Animating "Drawing" in Flash

I'm sure this is a frequent question, but I haven't found the right search terms to yield results.
I'm attempting to animate the drawing of a line... A line with about 10 segments, which I basically want to be drawn in from the top to the bottom of the stage.  It seems that this can be done with masks, but I'm curious if there's a way to have it actually be drawn in... (hopefully without the use of AS).
Thanks in advance!

Without the use of AS your only option would be to use a timeline tween where you either move a mask over the line or gradually change one dimension. The mask approach would be the most likely to resemble what you probably want.

    Cant draw in flash pro cc on surface pro 3 with latest n-trig wintab drivers. Many others online say they have this issue on surface pro 3 also...Is there not some type of current fix. Someone on the adobe forums said the problem was fixed internally in flash pro and that the fix will come with next adobe flash pro update, but when is that?
    Flash updates don't exactly  come every month or even 2 months, and this issue needs some type of current fix because there are many ppl also having this issue, which basically makes Flash Pro useless, what good is an animation program if you cannot draw in it on a tablet that literally SPECIALIZES in pen/drawing usage. So anything out there ??

    its very frustrating as I'm paying monthly for CC and can't use one the programs I need for my design job! Looking at other programs.

    I have an avi video file that i'd like to make into an animated gif in flash. How do I go about doing this? I know there is an option in photoshop where you can import the video frames onto layers. Is there something similar in flash?

  • Embedding a Flash animation in a Flash Site

    I'm looking for a solution to the following problem. I am
    developing my website in Flash and I would like to show examples of
    interactive flash animations I have developed. I imported my my
    .swf animation to my flash site library, but when I drag and drop
    it to the stage the following happens:
    1. The animation plays from frame to frame without stopping.
    2. Elements which were hidden (off the stage) in the
    animation now show up on the stage.
    3. When I open the animation in edit view (double click the
    animation on the stage) the entire animation appears as individual
    frames on one timeline.
    I would like to maintain the interactivity of the animation
    on the site (i.e. buttons, tool tips) and I suspect there is a way
    to embed the animation in the flash site while in flash.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

    You don't really want to add new files that way. In addition
    to the problems that you list, you will also be making one, large,
    file. This means that it will take longer to download, and possibly
    play poorly.
    You should keep these independent .swf files as they are, and
    "import" them using either AS2's loadMovie() or AS3's URLRequest()
    to bring each file into your movie.

  • Drawing in Flash question regarding Illustrator-like technique....

    Hello,
    I have a question and I've tried looking through the help file and Google search. This question is in regards to drawing lines in Flash via the Pencil tool (and/or the paintbrush tool).
    In Illustrator, using either the paintbrush and pencil tool, I can draw lines and then draw more lines that continue off the existing shape. If I double-click either of these tools in the toolbar, I can choose "Keep Selected". What this does is allow you to make more than one separate drawing path, keeps it selected after first line put down, allows you to make additional lines and it continues off the existing path (in the end continuous line creations forms one shape). So instead of numerous paths per line draw, it makes it one continuous shape. How this helps when drawing is it creates nice corners (smooth or sharp corners that don't appear separated).
    In Flash, how do I do this? I tried the pencil tool and brush (although I seek this feature primarily for the pencil tool). When I draw a path, stop, and try to draw a new path it doesn't continue off of it. I tried this with the line tool as well... no luck.
    Thanks!

    I too would love to know how this is done. I use Freehand, macromedia created freehand and flash, I use the two together as was the Macromedia way to do so, probably to offset the lack of decent drawing tools in Flash.  The pen tool and bezier curves, handles etc, THE  correct way of drawing lines, curves that leave a straight line correctly etc, lines that are one continual vector when drawn, the ability to continue a line etc, such basic graphic drawing functionality seems to be missing in Flash. Try drawing a line then modifying the bezier tangent handles, I cant see how thats done. By now it should be in there, we are at CS5 so Adobe, what are you playing at ?
    It was told to me that the only way to get proper lines and draw in Flash is not to draw in Flash ! Draw in Freehand then import it in. So I do that !  Then Adobe deny the ability to import Freehand into CS5...hells bells !  Freehand and Flash go hand in hand, they always did, until Adobe get hold of it all.   I have all my Freehand artwork and no easy way to get it into Flash now, Illustrator is not an option to translate it into flash by the way. I have to import into Flash 8 then open the flash 8 file into CS5. What are Adobe up to ?  They should be improving Flash and basic drawing ability along with it.  CS5 is also very slow compared to CS4, complaints all over the net on this, I think I shall downgrade to CS4, it supports Freehand !

    Ha!
    Just scratch the surface by using the search functions on

    websites that showcase flash animations since version 3 back
    in the late 90's - many websites have

  • Animated logo -- and Flash export?

    Hi Folks -
    So, I'm working on animating this logo:
    http://giantmecha.com/uploadedimages/helpme.thumbnail_23554.png
    Seems simple, but I can't figure how to go about smoothly animating it. Behaviors? Keyframes? Help. =/
    Also, I'm hoping to use it for the web. So, my secondary question is: if I import the Motion file into After Effects, can I then simply export the animation as Flash?
    Any help would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks.
    Evan

    Looks like a simple animation. If Flash is your target, I would do the whole thing in Flash using masks. You can take a Illustrator file and just mask and animate the layers.
    When you do this in Flash I think that you will find that your file size will be much smaller than producing a .flv or .mov file. Also your logo seems like it is all vector based, thus scalable.
    I wouldn't even think about bringing this into After Effects from Motion. No need to, too many steps than what is needed.
    You can however turn a Motion file that has been imported into After Effects in to a .swf file. There are limits, as somethings will not be exported a vector art. See Adobe website for infor. They have tutorial videos on the subject.
    Do you have Flash? With the new CS3, you can import your Illustrator/ Photoshop layers into Flash layers which you can then animate.

  • Animated Gears in Flash

    Hello,
    But before I will go into details of my problem let me state something - I'm absolute beginner in Flash. I got my copy yesterday and just today I ordered Flash CS5 Essential Training from fine folks at Lynda.com. So if you don't mind explaining how stuff works to a complete novice read on!
    I was haunting the net in search of some tips how to make animated cogs but I didn't really found a lot of useful informations. Thanks to one website (you can find it here) I know about cog ratio and how to figure out how many times each of them have to turn. Other sites I stumbled upon explain how to make a gears but arent giving me options to determine exact shape, dimension and number of those.
    Technically I can't figure out how to actually make cogs in Flash. Drawing a circle is simple enough but how about the teeth on the circle? I found a tutorial here saying to use "Rotate Arbitrary" command, but author of that tutorial is referring to Flash Designer and I was unable to find similar option in CS5. I think that I need to draw a circle and then, somewhere on the side, draw just one of the teeth of desired size and shape. Next, in some obscure and esoteric way, I need to "add" it to a circle and rotate / duplicate it. If I want to do another gear I just use different size of a circle but the same teeth - and use cog ratio to figure out proportions and time needed for full circle. Could someone tell me if I'm on the right track and what is this magic spell used for creating teeth on the circle?
    I just want to make simple black and white gears and animate them. But how about making those gears appear 3D? Could someone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks!

  • Drawing in flash shortcuts?

    This might be a loaded question, I am working on a hand drawn animation using Flash and expect to be putting enormous amounts of work into it to produce something really nice. My animation has some fast-paced moments and some slower paced events. I try to make good use of subtleness in my work, somel barely noticable movements for aesthetic purposes, etc. I was wondering about other ways to work around some scenes in my animation by using some tricks to help lighten some of my load in drawing? Of course, I want to keep things looking uniform and wouldn't want the work to suddenly look like the entire style may have changed somewhere mid-animation but there must be ways to help me cut down on the amount of drawing I would do, yes? What methods can you suggest?

    Corbin -  I understand exactly what you're getting at.  How to use the tools available in the digital software to help ease (not eliminate) some of the workload of drawing each line one frame at a time.
    The number one piece of advice that comes to mind is don't forget about your 'copy/paste' capabilities.  If your character's right arm isn't moving for the next 10 frames, copy and past that piece of art instead of redrawing it for every frame.  If your a 'purist' (like me) your brain is immediatly screaming 'CHEATER!', but it's not a cheat. The masters back in the day would do the same thing with layered drawings - if you watch an old cartoon from the 40's or 50's you might notice a slight color shift in parts that aren't moving at the moment.  That's because they're 'hold frames' and the drawing is repeated for as many frames as necessary before it starts moving again.
    Along those lines, one thing that Toon Boom does that Flash doesn't is give you the option of keeping your lines as independent vector pieces, instead of merging everything into one object.  For example - in Flash if you draw a line using the brush tool, and then draw another line that touches the first, the two lines 'connect' and become one vector object.  In Toon Boom you have the option to turn that 'mergie-ness' off or on as you need.  Keeping the brush strokes as separate pieces helps in situations where you need to incorporate 'hold frames' but don't want to make a completely new library symbol.   For example, you have an arm in three pieces - upper arm, forearm, and hand.  In Flash you can copy the arm from one frame to the next, and then in the new frame, split the arm back into it's three pieces to do a sort of 'cut out' style movement that still gives the hand drawn look.  In Toon Boom, you don't have to continuously 'cut apart' the arm, as it retains it's segmentation from paste to paste.
    One last bit of advice, don't fall into the temptation to use the tweening capabilities that are built in Flash - not if your trying to stay true to the look of traditional hand drawn animation.  That's a real 'cheat' and will SERIOUSLY lower the production quality of your project.  Other than for moving cycling animation (like walks, or wing flaps) or 'camera moves' everything should be hand drawn whenever possible.

    Good luck, and happy animating!

  • In Flex 3 how to Stop and Replay .swf animation created in Flash

    Hi
    I have an animation file that is created in Flash (I think
    CS3). In Flex if I import it inside a SWFLoader or if I import it
    as an Image. It plays once and stops. Then I can not replay it. I
    also can not pause it when its playing.
    I have tried few things based on help and code available in
    the Web to of no help. I have tried to convert the swfLoader
    instance to a movie clip like so to stop
    var c:MovieClip = swfLoaderHeaddress1.content as MovieClip;
    c.stop();
    <mx:SWFLoader x="53" y="116" width="206" height="255.3"
    visible="true"
    source="assets/animations/curatorial/ZoomHeadress_2nd.swf"
    id="swfLoaderHeaddress1"/>
    It does not work.
    I have not created the .swf animation, I am not sure how it
    is done. I belive it may not be using any ActionScript as I know
    the artist who created it does not know ActionScript. Does
    something need to be done inside the Flash to support the stop and
    play? Or is there a way to restart/replay stop a .swf animation in
    Flex 3 no matter how (and whether or not its developed using
    ActionScript) its developed in Flash?

    One way is she has to add some AS code to the animation, or
    you can do it yourself.
    In swf there must be something like this:
    var connReciever:LocalConnection = new LocalConnection();
    connReciever.client = this;
    connReciever.connect("fromFlexToSWF");
    function myFunction(parameter:SomeClass):void {...}
    And in Flex:
    var connSender:LocalConnection = new LocalConnection();
    connSender.send("fromFlexToSWF", "myFunction", [..args]);
    The other way: in case with just play/stop there is a way to
    resolve this by using that Flex Component Kit (or maybe "Flex Skin
    Design Extension", i do not remember), it is something like she
    just adding labels to animation frames then she exports it with
    Flex Kit and then you can work with it like with an object with
    "states".

  • Animated Gif, XML & Flash 8

    I created an animated gif in photoshop cs3. I'm opening the
    gif file from inside an xml file using flash 8. It displays the gif
    just fine without the animation. I noticed that when I open the
    same gif file from an html file the browser (IE7) ask permission to
    run activex. Once I give it permission, the animation runs fine.
    When I run it from flash 8, IE7 doesn't ask permission...it just
    displays the gif file without running the animation. Any clues?
    -Manny

    One thing you may want to look at is the way your symbols are being triggered on the timeline. For example: you have an image of a ball bouncing, it goes down then up over the course of 30 frames and you are playing the FLA at 15 FPS so it takes a full two seconds per "bounce". If you are then putting that symbol into another timeline (probably the main timeline) you need to give the instance of that symbol the full 30 frames to go through the bounce before it stops, but if you give it 31 frames or forget to put a stop() command on the last frame, the sequence will repeat before clearing the stage.
    I would look at how you have positioned the object that is being looped in the main timeline and remember that with each keyframe you add to the timeline the animation will restart from the beginning. Imagine the bouncing ball graphic is a video clip of a ball bouncing and not a collection of vectors being repositioned on the stage. Every time you have a keyframe on the symbol of the video on the main timeline, the video restarts and appears to loop. The same may be happening with your animation on the timeline.
    Hope this helps.
