Another system migration problem...

I had posted this as a reply in a thread about problems with using Migration Assistant with a bootable external FireWire drive, but it wasn't getting any replies, so please forgive the double-post... I need to find an answer to these problems before I go nuts. The situation:
PBG4 w/broken screen, running an external (duh) Samsung monitor. This is my shop PB, it's currently masquerading as an immobile desktop.
Identical PBG4 with no problems. Mostly keep at home, but also on the road.
BOTH PBs have the same dual (Airport/Comcast cable modem for home, Ethernet/SBC DSL for the shop) network settings, user settings, etc., and BOTH receive mail from my Comcast AND SBC accounts.
LaCie 320GB external Firewire drive with OS X 10.4.9 installed.
I wanted a way to keep my work and home PBs synced -- especially Mail -- without dragging the home PBG4 back and forth. Yes, I KNOW it's a portable, but as I sometimes ride my bike to work, I'd rather risk the loss of a $240.00 FireWire drive than an I-don't-know-how-much PB -- plus, the FireWire drive is a much smaller package to carry.
I used Migration Assistant to copy the "home" PB's "Users, Applications, Network and Machine Settings, Files, and Volumes" (just like the Migration Assistant Intro says) to the FireWire drive (which already had OS X 10.4.9 installed), then selected the FireWire drive in System Preferences as the Startup Disk.
The FireWire drive booted up both the shop AND home PBs just fine, but I had the following problems:
1. The network and machine settings I had transferred from my "home" PB to the FireWire drive didn't "take" when I used the FireWire drive to boot up the shop PB. Neither my home Airport/Comcast cable nor shop Ethernet/SBC DSL settings were available as choices in the Network Preferences Pane. To use my shop (SBC DSL) connection while running off the System on the FireWire drive, I had to manually reconfigure the settings, always a RPITA.
2. I decided -- probably foolishly -- to try it the other way 'round: I booted up from the shop PB's internal HD, and used Migration Assistant to transfer the "shop" PBs settings, etc. to the FireWire drive. Are you dizzy yet? I must have been, because -- just as an experiment -- I tried booting the "home" PB from the FireWire drive. Once again, the PB booted up just fine; but once again, neither the home nor shop network settings were available as choices. As an added joy, I ended up with a ton of duplicate files and folders on the FireWire drive, labeled "(from old Mac)" including my ENTIRE 25+GB iTunes library. Thank God it was 320Gig!
3. I think that one of the problems MIGHT be this -- PLEASE correct me if I'm wrong:
When using Migration Assistant DURING a System install, IIRC there's no install-process or Migration-process question about the heinous "Short Name" (the existence/importance of which I was totally unaware, though I've been installing Mac operating systems since 1989). Using Migration Assistant OUTSIDE of the System install process allows you -- if I'm correct here -- to royally screw things up IF you've already used a "Short Name" during the install process on the Mac that you now want to Migrate TO that is different from the "Short Name" of the Mac you're Migrating FROM. I hope somebody else understands that last sentence, because I know it's logically and grammatically convoluted.
To me, the importance of the "Short Name" should be emphasized somewhere, either in the System install process, or in using Migration Assistant AFTER a System install is complete,or -- preferably -- BOTH. I had NO idea how important the "Short Name" is to the System, and while I'm not the sharpest crayon in the box, I'm probably not the dullest either.
Anyway, I'd really like to keep the two PBs synced as regards mail and new or updated files (and settings), but I seem to have over-thought (or UNDER-thought!) the means of doing so.
What am I doing wrong here, and what's the BEST way to keep my two PBs (AND the FireWire drive) all singing the same tune, especially as regards mail, settings, and docs?

Simple answer: Migration Assistant is not a backup nor a synchronization tool and should not be used for that purpose.
Instead use backup software:
Get an external Firewire drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. You can also make and maintain clones with good backup software. My personal recommendations are (order is not significant):
1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial - not yet universal binary)
2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
5. PsynchX 2.1.1 and RsyncX 2.1 (Freeware)
6. Carbon Copy Cloner (Freeware - 3.0 is a Universal Binary)
7. SuperDuper! (Commercial)
The following utilities can also be used for backup, but cannot create bootable clones:
1. Backup (requires a .Mac account with Apple both to get the software and to use it.)
2. Toast
3. Impression
4. arRSync
Apple's Backup is a full backup tool capable of also backing up across multiple media such as CD/DVD. However, it cannot create bootable backups. It is primarily an "archiving" utility as are the other two.
Impression and Toast are disk image based backups, only. Particularly useful if you need to backup to CD/DVD across multiple media.

    Well I tried to run it again and came up with the same message...I see that some people got great support to help them so I am hoping someone can help me as well. I know "b nor" is very qualfied and hopefully can help me! Please advise what I can do. Thank you

    I found a log file on my Mac that was marked SystemMigration.log, which seemed to indicate that a system migration had been carried out. I understand that the system migration tool is used to transfer information between Macs, but I only have one machine and to my certain knowledge I have never carried out a system migration. My Mac has been hacked in the past and I'm suspicious that someone might be using it remotely. Is this possible and if so what can I do about it?

    I've followed uncountable suggestions about this issue, but none seem to be quite the same situation, and none of the suggestions I tried made any difference so far.
    History: MBP 17" June/2009, 8GB RAM, 500GB Seagate with sudden movement protection, started life as 10.5.7, done at least three fresh reinstalls of SL. The problem was present on the second SL install (the one I really used in production for about a year), but I solved it somehow by following uncountable Google suggestions at the time. Didn't take not of the magic one, because the problem wasn't so predictable at the time, or I didn't know enough about it, and also because I only noticed the problem was gone after a couple of weeks of normal use. Unfortunately, some time ago my filesystem went nuts on a kernel panic and, though I was able to move things back in place from lost+found, a few things wouldn't work as they should, so I went for another fresh reinstall. After I started to use the new system the problem showed up again, but I haven't being able to find a fix for it again. Current system (10.6.4) and patches regularly updated, though I tend to delay a reboot to avoid putting together all my usual windows/applications in the correct desktop/spaces. Maybe the only continuously running extension I have is Growl, since I tend to more heavily use the Unix part of the Mac through MacPorts (latex, tcpdump, nmap, bash scripts, emacs and so on). Recently I installed M$ Office, but normally I prefer OpenOffice (does M$ Office install some sort of extension?)
    Frequency: I'm almost sure it is triggered by something related to energy saving regarding turning off the screen, but it doesn't happen every time. When I'm giving a class, the machine runs on battery, the settings for screen off are shorter and if I take too long to generate some input (key press or touchpad action), the problem tends to happen. Interestingly, it's particularly more frequent when I'm giving classes:-):-), but it is happening even on my desk with power on. I'm inclined to think there's a "window of opportunity" for the bug to happen, maybe between screen dim and screen off (a few minutes?). My settings are currently at 15 minutes for the screen to go off, for both power adaptor and battery operation, but that's an attempt to lower the chances of this happening during class, which is terrible. They used to be at only a few minutes of inactivity.
    Symptoms: if I try to do anything with the machine past some period of inactivity, maybe during that window I mentioned above, there's a high chance of the bug being triggered. The system responds quickly to clicking a window, but applications don't seem to receive the focus of attention; I notice that the window frame of an application doesn't get darker when I try to select it. On a Terminal, the prompt remains as a rectangular frame instead of a filled block (I use white characters on dark background), and no matter how much I try, I cannot give the focus of attention to the visible shell on Terminal, so I can't issue any shell command to try and find out things. Changing workspaces may happen, but at a very slow speed, maybe many seconds after issueing the command. Eventually the system recovers itself, usually after several minutes, and then all user interface events that I tried during the freeze were remembered and are played sequently as fast as the machine can handle, sometimes doing unwanted things in the process due to objects receiving the wrong action (some sort of desynchronization). The outstanding event that preceeds recovering is the screen being progressively blackened and then lit again, but not instantly as in moving the pointer to a hot corner. The screen transition happens during half to a full second, after which all queued events are played at the fastest possible speed. After that the system is completely normal. In the beginning I have hard-rebooted the machine, because I didn't know it would eventually recover itself. During class I also don't have the patience to wait for long (and neither do students:-)).
    Solutions already tried:
    - disabling sms through pmset. I know it has to be disabled with this particular drive, otherwise conflicts with the drive's own mechanism. It is currently off, and had been on for a while till I refound the suggestion through google.
    - re-indexing Spotlight's DB. No change.
    - fixing file permissions (I don't see any possible relation, but anyway...)
    Don't recall what else is missing on this list, because I couldn't find a concrete suggestion for this scenario, so I believe that's about it.
    It looks to be more frequent now, to the point that I decided to stop work just to write this long msg, in the hope that someone else may have seen such behaviour and have something new for me to try.

    The problem is that the initial backup is incredibly slow and hasn't worked yet. I right click on the dock icon and start the backup process which after working out what needs to be copied progress's in very slow erratic bursts.
    It's hard to offer a definite solution. But there are some simple things you could try to improve the backup speed such as excluding TM backup disk from spotlight indexing (privacy tab in spotlight prefs), and excluding unecessary files and folder from the backup (e.g. applications) in TM prefs.

    One of my client (User) wants to transfer his file from  SAP R/3 System SAP XI system. He is using a customize t-code ZFIR0325 (Trial balance report transfer to Hyperian System). When user execute the  program he is getting error "File Transfer Failed due to Network chk with Admin"
    I checked with Network team but they said it is okay from their side. We also check for authorization but there is no issue regarding authorization.
    Name of File Path of Aplication Server, XI destinaion and XI directory entered by user is correct.
    We also put authorization trace in XI System to RFC User (In file transfer from one system to another system this RFC User is geeing Used) but no authorization issue was found.
    Please help me to resolve this problem. I any detail require I will provide the same.

    Firstly, no one in the community can answer on how a custom transcation code and a program associated with it behaves.
    If there are no authorization issues in the system, you have to look at the exact error message. Look if your XI system is allowed to receive files from the SAP system.
    Unfortunately, you should do some more home work before putting your question here. If everything is fine and configured correctly, then the issue might be with the program.

    I am having a Webdynpro Java DC, i want to give that DC to another person to import into his system and work.  i am doing a export of that DC and creating a zip file.  But when we are trying to import it in another system, it is giving errors.  When trying to build, its not showing DC options at all,  DC-> buid or deploy options are not visible, when right clicked over the DC.
    Am i doing it in a wrong way.  Can anybody help me.

    Are you working with local DC?
    Then you can take ur dc in the following way..
    Find where the dcs are stored in ur system..
    <Some File Path> .dtc\LocalDevelopment\DCs\<your dc package>\
    There will be a folder with your project name.
    Copy that folder and Paste in the other system under the same folder structure.
    ie., the copied folder need to be pasted here
    <Some path> .dtc\LocalDevelopment\DCs\<your dc package>\
    Once you copied,Open your NWDS and go to DC perspective.In the Local DCs.
    Go to Local Development -- > My Component
    Right Click on 'My Component' and click on 'Refresh'.
    Your new project will appear under the 'My Component' hierarchy.
    Right Click on your project and Choose 'Create Project'.
    Now Proper dc will be available for you to work on.

  • Filenet Archive to SAP Migration - Problem with DMS_KPRO_CONVERT2

    We seem to be having an issue with a Filenet RFC to SAP Content Server migration.
    We run the report DMS_KPRO_CONVERT and eveything seems to run fine.
    When we run DMS_KPRO_CONVERT2 to move the files, we seem to pick up an error:
    File /saparchive/DV2/username (where username is my username) cannot be opened
    In looking at what is happening, it seems to save the file to the filenet archive exchange directory as the username (with no file extension) however it seems that the system has problems accessing this directly to check the file in to the new repository again and fails.
    If I manually check out the file and check it into the sap content server, there is no problem so it doesn't seem to be an issue that either the SAP content server or the filenet server is not accessible.
    Any ideas what the issue could be?

    am very new to BW. I am having problems to extract LIS info to BW.
    read all the mails in SDN on LIS extraction.
    IN txn MC24 when i am trying to update my info structure i am getting the message

    in log i saw it asks me
    "The info structure S998 has the development class $TMP and therefore cannot be transported. For this reason updating definitions for info structure S998 cannot be transported to another systems.
    Procedure
    It is possible to transport the update rules to another client in the same system.
    If you still want to transfer the info structure, call up the function transport features in the info structure maintenance (transaction MC22) and change the development class.
    when i went to MC22  and went to "Create object directory entry"...
    i see package as $tmp so had selected local object...was the above problem due to it...
    If i have to create another package then what do i have to do and what transport layer should i put"

    In the past two weeks I did a bit of research but not to much avail. I noticed I had the "Locale Switcher" add on installed, and deactivated it. Switching languages in the "Languages" tab of "Add-ons" still did not work (yes, I restarted every time). I installed the "'''Quick Locale Switcher''' 1.7.4" extension (yes, I restarted), and it displays a number of locales in the "Tools" menu; still choosing one has no effect (yes, I restarted).
    Then I juggled with Quick Locale Switchers "options", which actually displayed in Esperanto (so I cannot tell you what they say in English). I check the first one (saying more or less that locale switching should affect the user interface) and switched to German (yes, I restarted) -- and '''it worked'''! I switched to Esperanto -- and Firefox went to ... English!
    After a lot of searching in the Web I found on "[https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/esperanto-language-pack/ https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/esperanto-language-pack/]" that this pack is "'''Not available for Firefox 3.6.16'''". That might explain something (not everything); probably I lost my language when I upgraded from 3.5 to 3.6.

  • Clipboard issue- Automatically copying content past into another system across the network.

    I am facing issue related clipboard in all windows platform in our organization. Say example: Person A copying something from any application or browser in his system and when he is going to past into another apps(word file or text file) in the same system,
    its pasting some other text content, which is copied in another system, which is using by person B. Again Person B when is going to copy and paste something in his system, pasting content is from person C's system. It is happening in all system in our organization.
    It is very terrific problem, which is seen first time in my life. It is happening intermittently in all system.
    Our organization is mainly R&D and software development company, Developers using windows clipboard in local system, but not
    in another system thru n etwork or LAN. I have installed updated windows patch, Forefront antivirus in all system and also run scan. Not found any virus. We are continuously trying to identify the issue. Yet we did not get any solution. 
    We are enterprise customer of Microsoft and we using many enterprise solution of Microsoft. I hope any one can help me on the same.

    This is weird. Please disconnect the network from these computer to check if they work fine.
    This is also might be caused by some third-party software conflict. In such situation, I would suggest you perform a clean boot in Windows clients to rule out the cause of third party programs.

  • Assign User Task According to Hierarchy From Another System

    Hi all.
    I am new in Oracle BPM, I'm doing a  project where I have to perform a relatively simple approval workflow.
    My problem, is actually in associating people who should make approvals to set up reports.
    My BPM project is integrated with LDAP (AD - Active Directory), but the staff hierarchy is on another system.
    As I am very new in technology do not know the tools to implement the integration with other hierarchies system, I know it is possible to perform an integration via REST (which is what I need).
    I would like an opnion on how I can make this integration.
    An example of what I need:
         John - Operator of human resources    
         Mark - Manager of the Human Resources
    John will open admission report of a new Official, at the time that he send the request for approval, I will need to access this other system to know you're above it, in this case would MARK and send the Report for MARK.
    Could someone give me a help how to do this? Some steps or tips on how to find or which component used within the JDeveloper.

    It's far better than any documentation I've ever seen on the subject.  He goes through how to do External Routing for human tasks step-by-step.  This would let you call your external system to determine the participant to assign the instance to.

    There is a class in one of the systems that my company has, and now we would like to move it to another system line by line. However, the problem is that the class has like 13 long methods and I really don't want to physically copy and paste every single attributes, parameters, exceptions and codes one by one in SE24. Is there a more convinient way of doing that? Thanks a lot!

      If there is any transport from source and target systems...Try transporting the CR which has the class and the methods..
      Otherwise...You have to do manually..

  • Transfer documents to another system including their attachments

    Hello,
    I have to transfer documents/attachments (from archive and SO) to another system. Therefor I have to export the documents/attachments to the application server (unix) and import them in the target system.
    My problem: I found function modules and methods to import documents and attachments (e.g. cl_gos_document_service->create_attachment, so_documents_manager, archivobject_create_file,...), but nothing to export them to the application server (not to the presentation server, because of mass processing as job in background).
    Can anyone give me an example for each of the document types (archive and SO) to export and to import them including their attachments?

    Use RECOVERY MODE.
    Boot from another drive with a copy of OS X too is always good.
    A Safe Boot at a minimum.

    Only hostname/ipaddress and SID name will be changed for solution manager. So for solution manager back RFC in ECC and EP systems you need to change hostname/ipaddress and instance number.
    From SMSY try to update/read ECC and EP systems data. Check it is working fine or not.
