Another NVidia graphics problem (8800 GS) - late spring 08 imac

I have a spring 08 aluminum imac (24", 3.06GHz, 4GB RAM, 10.5.7)
The graphics card is an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS w/ 512 MB VRAM
I get sporadic strange graphics failures seemingly at random intervals. They started around the time I upgraded to 10.5.5 (or maybe 10.4.4... can't recall) back in December, but that could be coincidence. They do not seem to be tied to use of any application or user action. Since they started in December, I have gone months without them, and had them occur 5 minutes apart. They've hit me a half dozen times in the last 3 days.
Here's what happens:
The screen appears to flash once
The computer becomes unresponsive (usually w/ spinning beachball)
If activity monitor is running, the CPU stays at a low use %
Sometimes the dock icons pixelate and/or turn yellow
Occasionally the desktop icons seem corrupt/pixelated
The desktop background is unaffected. If iTunes is playing it is unaffected. The mouse moves the pointer with no sluggishness or lag, though clicking is usually ineffective (can have either standard pointer or spinning ball)
Using iStat, the GPU immediately after a reboot is ~52 deg and the GPU Diode is 59 Deg. The top of the machine is very warm. I can hold my hand there indefinitely, but any hotter and I would not be able to. The CPU fan is running at 1300rpm, hard drive at 1500, optical drive at 700.
Tech tool Pro 5 video memory test shows no problems.
Sometimes the machine appears to recover somewhat, but then I get another "flash" and the symptoms repeat.
If I pull up console, I get a host of error messages along the lines of:
7/14/09 8:41:18 PM kernel NVDA(OpenGL): Channel exception! status = 0xffff info32 = 0xd = GR: SW Notify Error
7/14/09 8:41:18 PM kernel 0000000c
7/14/09 8:41:18 PM kernel 00200000 00008297 00000472 00000000
7/14/09 8:41:18 PM kernel 0000047e 00001b0c 1000f010 00000003
7/14/09 8:41:18 PM kernel 00000000 00000000 00000000
7/14/09 8:41:30 PM kernel NVChannel(Display): Graphics channel timeout!
7/14/09 8:41:42 PM kernel NVChannel(OpenGL): Graphics channel timeout!
7/14/09 8:41:54 PM kernel NVChannel(Display): Graphics channel timeout!
Typically, the only recourse is a hard reboot holding the power button.
I fear I screwed myself, as even though the problem started in December, it had gone "dormant" in early spring, and I let my 1 year warranty go past without getting extended applecare. A call to apple care yielded only a "bring it to a genius bar and they'll have a look" but given the sporadic nature of the problem, I doubt I'd be "lucky" enough to get the error.
Can anyone offer advice as to:
What the heck is going on
Whether this is a common enough problem that I can badger Apple into fixing it out of warranty
If there is anything I can do to remedy the problem myself
What I can expect to pay for a repair

Typo - should read : "They started around the time I upgraded to 10.5.5 (or maybe 10.5.4... can't recall)"

  • Nvidia graphics problems

    Hi all!
New problem has cropped up with our dual-core intel based iMac. ALL graphics, no matter if it is a screensaver, or the icons on the dock, appear to be 'rendered' by photoshop. This happened without photoshop open, and it runs through all aspects of the display, from DVD video to the icons. I have run the hardware disk Utility, and it fund no problems, so maybe the screen is just giving up the ghost. Sad, because I convinced my wife to switch to Mac, and we are having an early big problem with a 3 month old computer.
    Thanks for the help!

have you connected power cables to the VGA?
do >>Clear CMOS Guide<< with power cord removed.
also make 1st VGA the add-on one, if there is a such option
yes it is connected and in this bios version there is not an option for this
i was looking for a bios update but when i go to msi there is non even with liveupdate 5
but i can also see that it doesn't read the mainboard type correctly so live update is not the rigt solution for this

  • USB Problems with my late 2013 iMac

3.2GHz Intel Core i5 27" iMac (only upgrade being a 1TB fusion drive)
When I first received the computer I plugged it into my old USB 2.0 hub with all of my other peripherals plugged into that.  Initially it worked but after a few minutes, everything became unresponsive (including my bluetooth mouse and USB keyboard which was plugged into the hub).  I began to troubleshoot and ultimately determined the old hub was the culprit.  My logic concluded that maybe the old hub just wasn't compatible with USB 3.0 on the new iMac (because it certainly worked with my previous Macbook Pro.
So I ordered the highest rated USB 3.0 hub I could find: http://amzn.com/B00AYQ433U
    ...apparently same problem.
So what's the deal?  Why is it that when I plug any sort of hub into my iMac, the entire system freezes and goes unresponsive after a few minutes?  This just doesn't seem right.
Side note:  I have a Griffin iMic that I use for my headset that I've also experienced considerable connection issues with.  This worked for 4 years straight on my old MBP.  What is up with my USB ports?

  • Apple pulls NVIDIA graphics update, reasons unclear

    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/01/29/applepulls_nvidia_graphics_update_reasonsunclear.html
From now on - I'm waiting a week before installing anything...

I'm not so lucky: this morning I experienced something really weird: I went to my computer, pressed the shift key to awaken the display, and everything on the display was both unsharp and moving back and forth! Then the display basically blanked out, and my computer became unresponsive. I had to force a reboot. Upon reboot, everything was fine, but I've never seen a problem like this before. I did install Monday's nVidia graphics update that was later pulled.
Is there an easy way to go back?

If you want to sync it to the iPad from that Mac, you need to upgrade it to at least 10.5.8.
If you want to copy the music to another Mac, you don't. Move the iTunes folder of the item in the Finder's sidebar over as you would any other folder. If you put it somewhere other than the Music folder, launch iTunes with the Option key held down and point it to that location.

  • HP Envy 15 Graphics Problem with Windows 8.1 (Intel and NVidia Graphics). Help!

I bought an HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j013ea about 6 months ago and I have had a major problem with the graphics that I cannot seem to solve. I think it started when I updated to Windows 8.1, even though I am not 100% certain.
I have noticed the following three problems, and I think they are related:
Some windows (such as Chrome, Skype, or even Device Manager or other windows) are very blurry compared to others.
The firefox menu window has some deformed black arrows instead of the normal ones.
When playing a game (specifically, Star Wars the Force Unleashed 2), after a while I get an error that the computer has ran out of memory. However, according to task manager, only about 50% is in use, not to mention that I have 8 GB of RAM + 2 GB graphics memory. At the same time, the computer gets rather loud (like a fan working overtime) and hot.
The laptop has both Intel and NVidia graphics, and both are enabled in Device Manager. To be honest, I have no idea which is used when, or how to check that (let me know if there is a way)
I have tried the following without success:
Uninstalling the Intel graphics driver from device manager and installing a version I downloaded from the HP website for my laptop and OS. After that, Windows would NOT BOOT, and I had to do a system restore.
Uninstalling the Intel graphics from Programs and Features, and installing 2 different versions from the Intel website. Nothing changed.
Updating Nvidia driver through GeForce Experience. Nothing changed.
Updating Intel drivers from Windows Update. Nothing changed.
Quite frankly I am not sure what the problem could be, since the graphics versions are supposed to be compatible with WIndows 8.1. I also don't get why some windows are blurry and others are not. I am thinking the computer uses only the Intel graphics and not the Nvidia (at least in the blurry windows), but even if that was the case (and it shouldn't be), I don't think I should be having this problem.
At this point, I really need help. My graphics details are:
Intel HD Graphics 4600: Driver version: 10.18.10.3412
NVidia GeForce GT 740M: Driver version: 335.23
    NVidia GeForce Experience version: 1.8.2
I am attaching screenshots that show driver details and the problems.
    Thank you.
    Blurry Chrome:
    Firefox menu problem:
Device Manager and driver windows are also blurry, both graphics are shown

I had a similar problem with a Dell laptop.  I found the problem was the laptop wanted to switch between the Intel and NYIDIA video cards.  It would switch to the Intel when high graphics was not required then to the NIVIDIA when high graphics was required.  The laptop does this to save power when high graphics is not required but it caused problems with some applications, specifically high graphics games.
For me the solution was to disable the Intel graphics processor.  You can do this by right clicking on your Wallpaper, select the NIVIDIA Control Panel, then select Set Physx Configuration.  You will see a dropdown box labeled Select Physx Processor.  It is set to Auto by default.  This allows the switching I described. Select this dropdown box and select your NIVIDIA processor.  This will prevent the laptop from switching and force it to use your NVIDIA processor exclusively.
    Hope this helps.

  • How to update graphics card drivers for late 2008 macbook pro with Nvidia 9600m GT?

Can anybody help me update the drivers for my 9600m GT graphics card for my Late 2008 Macbook pro? I am running OS X Lion 10.7.5 with a Windows 7 partition. I have tried finding support on Nvidia's website, but at least for the 9600m GT, it isn't supported for my operating system. Would I have to update it from my Windows side? And if so, would the update apply to my OS X side as well? I have a little computer knowledge, but nothing indepth.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
In OS X, Apple provides the GPU drivers and you cannot update them from NVIDIA. They are updated with each OS X update, so you are running the most recent drivers for your OS X version. OS X Mountain Lion and Mavericks have got more recent GPU drivers, but it's not worth upgrading unless you need newer drivers for an app (I highly doubt this).
However, you can update the GPU drivers in Windows, and you should do it to get the best performance. You can download them from the NVIDIA site > http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us Note that drivers are only applied in the operating system you are installing them, so they will not be installed in OS X

  • [SOLVED] Graphics problem in laptop with dual NVIDIA cards

I'm trying to install Arch on an Lenovo IdeaPad Y510. The laptop have 2 NVIDIA GT755M.
The second graphics card is removable. If I remove that card I can see with lspci that there also is a intel graphics chip. If the second card is mounted lspci only shows me one GT 755m.
The problem is that I cannot start X. I have installed gdm and gnome and when booted normally the screen goes blank and the cpu-fan speeds up and after a while the computer reboots.

I've given up on the nvidia-drivers and try with nouveau-driver. Still no success.
Screen is black at bootup. I can, however, login and type reboot and the computer reboots (although I cant see anything).
If I add nomodeset to bootline I can see the login-prompt and login, if I then run startx I get the following in /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
    [drm] KMS not enabled
This link https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/ke … de_setting  does not help very much, I've tried the "Early KMS start" thing but I still have the same problem.
If I have gdm enabled with
    systemctl enable gdm.service
and boot the computer the screen is blank. If I login with ssh I can see that gdm is started.
Journalctl -b -0 from the ssh-session gives this:
    [bjorn@arch ~]$ journalctl -b -0

  • Xorg Problem - Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!

    Hello.
I've encountered a problem while installing my Xorg server, which I'd like to use with KDE.
Here's the track of my xorg installation:
    # sudo pacman -Syu
    # sudo pacman -S xorg
(my graphic card is vVidia GeForce 8600 GT)
    # sudo pacman -S nvidia-96xx nvidia-96xx-utils
    # sudo nvidia-xconfig
(that's where I wanted to check if I did everything right)
    #sudo startx
Xorg started loading and after a few secs it printed such output:
NVIDIA: could not open the devie file /dev/nvidia0 (Input/output error).
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device PCI:4:0:0.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Please see the COMMON PROBLEMS section in the README for additional information.
(EE) NVIDIA(0): Failed to initialize the NVIDIA graphics device!
    (EE) NVIDIA(0): *** Aborting ***
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usabe configuration.
    Fatal server error:
    no screens found
    giving up.
xinit: Connection refused (errno 111): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno3): Server error.
    What should I do?

    1. wrong driver. the 96xx driver is for horrible old hardware, like the gf4. Install 'nvidia' and 'nvidia-utils' instead.
    2. don't use nvidia-xconfig, it's not needed.
    3. reboot after installing the driver if you havn't disabled kms already.

  • Yet Another NVIDIA Problem(TM)

Since I updated XFree86 a week or so ago, it just keeps failing to initialise the NVIDIA module. I tried X.Org, which does exactly the same. Looking at the log, everything seems to start up properly with no errors, but suddenly it decides to give up, no reason given.
I have just discovered that if I uninstall, reinstall and modprobe the the NVIDIA drivers, it works! Until I reboot. Then, no matter what I try, it will not work at all! So I have to uninstall, reinstall and modprobe each time I reboot.
Very weird is all I can say.

Well, I had done that, but the point was that once I restarted, whether the nvidia modules was loaded by /etc/rc.sysinit or manually with modprobe, it would not work (but modprobe did not report any errors). The /dev/nvidia* devices do not show up.
Seems the problem is with UDev (maybe I needed to configure something for it?). I have switched back to DevFS for now, and it works again (X.Org). I had forgotten when I posted that I had also switched to UDev at the same time...
I still have another slightly related problem. I recently (yesterday) had this idea that maybe I should try get my (hardly ever used) Lucent winmodem working under Linux for the odd times I use dial-up. Drivers were easy to find (http://linmodems.org/). This worked under UDev, but then stopped working when I restarted (grr), the same as NVIDIA, whether they were in MODULES or whether I modprobe'd 'em. I actually got KPPP to dial on /dev/modem and it would have authorised had I bothered to configure PPP daemon first ;-) Didn't work under DevFS either, even though the install script had added a rule in /etc/modprobe.conf to alias /dev/modem which doesn't materialse. The device does appear at /dev/tts/LTM0 but KPPP can't dial on it.

  • Graphics problem mac book pro late 2011 model

I have a mac book pro late 2011 model.my screen gets grey after the apple logo pops up and freezes and it becomes extremly hot.as my mac was out of warranty i gave it for repair but it didnt resolve as it was a graphics problem.later on i came to know that a lot of mac book pro late 2011 model users have the same problem.will apple change the logic board for me as its just two years old and i paid around  Rs.120000 for that mac and now i am not able to use it.i saw the logic bard price and its like Rs.45000 which is like too expensive.i dont know what to do? i came across a forum saying apple will replace the logic board for free if its graphics related issues for mac book pro late 2010 model if its within 3 years from the date of purchase. here is the link .
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4088?viewlocale=en_US
I am a student and it took much time and money to buy that mac.please let me know if someone can help me replacing the logic board.its just two years old and as new as i bought. pls help

You're having the problems as discussed in this -> https://discussions.apple.com/thread/4766577?tstart=0 - thread. There is no scheme to replace the logic boards as there was for the 15" mid-2010 model. Depending on where you are and what consumer rights you may have under the laws of your country, Apple will likely want to replace the logic board (at a substantial cost). The best 'fix' for the problem at this time is to have the GPU BGA reballed back onto the logic board.
Take a look at the thread and see if you've the same problems - it only affects 15" and 17" 2011 models, not the 13" model. If you've the 13" model, you have a different problem.
    Good luck,
