An answer to the "General Error"

I'm in the process of importing old VHS tape through a Canopus ADVC-300 into FCE and prepping the video for DVD via iDVD.
In the process of exporting one of the tapes, FCE generated the "General Error". My queries on this forum found many posts from folks looking for an answer to the same error, albeit not always from the same set of circumstances.
For me, it turned out to be a specific frame of imported video. I located it by selecting half the video for export via In and Out points and exporting only that half. During export, if the error would occur I would further divide that half of video in half again and export. I did this 7 times (you don't need to subdivide any more than this) and relatively quickly located the specific frame of video that was causing the problem.
I cut out that single frame and then exported the entire sequence without generating the "General Error" problem.
It is helpful to note that the export processes the video linerally from left to right. Noting where in the export process the error occurs helps narrow down the general area to look in and which half of video to export to find the problem frame.
Hope this helps others figure this one out.

"In the process of exporting one of the tapes"
From this I understand the General Error was caused during capturing (exporting) the tape.
That sounds like it may have been a timecode break on the tape.

  • What are the general errors will come in data uploading

    Hi Friends,
What are the general errors will come in data uploading
    Thanks in Advance

    Paul
It all depends on how we configure the system. Errors may be different for different scenerios like
User ALEROMOTE Loacked for master data's
Data Sourcs has to be replicated
    Activation Failures
Error occures in data Selection Etc.
Do you have any specific error so that we can work on that.
    Thanks

  • How to add sound to the general error handler

I'm looking for an easy way to create an audible indication (a beep or something) when the general error handler displays an error message.  Anyone have any suggestions??
    Solved!

    Hi Bill,
I thought this was an interesting idea, so I wrote up the code and posted it on the NI Community here: Simple Error Handler with Beep.  If you have any cool VIs that you'd like to share, you can post them on the community as well to share them with others.  Thanks!

  • Using the general error handler on an embedded rt target

I would like to know how the general error handler can be best employed
with Labview RT on a Compact Fieldpoint controller.  Clearly no
dialogue options are valid so how can error information be accessed
remotely - is there an error log file available on the controller?

I think there are plenty of ways to handle errors with Labview RT on a Fieldpoint controller.
Usually I use the general error handler vi to catch the error and get the error message (sure, no dialog), then write the eroor message into a log file (ordinary text file created on the controller), and/or send the eroor message through TCP/IP network to the host. You can use FTP to open, read and tranfer the log file at host. Hope help.

  • So, again with the general error

Strange. I'll open a session. Not too much in it, just an chopped up .avi and a chopped up .aiff. It exports fine, UNTIL...I make a single cut with the razor blade. Not moving anything around. Just making a single slice with it. Then, I get the 'general error' message. If I go back and undo the error, it will export fine. I've tried trashing my preferences and render files per some suggestions in other threads. Any thoughts?
    mbp duo 1.83   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   FCP 5.1.1

Wow...none of those are really editable codecs.
H.264 is a web delivery and HD DVD codec...not meant
for editing with. And AVIs aren't optimized for FCP
to work with (depends on the codec too...an AVI can
be one of a dozen codecs, just like MOVs). And FCP
    doesn't work with .wmv files.
I'm not trying to import .wmv files into FCP. Only export.
You are having all these errors and this trouble
    because of this.
I don't think so. If I take the same sessions to my dual G5, many of the problematic FCP sessions work just fine. Although, I've had similar problems on that platform as well.
The long an short of it: The original clips are avi using the techsmith encoder. I'll drag those in, make a multiclip sequence with it, bring in some audio (aif), do a bit of editing, then export with flip4mac to wmv. Weird? Yes. But, it works a fair bit of the time on my G5 setup.
The other codecs I mentioned were encounted while trying to figure out what could possibly be causing this.

  • Getting burned just before the burn: general error

After a bit of struggle getting CS4 on my machine, (an upgrade from CS3), I did a test project of a few short DV-based shorts and tried to burn a disk. Just after a successful transcode, it gives the "general error" error and stalls the burn. Same thing with burning a folder or an image. I also noticed that if I try to preview the project again after burning fails, it won't preview either (although it will before the burn attempt). Any attempt to bring in pre-rendered (*.mpg) files from any source hangs the whole machine.
I have taken some of the advice from the forums, like removing the audio track, etc., to see if this helps, but so far it doesn't. I am running it on Windows 7 64bit, but it has not had any issues so far with PP CS4 or any of the other Adobe products compatible with the Vista 64bit OS.
    Machine stats:
    Intel Q9650 cpu
    Intel DG33-TL mobo
    8GB memory
1TB RAID 0 for SD and HD files
    nVidia Quadro 540 graphics card
    No overclock or special tweaks
Been using PPro since 1.0, but have not seen this problem before.
    Another perspective maybe helpful.
    Thanks-

    Addendum:
I have used Cineform in the past (Aspect HD) but I removed it because it was interfering with some of my other software. I replaced it with NEO player, but I'll see what taking that off will do.
I sometimes use the Blackmagic Intensity Pro for ingest of some of the HD footage into Premiere.
My machine, for reasons I cannot figure out, recognize any camcorder through Firewire (I generally use P2 cards anyway); I do not think this bears on this particular problem with Encore CS4.

  • General Error on opening several projects - even on all of the autosaves!

I am trying to open a project I was working on last week and it gives a general error upon opening. I looked at some of the previous posts about this and tried resetting preferences, opening up autosave versions (which also give the general error), and repairing permissions. I can open many other projects perfectly. Then I found that another project I was working on last week is also giving the same general error and all of its autosave versions are also giving the error. Is the file corrupt, and if so, why all of the autosave versions too? Is there any way to fix this? (I have many work hours of time invested in each project and closing deadlines!)
    Thanks in advance,
    Nathan

I found a solution! What had happened was I moved my "Music" folder from one hard drive to another and created an alias on the original disk to reference to the new location. What I did was change the name of the aliased folder and now I am able to open the project and reconnect the media to reference the new location directly instead of through the alias. Hurray!

  • "General Error" when exporting unrendered clip?

I have .mov clips in my project that already have an alpha channel in them (format is Animation millions of colors +).
They're on the timeline in a sequence, with a single transition between them.
I want to export back to Animation Millions of Colors + in order to keep the alpha channel (this is for Flash video conversion).
The composite mode for the clips are set to normal, with straight alpha. I can see that the alpha is intact on the clips in the timline by temporarily placing an image on a layer under them.
I understand that you have to export without rendering in order to preserve the alpha channel.
However, when I try to export to ANY codec without rendering, I get a dialog that says only "General Error." Rendering will allow export, but of course the alpha channel is gone now.
I'm running System 10.4.10 with the QuickTime 7.3 upgrade installed, FCE 3.5.1. Did QT 7.3 break something?
    Thanks in advance,
    Steve

    Tom,
Thanks for your reply. The problem isn't that I didn't use the right codec (I did, as I said in my original post). The problem is that I am not able to export an undrendered clip using any codec. All I get is the "General Error" message.
Thus no transparency in the exported file.
Also to clarify, I am not keying the source files to create transparency in FCE. The source files already have an alpha channel in them.
I have downgraded to QuickTime 7.2, so 7.3 was not the culprit. I have also run the usual system cleanup utilities like AppleJack, etc.
    Thanks,
    Steve

  • Getting a general error message in FCE when putting .mov file onto timeline

Putting a .mov film onto the timeline above a moving image so we see the mov file playing in a reduced size in the background of whats going on ( a window). Don't know why this is happening but any advice would be appreciated!
We are really stuck so any help would be so appreciated!
    thanks.

Its converted to an mpeg4 file but i think it may be the fact it is running at 30fps as oppose to the rest of the project which is 25fps. When I try to put it on the timeline it gives me the general error and then the footage which was on below it on timeline no longer exists. Very strange.

  • General Error while exporting QT

The last couple of projects I've done have been online conforms to HD 10bit uncompressed.
After finishing all of my tweeks, I wish to output a master Quicktime. As usual I place my in and out markers at the beginning and end of my timeline, and select Export to QuickTime Movie. I select current settings and make self contained. I target my XRAID with better than 1.5 TB available.
I've had both of these project fail well into the output process. All FCP says is "General Error". After a little research I discover that I'm not the only one with this problem. I tried trashing all of my FCP prefs and trashing my render files and re-building them.
If I Export to Compressor, the entire timeline will output without failing.
So, why is this happening? and... If I have a 1920x1080 23.98p 422 10bit uncompressed timeline and I export thru Compressor set to transcode to the very same settings. Is my video compromised in any way?
My latest piece is about 60 minutes, it appears to fail while halfway done. The previous one was 20 minutes and failed earlier.
    Intel 8 core 3.0Ghz, 6 Gig of RAM, OSX 10.5.5, QT 7.5.5, FCP 6.0.5, Kona3 (v6 software)

I eventually found a couple of clips 3/4s into my timeline that were fixes from Color. They were rendered out in an AJA YUV codec instead of the normal Uncompressed 10bit 422 codec. Although they looked fine, they were the fly in the ointment. When I ran the two offending clips out thru Compressor and replaced them in the timeline, the entire project exported in one go.
I wish FCP would do a better job of informing what and where the problem is, instead of the "General Error" message.

  • General Error Message Won't Let Me Save

    Hello,
I was editing an HD video earlier and I switched my audio/video settings to sequence preset DVCPRO HD - 720p24 - my capture present to DV NTSC 48 Khz (since im not capturing. i pulled files off an external hard drive - my device control preset was on SONY HDV FireWire. My video playback was on apple firewire DVCPRO NSTC 720x480. I opened another project and switched my user settings to regular DV NTSC. when I got back on my HD video, it showed that I needed unexpected rendering. When I rendered it gave the "general error" message. I had to select each clip that needed rendering and move it a little, then re render the selection. when I went to save the project it gave me the same "general error" message. I need to export this project to qucktime ASAP to put on a DVD. what should I do? pleeeease help......
    thanks in advance.
    and am I royally screwed????

sounds like you have some corruption going on, or perhaps a permissions issue (though I think that's less likely). Here are some things I'd try.
Create a new sequence with the proper settings for your footage. Copy all the clips in your old sequence and paste into the new sequence.
Create a new project with a new sequence. Copy and paste the clips of old sequence into the new sequence of the new project. Save As and give it a new file name.
Check the pathway to your Render folder and your Save folder. Make sure that permissions allow for READ AND WRITE all the way down. In other words, if your render folder is in:
    Harddrive/FCP/Render
Then make sure all three have READ WRITE permissions applied. Do this by selecting them one by one and hitting CMD+I for info. Then look at the permissions.
Hopefully one of those options will help.

  • General Error Issue: FCP 7 on my Mac Book Pro 10.6.8 2.53 GHZ 4GB

I'm working on a lengthy project, multiple timelines. Out of nowhere I started getting a "General Error" message on playback in a specific area of the timeline. I trash preferences, trash render preferences (making the timeline now red), and now the "General Error" pops up everywhere on the timeline on playback and render.
After trying everything I could think of:
    1. resetting scratch disks
    2. trashing preferences
    3. trashing render preferences
    4. repairing hard drives
    5. Converting to earlier saved versions of the project.
    6. Re installing FCP
    7. Finally, I tried creating a new project and dropping the original media in and recutting (matching timecode) and even this popped up the general error.
I'm cutting converted RED one footage and 16mm footage converted to quicktime files. I am only using about 1/2 of the harddrive space on my comp, and the scratch disks are currently set to a 2TB external G Drive with 500GB left.
This project has existed for over 9months that I've been tinkering with it and all of a sudden this issue appears. I find it strange.
I wasn't super organized in setting up the project (my first large film and first film ever on fcp), and the scratch disks have moved around a lot, etc. But, I've never moved the original clips, and it doesn't seem to be an issue of relinking the clips either. They don't seem to be offline at all.
The format of is super wide 2240 x 960 on the red footage and super square for the 16mm footage (I think 4x3)
Let me know if you have ANY thoughts/ideas/help or if you need additional info.

  • I'm getting a general error message then out of memory trying to add a new sequence

Anyone know how to fix??  i am getting a general error message and then out of memory when adding a new squence??  Help!

The General Error warning is usually associated with incompatible files.
Out of Memory can be caused by corrupted clips, incompatible files and still images that use a color mode other than RGB.

The flow starts from a file folder. The sender instance of Oracle B2B is setup to pick up the file from the folder using File protocol and send to the Receiver B2B instance using AS2. When I look at the application message on the error message in the Reports tab, it indicates that the file has been picked up as follows:
    App Message property     {timestamp=2011-09-29T14:54:12.000-06:00, preserve_filename=true, filesize=5539, filename=EPCOZ_Invoice.xml, RECEIVED_FILENAME=EPCOZ_Invoice.xml, fullpath=/soaz/app/soa/temp/b2b/EPCOZ_Invoice.xml, file_ext=xml}
However, I receive the General error message that I posted previously.
Please advise on how to formulate the file name.
    Thanks.
