AMPArch Linux 1.0 Alpha (Update: Alpha 2 as of 6/29)

hi all,
For about the past month and a half or so I've been working on an installable live CD "distribution" based on Arch Linux and the Larch scripts (http://larch.berlios.de).  My goals have changed and broadened, where at the beginning I just hoped to write some configuration scripts that would fully configure a minimal system, when I found Larch I decided to just create the ISO myself, and things moved quickly from there.
AMPArch Linux is one part Arch Linux (2008-04-rc), and one part Larch installable liveCD.  My philosphy is to keep things as simple as possible, have one program for each task, and try not to get in the way too much.  The desktop environment is based on OpenBox, PCManFM (desktop, wallpaper, file manager), PyPanel, and Wbar (quick launcher).  I've included GUI configuration tools where possible, and even written a few GUI utilities of my own for the project, such as amp-calendar (lets you view AND change the system date/time), and amp-exit, a custom exit widget with buttons for shutdown, restart, logout, hibernate, and standby.  In the future, I will provide more such utilities to facilitate doing everyday tasks through the GUI.
Right now, AMPArch is in Alpha stage, which means that everything I have in mind for 1.0 is implemented and working for me, but there may be issues.  I would appreciate it if people could download the ISO, give it a shot (works great in a VM), and tell me what they think.  You can read more and see screenshots at my website:

Edit:  There is now a torrent up at linuxtorrents.org.  I am currently the only one seeding, at the rate of 30KB/s, so more seeders are welcome

I like the slax design as a live system, but I think it might be a little over-complicated for some uses. The module orientation (which certainly has advantages) instead of the package orientation takes it a little further away from the underlying Arch system, which could have disadvantages. I suppose maintenance is then done at the module level?
Are there any consequences of this modular design for data persistence (what I have called session saving in larch)?

2) Were going to need to add find command to klibc for doing the modular design. This is so we can find all sqaushfs files (to find all .sqfs files) and added them in to unionfs.
3) We need to be able to added/remove modules to/from union when its running. This is so it can work more like a slax system.
Maybe you won't need a klibc based 'find'. If you can implement point 3, I guess you can find and load your various modules after loading a base module with the required utilities.
Alternatively (if you really want to do more fancy stuff in the initramfs) it is possible to use the code within a module from the initramfs environment by mounting it (it doesn't even need to be within a union) and using chroot (together with 'mount -o bind' if necessary). An example for this sort of thing is the way the larch initramfs scripts use tar and lzop from the main system squashfs file. No special klibc versions of these utilities are necessary.
I would also have another question to this modular approach, regarding installation. I note that many (all?) slax/linux-live based distributions do not offer genuine (i.e. equivalent to the original underlying distribution's non-live installer) hard-disk installation. For example, I believe there is some reason or other why it is not really possible (or is it just not recommended?) to install a normal slackware system from slax. Is this inherent in the design? Is it something that can be overcome? I ask because one of the aims of AMPArch and the larch scripts is that the live system can be used to install Arch Linux to hard disk, in a completely equivalent way to the standard Arch installation, but pre-configured to some extent (and thus for some users more conveniently).
But actually this thread was about the existing AMPArch, I think this modular discussion might be a bit off-topic and should probably be done elsewhere.

  • Will the Linux GPIB driver be updated to support PCMCIA cards?

Kernel 2.4 appears to fully support PCMCIA. Will the NI Linux GPIB driver be updated in the near future? If not, I am considering the INES GPIB card.

Right now there are no plans to add PCMCIA support to the Linux GPIB driver software, which currently supports AT-GPIB/TNT, PCI-GPIB, and GPIB-ENET/100 products. Adding this support will depend on the scope of demand for it.

  • My firefox beta 12 using Linux platform does not update to firefox RC1 via the "check for update" function. I know windows' beta version had this fixed, when would Linux get similar support ?

    Current platform : Linux
Current firefox version : Firefox 4 beta 12
Issue : does not update to RC 1 using the check for update feature.
Background : previously downloaded beta 8 and then it automatically updated to beta 12 using update features but for RC1, it does not.
I know users under Windows platform had same problem but was resolved and they can now update via check for update feature.
Please implement for Linux users too.
    Thanks !!

If you can't update then you can download and install the full Firefox 4 RC version.

  • Crash in ld-linux.so.2 after updating OpenJDK6

    Hi,
Yesterday I (automatically) updated my package version of OpenJDK6 from 1.5-3 to 1.5-4. When I try to run a board game client, OpenJDK halts.

  • Oracle linux 6.3: (yum update) [Errno 14] PYCURL ERROR 18

    Hi all,
I installed yesterday Oracle Linux 6.3 in the first time and when I tried to do yum update I got the following error:
    [root@ole6 ~]# yum update
    Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, security
http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleLinux/OL6/latest/i386/repodata/primary.xml.gz: [Errno 14] PYCURL ERROR 18 - "transfer closed with 1639799 bytes remaining to read"
    Trying other mirror.
Error: failure: repodata/primary.xml.gz from ol6_latest: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
How can I solve this problem?
    Thanks in advanced.

    Hi Avi,
Thanks for your reply. as I said this is my first time installing Linux so not all the terms are clear to me.
    I installed OL6.3 through Oracle VirtualBox 4.1.18.
anyway, I did what you recomanded and it's still not working:
    [root@ole6 ~]# yum clean all
    Loaded plugins: refresh-packagekit, security
    Cleaning repos: ol6_UEK_latest ol6_latest
    Cleaning up Everything
    [root@ole6 ~]# yum update

    Trying other mirror.
Error: failure: repodata/primary.xml.gz from ol6_latest: [Errno 256] No more mirrors to try.
when I tried to download http://public-yum.oracle.com/repo/OracleLinux/OL6/latest/i386/repodata/primary.xml.gz
by IE of my host (Windows) I succeed but when i tried to do the same through Firefox of the virtual machine the download stopped after approximally 15MB which is similar to what happened with the PYCURL ERROR 18 above.
Are there any configuration I need to set in my linux installation or maybe in the oracle virtualbox setting?
    Thanx,
    Yosi

  • AIR 2 Linux .rpm - breaks with updated software builds

    Hello Everyone,
We are bundling the AIR 2 .rpm installer in our software builds for use on RedHat 5.x using the following code:
    if [ -x "/usr/bin/Adobe AIR Application Installer" ]
              then
"/usr/bin/Adobe AIR Application Installer" -silent -eulaAccepted -desktopShortcut -programMenu -location $dest_dir/help $src_code_dir/Help.air
    Problem:
On a fresh install, everything comes up roses.
The problem occurs on subsequent installs of software builds. When I install an updated software build (that includes the above code), AIR does not install "failed due to bad configuration"and the AIR file is unavailable and grayed out in the software (though it works fine on fresh installs).
    Fix Attempts:
When I deleted the AIR file from the previous build and tried to install a build it did not work, "failed consult log".
When I deleted the AIR installer via Package Manager then installed a subsequent build, the AIR file installed and was accessible from the software. But it deleted exisiting AIR files on my desktop that were not affiliated with the software build.
    Questions:
What can I do to get AIR files from subsequent builds (that include the above code for the AIR 2 .rpm) to work in the software?
If the AIR installer needs to be removed prior to a subsequent installation, how can I remove the installer while protecting local AIR files that are not affiliated with the software.
    Thanks,
    Lydia

    Hi Sanika,
Yes, I would like to update the AIR application without prior having to remove the installer. Though the content of the help.air is modified, the name and certificate remain the same.
In our sw builds, if the AIR installer was not removed prior to the new build installation the following error would occur:

  • Oracle 8i or 8 Enterprise on a DEC Alpha under Linux!?!?!

I downloaded Oracle 8 Enterprise Edition and burned the CD to
install it on an Alpha running Linux. I wasn't paying attention
and overlooked the fact that it would only run on an Intel box.
Does anyone know if there will be a RISC or Alpha port of 8i?
    Thanks,

  • Updated Instant Client 11.2 for Linux 64 bit is on OTN

The 11.2 Instant Client for Linux 64bit has been updated on http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/oci/instantclient/htdocs/linuxx86_64soft.html
It is now at the same patch level as 32 bit.

I just tried to download these as RPMs. I was able to download the basic rpm but the sqlplus rpm and supplemental jdbc rpms failed. Instead of getting a prompt to save the file, content was displayed by the browser (binary content). It appears as is the mime type was not set correctly?

  • Proper Method for updating Virtualbox on linux-ck? [SOLVED]

Running linux-ck on sandybridge, here are installed packages:
    linux-ck-sandybridge 3.19.1-1
    linux-ck-sandybridge-headers 3.19.1-1
    virtualbox 4.3.26-1
    virtualbox-ck-guest-modules-sandybridge 4.3.24-2
    virtualbox-ck-host-modules-sandybridge 4.3.24-2
    virtualbox-ext-oracle 4.3.26-1
    virtualbox-guest-iso 4.3.26-1
    virtualbox-host-dkms 4.3.26-1
    kernel information:
    3.19.1-1-ck #1 x86_64
After updating Virtualbox, I am receiving this error:
    RTR3InitEx failed with rc=-1912 (rc=-1912)
The VirtualBox kernel modules do not match this version of VirtualBox. Reload the modules or if you don't use our stock kernel execute
    'dkms autoinstall'
Which of course would traditionally mean that I must re-compile virtualbox kernel modules. In the old Arch days, that was:
    /etc/rc.d/xbovdrv setup
I'm a bit confused by both the Virtualbox wiki page as well as the linux-ck page; my understanding is that the linux-ck repo contains updates modules for virtualbox, and that these automatically update (thereby removing the need to use dkms). However, I am fully updated and I am still getting this error (after reloading kernel modules and rebooting).
    I've also tried running:
    dkms install vboxhost/4.3.26
As root, but it only reports that, "Module vboxhost/4.3.26 already installed on kernel 3.19.1-1-ck/x86_64"
I'm sure this is my bad, but I'm afraid after two hours of reading the wiki and this forum, I am still quite lost. I'd appreciate any help - let me know if there is anything else I can tell you all that will help!
    Thanks

No idea why your system has /etc/rc.d/* ... if you're using [repo-ck] I have been be compiling 3.19.2 and just rebuilt the vbox packages updating them to 4.3.26.  There was a short delay since I had to rebuild against the new kernel.  Anyway, just:
    pacman -Syyu

  • How to update BIOS on Linux

    Hi,

    Nope.
Even if I had, I would probably not be installing Windows on it to upgrade the firmware!
I got some generic ways to install firmware if using Linux:
    https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BIOSUpdate
But I will wait for an official response from someone at HP about providing a Linux compatible BIOS update before attempting that.
If that is your desire, then I highly recommend that you contact HP directly.
You may have quite a long wait otherwise,

  • Kernel26-ice, RT update/option

The below is now outdated, because I've just submitted the kernel26-rt-ice package to the AUR and will be maintaining it. It can be found here. Please use this thread for support request/questions. Of course, AFTER googling/searching the wiki/forums.
    Hi all,
Please let me draw your attention to kernel26-ice, maintained by iceman81. Since 14-Apr-09, the RT patch has been tacked on to that kernel, and can be applied simply by changing a single variable in the PKGBUILD.
However, the kernel is first and foremost and ICE kernel, so updates to the RT version will not be reflected by a changed version number. In other words, yaourt will not notify you its been updated, so on and so forth. So, the purpose of this thread is so that you can be informed everytime there is an update to the RT patch, as applied to kernel26-ice. I'm responsible for the thread, and will simply post a message here everytime there is an update, so subscribe here if you like.
Note: Please simply click 'Subscribe to this topic' right at the bottom (its above the Quick post region, on the left) instead of replying to subscribe, so that subscribers do not receive non-related notifications. Thank you all for your cooperation, and iceman81 for your maintainance of the ice, and now the RT, kernels.
Throughout the lifespan of 2.6.30 there was no workable -rt kernel. This will likely recur at 2.6.32. Because of that, I'll be keeping here a record of the last working PKGBUILD I have used from kernel26-ice, with the appropriate modifications for RT. I do not want to maintain a separate PKGBUILD on the AUR, as this is iceman81's project, and I do not have the skills to do more than modify his builds.

We are now at 2.6.31. No working rt patch for 2.6.30 was found, so this is the first new RT patch in kernel26-ice in 3 months. I'm downloading the sources now, if the compile goes fine I'll paste the PKGBUILD in the OP. This is so that, if in future kernel versions when -ice moves ahead -rt is left behind there will be a reference PKGBUILD for those who still want the RT kernel.
I've considered doing an AUR package, but there's already one old one by Fackamoto i believe, so unless that is orphaned this topic will be the 'distribution' channel for RT via kernel26-ice.
EDIT: Does not work, the patch is for rc8 and I believe there have been changes since then. Will continue trying for when new patches are forthcoming.
