[ANNOUNCE] Ourfaces: Open Source Customer UI Components

Hi,
we have started an open source project with the aim to provide commonly needed customer JSF UI components. The project's name is Ourfaces.
We are not implementing the JSF standard but like to share useful UI components based on the standard under the Sun Public License. Therefore the components can be used freely, can be customized or enhanced by everyone, and improvements should be given back to the community.
Our vision is to have all commonly needed JSF UI components available under open source license - ready to plug them into any JSF supporting tool.
However, we are starting modestly: We enhanced the tree component provided by the reference implementation and set up a project at java.net. We are trying to get the first component running robustly. Next component on the roadmap is a table component.
If you are interested have a look at
ourfaces.dev.java.net
If you think that we are on the right way and you like to bring us a step further towards the vision, please, send me an e-mail.

Hi Matthias,
Let me state upfront that I am running JSF1.0 and have some other apps running fine.
I downloaded the new version. However, it looks a bit odd.
I looked at the table examples.
table/table.jsp is coded to use a tag called "ourfaces:panel_resultset". (Shown below) However this tag is not mentioned in the tld.
Also, the tld for table is very small only two attributes.
I tried to make the other examples work. But the tags are not even balanced. In:
table/example1.jsp
table/example2.jsp
the view tag is not closed properly.
As a result none of the table samples work.
I do see the latest timestamps on the files.
Please let me know if things are not quite ready yet?
Thanks,
Vinay

  • Java GUI open source components ?

    Hi guys;
I'm writing a desktop Java Application that I'm planning to sell later on.
The point is that I want the GUI to look sharp : so I don't plan to use the Ugly looking java Swings.
the look I'm looking for might be close to MS office 2003 or even better.
I wonder if there are some FREE OPEN SOURCE java GUI components that I can integrate into my code ?
Please let me know if you have any Ideas about this issue .
Many thanks for your precious Help !

    Try this:
UIManager.setLookAndFeel(UIManager.getSystemLookAndFeelClassName());That attempts to set swing's L&F to one which matches the OS you're running it on.

If you are starting a Java Web, you should use MVC and Standard tags,

  • FLV player component. Open Source/commercial options?

I'm returning to a project I've had on hold for a bit. We're
    now receiving
.flv files from our video team and we need to displaying them
    on our site.
Can anyone recommend some Flash FLV player components? Open
    source
preferred, but commercial or freeware would be OK too if
    highly recommended.
I've looked at OSFLV but that appears to require PHP back end
    scripts. Our
site is ASP.net so likely wouldn't work.
Ideally, it'd be a player that we could passe the FLV info to
    via the HTML
(so that we could incorporate the embed markup automatically
    via our CMS
    back end).

I beleave first of all you must decide how will you show your
    videos.
Do you have FMS? Or is webserver the only you have for your
    site? If
you don't have FMS and don't like to buy its license, then
    the only
possible way is to use HTTP Streaming or simple progressive
    download.
And you must seek for a player depending on your choice of
    the video
delivery method. HTTP Streaming is a great choice if you
    haven't FMS.
Though you need some scripting language/database engine at
    your web
server and some custom SWF (Flash FLV Player). Standard UI
    components
like FLVPlayback will not work with HTTP Streaming. Though it
    is not
so dificult to create such player using any Flash MX version
    >= 7.
You can find some brief description of HTTP Streaming if
    you'll try to
    search in Google:

  • Open Source - Commercial Software?

There's a lot of great open source code out there that comes in really handy for all sorts of common programming tasks. But upon reading carefully the licensing agreements, it seems to me that it's generally illegal to include such code in any standard commercial application.
    Example:
A young programmer gets hired by a small software development company. The company gets a contract with a local business to write some custom applications for in-house use, and our programmer friend gets handed the specs. Several components of the software he is asked to write are already available as open source, and certainly more robust than anything he could write on his own.
Legally, he only has two options:
Convince his company and their client to release the final program as open source - even though it may have no use outside of their business and was never intended for public sale.
Write all the code himself, ignoring the open source resources, taking much longer to create an inferior product.
Does this make sense? Am I misunderstanding these license agreements? It would seem to me that, for instance, all those great and useful Apache products are perfect for commercial applications and indeed seem to be developed with that in mind. (I can't imagine using Log4J in a tiny program I hack out at home to organize my hard drive etc)
Note that there is a difference between open source software (MySQL, Apache web server, other such apps), and open source tools (Log4J, Apache commons, many more) in that the tools are not really useful on their own but instead are used as part of other programs. The licenses seem to allow free use of the software, but require open-sourcing of any derivative software - meaning that a company can use MySQL as a database for anything they wish, but a developer working for that company can't use Log4J to write a frontend for that database without releasing the frontend as open source???

    But upon reading carefully the
licensing agreements, it seems to me that it's
generally illegal to include such code in anystandard
commercial application.I don't think so, although I'm no more a lawyer than
you are. The licence agreements vary widely. When I
look at the agreement for log4j, for example, I only
see the requirement that I have to put a copyright
notice and an acknowledgement in my software. No
prohibitions at all. That one's pretty
straightforward. But I'm still trying to make sense of
the LGPL.It all depends on the license.
Apache license allows ANY use and license for software using it as long as the Apache license is made available with a mention that components under that license have been used.
GPL on the other hand indeed requires that everything using any code released under GPL be released under GPL as well.
So if you were to write a 10MB application using a single 1KB GPLd module you have no choice but to release all your code under the GPL as well. This makes code under GPL impossible to use in commercial products or anything for which code needs to remain in-house for any reason.
Most other licenses fall somewhere in between. mySQL for example allows non-commercial use under any license but commercial use is barred unless you pay a license fee (in which case you get a different license).

  • Any open source component libraries...?

I could very well be getting ahead of myself but Ive been curious as of late. Are there any Open Source groups out there (that browse these forums) planning on developing some component libraries for JSF? I definitely see the need for some extended functionality in the area of data access.

Yes.... I've been working on one, but unfortunately, I can only do this in my spare time, which has been quite limited lately due to other projects. We'll announce something in this group when there's something worth taking a look at. Right now, there are only about 5 components, and two of these are layouts, containers, rather than widgets.

  • An open source framework for agile development with Sites

I am happy to announce the release of a new open source framework for sites development: AgileSites 1.0.0.beta1.
AgileSites is an open source framework built using standard and documented Sites API provinding a number of features meant to simplify development, mostly to make agile development and offshoring way easier and more manageable.
    Some of the features:
    - MVC with plain Java controller and pure HTML views
    - Templating done in jQuery style (like client-side javascript templating)
    - Integrated unit testing and build system
    - Integrated csdt so everything is source and can be stored in Git or Subversion and rebuilt with jenkins in minutes
    - Hot reloading of java classes, including the url assembler - you code in java without restarting the application server
    - Single jar deployment - all your site code is in a jar that can be easily tracked and moved around
    - A simplified API layer built on top of standard tag assets making development a breeze
    - Complete and unlimited access to the full Sites API
    - Keeps the JSP structure so the framework can be added to another site using JSP
AgileSites is available in his own dedicated site: www.AgileSites.org with a video showing his capabilites.

The framework is completely following WebCenter Sites standard. It is built on top of JSP and Java using only documented API and standard Java libraries. It is not different than any other site implementation. It is basically a pre-built site to make easier applying agile development practices. It is as supported by Oracle as any other custom website implementation on top of Sites.

  • Future of DW in a world dominated by open-source CMS

    Should database-driven page-generated-on-the-fly open-source
software solutions such as Joomla ad nauseum replace the more
traditional html page-based website, what then is the future of DW?
Might future versions of DW contain point-and-click cms-creation
capability? I ask because: (1) I'm not convinced that the
html-based sites will be replaced and (2) Site creation in DW is
    faster and really more fun...

    >I guess I'm thinking about $10,000 and less sites--a
    custom cms in this
    >case is
    > pretty much out of the question...
Not at all, IMHO. A Custom CMS can often be ideal for small
    sites like that.
They usally don't have a lot of different content types to
    manage, so you
can quickly customize a GUI to handle the one or two very
    specific types of
content they want and hand then a very customized, tailored
    solution.
That's often faster/cheaper than customizing a more complex
    system like
Joomla. Granted, there are also advantages to customizing
    existing systems
    as well.
    > one-time purchase
    > extensions designed for the Dw environment and not have
    to turn to Joomla
    > for
    > such capabilities...
Well, Joomla, for instance, has a ton of components.
I think the trend (for developers/consultants) is to pick an
    OS CMS platform
or two, get good at it, and use that exclusively for your
    solutions.
I've been doing custom stuff, but have gotten tired of it, as
    it does seem
like reinventing the wheel each time, even though it's the
    perfect wheel for
    the client every time.

  • Open Source project

    Open Source Project Announcement...
I have started an open source project to build a module for
PHP4 that will allow direct calls to Tuxedo services from
the PHP script, the project name is php-tuxedo.
Think about it for a second... The ability from inside a
PHP web page to directly call already existing Tuxedo
services anywhere in your environment. Just like PHP can
open a database connection to Oracle or Sybase, it would
open a Tuxedo connection as a Tux client to a Tuxedo
    middleware environment.
For those who have used PHP, you know how easy it is to
build dynamic web pages. But those pages are mostly limited
to database queries or flat file access for data. With this
project you could call all your existing enterprise Tuxedo
services directly. I believe this would be a very powerful
    enhancement to PHP's capabilities.
To those familiar with Tuxedo, you know about how powerful
an implementation of Tux middleware services can be for
    departmental and enterprise solutions.
I want to bring these two pieces together.
Project status. The project is in its early infancy, but
some parts are functional. I have successfully built a
client page that uses a STRING buffer to call a service with
tpcall and returns a STRING buffer back. Primitive? Sure,
but this is only the start. I have ideas of how to
implement many other functions and buffer types including
    FMLs.
There is much work to do, but if you are interested please
check out http://php-tuxedo.sourceforge.net. There you can
download my first cut and more importantly follow the
project as it progresses. For the really ambitious I would
welcome any testing or development help on the project.

normally monitor, so I may not see a reply on the list.

  • Open source shopping cart wont open with safari

    Hi all...
I'm designing cart templates for a company that supplies an interface for uploading product to an open source shopping cart. The problem is I can't open the shopping carts with safari. They are fine with firefox and on a PC. (forgive me for swearing) The sites are open source carts based on php scripting with a lot of compressed data. A software interface is used to upload products etc... The error I get is
"Safari can’t open the page “not sure if I can put the link here as it is a business”. The error was: “bad server response” (NSURLErrorDomain:-1011) Please choose Report Bug to Apple..."
It's the same for all the sites using the carts.
Is there a fix at the user end or does safari simply not have support for these carts. Any help would be awesome....

PCI Compliance. As a merchant (online or brick & mortar store), you must take necessary steps to ensure your customer's CC info doesn't fall into the wrong hands.  One way to do this is to pass your online customers off to a 3rd party processor like PayPal or Authorize.net. These companies are experts in safely gathering sensitive data, encrypting it and transmitting it to your payment Gateway and Merchant Bank account.  This way, your customers never enter any sensitive data into your site's databases which avoids a lot of headaches for the web developer and merchant.
Server Security. Use a reliable web host. I can't emphasize this enough.  Cheap hosting is no bargain especially if your host doesn't take reasonable steps to secure their servers at their end.
Lock down your php scripts & form log-ins to defend your site against possible hackers & robot exploitation.  If your site is ever compromised, you will need reliable backups of your Site files and MySql data.  Make sure to backup these files regularly and store them in a safe place.
Backend log-in.  Use strong, encrypted passwords -- 17 characters, upper & lower case with symbols.  If you can remember your passwords, they're not strong enough.  I keep mine written down in a Rolodex.
Change the Admin log-in name to something less obvious like GrandHighExhaltedMysticRuler or something only you will recognize as the site's admin level user.  It's also a good idea to change your server, database and backend log-ins regularly.
Finally, consider running SecureLive on your web server. I have it running on a dedicated server and this software has more than paid for itself.  It identifies hacker attempts, blocks the user and sends the hacker's IP address to an FBI database.  SecureLive - Home

  • EngLab - Open source mathematical/engineering platform

    Hello all,
I'm new to Archlinux and quite exited with it. Anyway, some colleagues of mine from the University and me have created an engineering platform for the Linux platform, although Windows builds are also available. If you like check it out, but be aware that it's still on an early development stage.
(I hope this is the right board to post this )
    Website: http://englab.sourceforge.net/
Now that I am into Arch I'm going to make some research and create a build system for it to run on Arch and with your help maybe enter the AUR.
Here is our press presentation for the first big release (now we're on 0.2.1alpha):
We are pleased to inform you that the 0.2alpha release of the open-source program EngLab has been published.
Our site is located to englab.sourceforge.net . You can download it from https://sourceforge.net/project/showfil … _id=206384
EngLab is a cross-compile mathematical platform with a C like syntax, intended to be used both by engineers and users with little programming knowledge. The initiative has been taken from a group of students a year ago.
Our goal is to develop an easy-to-use computaion and simulation platform with a C++ like syntax. We have adopted Matlab's structure philoshophy and C++ 's structured language syntax. There are various toolboxes (packages of functions relative to a certain scientific field), which depend on open-source libraries.
The EngLab distribution is available in two ways: there are two basic Englab releases, EngLab Console and EngLab GUI. EngLab Console allows EngLab's execution through the console(Linux or Windows). EngLab GUI gives the opportunity of using EngLab through a graphical user interface. EngLab GUI is implemented with the use of  the open-source library wxWidgets 2.8, providing additional usability compared to EngLab Console edition. EngLab GUI is independent, so there is no need for EngLab Console to be installed, in order to properly install and execute EngLab GUI.
Toolboxes are distributed as seperate packages. Their installation is possible either through EngLab Console or EngLab GUI. The reason is that those toolboxes depend on open-source libraries that have to be previously installed. So as the user not to be forced to install those libraries directly, user can install packages and toolboxes at his/her own will.
For the time being, EngLab Console edition is available for Windows and Linux and Englab GUI is available for Linux only.
Until now EngLab has the following features :
    - 16 types of variable declaration (int, float, ...)
    - Variable declaration with unlimited number of dimensions.
    - Loop structures (for, while, ...)
    - Arithmetic, logical and binary operations
    - Constant number declaration (pi, phi, ...)
    - Graphical manipulation of variable values of any dimension (Englab GUI)
    - Adjustable graphical environment (Englab GUI)
    - Editor for writing *.eng functions (Englab GUI)
    - Command history for the last 5 sessions
    - Immediate access to variables, constants and functions (EngLab GUI)
    - Recent files opened through EngLab (EngLab GUI)
Toolboxes that have been fully or partially implemented:
    - a package containing fundamental functions of C (trigonemetric, hyperbolic trigonometrical, ...)
    - a package containing some statistic functions
    - a package containing functions that allow convertions of the variable type
All these toolboxes accompany the basic two EngLab editions, since they do not depend on another open-source library. Moreover, some other toolboxes have been partially implemented:
    - a package that contains functions for the manipulation of 2-D matrices (determinant, inverse array, ...). This package depends on the open-source library NewMat10.
    - a package that contains functions for image processing. This package depends on the open-source library CImg.
    - a package that contains functions for image processing. This package depends on the open-source library OpenCV.
    Also, we develop
    - a toolbox for visual data representation(plots etc)
    - a toolbox that contains functins for manipulating polyonymials, root detection, computation of integrals and derivatives, special functions and more.
Those two toolboxes will be available in the next releases.
The disadvantage is the number of EngLab developers, which does not allow EngLab's quick development. Thus, helping us would be welcomed.
You can help us with the following two ways:
    - By reporting bugs, which you have observed during EngLab execution. You can report bugs in https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_ … tid=997443 . Moreover, you can suggest new features that would improve EngLab's usability and performance. New features can be suggested in https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?group_ … tid=997446 .
    - If you would like to get more into EngLab, you can become EngLab developers and help us. That requires C++ knowledge.
If you have read till here, that's a good sign. Wink
You could ask questions in the mailing list [email protected] or in the forum .

We are glad to announce that version 0.3 of Englab has been released. The new version contains several bug fixes and improvements in the kernel, a new and advanced GUI based on the Qt toolkit and toolboxes with several functions. Amongst the featured toolboxes are:
    - cimgbox, image processing and manipulation toolbox
    - plotbox, toolbox for plotting graphs and figures
    - dspbox, toolbox for Digital Signal Processing and audio processing
    as dynamic (external) toolboxes and:
    - analogfilters, toolbox for analog filter design
    - unit conversions toolboxes, complex numbers toolbox, polynomials toolbox, stats toolbox etc.
    as static (internal) toolboxes.
Englab is available for GNU/Linux, Unix (not tested) and Windows32 platforms.
