Annoying but not fatal bug uncovered in Aperture file size metadata.

The bug described below was found as a result of testing the relative print sharpness of the Aperture print routines. I printed an adjusted Canon 5D image with Aperture's print routine to a 4X6, 300ppi print output, then took the same image through P'shop, (as a PSD) downsized the file to the same dimensions and converted it to 8-bit color depth. Then printed the returned file through Aperture.
To my surprise when I was performing this comparison, I found that the file size shown in the metadata panel of the test file was not reduced, even though I had significantly downsized the file (from an "outbound" 72.2GB to an "inbound" file of slightly less than 7GB. So I repeated the round trip to P'shop, using the OSX Inspector to examine the relevant .approject size at three points in the workflow:
1) Before executing the "Open in External Editor" command;
2) After the PSD version had been created by Aperture; and
3) After re-sizing the file in P'Shop and saving it back to Aperture.
The net of the test was as follows:
1) The size of the base (pre-export) .approject increased by approximately 72.2GB when it created the 16-bit PSD file for export to P'shop - exactly what the metadata showed and what I expected for a 5D file at 16-bit color depth.
2) When the resized file was returned from P'shop, the base .approject file was now only 7.5GB larger, indicating the size of the returned file was in fact reduced by the downsizing.
So the problem is not creation of an abnormally large Aperture PSD file. The metadata file size is simply not updated when the downsized file is returned from P'shop.
I submitted a bug report to Apple on this, but I'm not sure what priority it will get. So this is an FYI in case others have observed a similar phenomenon and been concerned about it.
BTW: The file downsized via the P'Shop round trip was noticeably sharper on printing (from Aperture) than the print produced directly out of Aperture. So it appears the print output sharpening routines in Aperture still need considerable improvement. That's the improvement I'd rather have Apple spending their time on than an anoying but not fatal bug in file size metadata.

I was trying to imagine how you were managing taking more than a few photographs if your files were increasing the space take by 72GB a pop.
I was also imagining a camera the size of an aircraft carrier.

am i correct that this 'my photo stream' process is not removing any image data?
Yes,  as long as you have iPhoto's iCloud preference pane configures as follows:
You're be getting the full image file, pixel dimensions, etc. which is essentially a bit by bit copy of the photo on the Phone.
When you add tags and other metadata and export the file out of iPhoto as a jpeg with the checkboxes selected to include that metadata there will be some image compression.  However, if one chooses High or even Medium JPEG Quality one will be hard pressed to detect any image degradation unless printing very, large prints or otherwise displaying the image at a very, large size.
I ran a test on a 1.4 MB photo from my iPhone  and compared the original to two exports, one at High and the other at Medium JPEG Quality and got these results:

  • File Not Found bug with long audio file names?

    Hello -
Crazy problem. I'll probably post way too much information, but I want to make sure I cover everything. Help!
We run Logic Studio/Logic 8 on multiple 10.4.10/11 computers - G5 Power PC, new intel iMac, intel mini, G4 laptops. We are working on an audio post job using very messy OMFs that were prepared in Final Cut. We had problems opening them in Logic, so we opened the OMFs in Soundtrack Pro, exported to AAFs, and opened those in Logic.
The sessions look fine in Logic now (all files relinked), and the session is consolidated - ie, all files are local/in the project folder's Audio Files folder. I see this in the Audio Bin and can confirm in the finder.
Here's the problem. With the sessions closed:
    (A) I renamed the project folder by adding an asterix to the front of the folder name, and changed the color label of the folder in the finder in order to mark it as the original folder.
    (B) I made a copy of the whole folder (session files & audio files) in order to have something to work from and not mess up the original. When I opened up the session in the new folder, it immediately said audio file not found, do you want to search, locate, or skip. It couldn't find the file in a search, and obviously when you skip, then skip, then skip all, it opens the session with the data (regions are there but grayed) - so all the audio files are orphaned.
So when I try to locate the file, here's what happens. . . The audio file names are really horrendously long (must be some artifact of working in Final Cut). We're talking: "1087-001A SERG AIRPORT WAITING * 1-1channel_00044D02AA9- 363A-4CC5-A86B-0741023DB062.aif" - one bazillion characters.
So the audio file locate dialog box truncates the name of the file that's missing by using the first 20 characters or so, and then a "#" character, and then some random string of 3-6 characters that is not at all related to the file name. So who knows which of the 4-30 SERG AIRPORT files is supposed to go there!
Obviously if this were a 2 minute session file of 10 files or something, we could figure it out and relink everything, but we're talking about a feature-length session with a bazillion files.
    (C) Okay, so I tried to open the original session, in the folder that I had renamed by prefacing the original name with an * and changing the color of the folder. But I started to get the file not found errors. OH GEEZ. So I didn't save. I re-renamed the folder by taking out the * and changing the color label back. Then I tried to open the session again, but I still kept getting the file not found problem.
I have to stress that I didn't move any of the audio files, or change ANYTHING in the session.
So I thought - is all of this because I tried to open a new instance of the session, in a new instance of the folder? Is it because I renamed the folders? Normally you can rename folders, even session names, no problems, and Logic corrects the paths to the audio files!
    (D) So, crap. I reopened the original AAF file in logic and saved it in a new place. I closed the file, reopened it, closed, reopened, just to make sure everything was working! I checked the location of the files in the audio bin, and everything was great.
    (E) So now I copied the folders to an external hard drive to be able to work on another computer. But when I tried to open the sessions on a new computer. . . You guessed it, nada.
So. . . the questions are:
    (1) Those original sessions that now will not work - is there anything I can do to recover their functionality? We had work in there that I would prefer not to lose. . .
    (2) Is this a known bug having to do with the length of the Audio File names?
    (3) How do we get over this? My only idea so far is we could select all in a working logic session and say "Audio Tracks names to regions" or something and will that change the actual file names on teh computer? Then hopefully things would work on mulitple systems. . .
    Okay. HELP! Thanks!
    Polly

    OK I got it.
It is necessary to use prefix "file:///" before file name.
    Thanx everyway.

  • Lightroom 5 is auto-developing our canon 7d raw files but not the canon 5d mark 3 files upon import.

Lightroom 5 is auto-developing raw files upon import on the canon 7d but not on the canon 5d mark3. I would prefer to do individual file developing in the develop module.

Go into preferences, select the Presets tab. Hit "Reset all Default Develop Settings". You probably by accident set a default Develop for the 7D. Also check that you don't have a preset selected in the import dialog.

  • Aperture File Size

    Hello,
I've been archiving Aperture to a Time Capsule using Aperture's vault backup. I noticed that on the Time Capsule the file size it 67GB and the file size on my Mac is 57GB. Could some explain why the vault size is larger than the file size on my Mac?

No, I empty the trash before archiving. It is not a big deal now but will be as my library grows and backups take longer.

  • Gui bug, annoying but not anything more

I'm using SQL Developer version 1.1.2.25 on Windows XP connecting to Oracle 10.2.0.3 databases. Problem is that I'll sign into one database, patch a procedure and disconnect from the database including closing all of the worksheet windows first. I'll then log onto a second database to complete the same patch to the same procedure, but the gui is always asking me to re connect to the previous database(s). Why I can't figure out as I've already cleanly disconnected from them. Seems like a bug to me.

Is is a bug which has been reported already.

  • Annoying, but not major, WiFi problem

My issue isn't as serious as many others on this forum, but it is annoying me.
I have 3 wireless networks in the house (3 floors, lots of concrete - walls and floors - use Powerline networking and then an airport to create a network for each floor - works well and has done for a long time). My old, first generation, iPhone would automatically connect to the one with the strongest signal as I moved between floors. My new, iPhone 4, will not - it seems to stay on the network it was last on (I can see a very very weak signal from the other two networks when I am on a different floor - but so weak as to be unusable), and the iPhone4 seems to hold on to this signal for dear life.
Is there any way to tell it to automatically seek the strongest, rather than the last, WiFi network? I can obviously select the network manually, but this gets a bit annoying if I have to do it 10x each day.
    Thanks.
    Hendrix

    There is no such option.
This was probably changed to be intended as a benefit to some or to most, but what may be a benefit to some or to most may not be a benefit to all as in your situation.

  • Intermittent pauses in sound. Annoying, but not urgent.

My iPod is having some weird issues. It will play just fine for 20 or 30 minutes, then it will just stop in the middle of a song for about 5 seconds, then continue as if nothing happened. It's not the headphones, or the jack. Anyone have anything like this happen?

My iPod does the same thing, but only when connected to a power source via the dock connector. My iPod also repeatedly stops and starts, stuttering in and out of play. It's extremely annoying as I want to listen to it in the car via my stereo! The in-car dock I've bought causes this intermittent playback all the time as did the previous charger device that I used. I've raised this in a thread a few days ago but no-one's replied to my knowledge. It seems there are quite a few threads on here with similar freezing issues and people seem to be suspecting to do with v1.2.1 of software for the iPod to be the cause.
I'd be grateful if anyone can offer any help. I contacted Apple UK Support and they've advised me to seek a refund on the unit! It's going back to amazon soon (along with the in-car dock!) if I can't get this fixed!

  • My desk top shortcuts to favorite web sites only open in a blank page. I have to then reload in a new tab from the toolbar or a bookmark. It is annoying but not critical.

I have shortcuts on my desktop for yahoo mail and a few other sites. I used to be able to go directly to them. Now it opens in a blank page and I have to load the site in a new tab from the toolbar shortcuts or a bookmark. Also my saved passwords no longer exist. It all happened after a firefox upgrade to my yahoo tool bar.

  • Front Row plays audio but not video of MP4 H264 AAC files

    SL 10.6.6
    Here's the problem:
Take an MP4 movie file encoded with H264 and AAC thats plays with no problems in QT, iTunes, Front Row
Open this file in QT7Pro, add a mask using a GIF file then export as MP4 using video and audio pass through to avoid re-encoding
The new video file plays OK in QT and iTunes but only plays the audio track in Front Row - the video is just presented as a blank screen
This happens to every file i've tried it with.
I've tried trashing all front row caches/prefs/app support folders, installing/uninstalling/re-installing perian. i've tried changing the file extension to .mov .m4v .3gp - still the same problem the file plays perfectly except in Front Row
All the posts I can find on this topic seem to refer to subtitles causing a problem - these files have no subtitle track
    Any suggestions?

I have faced the same problem exactly. Some seasons and one movie I have detected so far, do not show any video at all. If I open the same files in iTunes, they show ok. If I open the same files in QuickTime thought no video also. I guess it has something to do with QuickTime then. Try it yourselves in order to see if it is the same problms with you guys. If that is the case I will try to extract an older version of QuickTime from the installation package via Pacifist and see if that works.
Even if it doesn't work I am pretty sure they will come up with a new update fixing this, but the point is that Apple isn't used in making bugged updates, up until recent. What is wrong with them lately?
Anyway, as soon as I have news in the afternoon I will let you know

Old computer HDD named Bob, new one named Betty.  Trying to transfer crucial files via ethernet. Have connection, can see Bob's public folder on Betty. When try to move or open anything there, tells me I do not have permission to either view or read respectively. I changed permission on the item to read/write for Betty.  Made Betty an admin on Bob etc. What can I do?

After importing raw files into Aperture, then importing into Photoshop, the option to 'save as jpg' is no longer available. Why? Or better yet, what do I need to do to be able to resume saving my psd files as jpgs?

First, convert your PSD files to 8 bit mode. Then you will be able to save as JPG.

For the second problem being that the catalog is open in another application, go to the folder containing your catalog. You will find a file with the .lock extension. This is a file created by the catalog, and is automatically deleted when the catalog closes normally. Sometimes it can get left behind. You need to delete that file.
When Lightroom says that the file cannot be read, it usually means that it cannot be written to the chosen destination. This tends to be a permissions problem in your operating system. Check to make sure you have write permission for the folder you are trying to import your images to.
