Anamorphic DV footage in FCPx.

I've tried to import anamorphic DV footage into FCP X, but I cannot get the aspect ratio to 16:9. How can I tell FC(P) X that the footage is anamorphic?

I'm very happy to report that the FCPX 10.0.6 update has restored the ability to flag video as anamorphic!
Or, as Apple more accurately puts it: "Sometimes the metadata tag specifying 16:9 playback in the video file is missing or set incorrectly. In Final Cut Pro, you can set this tag so that the video plays correctly with a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio."
The swtich is found in the Inspector's settings view.  Full details on this page:
https://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/mac/10.0.6/help/index.html?localePath=English .lproj#ver3363b44e
FANTASTIC!
NOTE:  As with the old FCP7, this only changes the aspect ratio of the material when viewed in the Final Cut application. In otherwords, it does not alter the tag in the source file in your 'Final Cut Events' folder.  So, if you want to view that file correctly in another application, such as QuickTime Player X, you still have to make the changes using Atom Inspector (or other such software descibed in this thread.)

  • Importing Sony PMW EX1 footage into FCPX

I just got a Sony PMW-EX1 (not the 1r).  I'm not very familiar with this format and I'm having trouble getting my footage into FCPX.  I imported a clip the way I thought it should be done and it simply showed up as a green clip.
Would someone familiar with this camera and FCPX help me get my footage ingested for use in FCPX.
    General information:
Camera connected via usb and card can be seen in the browser.
I searched through the card until I found a file named pir80684_01.MP4
When I imported the file the clip is completely green.  When I try to open the file in Quicktime I get this error.
The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -12909.)
FCPX said to access the camera via camera import, and then create a camera archive.  This was not possible for me as the camera did not show up in the camera import section.

    This came from Twezk Digital:
"There is no “native” XDCAM EX support (unlike native DSLR support) in the new FCPX — you still have to use Sony software to “wrap” your XDCAM files into a Quicktime file and then import your clips from there. And the new XDCAM Browser won’t do the trick, nor will the Clip Browser, no, you have to use something you may not have used before: XDCAM Transfer. If you think of XDCAM Transfer as your new Log & Transfer window, I guess it is about the same, it just feels wrong to have an “evolutionary” new video editor and need to switch out to an older third-party application for a codec that has been around for so long now."

  • How can I clean up old footage in FCPX?

How can I clean up old footage in FCPX? I have some older 4x3 TV analog video that has some pretty noticeable noise and fuzz in the image. Anyone know how I can clean them up a bit? Thanks!

FCP X doesn't ship with a noise reduction filter. You can experiment with selective blur effects and sharpening, but I would not be very optimistic about the results.
There are a number of plug-ins available. One that I think works well is Neat Denoiser. They have a trial  version (with watermarked output) that you could download to see whether it will do what you want.
    Good luck.

  • Importing Canon C300 footage into FCPX

So I shot about 100GB worth of footage on a C300. Now, when I go to import the footage into FCPX, I get the message "None of the selected files or folders can be imported. Change the selection and try again."
I've read in other threads that FCPX directly supports MXF files, and that I should just be able to import directly. However, it's not working! Anyone else deal with this or have found a solid workaround??
    - FCPX 10.1.1
    - iMac OSX 10.9.2, 3.4 GHz i5, 24 GB RAM.

Hi Chris, I use C300 footage all the time, FCPx loves it, all you have to do is install the plugin : http://learn.usa.canon.com/resources/blogs/2012/20120224_xf_plugin_fcp_x.shtml

  • Using DV QT footage in FCPX

    Hi People,
I am having a lot of trouble getting DV footage to look any good in FCPX.  I thought I would test it out by doing a small job in FCPX for a client & use a couple of QT master clips from previous edits done in FCP.  The QT clips are PAL DV 720x576 (16x9 anamorphic).
I have tried all the options in the settings of the project properties in FCPX , including DV PAL 720x576 anamorphic & it looks the same no matter what. When paused it looks good, but when played in the timeline it looks awful, similar to how it looks in QT player when not set to high quality - soft with slightly jagged edges. Yet when I play these clips in FCP7 they look how they always did, nice & sharp.
In desperation I tried changing the field order in FCPX with no change & have even tried opening the clips in QT7 & changing the video setting to high quality but nothing works.  It looks just as bad when exported to a QT movie (current setting) out of FCPX too.  It was so bad that I ended up going back to FCP7 to finish the project.
Any help/suggestions would be greatly apprecioated.
    Cheers,
    Steve.

I have taken screen grabs of the project properties & the source clip properties, does that help?
    Cheers
    Steve.

  • What's the best way to share footage from FCPX with an Editor still on FCP7?

I have a lot of footage that I've been organizing & logging in FCPX. But soon I'm handing the footage off to an editor that works mainly in FCP7.
Yes, I'm aware of the plugins 7toX and Xto7 that we should have, respectively, to share XML files. That way I can send them xmls for a rough cut.
But first, I want to share the raw footage with them in a way that'll ensure that the plug-ins work, etc.
    Any thoughts/recommendations? Greatly appreciated.

I'm sure you know that the same plug-ins that work on FCP7 won't work in X and vice versa. So' Im not sure what you're trying to achieve by first sharing the raw footage.
Depending on the codec, the raw footage may or may not work in both. Or to ut it another way, X may be able to work natively with clips that require transcoding to Pro Res in 7.
At the end of the day, unless you are OK collaborating with flattened files, I imagine the third party XML solutions will be your friend.

  • Anyone figured out how to import P2 720p footage to FCPX?

Hello Final Cut Pro X Discussers.
Problem: Panasonic P2 720 footage of any kind cannot be imported in to FCPX.
To my knowledge, there has been a shockingly disregarded problem in FCPX where you can not import and transcode 720 resolution video from Panasonic P2 cards. MXF files to be exact.
How could Apple/Final Cut Pro team overlook this for so many versions now? What's odd is we can import 1080 footage off the same P2 cards fine, but for some reason 720, at any frame rate, creates an error and cannot be transcoded.
Has anyone found a solution to this issue?
Thanks for your tips and advice FCP community.

@BenB - What format are you shooting in with P2? I have an HVX200, and when I shoot in 1080 at any frame rate, I also DO NOT have problems importing directly from camera or otherwise. However, whenever I shoot footage in 720p at ANY frame rate, I DO have problems importing.
The camera pops up in the "Import from Camera" window, I can see the clips, I can even play them, and after I select all or individual clips and hit "Import", FCPX tries importing them for a little bit and after a couple minutes an error window pops up saying there was a problem importing clip.
This happens whether I import directly from the camera, or from an archive that I copy to my local machine.
What's most surprising to me about this dilemma is the complete lack of documentation or response on the internet altogether. I see no official comment on the matter from Apple, nor Panasonic. Nor do I see reasonable alternative solutions, other than "Use FCP7 to Log&Transfer your P2", or buy one of the crappy overpriced third-party scam softwares out there.

  • Problem with using Canon 5D Mark II footage with FCPX

    Looking for advice ,
Avid have AMA link so you don't need to wast hard drive space, it conect directly to your raw footage and you can edit you don't need to transcode footage in order to edit. Does FCPX have that option ? The footage that I am using is Canon 5D mark II  after import i am ending up with raw footage and transcode footage Dubuling use of my space on HD . I would like to be able to dump my Canon 5D footage on hard drive conect with FCP(without dubuling footage) and start editing. I am doing someting wrong ? Need advice .
    Thanks
    A

    That is great thanks
    My steps are these:
    1. From my card I add DCIM folder to FCP Events folder.
    2. Then I go to FCP X and import but then he is creating original media folder with (id) so then I guess I can delite DCIM since I can use for future editing that (id) raw footage .Is that corect? My hard drive is backing up everytime I add new footage to HD.
    Thanks

  • How do I get AVCHD footage into FCPX?

I have a Panasonic HMC 150 HD camera that records in AVCHD. The files have an ".MTS" extension on them. I'm using Final Cut Pro X and trying to get the files to import using the "Import" function under "File." No luck. Do I have to convert these files using another program. If so, what's the best way to do the import without losing any quality?

One way I import older .mts flies I have stored on hard drives without archiving the complete folders and such (just the files) is using toast 10.
I go to make a blu-ray video disc, drag all the video MTS files I want to the new disc to make. I turn off menus and set automatic encoding. When I make a disc image I set it for DVD for the disc size as FCPX seems to like it over BD
Also it will not reencode the files if they are all they same format. I was doing this to add old footage in to imovie and it seems to be working with FCPX. Just mount the disc image and FCPX should see it as a camera archive disc.
Questions, just ask, sometimes I have trouble instructing.

  • Consolidating and "up-res"ing Anamorphic SD footage, and not losing aspect

O.K, I tried a forum search but could not find the answers, so here goes:
I have been working on a DVCAM project in FCP, and everything was captured DVPAL, and is Anamorphic.
All is well in the edit is finished.
So I wanted to up-res the project to uncompressed 10 bit (or possibly Prores to save disk space as I don't think my two disk raid will be fast enough to play uncompressed) for the final online so that I have more color space and GFX will look nicer; mastering to Digibeta via SDI.
I have a Blackmagic HD Extreme card installed.
I believed the proper way to consolidate and up-res at the same time would be to use Media Manager.
I selected my sequences (still in parts as I will put them together in the final layout).
    Open Media manager.
    Select 'Recompress'
    Select 'Blackmagic PAL -10 Bit'
    Then select 'Delete unsed media..."
    and tick 'Use Handles'
Make a new folder for it to go to,
tick 'duplicate selected items and place in a new project'.
It starts to process audio and video,
    and opens a new project.
But the new project is 4:3 and has the black bars.
When I open the media it also has bars top and bottom.
When that failed I unticked the anamorphic option in the bin.
did the same Media manager set up.
Then the new project/sequence has black on the sides!
Is my only option to use Media manager to copy and consolidate (use handles to remove media),
then use the mighty Compressor to up-res the media,
and re-link the new project to the new up-res media?
Help me Obiwan Kenobi, your my only hope .....

    Bounce...
O.K, so I have done the consolidation,
then set compressor to up-res the footage,
    Opened the new Project,
relink to the new Pro-res footage.
    Change sequence settings,
    start grade and final GFX.
Any suggestions on work flow for these kinds of projects.

  • Editing a HDV project with anamorphic DV footage setup issue

I’m editing a HDV show and my source footage was down converted HDV to 720x480 DV anamorphic. I’ve selected the anamorphic under format for all my source clips. In the viewer window everything correctly looks 16x9. In my canvas window my footage looks like 16x9, but when I select the title safe grid in the canvas window the title safe grid doesn’t line up like it does on the footage in my viewer window. It’s as though in my canvas window I’m looking at letterbox footage in a 4x3 screen and my title safe grid looks like it’s a 4x3 title safe grid.
My question is there a 16x9 title safe grid for anamorphic footage? Or do I have my sequence settings incorrect?
    My settings are:
Source footage is 1440x1080i HDV down converted and captured at 720x480 DV. Pixel Aspect-NTSC – CCR 601. Anamorphic selected.
    Sequence Settings are:
    720x480 NTSC DV (3:2)
Pixel Aspect NTSC –CCIR 601/DV 720x480
    Field Dominance: Lower
    29.97
    Compressor: DV/DVC Pro – NTSC
    I’m running FCP 5.0
I would appreciate your input. Thanks!
    Quad 2.5 G5   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   5 GB Ram

If you are creating an anamorphic project, and your
footage is anamorphic, then your sequence setting
must also be anamorphic unless you want it
    letterboxed in a 4x3 frame.
Check your Canvas view settings: "fit to window" and
    "show as square pixels".
That sounds correct but when I select anamorphic under "item properties" for the sequence it streches out the images as if I were double doing the anamorhic. It stretches sides again a second time.
I just tired this... I grabbed a clip and turned off the anamorhic on the source clip. I created a new sequence and turned on anamorphic on the sequence. That stretched out the footage in the canvas and the title safe grid looks correct. That's great. But wondering, is that the way FCP works, that you have to watch the source side distorted when editing?
And that's ok if there's not an option. And if so, is there a way of batch selecting all my source clips and turning off anamorphic?
    Thanks!

  • Exporting Anamorphic PAL footage to After Effects.

    Hi,
I am exporting my PAL footage to After Effects as DV-PAL Anamorphic. I have tried various compostion settings on After Effects including DV Widescreen but it still imports back into FCP at a different aspect ratio.
Does anyone know what settings I should use?
    Thanks in advance,
    Simon.

    Hi,
Ok I just took a piece of footage out of FCP into AFX comp settings PAL DV/D1 Widescreen 720x576 Aspect ratio 1.42.
I out put from AFX using DV Settings for the render settings and Quicktime DV PAL 48KHz for the output module.
I brought the AFX clip back into FCP on top of the original and did a 50% vertical crop on the clip in the Upper channel they match perfectly!
Not sure if I've done anything different to you but it works for me . . I suppose there is a possibility if you are using any 3rd party filters on the footage it might munge it in someway, if so using the method I used to check conformity you might be able to nudge the clip back to perfect aspect ratio.

  • Import of DVD footage to FCPX

I have very old sixty's footage that was placed onto DVD . Placing the DVD into the MBP , click it on the desktop , files shown are (Video_RM) and ( Video_TS) only. I have tried copying the whole thing to my HD , only empty files apear , Zero bites . I tried to import to Streanclip , Together and each file seporately , Says the last part of the file is not valid. You can try anyway ... then this come up :  File open error: can't find video or audio tracks.
Any advice apreciated . I have read many posts    All say Streamclip will import , but I am not seeing the VOB files you all talk about . Help !

The VIDEO_RM Folder indicates, this disk is made on some sort of 'DVDrecorder', consumer device; it contains only data such devices need in case you're editing with them.
    ruddyman wrote:

The 'Video' should be inside the VIDEO_TS folder, and esp. as a list of .VOBs. That error code means different:
    • does the disk playback on a stand-alone DVDplayer (I assume not)?
    • it could mean, the disk isn't finalized - this can only be accomplished on/with the device the disk was made with.
You should ask your copy-service for another, standard-conform disk (udf-formatted, AUDIO_TS and VIDEO_TS folders, incl. bups, infs and vobs .....)

  • Burning footage to DVD with Chapters using FCPX

I have created some footage using FCPX and now want to burn it to DVD. As the footage is long I want to include a menu with chaptures to allow me me to go sytreight to a certai  part i.e. scene selection.
When I select the DVD in the share menu it only appears to allow me to burn the footage and not include chaptures.
    How do I do it

If you choose Compressor, it'll cost you $49 from the Mac App store unless you already have it. The DVD subsequently burned by Compressor will have a basic menu that you have limited control over but the process to a finished DVD has few steps.
If you choose iDVD, it's free. (disclaimer: I don't know for sure if iDVD is still included on new Macs. If it isn't and that's what you have, could be a bit of trouble trying to get a copy). iDVD has a large collection of themes you can use to author a DVD and you can customize it fairly well. iDVD will recompress any video you give it so you can just export the full movie out of FCP X without compressing it first (Share->Export Media command)
    I haven't used "Burn".
