Using DV QT footage in FCPX

Hi People,
I am having a lot of trouble getting DV footage to look any good in FCPX.  I thought I would test it out by doing a small job in FCPX for a client & use a couple of QT master clips from previous edits done in FCP.  The QT clips are PAL DV 720x576 (16x9 anamorphic).
I have tried all the options in the settings of the project properties in FCPX , including DV PAL 720x576 anamorphic & it looks the same no matter what. When paused it looks good, but when played in the timeline it looks awful, similar to how it looks in QT player when not set to high quality - soft with slightly jagged edges. Yet when I play these clips in FCP7 they look how they always did, nice & sharp.
In desperation I tried changing the field order in FCPX with no change & have even tried opening the clips in QT7 & changing the video setting to high quality but nothing works.  It looks just as bad when exported to a QT movie (current setting) out of FCPX too.  It was so bad that I ended up going back to FCP7 to finish the project.
Any help/suggestions would be greatly apprecioated.
Cheers,
Steve.

I have taken screen grabs of the project properties & the source clip properties, does that help?
Cheers
Steve.

  • Importing Sony PMW EX1 footage into FCPX

I just got a Sony PMW-EX1 (not the 1r).  I'm not very familiar with this format and I'm having trouble getting my footage into FCPX.  I imported a clip the way I thought it should be done and it simply showed up as a green clip.
Would someone familiar with this camera and FCPX help me get my footage ingested for use in FCPX.
    General information:
Camera connected via usb and card can be seen in the browser.
I searched through the card until I found a file named pir80684_01.MP4
When I imported the file the clip is completely green.  When I try to open the file in Quicktime I get this error.
The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -12909.)
FCPX said to access the camera via camera import, and then create a camera archive.  This was not possible for me as the camera did not show up in the camera import section.

    This came from Twezk Digital:
"There is no “native” XDCAM EX support (unlike native DSLR support) in the new FCPX — you still have to use Sony software to “wrap” your XDCAM files into a Quicktime file and then import your clips from there. And the new XDCAM Browser won’t do the trick, nor will the Clip Browser, no, you have to use something you may not have used before: XDCAM Transfer. If you think of XDCAM Transfer as your new Log & Transfer window, I guess it is about the same, it just feels wrong to have an “evolutionary” new video editor and need to switch out to an older third-party application for a codec that has been around for so long now."

  • Importing Canon C300 footage into FCPX

So I shot about 100GB worth of footage on a C300. Now, when I go to import the footage into FCPX, I get the message "None of the selected files or folders can be imported. Change the selection and try again."
I've read in other threads that FCPX directly supports MXF files, and that I should just be able to import directly. However, it's not working! Anyone else deal with this or have found a solid workaround??
    - FCPX 10.1.1

Hi Chris, I use C300 footage all the time, FCPx loves it, all you have to do is install the plugin : http://learn.usa.canon.com/resources/blogs/2012/20120224_xf_plugin_fcp_x.shtml
after that you should be good to go

  • How can I clean up old footage in FCPX?

How can I clean up old footage in FCPX? I have some older 4x3 TV analog video that has some pretty noticeable noise and fuzz in the image. Anyone know how I can clean them up a bit? Thanks!

FCP X doesn't ship with a noise reduction filter. You can experiment with selective blur effects and sharpening, but I would not be very optimistic about the results.
There are a number of plug-ins available. One that I think works well is Neat Denoiser. They have a trial  version (with watermarked output) that you could download to see whether it will do what you want.
    Good luck.

  • Problem with using Canon 5D Mark II footage with FCPX

    Looking for advice ,
Avid have AMA link so you don't need to wast hard drive space, it conect directly to your raw footage and you can edit you don't need to transcode footage in order to edit. Does FCPX have that option ? The footage that I am using is Canon 5D mark II  after import i am ending up with raw footage and transcode footage Dubuling use of my space on HD . I would like to be able to dump my Canon 5D footage on hard drive conect with FCP(without dubuling footage) and start editing. I am doing someting wrong ? Need advice .
    Thanks
    A

    That is great thanks
    My steps are these:
    1. From my card I add DCIM folder to FCP Events folder.
    2. Then I go to FCP X and import but then he is creating original media folder with (id) so then I guess I can delite DCIM since I can use for future editing that (id) raw footage .Is that corect? My hard drive is backing up everytime I add new footage to HD.
    Thanks

  • What is the ideal RAID 5 logical drive configuration to use with editing 1080p on FCPX?

    Hello,
I invested in one of the new Late 2013 Mac Pros (8-core 3GHz, dual Fire Pro D500 w/ 3GM VRAM each, 32GB RAM), along with a Promise Pegasus R6 Thunderbolt (ver 1) RAID because I wanted a fast and supremely smooth editing experience versus slow, laggy, drop frame performance I had been experienceing in my previous Mac (a mid-2010 27" iMac 2.8 GHz Quad-Core, 16GB RAM, Radeon 5750 with 1GB VRAM) that had media stored on a single 3TB firewire drive.
The RAID came pre-configured with 6 x 1TB Toshiba drives giving me a Logical Drive that has 5TB capacity, 128kb stripe size, 512byte sector size, with Read Ahead/Write Back cache policy. I've also enabled "Forced Read Ahead" using terminal.
    THE PROBLEM:
Even with this super fast media storage that gives me about 600MB/sec data transfer rate, I'm still sometimes experiencing lag and stuttered playback from the timeline (In all fairness, the stuttering only happens for a few seconds then plays fine, but the lag can be frustrating when I'm trying to click through the timeline to check edits). The footage I work with is 1080p mov files from Canon DSLR that are transcoded to ProRes 422 and Proxy during import into FCPX. I never edit with camera-native formats, always with ProRes. I also always close all other applications, eventhough all the power boasted by the Mac Pro shouldn't have a problem with that. I've tested the video cards by playing multiple 1080p H.264 files at once and it played about 10 simultaneously without a hitch. I've also edited under a new user and still the issue remains. My conclusion is that the lag comes from the RAID. (I did a test project with having my library saved on the internal flash storage and editing improved dramatically with speed and responsiveness, which signals that my problem must lie with the RAID).
    THE QUESTION:
Is there a preferred or recommended stripe size and sector size that would cure my problem? Is it because it's RAID 5 even though I'm using 6 disks and getting tremendous sustained data xfer rates?
    OTHER RELATED INFO:
My FCPX import settings copies all files into the library and I have Optimized and Proxy checked. My projects are also saved in the same library so everything is contained in one place.
My projects are mostly 40 minute wedding videos 1080p at 23.98fps with lots of short video clips during montage segments, no more than 2 video tracks during the wedding the wedding ceremony.
I frequenly repair permissions on the internal boot drive. Sometimes trash FCPX preferences when performance gets ridiculous or other glitches happen, like audio refusing to play, or the timeline plays no video just audio.
Thank you! Any help or advice is appreciated!

    Hi,
Making our tablespace in different directory does not improve the performance. See, Basic thing does if you are lauching your text file from different directory
say Drives C , D and F respectively does your hit any performance (your OS is installed on Drive C). I don't thinnk you will getany boost up performance. See Basicaltl what is happening is that, try to launch you textpad and try to open the files from any there then you file will open immediately, if you ask me the reason behind that, you application is already loaded in the Memory to give the Service (same as ORACLE Instance). That's the difference.

  • Anyone figured out how to import P2 720p footage to FCPX?

Hello Final Cut Pro X Discussers.
Problem: Panasonic P2 720 footage of any kind cannot be imported in to FCPX.
To my knowledge, there has been a shockingly disregarded problem in FCPX where you can not import and transcode 720 resolution video from Panasonic P2 cards. MXF files to be exact.
How could Apple/Final Cut Pro team overlook this for so many versions now? What's odd is we can import 1080 footage off the same P2 cards fine, but for some reason 720, at any frame rate, creates an error and cannot be transcoded.
Has anyone found a solution to this issue?
Thanks for your tips and advice FCP community.

@BenB - What format are you shooting in with P2? I have an HVX200, and when I shoot in 1080 at any frame rate, I also DO NOT have problems importing directly from camera or otherwise. However, whenever I shoot footage in 720p at ANY frame rate, I DO have problems importing.
The camera pops up in the "Import from Camera" window, I can see the clips, I can even play them, and after I select all or individual clips and hit "Import", FCPX tries importing them for a little bit and after a couple minutes an error window pops up saying there was a problem importing clip.
This happens whether I import directly from the camera, or from an archive that I copy to my local machine.
What's most surprising to me about this dilemma is the complete lack of documentation or response on the internet altogether. I see no official comment on the matter from Apple, nor Panasonic. Nor do I see reasonable alternative solutions, other than "Use FCP7 to Log&Transfer your P2", or buy one of the crappy overpriced third-party scam softwares out there.

  • How do I get AVCHD footage into FCPX?

I have a Panasonic HMC 150 HD camera that records in AVCHD. The files have an ".MTS" extension on them. I'm using Final Cut Pro X and trying to get the files to import using the "Import" function under "File." No luck. Do I have to convert these files using another program. If so, what's the best way to do the import without losing any quality?

One way I import older .mts flies I have stored on hard drives without archiving the complete folders and such (just the files) is using toast 10.
I go to make a blu-ray video disc, drag all the video MTS files I want to the new disc to make. I turn off menus and set automatic encoding. When I make a disc image I set it for DVD for the disc size as FCPX seems to like it over BD
Also it will not reencode the files if they are all they same format. I was doing this to add old footage in to imovie and it seems to be working with FCPX. Just mount the disc image and FCPX should see it as a camera archive disc.
Questions, just ask, sometimes I have trouble instructing.

  • Anamorphic DV footage in FCPx.

I've tried to import anamorphic DV footage into FCP X, but I cannot get the aspect ratio to 16:9. How can I tell FC(P) X that the footage is anamorphic?

I'm very happy to report that the FCPX 10.0.6 update has restored the ability to flag video as anamorphic!
Or, as Apple more accurately puts it: "Sometimes the metadata tag specifying 16:9 playback in the video file is missing or set incorrectly. In Final Cut Pro, you can set this tag so that the video plays correctly with a widescreen 16:9 aspect ratio."
The swtich is found in the Inspector's settings view.  Full details on this page:
    https://help.apple.com/finalcutpro/mac/10.0.6/help/index.html?localePath=English .lproj#ver3363b44e
    FANTASTIC!
NOTE:  As with the old FCP7, this only changes the aspect ratio of the material when viewed in the Final Cut application. In otherwords, it does not alter the tag in the source file in your 'Final Cut Events' folder.  So, if you want to view that file correctly in another application, such as QuickTime Player X, you still have to make the changes using Atom Inspector (or other such software descibed in this thread.)

  • Hey all - I am just learning version 6.0.6 - can't use green screen footage

When I try to use chroma key (edit green screen footage I've shot) the option is greyed out. Thanks for the help!

Sorry to break it to you, but FCP6 is not FCPX. Go to the Final Cut Studio forum with your question.
Er, this discussion showed up as an FCPX discussion when I clicked on it. Not sure why, but i apologize if you posted it  correctly in the first place....

  • How do I use my external harddrive with FCPX?

So I have 1 TB external hard drive and want to back up my movie and media files using the hard drive so I don't take up a ton of space on my internal HD.
How do I do it so it doesn't save onto my computer, and only my hard drive. Final Cut pro uses up a lot of memory when I try to make videos.

In FCPX, in the menu-bar is 'Help', which should you link to the Manual.
Be sure, you get the actual one for your version of FCPX ..
    Glad to helpful!

  • Letterboxing when using 16:9 footage in 4:3 project...

    Hi,
I have a project here that is DV-NTSC-720x480-4x3.
Now when I import footage that is 720x480 / 4x3 it is displayed properly e.g. this file:
    Codec : MPEG-2 Video
    Codec profile : Main@Main
    Codec settings/Matri : Standard
    Bit rate : 9800 Kbps
    Bit rate mode : CBR
    Width : 720 pixels
    Height : 480 pixels
    Display Aspect ratio : 4/3
    Frame rate : 29.970 fps
    Standard : NTSC
    Chroma : 4:2:0
    Interlacement : Top Field First
    Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.946
When I try to import footage that is 720x480 / 16x9, PP Pro automatically does a Pan & Scan on the footage e.g. on this file:
    Codec : MPEG-2 Video
    Codec profile : Main@Main
    Codec settings/Matri : Standard
    Bit rate : 8000 Kbps
    Bit rate mode : CBR
    Width : 720 pixels
    Height : 480 pixels
    Display Aspect ratio : 16/9
    Frame rate : 29.970 fps
    Standard : NTSC
    Chroma : 4:2:0
    Interlacement : Top Field First
    Bits/(Pixel*Frame) : 0.772
Regarding this automatic Pan & Scan for 16:9 footage (in a 4:3 project) I have a few questions...
    1. Am I right assuming that the pixels are "stretched" when doing a Pan & Scan on imported 16:9 footage (in a 4:3 project) ?
--> meaning: the quality is worse than using letterboxing ?
    2. How can I apply letterboxing on 16:9 footage imported into a 4:3 project ?
--> I read the manual and it states that u can adjust that with the Motion properties Scale & Position but is there an automatic solution in PP Pro ?
--> I've adjusted the Scale to 75.5 % (which looks okay) but what is the correct percentage ?
    3. Where can I change settings in PP Pro to put all 16:9 footage (in a 4:3 project) automatically in letterbox format ?
As always, thanx for your help in advance !
    Mike

This is what I would do...
First my question is: are you working in HD or SD?
Second, make a new sequence. (make sure it prompts you to select what sequence you want). If you're working in SD (standard definition) select DV NTSC 48khz Anamorphic. This basically means, that you're working in 720x480 SD but with 16:9 ratio.
If you're working in HD. make a new sequence selecting: HDV - 1080 60i. HDV aspect ratio, by default, is already 16:9.
Thats all you should have to do. Don't distort each clip one by one. You'd be wasting time.
Oh, i just realized another thing. How you Captured the footage! This is crucial. If the footage is 16:9...how did you capture it?
    let me know...

  • 3D Camera Track feature in AE CS6 using static video footage

Today I placed a camera on a tripod at the back of a room so that I could record a presentation that was being made at the front of the room.  During the presentation, the presenter was standing beside or moving in front of a screen that had a PowerPoint presentation on it.  What I want to do is place some animations, movies or images on the screen instead of the PowerPoint slides during parts of the presentation.  My thought was to use the new 3D camera tracker in AE CS6 to paste this alternate content onto the screen using one of the analyzed track points.  When the presenter moves in front of the screen I want it to look like the image is pasted to the screen so the image looks like it is between the screen and presenter and my audience viewing the resultant web videos will be none the wiser.  I have seen this trick performed during one of the Adobe CS6 launch videos, but in this instance, it was dealing with footage that was panning around a person standing near a wall.  My footage, on the other hand is static and does not move.  Is this effect possible in my case?  Many thanks for your help!
    Paul B.

You simply use the conventional 2D Corner Pin or even a manually placed (3D) layer. If the shot is static, there is no point in using the 3D tracker at all. It will fail, anyway, for mathematical reasons. The masking you will have to do either way...

  • Low quality from PrE12 using GoPro3 black footage

    Hi there,
First post here. I have used PE8 many times in the past, so I kind of know what I am doing. However, I just got PE12 and I have been working on a project I shot with the GoPro hero 3+ Black edition, shooting in 1080p @ 60fps.Typically with PE8 I would convert the files to AVI before bringing them into the program, but with 12 it says MP4 is a native file type, so I skipped this step. I am experiencing a low quality playback in the editor, and I thought maybe my PC wasnt up to par anymore, or my playback settings were off, so I burned it to a DVD and played it on a TV and it was absolutely terrible. I wasn't given any options to a project setting like in PE8, and I read that PE12 does it for you. I went to the settings, but I was unable to change anything, so how can I make my high quality footage into a high quality final product?
In Edit>Project settings>general, it is AVCHD 1080p square pixel, 59.94fps,
Video, 1920x1080, 60fps Drop frame timecode
This all seems pretty normal to me, so is there something I am missing? Would I have better results if I did convert to AVI?
    Thanks much in advance!

What computer operating system is your Premiere Elements 12 running on?
If you have not already, please update from 12 to 12.1, using the opened project's Help Menu/Update.
With version 11 and 12, the program is designed so that the project takes over setting the project preset based on
the properties of the first video you drag to the Timeline. Sometimes it does it correctly, sometimes not. For the sometimes
not moments, then you set the project preset manually as described in the following link (File Menu/New/Project).
ATR Premiere Elements Troubleshooting: PE11: Accuracy of Automatic Project Preset (New Project Dialog) Setting
Once the project preset is set, you can deduce the project settings in Edit Menu/Projects Settings/General, but there are no
significant changes you can make at that point.
If you say that your source was 1920 x 1080 @ 60 progressive frames per second, then your Edit Menu/Project Settings/General
reading would indicate that you or the project set the project preset correctly. When you dragged the file to the Timeline for the
first time was there an orange line over its content - or rather no colored line? For now, I am assuming no colored line.
Right click the Edit area monitor, select Playback Quality, and then Highest. What is the quality of your video at this point when viewed
    in the Edit area monitor?
    Go to Publish+Share/Computer/AVCHD and set Presets + MP4 - H.264 1920 x 1080p30.
Then under the Advanced Button/Video Tab of that preset, customize the export settings for 1080p60, using the following settings
    exactly as shown.
What does that AVCHD.mp4 (1080p60) look like on your computer player(s)?
We will be watching for your results.
Pending further results from you, on hold are questions about your computer resources, your video card/graphics card, Administrator setup,
    QuickTime install, etc.
    Thanks.
