Analog Capture Settings??

Hello -
I have miniDV tapes and and Hi-8 tapes that I'm going to edit with PPro CS6.
Should the Sequence Preset settings be different for each or could I just utilize the DV NTSC preset for both?
Reason I ask is because I used the DV NTSC preset for capturing a Hi-8 tape and it seemed OK with the execption of the bottom of the video frames. It looks like when a flim projector is not quite aligned and is showing a bit of the next field / frame??
I was thinking maybe I'm not using the correct Sequence Preset setting that may be causing this?!
Also, I don't know if it's just me, but it also seems that both the left and right sides of the video frames have a liitle more black area than it should.
Any suggestions would be appreciated ... and if there is a info. elsewhere about Sequence Preset settings for my situation, please by all means if you would provide the link / website, I'd greatly appreciate that too.

I don't have any experince using HI-8, however I'm going to assume the reason for the black being on the sides has to do with the fact that HI-8's is shot at a lower resolution than Mini-DV.So this is most likely why the black bars are on the sides. You may also want to check the field order of both clips although I'm going to assume they are both lower, however like I said I don't have experince with Hi-8 tapes, anyways though you can check this by right clicking the clips inside your bin and selecting modify>interpet then looking where it says "conform". Check on both clips to verify their field order is matching because if you edit them in a sequence with the wrong field order it will appear wierd somewhat like you desribed. Also please check your footage resolution as well, generally speaking if I have lower resolution footage then I tend to edit in a sequence using the at the lowest resolution between all the files. However this depends on how big the resolution difference is and how the footage in question appears after scaling. You also will need to make sure the PAR matches you can check this by looking at the "Pixel aspect ratio" that is on the screen in the image below it's the same screen you can verify field order on. Most likely though depending on what program you captured everything in, you should be okay using a DV sequence, unless the footage from the HI-8 is just really low res.

No video on analog capture

Well I am trying to figure out why I get no video in my FCP version 6.0.5 Log and Capture window. I am running analog out of a video camera into my Sony DSR-11.....
I followed this advice from a previous post....
*Take the analog outputs of the VHS (S-Video if you have it) and plug it into the DSR-11 analog inputs.*
*On the front panel of the DSR-11 switch the input to either Video or S-Video depending on if you are using composite or S-Video output from your VHS.*
*In FCP, open Log and Capture, and under the Capture Settings Tab, select non-controllable device.*
*Play the VHS and press Capture Now.*
I still have no communication/video in the Log and Capture window. The strange thing is that I-Movie recognizes the DSR-11, and video is also recognized in Quicktime...
Tried trashing preferences.... no go .....so now I am stumped.....I could capture in another program but am determined to figure this out.....

Thanks so much for your help Jim... Tried all the usual subjects to no avail. Hopefully I will not have to capture analog again soon.
So the question is......since I am able to capture in I-Movie and Quicktime and not FCP (wish I knew why....but I have not quit looking into yet) then which program could I use to capture the footage, and then what format should I convert to for editing in FCP. What I am actually doing is capturing footage from a VCR for my daughters wedding reception video so I am not really concerned about quality loss, as there is not much quality to begin with. I will be combining the video clips with TIFF photos to make the video. I think the quicktime uses H.264 and I - Movie seems like the clips are DV/DVCPRO - NTSC.
As I have read, H.264 is not a FCP editing format, and I am not sure if DV/DVCPRO is ok to use or if I should convert it.

Sony Z1U HDV Capture Settings for FCP 6.0

Hi, I am shooting a project on Sony's HVR-Z1U HDV camcorder at HDV 60i NTSC. Does anyone have suggestions for settings to capture the material into FCP. I have FCP Version 6, part of the FC Studio 2 upgrade.
Appreciate any feedback!

There are definiitely some advantages to editing in DV rather than HDV for easy workflow and faster renders, etc.
To capture, you'll have to get the settingns on the deck and in FCP to match. If you have the deck/camera set to HDV then choose the appropriate easy setup in FCP such as HDV 1080i60. If you want to capture as DV, then set the deck to downconvert to DV, and choose the DV NTSC easy setup. You'll want to check the anamorphic box for you capture settings and sequences, but keep in mind if your are working with DV or any SD format, that the anamorphic setting can be esaily applied to clips and sequences after creation or capture.
When you export your web clips with compressor, figure out a square-pixel frame size that is some multiple of 16:9.

Capture Settings for uncompressed Video Vs DV Video

Im capturing footage from Digibeta masters via a J30 deck using a single SDI cable connected to my black magic extreme, (captured using the Blackmagic uncompressed 10 bit setting) editing in FCP and exporting to SD dvd via compressor using "dvd best quality 90 mins anamorphic".
Up untill today i had been using the same workflow EXCEPT i had been capturing over firewire using DV PAL anamorphic to work in the DV PAL format.
Comparing the final result of both workflows im not seeing a huge difference (the original footage is the same in both cases).
Are there any capture settings i can play with that will improve the quality of the final product or should i be looking at the bitrates in compressor instead?
I just want to make sure im not arsing up the capture and that i am capturing as much info as i can from the digibeta masters. The files created from he digi's are a lot larger then the files from the Dv stuff but i just dont feel im seeing that on screen - any advice?

All the original footage was shot on 35mm by a pro cinematographer - me:) Each project was mastered to Digibeta. What i want to do is show that footage in its best "light" so to speak, but i am limited to presenting it on SD DVD until Blu-ray takes off.
Up untill recently i had been using the Digi to DV to DVD workflow i had described above. With a recent desktop upgrade i am now recapturing all the same material from the same Digimasters using the uncompressed 10bit to dvd workflow descibed above so that i can avoid the afrementioned dv compression in the middle.
Obviously i can see a difference between uncompressed and Dv footage natively but when i view them both on DVD on a PAL monitor i cant see as big a difference as i had hoped i would see.
can i improve this difference with my capture settings or do i need to work on my dvd bitrate settings or a combination of both?

When I set for batch capture by creating off-line clips using the "Log Clip" option the off-line clip shows audio as
32KHZ 16-bit everyting else is correct as project settings.
Just prior to creating the off-line batch capture clip I had sucessfully captured from the same device using the same tape shot with the above settings including 48khz 16-bit audio by using standard " Capture" by setting in & out then clicking Capture>In/Out.
I've looked at capture settings etc...unable to determine to change audio settings etc or why the audio settings under batch capture do not conform to project settings...
Any ideas?

Well now...having negated all the possibilities you listed, I decided to do a an actual batch capture with clips which I previously logged which reported audio at 32kHz instead of the project setting of 48kHz:
1. two clips were selected from the same device/tape ( both selected from the logging util which erroneously reported audio at 32kHz) for the batch
2. both clips captured "flawlessly"
3. both clips after the batch capture then reported audio as being 48kHz
Btw, I also did a batch capture from the same device/tape in Pr 6.x...and it reported and captured at 48khz...I must say, I must prefer the legacy version of Pr 6 for batch capture which creates a log .pbl file which can then be easily exported as a csv to and .xls etc..IMO, much more useful...and useable..

So it would appear there is some kind of bug in the Pr cs4 batch capture util that is erroneously reporting audio settings?
Should this go to the devel as a possible bug?

TV@ Plus, what video capture settings to use?

I have a TV@ Plus and am unsure what video capture settings to use. I've had it for several months and solved my audio problems and need to know what Video Input Format, Capture Format (Profile), Capture - Size, Quality, Bit Rate and Audio Format settings to use. Should I use the same settings for all input sources or do I use different settings for CATV and S-video inputs? It seems to be OK with my current settings as far as capture and playback goes, I'm OK on the hardware part but with tech detatails I'm a bit .
I will be using it to capture from CATV, DVD and VCR input sources for later recording to DVD's. I use a GoDVD! CT-2 connected to the S-video input for recording Macrovision protected media to the HDD.
My computer sound is monitor mounted stereo speakers.

I already had transferred and converted some of my old VHS and VCD movie collections into DVDs (using Composite Input).
The higher the bit rate the better quality video output you will have - but bigger file size.
To give you an example:
A 2 hour video captured on MPEG set at 4000/bps will be translated it to 3.58GB. More than enough to be written on a 4.7 DVD.
For audio bit rates, you can choose from 128/bps to 224/bps. As for me I set it to 224/bps. Again the bigger bit rates the better audio output. And don't forget to slide up the audio record level to 100%. That will give you a better and clearer recorded audio output.

Capture settings for Canon XL2 shot in: 16:9 24p 2:3:3:2

I just boght the XL2 and FCP, and need to capture a four hour interview I shot today in 16:9 24p 2:3:3:2. I just don't know how to set up the capture settings correctly.

Well, 2:3:#:2 pulldown refers to the way your camera flags the frames while they're recorded, in other words there's not real 24P recording while using tape, because video runs @ 29.97fps ,(what the camera does is to tell to your editing machine that it has to spread the 1st frame over the two first fields the second frame over the next three fields the third frame again over three fields and so on, from there it why it's call 2:3:3:2 pulldown) so in fact to capture true 24P for editing you have to remove the pulldown and remember,if you later are going to edit to tape you'll have to re-apply the pulldown so it prints well to a 29.97 device.

DVCPRO 50 capture settings from SDX900

I captured some DVCPRO50 footage that I had shot on an SDX900 set at 24pa progressive. I captured it using the anamorphic DVCPRO50 preset. Looking at the footage, some clips have an interlaced frame every 3 progressive frames, while other clips have 2 interlaced and 2 progressive. These were all shot and captured with the same settings, so I'm assuming one of the capture settings are wrong.

OK I finally went back and figured it out. I had originally used the DVCPRO50 24p capture setting, but footage was recorded at 30 with a pulldown, whichever the SDX uses for its 24p interlaced setting. I used the generic DVCPRO50 anamorphic capture setting and then the Reverse Telecine in Cinema Tools did the trick like you said. Thanks for the help

FCP7 Capture Settings - HDV Audio

I am capturing just fine with FCP 7 and a Canon HV30 camcorder. However, I would like to be able to turn off the audio monitoring while the capturing is in progress.
Previous versions of FCP did not have audio monitoring with HDV cameras, and wasn't a problem. Now, I can't get it to be quiet without muting my system audio.
The HDV capture settings are not editable, nor can I duplicate the preset.
The capture window clip settings does not include a preview toggle.
Any ideas?

713x BDA Analog Capture defaults to SVideo?

I am having trouble using the MSI TV@nywhere Plus to stream live video from the composite input to a provider like ustream.tv.
Using a free version of webcamxp/webcam7, I am able to view/stream video ONLY when I select '713x BDA Analog Capture', then 'Video Input > Composite'. Some other clients (such as the ustream.tv producer client), there is only an option to select '713x BDA Analog Capture', which does broadcast (i can see the static being broadcast), but not from the right input port. Unfortunately, I am not able to select the 'composite' video input source, which I think is the problem.
Is there a way to change default the video input for this card? Is there another way to work around this?
I have tried connecting the camera (BNC output) to the TV@nywhere card differently, but found it only worked using: BNC -> RCA -> composite cable -> svideo port on the TV@nywhere card.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.

Have you tried BNC female to f male adapter using the antenna/cable in? I didn't have any luck finding BNC female to male PAL, native connector for the cable in is male PAL (card socket is female PAL) but PAL is hard to find in US since it's mostly used in Europe.
I don't know if this type of input would work but the adapter is cheap enough to give it a try.

Sequence and Capture Settings Help Needed

Hi there...
Need some advice on setting my Sequence and Capture Settings in FCP 6.0.4.
I have a Sony HDR-SR1 (AVCHD) and I know I how to bring the footage in through "Log and Transfer", but I'm not sure what I should be bring the footage in as.
Should I capture with HDV, or can I bring the footage in as ProRes 422 (HQ)? Once captured, should the Sequence be set to HDV - 1080i/60, or should it be set to the ProRes setting? Or, does AIC still play a factor in this and I should choose that?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if I bring in as HDV, the file size will be very large. But if I bring it in at ProRes 422, the filesize will be smaller, but how much will I lose in compression?
Also, does anyone know if I'm stuck shooting 1080i/60 or can I get 1080i/50 or 720p/24/25/30?

The orginal footage is not DV, it is DVCPRO 25. I am capturing in the DV setting because of the length of the footage. The DVCPRO deck doesn't have a firewire output.

Can't get Avid codecs to show in capture settings

I have a few Avid codecs but can't get them to show in easy settup or capture settings. They do sow in my sequece (compressor) setings Can I get these to show inmy easy settup and in capture settings?

By this I guess you mean I can transcode to an Avid codec but not capture.
Convert/Transcode...yes. But not in FCP. You'd do this via QT Export, or...hmmm...QT Conversion when you export.
In this case what setting would you recommend for capture?
Well, what camera did you shoot this footage with? What is your intended use of it? Final Delivery?

FCE Capture Settings Help Please!

I'm trying to figure out how to set the capture settings correctly in FCE. I have a Panasonic AG-DVX100BP and when I capture the video, the quality is terrible. Now I know that the capture viewer doesn't play the video in the quality that it is recorded. But I tested what I captured by exporting it to a QT movie and it still looks terrible. Yet, when I view the video in the preview window, before I capture, it looks exactly how I want it to look, how it was shot. My current settings are: Format: DV/Panasonic DVCPRO Rate: 29.97fps Use: DV-NTSC. Anyone got any ideas? Thanks.

Is your clip in the QuickTime player set to high quality playback? You really need to view this material on a video monitor, not a computer monitor.

Best HD Capture Settings - Sony HDR-HC3

Can anyone give me some advice for the best capture settings for my Sony HDR-HC3? My goal is to capture video from my camera and then play it on my HDTV using Windows Media Center through a shuttle pc hdmi out to my HDTV. Also, would it be better to then convert it to .avi or something after I've captured it in .mpeg?

Sequence and Capture Settings Match, Still Need To Render

I am capturing my video footage through a AJA Kona board using the SDI input. I have set my capture setting in FCP to 525 29.97 DV, and have set my sequence setting to match, also 525 29.97 DV. Yet when I overwrite the footage to the the sequence it needs to be rendered. I was under the impression that if the sequence and capture settings match I would not have to render. Is this not true?
