Can my iMac handle Sony 4K footage through FCPX? I'm running with 3.1ghz i5 with 16GB of RAM

I am looking to purchase the new Sony FDR-AX1 as I get my videography business up and running and am wondering if my iMac will be able to handle editing the footage?

Was wondering even with best graphics card and thunderbolt raid, will iMAC support 4k monitor via thunderbolt , direct from iMAC or through a dock? If not is it because no HDMI port?

  • How much hard drive RPM can this iMac handle?

    Hello!
In my office there's an *iMac Indigo G3 @ 400Mhz* (serial number RN03820ZJV8) and I need to replace its hard drive with a new one with more capacity.
Am being offered hard drives with different RPMs (5,400, 7,600, etc.) but I need to know how much can this IMac model handle, I don't want to over-heat it.
However, I couldn't find that specific data on apple's web site...
So as an alternative way of knowing this I thought that it would be a good idea to know the RPM of the current hard drive as it has worked well for several years:
    "*Fujitsu MPG3204AH E:*", capacity of 19.09GB (serial number: VL00T1A09W09).
But I haven't been able to find that info either!
Anyone out there who can answer:
1.- What's the maximum amount of RPM this specific iMac model can handle without overheating?
    And/or:
2.- What's the RPM for that specific hard drive?
    Best!
    Danny

Several years ago, there were concerns about the faster 7,200 RPM drives causing heat issues in the convection-cooled, slot-loading iMacs. In actuality, the hard drives manufactured today run more smoothly, cooler, and quieter than the first generation of 7,200 RPM drives. You won't have any problems installing a 7,200 RPM drive. The onboard IDE controller can only recognize a maximum formatted drive capacity of 128 GBs, so a 120 GB drive is ideal, but hard to find now. A 160 GB drive is usually the smallest drive stocked by many retailers today, but it would only be recognized as 128 GBs after formatting. As for the Fujitsu MPG3204AH-E drive, the "AH" in the model number indicates a 7,200 RPM drive, whereas earlier drives with "AT" in the model number were 5,400 RPM drives.

  • What OS can my iMac handle?

My iMac is 333 mhz, G3, tray loading. It is currently running on OS 8.6. I want to install a newer operating system.
Should I go with OS 9, or can I run OS X? Is one or the other more suitable for my computer? Once I figure out which operating system to buy, where can I find it?
iMac   Mac OS 8.6 or Earlier

Hey, I also have a 333MHz processor iMac tray loader. I got a mac os 9.0 disk from a friend and upgraded it to 9.2.2 with apple updating. I also have 64 MB ram which I am going to change to 512 MB so I can load mac os X 10.2. I am really please with mac os 9.2.2 with this computer even with a 64 MB ram. The highest both our iMacs can get up to is mac os x 10.3.9 if we increase the processor but I've heard you need atleast a 400 Mhz processor and 512 MB ram for 10.3.9 to work decently. I am going to increase it to 10.2.9 once I get my new 2 256MB rams and see what happened. I wouldnt get any version of 10.3.9. My friend has a iMac g3 500 MHZ with it and in some applications it runs fairly slow. If you arent looking into increasing the ram, just go to 9.2.2 and stay there because mac os 10.0 requires 128 MB ram and even with 128 MB ram it will run slowly. Right now I Have 9.2.2 and I am happy with it. Peace.

  • Can my iMac handle games?

I bought an iMac with the below configuration about 6 months ago and love it. I've not tried playing games on it, but would like to purchase the new call of duty. I don't know if my system is up to snuff from a graphics/video card perspective. How do I tell? The game requires an ATI Radeon X1600 or NVIDIA GeForce FX7300 video card + 128MB of VRAM. My config is below:
    IMAC 20/SD
    2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2GB 667 DDR2 SDRAM - 2x1GB
    320GB Serial ATA Drive
    SuperDrive 8x DL
    Apple wireless Mighty Mouse
WL KYBRD & MAC OS X KIT

If you run System Profiler you will learn all the details of your iMac. I think you are talking about Call of Duty 4. I don't think that you will have a problem with it.

  • How much sdram can the iMac 2007 20" dual core 2.4gHz take?

How much sdram can the iMac 2007 20" dual core 2.4gHz take?

    Not SDRAM but SO-DIMM.
The max RAM is offically, 4 GB (two 2GB PC2-5300 667MHz DDR2 SO-DIMM) module but, with larger modules released after that model's specs were written, you can achieve 6GB with one 2GB plus one 4GB module.
You must get the 4GB from a Mac Savvy vendor or it won't work. OWC has the larger modules that are well-tested in Macs:

One way to test is to Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, Test for problem in Safe Mode...
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive
    Reboot, test again.
If it only does it in Regular Boot, then it could be some hardware problem like Video card, (Quartz is turned off in Safe Mode), or Airport, or some USB or Firewire device, or 3rd party add-on, Check System Preferences>Accounts>Login Items window to see if it or something relevant is listed.
Check the System Preferences>Other Row, for 3rd party Pref Panes.

  • Can't Conform Red footage through Cinema Tools?

    Hi there, need advice.
I can't conform off line Prores footage with original R3D files.
    1. I created database by dropping the hard drive ikon with original Red footage into Cinema Tools. Cinema Tool creates the file with extension .ctdb (cinema tools data base)
    2. From FCP I exported EDL of my project/sequence.
    3. Then, I opened Color and imported EDL,
    4. New window pops up and asks for database file.
    5. Choosed database.
    6. Color loads the cuts into timeline but it *doesn't connect/import* original R3D files. Why?
    What am I doing wrong?
Also, I did this workflow before successfully but for some reason it doesn't work now.
    Many thanx,
    ps
    Color 1.5.2
    REDCODE 4.2
    footage shot with build 21
    frame size 4096x2304

    Never mind.
Step 4 and 5 was not necessary. I guess Color remembers database from previous projects.

  • Can a supped up imac handle basic lightroom and photoshop usage?

I need to upgrade to a imac or a new mac pro.  The mac pro doesn't come with anything but the computer.  the imac comes with everything, keyboard, monitor, etc.  But can it run lightroom and photoshop as fast as I need without over heating and slowing down?

If you need speed, the i7 CPUs are the fastest. If you can't afford a high capacity SSD, consider the largest capacity Fusion drive.  If you are working a lots of images then, I would advise getting your iMac with only the base 8 GBs of RAM, then when you get this iMac, purchase cheaper third party Mac compatible RAM.
I would install, at least another 8 GBs of for a total of 16 GBsof RAM, but if you can afford. it, load up on more than 16 GBs of RAM.
Correct and reliable Mac RAM can be purchased from online Mac RAM sources Crucial memory or OWC (macsales.com).

  • HD Advice - Can My System Handle It?

I just upgraded from PrE version 4 to version 9.  So far so good working with my .AVI footage and stills.  That being said, I want to upgrade to hi def.  I'm considering picking up a Panasonic HDC-SD60 camcorder (records MPEG4-AVC/H.264) and Blue Ray burner.  My question is, will my 6-month old desktop have the horsepower to handle working with the HD footage?
I'm running an Intel Core i3-530 processor (2.93GHz, 4MB L2 Cache) with 6GB of DDR3 Dual-Channel 1333MHz RAM.  If it matters, I'm also using an 250MB NVidia graphics card and running Win 7, 64 bit.  I've got a ton of available HDD space -- two 1TB internal drives.  I always capture and store video footage on the secondary drive.
I feel like my machine should be robust enoguh to work with the HD footage and output blue ray disks.  Even so, I would like to have some confidence that I'll be able to handle the format before I drop the $$ on the new camcorder, blue ray burner, extra SDHC cards, etc.  I appreciate any thoughts/comments.
    Thanks.

    Camera:
I have just been through what you are considering and after a lot of research on all available brands, this is what I did -
Bought a Sony HDR CX350 camera (now about $1000)
It works beautifully on my big Sony Bravia screen - as good as the best blue ray pics.
Movie colours and resolution fantastic on 1900 x1080i
Shake stabilization is the best I have seen in a moderate price camera.
Handles a wide variety of lighting conditions very well automatically while still giving you good manual control
The touch screen spot focus is better than you could ever do with a focus ring.
Solid state recording - no hard drive
(Don't buy any Sony cheaper models - they are a completely different story)
As far as the computer goes your system is better than mine however I found spreading over three hard disks by far the most important.
I have heard that laptop motherboards may not be as fast due to heat and size restrictions  so I cant comment on yours however if you cant fit three sata drives then you may have speed problems even with a super processor. External drives for backup purposes may also be slow
If you are a professional editor where time is money then you should go the quad, multi disk route but if only an amateur the following is quite acceptable -
My Computer is a 2 year old Intel Core duo 2.4g   4mbRAM
    3 hard disks. 1=OS & pagefile, 2=Media, 3= all project files
I can shuttle up and down a hour timeline without any delay ( as long as I only reveral the pics in the timeline when I really need them which is not often)
Normal piecing clips together and previewing is as fast as anyone would want. Only about 2mb of the ram is in use at any time.
Before I split and set up the disks this way it was very slow to edit
Originally 2 of my drives were connected as Raid. I unraided them and now they are two sepearate disks - much faster
The things that take up time and are improved by a quad processor are -
Previewing or making fine adjustments to a complicated transition, or effect edit. You have to render the aread around the edit if you really want to see what the end result is without jerkyness. This takes sometimes half a minute to do each time but once rendered you don't have to wait unless you make a change to that point. This is about four as fast on a quad machine. Increasing the memory doesnt help because it is caused by the processors running flat out  to keep up with the frame rate.
Conclusion: you will wonder how you ever thought SD was good when you change to HD. Even my 75 yr old wife was amazed!

  • Importing Sony PMW EX1 footage into FCPX

I just got a Sony PMW-EX1 (not the 1r).  I'm not very familiar with this format and I'm having trouble getting my footage into FCPX.  I imported a clip the way I thought it should be done and it simply showed up as a green clip.
Would someone familiar with this camera and FCPX help me get my footage ingested for use in FCPX.
    General information:
Camera connected via usb and card can be seen in the browser.
I searched through the card until I found a file named pir80684_01.MP4
When I imported the file the clip is completely green.  When I try to open the file in Quicktime I get this error.
The operation couldn’t be completed. (OSStatus error -12909.)
FCPX said to access the camera via camera import, and then create a camera archive.  This was not possible for me as the camera did not show up in the camera import section.

    This came from Twezk Digital:
"There is no “native” XDCAM EX support (unlike native DSLR support) in the new FCPX — you still have to use Sony software to “wrap” your XDCAM files into a Quicktime file and then import your clips from there. And the new XDCAM Browser won’t do the trick, nor will the Clip Browser, no, you have to use something you may not have used before: XDCAM Transfer. If you think of XDCAM Transfer as your new Log & Transfer window, I guess it is about the same, it just feels wrong to have an “evolutionary” new video editor and need to switch out to an older third-party application for a codec that has been around for so long now."

  • AVCHD? Can Premiere Pro handle the longer clips?

I'm thinking of purchasing the Sony NX5E but have been hearing terrible things about NLE system not being able to handle the AVCHD codec, thus playback being really choppy.
Is this still the case or have adobe addressed the issue.
Think im gonnna put the order for the NX5 on hold for a bit!!
    Thanks in advance!

    Hey Harm,
It was this forum that brought this to my attention. Some of the MVP's and staff have commetted by saying adobe premiere does have known issues with 'Spanned' clips.
I do have a Mac Pro, Quad 2.6 with 16gig RAM, so would I be ok?
Greg Baber,Nov 11, 2012 5:24 PM   in reply to MickeyfilmReport
The known issue with AVCHD is playing back spanned clips - those that are over a certain length so the camera splits them into separate files.  This is not the same thing as saying that Premiere just plays back slow.  For a performance issue, don't assume that it is the bug - look into other possibilities. Also, if you are having a hard time working in AVCHD footage, for whatever reason, a step that can help is to transcode your footage.  Prelude does a good job, and the problem footage that I've worked with was transcoded without issue.  Go into a good intermediary codec, like DNxHD for Mac, and it that could resolve your issue.
Just sounds like quite an issue?
    Thanks,
    H

  • How much RAM can my computer handle?

I have a iMac that was manufactured mid 2011 21.5 inch display.  The specs say it can only handle 16GB of RAM but here's the response I got from the RAM manufacturer:
"Whist your official manufacturer specification recommends 16GB maximum capacity, we can confirm that your iMac can support up to 32GB because this has been rigorously tested in this system and is guaranteed compatible.
But I can set up a refund for you, if you would still like to purchase other memory modules."
    Here is my response:
"Can you guarantee in writing that 32GB of RAM will work for my machine and not hurt it? If it breaks because of too much RAM do you replace the computer?"
Please advise 16GB or 32GB.  By the way, I gave the manufacturer the serial number of my iMac so they shouldn't gotten this wrong.

Get your hands on the ever-useful app, Mactracker. It lists all the specs for one's Mac including the latest capacity for RAM.
You can get it here or at the Mac App store (and iOS store)
