setting are wrong but I'm not sure what to set them too.
    Thanks

I called Trednet and all I needed to do was hit the activate button. Works great... and very inexpensive.

  • Can I use both Wifi and a Lan connection at the same time?

With me back in the dorms I have been limited to a slower connection than what I would like. Now we are able to use both Wifi and a Lan line so I was wondering to somewhat "double" my speed if there was any way to use both connections at the same time.
Now I know that you can have both plugged in at the same time, I guess what I'm asking is, is there a way that I could set programs to use one or the other? Or some kind of virtual desktop that is set to use the other connection or anything that would allow both be used at the same time.
Or am I just wishing for something that doesn't have any possible way to work?
    -nathan
    MacBook pro 2.16 C2D 2gb ram   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You can use both at the same time, but not gor Internet access if that's what you're asking.
Now there is a thing called Link Aggregation, which combines a number of interfaces for speed/redundancy, but it really only works locally, and then only with ALL special equipment in the route, and most likely OSX Server involved.
    Sorry.

  • I want to upgrade CS5.5 to CS6. Will I be able to use both programs? Or just CS6?

This might be an obvious answer! But I have a full retail version of 5.5. A publisher I work for have started using CS 6 so I need to get it. But I need to continue using CS 5.5 as well for other clients. If I upgrade to 6, do I lose 5.5? Or do I need to buy the full CS 6 license? The issue is really with InDesign… I need to be able to use 5.5 and 6 depending who I work for… and they don't want to muck about with IDML files… just too much hassle.

Thanks Mylenium… so when I pay a reduced amount to upgrade my 5.5 to 6 do you know what happens? Is the original 5.5 serial number applied to both programs… and both 5.5. and 6 can be fully used side by side? Or does 6 come with a new serial? I'm just a little unclear how the specific 'upgrade' license works and can't seem to find any info on it.
What I ideally want is to run 5.5. and 6 on both my Macs without paying the hefty price for the complete 6 suite - just the upgrade price (as I already own 5.5)

  • How do i use both ssd and hdd drives on macbook pro together

have a mid 2012 macbook pro 15 inch. I replaced hdd drive with ssd drive and put hdd drive in optic bay. Was wondering what the best way to use both together is

Use your SSD for your system, applications, working projects, as a scratch disk (if you're editing photos or video, for example) and you can use the HD to store you user files (Documents) and infrequently accessed files.
The only disadvantage that I see with a setup like yours is backups. You can use clones to backup both drives, and Time Machine to - at least - backup your boot drive, but you're going to run the risk of losing data if you don't clone your HD. That's a minimum of two clones for one computer (I shouldn't be one to be talking about excessive clones, though, as I keep three clones of my SSD, one clone of my 2TB 'working' drive, and two Time Machine backups of my SSD).
But that's the way I'd treat the drive in the opti-bay - just as an 'internal' external drive.
