AMD R9 270X and Asus 1440p monitor Unrecognized Through DP, OK w/ HDMI

I upgraded from Sapphire AMD R7 260X to Sapphire R9 270X and am having issues with the DisplayPort. I get the wrong resolutions and unknown monitor only when connecting through DP, but everything works fine through HDMI. I am using an ASUS PB278Q 27" monitor at 1440p. The DP worked fine on the R7 260X. I was able to manually add my resultion using this xrandr guide but of course this does not persist through reboot,  is quite annoying, and should not be necessary. Does this sound like a hardware bug to anyone? Should I be contacting Sapphire? This issue persists through the 3.19.3 kernel.

So today I tried the 4.0-rc6 kernel using the linux-git pack in the AUR repository. I can now use my DisplayPort! However, `get-edid` still throws errors and my display is 'unknown' to Cinnamon.
Update: It's not always reliable. Sometimes I reboot and it's back to it's old tricks

    This is still a problem with the 3.19 kernel in testing as of today.

  • Weird problem with Macbook Pro 15" and Asus PB278 monitor

    Hi there
    I recently bought a brand new MacBook pro 15" the one with a dedicated nvidia 750 vid card. However I'm facing weird problems while connecting it to a external monitor Asus PB278 (1440p monitor). I use a mini display port to display port cable.
    My problem is: Sometimes it works perfectly, but then if I put the laptop to sleep, sometimes it won't recognise the screen at wake up, at first I tried to restart the system, power on and off the monitor, connecting and reconnecting the cable... nothing worked. I even bought a expensier cable thinking it was probably a low quality cable. I found that then only way to fix this is to connect the monitor with a mini display to HDMI cable I have (won't support over 1080p), and then put the mini display to display port cable again... it is freaking bizarre.
    This is very frustrating, I live outside the US and while the retailer will honor the guarantee I'm not sure if this is a Software or Hardware problem, It will take them about 3 weeks to replace my system which is unfortunate due to I have plenty of work to do. I don't want to send it on guarantee just to find out hey... display recognition is broken again. My questions are:
    Is there a way to know if this is a hardware or software problem?
    I've heard Yosemite is having some issues regarding external displays, is this one of those?
    Have you found yourself experiencing this problem? Could you fix it?

    Thank you for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
    It appears that you've discovered unusual behavior with your MacBook Pro and an external display, where you need to temporarily connect a different display adapter before you can use your Asus PB278 again.
    I can offer some additional tips to help resolve or further isolate the issue you're seeing.
    First, try the following resets to see if they eliminate the behavior:
    You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.
    Next, if the issue occurs again, try restarting your Mac into Safe Mode:
    Start up in Safe Mode.
    From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
    Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
    Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
    Restart your computer.
    You can find the steps above in this article:
    Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays - Apple Support
    If your display is recognized in Safe Mode, or after restarting again, the issue may be due to a software conflict.
    Another suggestion mentioned in the article above is to try a different type of display adapter, such as a Mini DisplayPort to Dual Link DVI adapter.
    If the issue persists, you can also back up your data, erase your hard drive, and reinstall a fresh copy of OS X Yosemite.

  • 890FXA-GD65 with AMD Phenom II 1100T and Asus Radeon 6950 No Video Signal

    I just did a new computer build with an MSI 890FXA-GD65 motherboard AMD Phenom II 1100T processor and Asus Radeon 6950 graphic card.
    I have a SATA hard drive and optical drive. Memory is Corsair XMS3 4GB PC10666 DDR3 1333MHz 4096MB.
    When I turn the system on I have no video signal so I can't see bios. I tried taking everything apart and rebuilding and still nothing.
    The power is on to the motherboard and graphic card. The motherboard has 2 LED indicators on.
    I am a newbie with the new computer build and need some help. I accidentally pressed the clear CMOS while the power was on. I have no idea if this is going to mess up the motherboard.
    Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    I could not locate this on this specific motherboard. The one issue is that there is a CLR CMOS button on the back and I pressed this when power was on .
    I know there is another way to clear the cmos with the jumpers but I didnt do that .
    Anyway motherboard still powers up. I took it to a tech to check it out. Don't know anything as of yet. Thanks.

  • AMD R9 270x Volcano Strange Lockups

    I just finished building my new system with an Asus M5A99FX (AMD FX 8350) and a Asus R9 270x video card.  I use fluxbox for my WM.  I am using the two DVI ports (D and I) rather than the display port or the HDMI port.
    After stuggling with UEFI I have pretty much everything up and running, but I have a problem with the system locking up. 
    So far I have found 2 ways that can lock the system up consistently:
    1.  Open XMMS and right click inside to pull up the menu.  Originally I wanted to add the Playlist to the screen, but everytime I right clicked to try and add the playlist the system would lock up.
    2.  Running xscreensaver settings and clicking on previews of different screen savers.
    I have conky running in the background, so I am monitoring CPU, Mem usage, network usage, and hard drive usage.
    When I say locking up I mean that I am unable to do anything.  My conky is still working, and there is no difference in CPU, Mem, Network, or hard drive usage.  Also my mouse continues to work, meaning that I can move the mouse around my screens.  Although sometimes the mouse curosr flips, so rather than the arrow pointing left, it points right.
    But even though I can move the mouse I am unable to right click on anything to pull up a menu, nor am I able to click on another window, or scroll any other window.  I am also unable to scroll through any of the desktops.  My custom keyboard shortcuts also do not work.
    Pressing CTRL ALT DEL, does nothing, along with CTRL ALT F1.  The only way I can get the system to respond is to power cycle the PC.  Pressing the power button does not appear to force a shutdown, so I actually have to power off the system and power it back on.
    I tried digging through my journalctl but I did not see anything around the times of the crashes, nor did I see anything in my dmesg.  Although I probably need to look at both closer.  Also I am not really seeing any errors in my Xorg.0.log.  Currently I am not running an xorg.conf, but I may build one so that I don't have to keep running xrandr for my dual monitor setup.
    There also appears to be an issue with artifacts.  If I bring a window too close to my wbar and I hover over my wbar causing the icons to grow, I will lose a chunk of my window where the wbar overlapped.  The only way to get the chunk back is to close and reopen
    I also have a strange problem inside of Geany.  When ever I press CTRL F to find something in a text file, I have to wait a second or two for the search box to appear.  Normally I press CTRL F and start typing, but when I do that now I can get around 5 to 6 characters typed into the document before the search box appears.
    I've been Googling around for the last hour, and I haven't really found anything as of yet that explains this.  My assumption is there is an issue with my 3D acceleration which is caused because my card is too new to have proper driver support.  But I am unsure.
    Since I am able to recreate the error repeatedly, are there any troubleshooting steps that I can take to narrow down the problem and verify?  Or am I stuck waiting for the Volcano drivers to come down the pipe?
    Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Alright, all of my copies have finished and I did a little more testing.
    To lock up the system I started xscreensaver and clicked on Settings.  I then went down to the XSpiroGraph and clicked on it to see the preview.  This locked up the system, except the mouse was still moving.  Orignally I thought that nothing was happening, but while I was running my tests, I noticed that the xscreensaver preview window was populating with the XSpiroGraph screensaver, although it was extremely slowly.  It was taking around 60 - 90 seconds for one line to be drawn.
    While in xscreensaver settings, the UnknownPleasures preview works at normal speed and just fine, nothing is locking up.
    As for the tests, the lights on my keyboard did not blink during this test.  Although I forgot to test the caps and num locks. 
    I was still able to ping the PC, and I was able to SSH into the locked up PC as well.  The SSH appeared to be working without issue.  I checked journalctl and there was nothing in there, other than my SSH connection.  I'll run a verbose in a couple of minutes.  Also there weren't any new logs in dmesg during the lockup.
    I tried to do pkill xscreensaver, but nothing happened.  xscreensaver was still running on my screen but it wasn't part of of ps -ef thorugh SSH.  So the process was killed, but nothing changed on my monitors, and the PC was still locked up.  The preview window was still slowly populating as well.
    Finally, I decided to just do a reboot through SSH and it rebooted without issue.  So now I know how to gracefully shutdown the PC while it is locked up.
    On another note, I run Synergy through SSH on this PC (it's the server).  When the lockup occurred there were no errors on the client or server for Synergy, but I was unable to use my mouse or keyboard on my other PC.  The SSH tunnel that I use for Synergy continued to be up and running.
    Even though I now have a better grasp, I still do not know what to do next.  Without an error message, or a log for me to check, I don't know where to go from here.  I will try locking up the system again, and then run journalctl in verbose and see if it tells me anything, but past that I will try to Google again and see if I can come up with anything.
    Any suggestions?

  • R9 270X Gaming 2G - Multiple Monitor Issues

    I recently purchased two MSI R9 270X Gaming 2G graphics cards and three Asus VS248H monitors.
    I want to run the cards in Crossfire and activate Eyefinity which I understand requires the third monitor to be plugged into the DisplayPort using an active adapter.
    The issue: I am unable to change the resolution (from 640 x 480) on any monitor that is NOT plugged into DVI-I or HDMI on the graphics card closest to the CPU.
    Windows is able to identify the monitor plugged into the DVI-I port as VS248 however the monitor plugged into DVI-D (on the same card) or DisplayPort is identified as a Generic Non-PnP Monitor with the resolution drop down box greyed out.
    I have tried the following:
    - swapping the graphics cards
    - swapping all of the connections to monitors
    - disabling and re-enabling crossfire
    - uninstalling and re-installing drivers; tried Catalyst Software Suite 13.9, 13.10, 13.11, 13.101 (on MSI's website).
    I am currently running the latest Beta drivers because of fixes to the screen moving.
    I have been uninstalling drivers using Driver Fusion Premium. Also tried uninstalling using ATIman however the result is the same.
    I have spent about 20 hours trying to resolve this issue so if anyone has any suggestions it would be greatly appreciated. I am honestly at the point that if I can't resolve this issue I will be returning both of the cards for another brand.

    Perhaps your BSOD is related to the BSOD I got from not having updated my drivers thoroughly, and left old driver fragments.

    As far as the two problems I had with the power plan. They are resolved now.
    After updating to the latest Intel Management Engine Drivers, the monitor is responding, as it should.
    What is preventing the system from entering sleep mode, is unrelated to the GPU or any other hardware for that matter. Embarrassingly I did not run the CMD command "powercfg -requests" to find out, before I posted the question.
    It seems I am a little too trigger happy posting questions here  It is my internet connection that is preventing the system from entering hybrid sleep mode.

    I am not good at RAM setting but the 'Timings Table' shows there is XMP-1600 profile available so I believe it would be enough to turn on that memory profile in BIOS.

    Firstly, let me apologise. You probably see a lot of these questions. However, I've had a look through and I haven't been able to find a solution to my problem.
    I have an '09 27" iMac which I use for the creative side of my life. (I'm training to be an architect.) However I'm also really into gaming, and so I've just bought a brand new PC. The GPU is a GeForce GTX 780 Ti with two DVI, an HDMI and a DisplayPort output. My iMac has a Mini DisplayPort jack.
    I'm basically wondering if there's any way of using the iMac as a 1440p monitor for this new PC. I tried connecting the PC to the iMac with an HDMI cable using an HDMI to MDP adapter and hitting cmd+f2 on the iMac to initiate Target Display Mode, but that hasn't worked. I'm now thinking of buying an HDMI to MDP direct cable to see if that works but I'm also wondering if a DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable might work too? I was under the impression that the 780 Ti had a MDP output but the version of mine only has the outputs listed above.
    Is any of this even possible? I've heard reports in the past of people having success with MDP to MDP from PC to iMac but of course I can't do that. Am I wasting my time and money here?
    At present I'm using my 37" HDTV as a monitor on my desk but as you can imagine, it's far too big to use in the long run! It's annoying because the 780 Ti is capable of running max settings easiliy in 1440p and having to downgrade from the iMac to a 1080p HDTV is disheartening.
    Any help would be very greatly appreciated!

  • Need help with a Asus 27" monitor with webcam problem.

    Need help with a Asus 27" monitor I bought.  Model VK278Q.  The issue is that the webcam will not work properly.  Various applications can see the webcam, but I just get a black box.  From what I have read, the issue seems to be that there are no official drivers for the webcam. 
    I thought someone in this community might be able to offer some help before I return the monitor. I read somewhere that it may be possible to tweat the OS so that the iSight software will work for the monitor webcam.

    Eureka! You now understand the situation.
    Even the old standard for Mac OS X drivers for non-compatible cams, macam, says that it has no driver for ASUS (20") monitor camera.
    The macam status shows:
    not working (no documentation)
    With no working driver for the 20" ASUS, it is not surprising that there is none for the 27" either.  There may be good reason that ASUS won't (or can't) offer either the technical documentation or a Mac driver for their monitor's inbuilt webcam.  However, they apparently do not publish that information. 
    If ASUS Technical Support cannot provide the driver you need for OS X, the ASUS will continue to be a ridonculous (sic) monitor whose webcam will not work with your OS X Mac.  The only other simple fix I can think of is to use the ASUS with a different PC that is compatible with this monitor and its inbuilt webcam.  What you do is certainly your choice.

  • X240 (Win 8.1) w/ Ultra Dock and two external monitors connected via DisplayPort problem

    I'm having trouble making this combination work. This Ultra Dock does have two DP connectors, computer sees both external monitors (HP ZR24w) but I cannot get any picture on both at the same time using DP. Sometimes one display does work, but that is not always working.
    When I connect same monitors via VGA/DSUB and DP (with Lenovo DPtoDVI converter) I can get this to work - both same time - , but I'd prefer them both digital and both native DP as both monitors do have that port.
    Ultra Dock does already have the latest firmware and this problem seems to not relate to the flickering problem with T440 etc. X240 is also running latest UEFI/BIOS and I've also tried latest Intel Beta display driver, no effect.

    If you want to drive the monitors in the manner stated, the BIOS Display property must be set to Discrete and the auto detection below it must be disabled.

  • HT201177 Mac Mini and Asus VE258Q Issues

    Just purchased a Mac Mini. When I hook it up to an Asus VE258Q monitor via HDMI, it looks great until it randomly goes dark for a few seconds, then comes back on (normal). This happens randomly, could be every 30 seconds, a minute, no pattern.
    Any ideas?

    I've seen similar results with bad cables or incompatible connections. HDMI is a somewhat complex connection with the copy protection and such, so it's possible that you just have an incompatible (or barely compatible) pair of devices. I'd first just try another cable to rule the cable out. If you still have problems, next step is to try a different connection type. I use a DisplayPort to DVI cable to my HP 24" LCD which works great. It looks like your LCD is newer and has a native DisplayPort connection, so you might be able to use a DisplayPort to Mini DisplayPort cable, which is slightly simpler from a signal connection perspective (as far as I understand it).   • 2 new Asus AH236H monitors. How to ?

    I have two ASUS AH236H monitors. I have a new MacMini Funning 10.8.3.
    Main monitor is on MacMini HDMI to HDMI.
    Second monitor is is MacMini Thunderbolt to HDMI.
    I want to have main one in Landscape mode and the second monitor in Vertical Portrait mode. But when I select it, and then apply the 90° option, they both are in Verticle mode.
    How can I get them to be independent.

    To load it enter (as root)

    Hi there,
    just bought a MSI Geforce GTX 660 TF 2GD5/OC with and Asus M5A99X EVO R2.0 mainboard. Installed Windows 7 x64 without any problems. All the drivers work but when I try to install the Nvidia drivers it just says there isn't a compatible graphics card available. Upgrade my motherboards BIOS to 1708 which is the latest one. Still didn't make it work. Hope that anybody can help me because I want to start gaming!

    Oracle Parallel Server and TP Monitors
    ======================================
    How does Oracle Parallel Server (OPS) work with TP Monitors?
    If you are using Oracle-managed transactions, there are no special
    considerations. But if you are using TPM-managed transactions, and
    thus need to use the XA interface, then Oracle requires release 7.1.3
    or later and a special version of the Distributed Lock Manager, called
    the session-based lock manager. This version of the DLM is not yet
    available for all platforms. To understand this restriction, let's take
    a look at one of the technical details of XA.
    The XA specification requires that the Resource Manager be able to
    move a transaction from one process to another, and even to be
    able to commit in a separate process. In Oracle, transactions are
    attached to sessions, so that means that we also have to be able to
    move sessions. Therefore, the session/transaction can't have any state
    which is tied to a particular process. The first generation distributed
    lock managers were all built to use the process id as the lock owner,
    which doesn't work for locks which need to move with the transaction.
    Oracle and DCE-based TP Monitors
    ================================
    How does Oracle interface to the Encina TP monitor? To CICS/6000? I've
    heard that they require OSF DCE facilities in order to run?
    Oracle interfaces to Encina and CICS/6000 just as it does to any other
    TP Monitor. The TP Monitor issues XA commands to control transactions, and
    Oracle executes the commands. Encina and CICS/6000 do use DCE features for
    their own operation. However, this use is transparent to the Oracle Server.
    What DCE facilities can Oracle products take advantage of when working with
    a DCE-based TP Monitor?
    The two most commonly mentioned DCE features which might be useful
    to Oracle users are multi-threading and security. We look at these in
    the subsequent questions in this section.
    Encina documentation suggests that a Resource Manager such as Oracle can
    be either single-threaded or multi-threaded? Which way is Oracle XA
    implemented?
    The Oracle XA implementation is single-threaded, as is any Oracle client.
    Within a single process, at most one thread can access Oracle at a time.
    Does that mean that only a single Encina application can access an instance
    of Oracle transactionally at any given moment?
    No. Oracle XA is only single-threaded within a single application server
    process. Multiple applications can access Oracle simultaneously using XA
    by using different application processes. Encina allows
    (1) serial reuse of a single server by different clients. There are
    two options for this. The server can use long term reservation
    but be defined to be in shared or concurrent access mode, which
    allows the server to be used by another client as soon as an RPC
    completes. Alternatively, the server can use default reservation
    and exclusive mode, which allows the server to be used by another
    client as soon as the current transaction ends.
    (2) concurrent execution by multiple servers, even if they are accessing
    the same Oracle database. These may be executing the same or different
    procedures.
    These two features should let you get as much concurrency as you need.
    Why isn't the Oracle XA library multi-threaded?
    The XA specification specifically states that its use of the phrase
    "thread of control" means a process. If an RM were to multi-thread its
    XA, it would be in violation of the specification. This restriction
    was put place in because at the time the specification was written,
    there were numerous thread packages: if the TM used one, the application
    another, and perhaps the RM yet a third, there's no way it could work.
    As threads standards settle down, the later versions of XA will probably
    relax this restriction.
    Will Oracle change if the XA specification changes?
    Very likely. The exact time frame will of course depend on the priority of
    all work items at that time.
    Does Oracle use DCE security via the TP Monitors?
    The integrity of the connection between a DCE TP Monitor client and DCE
    TP Monitor server is protected by the DCE security functionality.
    Theoretically, the TP Monitor could make the DCE-protected client security
    information available to Oracle. Unfortunately, there's no standard way
    for a TP Monitor to pass security information information to a Resource
    Manager such as Oracle. Oracle is leading an effort to extend the X/Open
    model to allow use of the security information provided by the Monitor.
    In the meantime, the basic DCE security features such as encryption are
    useful within TP Monitors.
    Effective use of DCE security would normally also mean that the security of
    the TP Monitor client be passed through the TP Monitor, through the Oracle
    client (application server), to the Oracle Server, and possibly on
    to other Oracle Servers through database links. The ability to transfer
    security information to other processes, called delegation, is missing
    in DCE version 1.0. DCE version 1.1, expected to emerge in late 1994,
    has some delegation features. Oracle is examining these features to see
    how they might be used.
    Are there any special considerations for CICS/6000?
    There are two:
    (1) It is inefficient to run without XA. CICS/6000 is designed to
    use XA. It uses XA so that the CICS server can log on to Oracle
    when it starts, after which it makes that Oracle connection available
    to any transaction it executes. If you don't use XA, the CICS server
    does not itself log on to Oracle so each transaction has to log on
    and log off - a very expensive mode of operation. Also, it is very
    un-cics-like in that the application does the log{on,off} and also
    commits - in a mainframe CICS database program CICS would implicitly
    do these operations. Oracle does not recommend this mode because of the
    performance penalty.
    (2) CICS servers are generic and dynamically load application modules.
    In order for these modules to access the Oracle connection made by
    CICS, the applications must be built with a shared object version of
    the Oracle libraries. This is an installation option on platforms which
    support CICS/6000 and other products using its architecture such as
    CICS 9000.
    Other commonly asked questions
    ==============================
    What other Resource Managers can be included in an Oracle XA transaction?
    Several other relational database vendors have an XA implementation
    available or in progress. There is an XA C-ISAM product from
    Gresham Telecomputing. There are also Resource Managers contained
    within some of the TP Monitors which can be coordinated in the same
    transaction. For example, CICS/6000 has VSAM files and other data
    stores, Encina has its RQS queuing system, and Tuxedo has its /Q queuing
    system.
    What is Recoverable Queuing Service (RQS) and how does it interoperate with
    Oracle7 and Encina? What about /Q?
    Recoverable Queuing Service is a feature provided by Encina which allows
    transactional, distributed queuing (enqueue/dequeue). Tuxedo has a similar
    product called /Q. Because these products are themselves coordinated by the
    TM component of the TP Monitor, their queue operations are atomically
    coordinated with with operations on XA Resource Managers such as Oracle7
    Server. That is, they can atomically put something on one of their queues
    and commit an Oracle transaction, then at some later time dequeue an
    entry atomically with doing some other Oracle transaction. The queue
    system guarantees that the message will not be lost or transmitted twice.
    Can I mix TP Monitor applications with standard Oracle7 Server applications?
    Yes, you can have existing Oracle applications connected to the database
    with alongside TPM applications against the same database. The TPM does
    not manage the whole database, just those transactions which are started
    by the TPM. The Oracle Server will properly handle concurrency control
    between the transactions managed by itself and those managed by the TPM.
    Is Oracle planning to change its tools to be more suitable for TP Monitors?
    With Oracle Procedure Builder 1.5, to be available with CDE2,
    Oracle will provide a foreign function interface that allows you to
    dynamically set up PL/SQL calls that access C functions. In other
    words, you can access C routines in Windows DLLs from within your
    PL/SQL procedures. This will allow PL/SQL under Windows easy access to
    TP Monitor APIs.
    Does Oracle7 Server itself use XA-compliant TPMs as the interface to
    foreign RMs?
    No, for this purpose Oracle Server uses the SQL*Connect products or the new
    Transparent and Procedural Gateway products.
    Does Oracle7 Server use XA to coordinate Oracle7-only distributed
    transactions?
    No, it uses an internal mechanism.
    Can database links be used with XA?
    If an Oracle7 database is running under XA, it can access other Oracle7
    databases through database links, with some restrictions. First, the
    access to the other database must use SQL*Net V2 and be running MTS.
    Second, it must currently be to another Oracle7 database. Assuming those
    restrictions, the Oracle 7 database can do distributed update to another
    Oracle 7 database by using a database link, whether it is started by an
    Oracle application or a TP Monitor application. The TPM will see Oracle
    as only a single RM, but Oracle7 will propagate all the transaction
    commands to the other database, including the two-phase commit. If
    the transaction is started by a TP Monitor application and is using XA,
    it can also update non-Oracle resources managed by the TPM. If it
    is started from an Oracle application, it can only include resources
    managed by Oracle.

    Are multiple direct connections possible from a Pro* program?
    Using XA, you can not only specify multiple direct connections to Oracle7
    databases, you can also update them both in the SAME transaction. The
    way to do this is to use a precompiler feature called a named database.
    When you use a named database, you qualify the SQL statement with the
    database name. For example, you write EXEC SQL AT dbname UPDATE emp ....
    We have a complementary feature in the xa open string to let the user
    associate the name with a particular RM instance, called the DB clause.
    You will also want to use the SqlNet clause in the open string so you
    can give the two different SIDs. This clause does not require the use of
    the SQL*Net product, it is just a naming convention. For more information,
    see Oracle7 Server for UNIX Administrator's Reference Guide.
    Some TP Monitors may not support having multiple Resource Mangers in the
    same server; check with the TPM vendor.

    Performance with Oracle Server and TP Monitors
    ==============================================
    I have heard that Transaction Processing Monitors (TPMs) will increase
    Oracle Server performance. Is this true?
    Several hardware and TPM vendors have made the claim that TPMs
    will increase RDBMS performance. This claim is based on TPC-A
    benchmarks. The key point to understand about TPC-A is that it
    requires, for every transaction-per-second, ten times that many
    users to be connected. For example, to get 600 TPS, you need 6000
    users. The next question will answer in more detail how the the
    three-tier architecture addresses this requirement, but first let's
    look more generally at what TP Monitors can and can't do to improve
    performance.
    TP Monitors can provide better performance:
    (1) When there are more than several hundred users connected.
         This is because of the TP Monitor's role in the three-tier
         architecture, described in the next question. In this
         architecture, terminal handling is offloaded to one or more
         separate machines, freeing up those cycles to do database work.
         Note that this does NOT mean that Oracle itself runs faster,
         just that we've given it more CPU cycles to use.
    (2) When, because of the high potential concurrency of requests,
         significant resource contention exists. Use of a TP Monitor can
         limit the degree of concurrency and thus reduce contention.
    TP Monitors can not provide better performance:
    (1) For existing applications. The applications must be designed
         to fit the TP Monitor architecture.
    (2) For applications which are highly interactive in their use of
         the database. These applications put many messages
         through the transport system, and the TP Monitor is not as
         efficient as SQL*Net for point-to-point communication.
    (3) For CPU intensive single-query decision support. When executing
         a single large command, Oracle query facilities work efficiently,
         especially with the use of Oracle Parallel Query, available in 7.1.
    How does the three-tier solution help TPC-A, or other situations with
    thousands of on-line users?
    The TPC-A test calls for a large number of users to produce a given
    result. In the high-end results we produced in June, 1992, for example,
    6150 terminals were simulated to produce 618 TPC-A transactions.
    Thus, terminal concentration accounts for a large portion of the total
    processing time used.
    First, let's look at how the Multi Threaded Server would work for
    this benchmark. In this case, there are many client processes,
    but only a few server processes, which handle client requests on a
    first-come first serve basis. When they are done with a request,
    they take another client's request.

    If there are 500 clients in this environment, there will be one or more
    dispatcher processes, dynamically tunable, and one or more shared
    server processes, dynamically tunable, on the server. The reduction
    in the total number of processes handled by the server system
    results in more processing time available for RDBMS activity. Thus
    higher RDBMS transaction throughput can be obtained on the
    server system.
    But the problem for the TPC-A, and for certain large customer
    configurations, is not the only ability of the Oracle Server to
    process transactions, but also the ability of the operating
    system to handle huge numbers of incoming connections.
    There is one incoming connection for each client. Most UNIX
    operating systems have a limit on how many such connections they can
    handle. Even if a particular operating system allows a large number of
    connections, each takes some amount of overhead to manage.
    In order to service all 6150 terminals, we selected a 3-tier hardware
    environment where the middle tier, using a TPM, acted as a terminal
    concentrator. The high-end TPC-A architecture looked like the following.
    The Application Servers, which contain the Pro*C statements used to
    perform the transaction also run on the terminal concentrator machine
    in order to offload as much work from the database serve as possible.
    They send the compiled SQL over SQL*Net to the Oracle7 Server processes.

    The TPM is the software component of the terminal concentrator. In this role
    it offloads terminal handling from the the machine running Oracle Server.
    Since more than one terminal concentrator can be configured, whereas the
    database in this case had to run on a single machine, concentrator machines
    can be added until the performance of the back-end machine was optimized.
    This three-tier solution resulted in the outstanding transaction throughput
    announced with Oracle7 Server. Even with Oracle Parallel Server, it may pay
    to offload the terminal handling so that the cluster can be exclusively used
    for database operations.
    Can you summarize the performance discussion for me?
    Depending on the number of users required, different architectures may be
    used in a client/server environment to maximize performance:
    1) For a small number of users, the traditional Oracle two-task
    architecture can be used. In this case, there is a one-to-one
    correspondence between client processes and server processes. It's
    simple, straightforward, and efficient.
    2) For a large number of users, Multi Threaded Server might be a better
    approach. Although some tuning may be required, Multi Threaded Server
    can handle a relatively large number of users for each machine size
    compared to the traditional Oracle approach. Using this approach,
    customers will be able to handle many hundreds of users on many
    platforms. Furthermore, current Oracle applications can move to this
    environment without change.
    3) For a very large number of users, where transactions are simple and
    terminal input concentration is the overriding performance issue, a
    3-tier architecture incorporating a TPM may be useful. In this case,
    terminal concentration is handled by the TPM in the middle tier. As
         you might expect, it is a more complex environment requiring more
         system management. For existing Oracle customers, significant Oracle
    application modifications will be required.
    Oracle provides all of these choices.
    Performance using Oracle's XA Library
    =====================================
    Are there any performance implications to using the XA library (in other
    words, to using TPM-managed transactions)?
    (1) The XA library imposes some performance penalty. You should use
    TPM-managed transactions only if you actually need them. Even if you
    are getting the one-phase commit optimization, the code path is
    longer because we need to map back and forth between external
    formats and internal ones. Also, prior to 7.1, XA requires you
    to release all cursors at the end of a transaction, which results
    in extra parsing. Even with shared cursors, there is time spent
    looking up the one you need and re-validating it. This has been
    improved for 7.1.
    (2) If you need to use two-phase commit, this will incur additional cost
    since extra I/Os are required. If you do need 2PC, you need to account
    for that when sizing the application.
    (3) Although some TPMs allow parallel execution of services (such as Tuxedo's
    "tpacall"), this will not normally enhance performance unless different
    resource managers are being used. In fact, Oracle Server must serialize
    accesses to the same transaction by the same Oracle instance, and the
    block/resume code will in fact degrade performance in that case compared
    to running the services sequentially.
