Animation in Photoshop

Hi, I have made my first animation in photoshop using rotoscoping technique, drawing on top of a quicktime video. I have made a new layer for every frame, and set the limit to every 2 frames. Everything was fine and I was about to export the animation, but noticed that the frame rate was wrong, so I jumped to timeline mode and changed it. I have been rotoscoping every other frame out of 25 fps material, so I was not sure about the frame rate to use for export... 25 or 12,5..? So I tried both settings, but after that, when going back to animation mode, the animation window only shows 13 frames, and there are 35 frames in the footage. I don't seem to be able to get it to show all the frames, even though they appear in the layers panel.
And also when playing back the footage, it only plays back every fourth frame, and when I render it out it also just shows every fourth frame, even though I rotoscoped every other frame. Am I just not understanding the logic? Is it not a good idea to jump back and forth between timeline and animation panel? Can I reset the frames somehow, or just export all the layers as frames?

Hi, thanks for your answer. So it's better not to mess with the fps settings I guess. The default frame rate seems to be 30 for animation timeline, it would be nice to be able to change that though. Also the default for output at least in my country is 25, so there's already a confict. I know I can bring it to AE and change the frame rate, but it's nice to minimize the hassle..
There also seem to be two different approaches to making a rotoscope animation in Photoshop. I followed the one where you import the footage as layers, make the layers into a group, then make another group where you create a new layer per each frame. The other approach is to import the footage as a video layer, then create another blank video layer on top of that, and start making the animation there. That actually seems a more straightforward. Any opinions about these two approaches?

  • Slow gif animations from photoshop

Hi all. I have to create two small gif animations. Each one is only 10 frames and the file size of my animations is under 40k when exported. But no matter what timing setting I use, they seem sluggish when viewed in any browser (FF, IE, Safari). I've tried 0.5, 0.2, 0.1, 0.05, and even 0.0 between frames. The animation should really only take half a second to complete but they seem to take up to two seconds to complete when view in a browser.
Yet I can view other gif animation on the web that are much larger in size and they seem to animate quickly and smoothly (compared to my slow and choppy ones).
is there a trick to getting fast, smooth animations from photoshop?
    Thanks!

There is no such feature in DW. DW knows nothing about GIF
    images other than
the fact that they are images. I'm guessing that you did not
    properly
export the animated GIF from Photoshop. When you open that
    image in the
    browser, does it animate?

  • How to add links to different images within an animation in Photoshop CS4?

    Hey guys,
I am trying to create an animation with photoshop cs4, but I was wondering if there is a way for me to add a link to each image as the animation is looping, that people can click on the image that is appearing on the screan at that particular moment and take them exactly to the link, and so on with the rest of the images within the animation. Please Help!!! I have no experience with CS4 as you can see or any other for that matter, so I would really appreciate any information that you can give me. Or if it's easier in Flash... please tell me how!! Thank you soooo much!!!

Exactly as Zeno said. You'll either need Flash/ Flash Catalyst or do it all with JavaScript inside the web design application.

  • Complaint: Animated GIF, Photoshop CS4

I am a freelance print designer. Needless to say that I have upgraded to the Design Standard Edition of the Creative Suite 4. Still, some customers ask me to do their web banners, too.
    Fact 1:
There is an animation palette in Photoshop CS4 Standard.
    Fact 2:
You can create animations with that palette.
    Fact 3:
You can save the animation as an animated GIF.
    Fact 4:
Opening the animated GIF, you only get the first frame, so you cannot edit the animation or content inside the GIF.
    Fact 5:
I need to alter a few animated GIFs which I created several years ago using Photoshop CS2. Due to a harddrive crash, I don't have access to the original layered PSD files any more.
    Fact 5:
Photoshop CS4, the most advanced image editing tool on the face of the earth, is absolutely useless at this point, and I have to find freeware or shareware to do the job. Finding and purchasing this sort of software is MY time, and that is MY money.
Whatever drove Adobe to cripple Photoshop CS4 Standard, whatever drove them to expel the simple "Open Animated GIF" feature from Photoshop CS4, it was the wrong decision.
This, Adobe, is a customer complaint. Take it serious. There is competition, and I hear a lot about GIMP these days.
    Frustrated,
    Gero

I know this thread is getting on a bit now, but I do have the answers.
Quite simply, as far as I can tell, this cannot be done without Quicktime installed.
To open an animated gif in CS4 on a PC:
    1. Go to File->Import->Video Frames to Layers
    2. In the File Name box type “*” ( or you can type the name manually) The window will now show every type of file
    3. Select your gif and you are done
To open animated gif in CS4 on a MAC:
    1.  Go to open, select your GIF, then in the bottom left corner of the open file dialogue box select Quicktime Movie as the format, then open your GIF.
    2.  You’ll need to open your animations window by going to window -> animation. This will bring up the time line.
    3.  If you want to have all of the frames broken up into layers, click the options in the animation window, and select “Flatten Frames into Layers”.
This will give you access to all the frames as layers and you can now edit the GIF as though it was a movie.
I hope this helps to ease somebody's frustration.

  • How do I export an animation from Photoshop with no background, to use in after effects?

Its been a few years since I've used photoshop and after effects together so hoping you can remind me how to do this.
I'm trying to export an animation created in photohop, its frame by frame, no background. I've been exporting it as an image sequence, now I"ve coloured it I need to solve this transparency issue.
Is there a way to export it to use in after effects on top of a background layer.
So I just want to see the character, no background, animation on top of my background layer in after effects, does that make sense??
Please don't say I need to have an alpha channel on each frame, that will take ages, there must be another way.
Please help I need to sort this ASAP
    Thanks in advance!
    x

    Thanks!
So this makes sense, I tried it, when I import into after effects (here is the psd.)
I get this window not sure what to be selecting, but I tried different things and it still isn't importanting as literally the animation with no background, have I missed something? whats strange is that when I import the psd, what does import is a strange monatage of snippets of the video I'm making in afterfx, not the completely separate animation i made in photoshop which I'm trying to work into the video.
very perplexing! any more help is much appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Loading .gif animations into Photoshop Elements 8 for Mac

For years I used Photoshop Elements 2 for Windows to make .gif animations with great success.
Then I switched to a Mac and bought Elements 8 for Mac.  Now, I am finding out that I can not load any
of the animations I made using Elements 2 into 8.  (And yet I can load animations I made using 8 into 2.)
In fact, I can not load any .gif animations into 8, other than if I make one and save it
as .psd.  8 allows me to make them, but not load them as .gifs.
My question:  Is there an easy way to load .gif animations into PS Elements 8 so a
person can work on the individual frames?  Am I going to have to convert any .gif animation I
want to import into 8 first into .psd?  All I seem to get when I try to load a .gif is the message
"This is an animated gif.   You can only view one frame." I have searched manuals and the
Net looking for a specific method of using PSE8 to load gif animations intact (not just one frame).
Is it possible?  Thanks. (I also have noticed that Elements 8 will not allow me to change the frame
speed -- it is unchangeable at .2)

    Dear Ms. Brundage -
I followed the directions detailed in your blog entitled "Moving a Catalog from Windows to Mac" as well as your description of the process on page 58 of your book "Photoshop Elements 9 - the missing manual."
I installed PE9 for Windows and converted my catalog.  I then backed up that catalog to an external hard drive.  I then connected the hard drive to my MAC on which I also installed Photoshop Elements 9 for MAC.  I opened the Organizer and tried to restore that converted catalog.  However, for each file in the converted catalog, a dialog box opened that said "Could not restore file:  /Volumes/Name of External Hard Drive/Filename.JPG."
I then made a second backup of the converted catalog using Photoshop Elements 9 for Windows and then tried to restore that catalog again on the MAC using Photoshop Elements 9 for MAC, again to no avail.
Do you have any idea what the problem may be?
    Thanks again.

  • How do I create a simple cartoon animation in Photoshop and transfer it into AE for better timing?

    The title.
I was wanting to make my own animation from scratch. I've always heard though that Photoshop didn't have good timing, so I was wondering how I could use AE for the timing.

In the photoshop timeline panel, click on the icon in the upper righthand corner of that panel. When the menu pops up, select document settings. Here you can change the timing to what ever you want. The higher the frame rate the faster the animation will be. The frame rate is like saying how many frames do you want to pass in 1 second of time. Hence the higher the number the faster the animation.
The issue with good timing stems from placing the animation inside a web browser. This is most noticable when using a gif format. As this format relys on the browser for the timing and can therefore run extremely slow.
This issue will hapen no matter which app you create the gif file on. When creating large animations it is much better to use a format that can handle it, such as avi, mov, swf, flv and few others.
Any video that is using one the "better" formats can easily be ported into After Effects. The main hurdle is the codec, but it was created on your system, then odds are good it will load into After Effects. There are exeptions of course such as currupted files, formats like swf, which are really meant as an end of the process format. (meaning use that format for sharing rather than editing) If it is for flash use flv instead, it is much easier to import into other editing apps.
Which format you choose to use will depend on your audience, the size of the file, the quality of the file, what media it will be played on. Take into account the operating system if it will be played on a computer.
    Hopefully this helps.

  • Animating a photoshop text layer in After Effects

Im trying to animate the test from a page that was built in photoshop. I save the layers all seperatly but AE just recognizes the text box not the text itself, so i am unable to use the text animations on it. Is this even possible and if so how do i get it to work right?

Have you tried Layer --> Convert to editable text? If that doesn't work, then it's a clear indication that something is up with the text like specific formatting being used, faux italic and bold text decorations etc.. AE can't replicate some of these things. It should show you the stored rasterized layer, though. Also check for grouping, clipping masks, layer styles etc. in the PSD. Certain combinations might also cause layers to not render...

  • Animating in photoshop cs6

The new timeline in photoshop cs6 is weird but I don't understand how I can use it for animating. I use photoshop for frame-by-frame animaiton (Not flash) and the new Timeline is confusing me. How do  I use this new time line for frame-by-frame animation similar to the Animation Timeline in Cs5?

Just came across this topic, but it doesn't really help. At school we created an animated Xmas card using Photoshop CS4. I wanted to continue working on it at home using CS6 and indeed, no problem at all.
But then I decided to start all over, from the beginning, and that's where things didn't appear to work.
How can I get that first frame? Switching, in the Timeline pallet at the bottom of the screen from "Created video timeline" to "Create frame animation" did not change a thing: no first frame appeared, neither did any of the icons become active. Since I could not get this thing to work, I switched back to CS5 in the end (I also have CS4 and CS3 still on my 2007 iMac running 10.6.8) to create this first frame, and then I could move ahead finishing things off in CS6, but I don't think that's the way to go.
So just one simple answer to my question: can this simple frame-by-frame animation (create one frame; duplicate it and change the setup; followed by creating in-between frames) be done in CS6 "normal" version. When I tried to find some answers around here, I ran into the problem where my normal Photoshop CS6 suddenly turned into a trial version of CS6 extended. I understand (and I was able to try this out) that frame-by-frame animation in CS6 extended is no problem.

  • Can I bring an animation from Photoshop into iMovie?

I wanted to know if you can bring an animation made in Photoshop, into iMovie? I'm making a video in iMovie and I really need this animation in the video but I don't know if it's possible.

    No.
You have to make (export) from iPhoto to make the video first.

  • Animation with Photoshop CC

    Hello!
I've just downloaded the Photoshop CC trial version and I'd like to make an animation. To animate you need to create a new blank video layer (Layers>video layer>new blank video layer)
I can't do that, since there is no video layer menu (not even greyed out). It was in the PS CS6 extended version, did they remove it in CC? What should I do?
    Regards, Alex

If it doesn't show up, your system may not have sufficient graphics hardware or simply be misconfigured. Check the status of OpenGL/ OpenCL in the prefs, update your graphics driver if possible...
