Another TIME WARNER Internet problem. Help!

TWC Modem > Macbook #1 = OK
TWC Modem > Time Capsule = No signal
TWC Modem > PC = No signal
TWC Modem > Macbook #2 = No signal
This is weird. It only works when hardwired to one of my Macbooks. I assume that this problem is with a MAC adress, but I dont know what I am doing. Any help?

What it the make/model of the TWC-provided modem?
In your network configuration description, are each of the devices connected to the modem by Ethernet and simultaneously? Does your ISP require that you register the MAC address of the device in order to be provided Internet service? That is do they require that you upgrade to a "home network" service in order to have more than one computer gain Internet access?

  • Ubee, airport, time-warner internet

Hi I am in New York City, using Time Warner cable internet.
I just upgraded my service and they hooked me up with a Ubee modem/router, which doesn't seem to "see" my Airport router.
Internet is fine when I connect with ethernet straight to computer, so not a cord issue.
I don't know how to turn the router function off on the Ubee modem.
    Any thoughts?

    Thank you Xantiaan,
Yes, I did have the wifi off when I did the test. Although your second suggestion wasn't the answer, it did lead me to the answer.
I logged in to the website for the DSL Modem using information that came with the Modem box. In my case it was going to, "fritz.box". That's where I first updated the Modem firmware. Secondly, I created a "free port" for the Airport Time Capsule in the Internet options for the Modem. I think Apple was a little overzealous with their instructions for setting up the Airport Time Capsule (ATC)--it wasn't as easy as they say. Anyway, opening up a free port allows a more advanced device such as the ATC to function verses a simple ethernet connection to a laptop. My wifi internet speed through the ATC network suddenly went from 30 kBit/s to 3,000 kbit/s.
I then followed the provided instructions to add the printer through the Airport Utility but that didn't work either. So I searched a forum that said to simply add the printer again in the System Preferences: Printer/Scanner Section. That worked.
So for those of you having troubles with your Airport Time Capsule Internet connection, try getting to your Modem Settings and opening a port as is normally done for a server (i think), only this time it's for the ATC. I'm no computer guy but this seemed to have worked. If anyone sees some kind of security concern here, let me know. Thanks and good luck.
    -J
P.S. For my settings on the "free port," I used "HTTP-Server" and "TCP".

  • Mid 2011 mbp i7 with a SSD has problems, including grey screen/blue screen/beeping/freezing when I stream live video (i.e. watch espn or time warner cable) Help? Ideas?

Recently my Macbook Pro (June 2011, i7, 8gb RAM, 512gb SSD, AMD Radeon 6750, Mountain Lion - since July - currently 10.8.2) has been presenting me with an array of problems, usually initiated when I am streaming live video. I was streaming Time Warner Cable on 12/9 and it gave me what looked like the blue screen of death.  It started up after about five attempts that time. The other day, after about a week of not using the computer, it wouldn't boot past the grey screen. I (option) started it and it gave me two boot choices, the regular HD and a "10.8 restore" option.  The HD gave me the grey screen and the restore option gave me the dark blue screen. I reset PRAM and that didn't work.  After a force (x) start it worked.  Today, I was using "Watch ESPN" and the screen froze and the computer did some kind of repeating RAM beep or something.  I rebooted and it started up fine.  I'm not watching any videos anymore, but this is a problem since the primary purpose for my mbp is video editing. I'm still under AppleCare but I find more solid answers in the forums or at least better questions for the AppleCare people.
Anybody have similar experiences, or a solid idea of what the heck has happened to my machine?

I'm not really sure what method that person was talking about. I just read he had a successful install so I posted it.
    But I'll hazard a guess
    1. copy your entire drive to a backup drive
    2. boot into that drive and test it out - make sure its a flawless backup, it works, and the hard drive has no problems
    3. eject that drive, disconnect it and reboot into the leopard install dvd
    4. erase your main hard drive using disc utilities on the leopard install dvd -- you've made a backup, made sure that backup was good, and disconnected it so it's currently safely disconnected from the leopard install you're about to do. Also, on the hard drive you're erasing and installing leopard on to, many people recommend "Zeroing" it as well as erasing it. That option is part of the erase function in disc utilities on the leopard install disc.
    5. do a clean install of leopard
    6. follow step 4 from that original post exactly as that person described to do.
    7. read the rest of what they said
That's pretty much it. With the backup/erase/clean install/import/ you pretty much get everything you need exactly the way you want it with very few things missing -- and you've done this over a clean install. Plus that poster did mention that you can select what you want to import from your backup hard drive.
It sounds like its a "clean install" method that gives you control via "import from machine" option in the installer. Control over what parts of your "old mac" you want to import into your "new leopard mac".
Hopefully that helps. It sounds more involved, but its actually pretty quick and provides you with a perfectly save backup in case anything goes wrong with the leopard install.

  • Ethernet/Wireless internet problems..This is Driving me CRAZY..please help!

Alright i hope someone out there can solve my problem because i am about to throw my macbook against the wall. This is my problem:
Everytime i go on to the internet, in order for the internet to work i have to pull my ethernet cable out of the plug, plug it back in and refresh the page. The internet then works for about 4 pages on avg. and then it times out and says im not connected. In order to continue surfing on the net i have to pull the cable out and plug it back in. The wireless acts the same way. It will work and then times out. I have to turn off the airport and back on to get any internet.
The browsers im using are Safari 3.1.2 and Firefox 3.0.1 and both act the same way. My roommate has a PC and has had no problems whatsoever. Our internet comes through the wall from a plug not from a router. I personally believe that it is my computer because i have tried getting internet from the plug in his room and the same thing happens. The wireless around my school comes from different towers and no matter where im at the same thing happens. I dont believe that its the internet. Ohh and one more piece of info. My first year at school my computer gave me NO internet problems whatsoever. I bought the computer brand new in June of 2007.
If anyone knows how to fix this extremely annoying problem, please help me!! Thanks to all who answer~

    Hi
I'm getting a problem which may be related, and i've figured out some workarounds (sort of inadequate ones but at least they're something).
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION: almost immediately after installing the 10.5.5. system update, my MacBook started disconnecting itself from my wireless network. i'd be working online and suddenly i'd notice that only 3 bars of the AirPort icon on the menu bar would be showing and that the internet connection was no longer there. the only way to get the connection back would be to switch airport off and then back on and it would connect again. a couple of minutes later the connection would be gone again. infuriating stuff! i checked the system log using the Apple System Profiler (from the Apple menu) and found some messages about there being too many state changes detected on the AirPort network interface and that measures were being taken to fix stuff. it's a pity i didn't save the original error message since i no longer get it, but here's one I found that's identical reported by someone else:
May 25 16:50:57 phoebe mDNSResponder[22]: Note: Frequent transitions for interface en1
(FE80:0000:0000:0000:021E:C2FF:FEB9:8B73); network traffic reduction measures in effect
anyway, the "measures" seemed to be to simply disconnect me from the net, which wasn't great. now the forums mentioned various solutions, but none of them actually worked.
SOLUTION/WORKAROUND: two things seem to have made a difference. 1. i downloaded the combo 10.5.5. system updater and reinstalled it. somehow after i did this the problem would no longer happen (at least those errors would no longer occur). 2. keeping my ipod touch wireless interface switched off, because whenever my touch comes online within a minute or two the iBook disconnects from the net.
COMMENTS: (1) even now if i connect to the wireless network with my iPod, my MacBook's connection will drop - so my solution is to not connect to the wireless network with my iPod touch, which ***** because i like to read stuff in bed on the touch sometimes. (2) reinstalling the system update (the combo version) definitely helped, because before i kept getting that error message in the system log, and even if the iPod touch was switched off the MacBook would still disconnect. (3) this suggest that there were two separate problems, one to do with a corrupted AirPort driver or something of that sort (which was fixed when I reinstalled the system update), and another to do with being kicked off when the iPod touch connects to the wireless network (this problem remains).
I've replace my Linksys wireless router with a Netgear wireless router, but that's made no difference, so i'm pretty sure that the problem has to do with the MacBook - either the hardware or the software. I plan to get another hard disk soon at which point i'll do a clear reinstall of the OS, and if the problem persists then i'll know that it's a MacBook hardware problem. =(
i'll post again here in the future, but if anyone has comments or suggestions or reports of this kind of problem then your input would be highly appreciated.
    thanx

  • Consistently losing internet connectivity with AE and Time Warner

I am trying to help a friend fix a long-standing issue with her wireless network.
    1. Her ISP is Time Warner - she has a cable modem.
    2. She has an Airport Express plugged into it.
    3. She has several Macs, a PC, and 2 iPhone connected wirelessly.
    4. She tells me that several times a week she loses connectivity. My friend fixes it by recycling both the AE and TW cable modem.
    5. Apple replaced the AE even though they didn't think anything was wrong with it. The problem persisted. Her boyfriend tried two other WAPs, the problem persisted.
    6. Her boyfriend thinks that on a few occasions the wireless network still was up, but they were not getting internet through it.
    7. She has had TW out multiple times and they say everything is fine on their end. They said they may have MAC addresses that are "too close together" and my friend should turn on MAC filtering. This makes no sense to me - MAC filtering is for security.
Her boyfriend is going to plug his computer directly into the TW cable modem the next time they lose wireless internet connectivity, but I said I would go over and take a look.
I think the best idea is just rebuild their wireless network (I have "Take Control of Your 802.11 Wireless Network" - great book) and see if that helps. But I would appreciate any troubleshooting assistance.

    Welcome to the discussions!
+She has had TW out multiple times and they say everything is fine on their end. They said they may have MAC addresses that are "too close together" and my friend should turn on MAC filtering. This makes no sense to me - MAC filtering is for security.+
Unfortunately, you'll need to resign yourself to the fact that there will be little if any real assistance from the cable company. The stuff about MAC addresses being too close together, etc is total nonsense. As you point out, MAC Filtering would have no application here either.
+She tells me that several times a week she loses connectivity. My friend fixes it by recycling both the AE and TW cable modem. Apple replaced the AE even though they didn't think anything was wrong with it. The problem persisted. Her boyfriend tried two other WAPs, the problem persisted+
These are clear symptoms that interference of some type is affecting performance on the network. The first thing to do to help improve things is move the Express from it's probable current location down low on the wall behind the cabinet out to an open area where it can radiate its signal as freely as possible. This means using an AC extension cord to place the Express in a better position.
The next thing to do is make sure that the Express is not located near any other electrical devices, cordless phones, televisions, etc. These can all interfere with the wireless signal.
These actions may solve the issue. If not, you'll need to start experimenting with different channels for the wireless network on the Express as other nearby wireless networks may be using the same channel or a close adjacent channel. Start at Channel 11 and start working down until you find a more reliable channel, or run out of channels.
+Her boyfriend is going to plug his computer directly into the TW cable modem the next time they lose wireless internet connectivity+
Not really a good idea unless he knows how to fully reset the modem before he connects it to his computer and then do the same again when connecting back to the AirPort Express. I'm not sure what he hopes to gain by doing this.
+I think the best idea is just rebuild their wireless network (I have "Take Control of Your 802.11 Wireless Network" - great book) and see if that helps+
    Good idea.

  • Time Warner (Road Runner) Internet service - Slow Connection

In my office, we just got Time Warner Cable internet service. We had a T1 with Covad, but we needed to save money.
Now, with the Covad T1, every computer in my office (3 macs and 2 pcs) were all getting a consistent download speed of 1500kbps and upload speed to 1500kbps. That is fine, as that is what we were paying for.
Now, with the Time Warner Cable internet, we are paying for 7000kbps download speed and 768kbps upload speed. Every machine in my office is getting this speed except the Mac G5 (OS 10.3.9) on my desk. My Mac G5 is getting anywhere from 1000-3000kbps download speed and 768kbps upload speed.
As far as I can tell, the problem has to be in my mac. Can somebody please give me a direction to go that might help me get the internet speeds that I am supposed to be getting? The speeds that all the other computer on my network are getting?

First, be sure you are making an Apples-to-Apples comparison. There are lots of ways to get different results.
Then fire up Network Utility (in the Utilities folder) and check your Ethernet (en0). You should see it using the speed you expect ( 1 Gb??) and you should see several error counters that are very nearly zero. If any of these counters are not essentially zero, or climb as you use the Internet, you have a marginal communication problem, possibly a bad cable.
If you are in fact using Gigabit Ethernet, remember that the cables must have all 4 pairs present and firmly mounted in the connectors, because unlike 10 Base-T or 100 Base-T, Gigabit Ethernet uses all four pairs. There is a maximum cable length, but it is about 100 meters (the length of an American Football field).
Network Utility also has a Ping function, and you can ping a convenient nearby node, such as your Router or one of those other computers that seems to be getting better download speeds than you. If several rounds of 10 pings complete without errors or huge time intervals, you could try pinging something farther away, such as your ISP or Microsoft, or Apple, Inc.

  • AirPort Express and Time Warner Wideband Internet

    So.
I live in an apartment with four other people, and just yesterday we had installed Time Warners 50Mb wideband service. The modem with which the service comes is an SMC Networks SMCD3GN modem and wireless router combination.
With infinite grace and kindness, Time Warner has taken the time to hardcode the name of the wireless network as well as the password and -not- allow me access to the management software on the router. Since technically I am leasing this equipment from them, they have no problem doing this to me. If I'd like, I could call Time Warner and have them change the function of the equipment from modem and router to just modem.
My question is this: can I use the AirPort Express A1264 as a wireless router -without- sacrificing speeds? I rudimentarily installed the APE (is that the acronym people use?) just plugging into it an outgoing ethernet cable from the router, and when I connected to the network, I was getting speeds of about 10Mb, not the 50 I'm paying for.
And while I'm here, what's the best way to boost the 38Mb speeds I get on my wireless network vs the almost 50 wired? I have a feeling it has something to do with interference (I'm in a big building in New York and there must be over 25 other networks I pick up) but like I said I can't change that without access to my router.
Help me squeeze every last kb/s out of this situation!
    Thaaank you
    Will

My question is this: can I use the AirPort Express A1264 as a wireless router -without- sacrificing speeds?
Any router, with NAT enabled, will introduce some "loss" of bandwidth across the WAN-to-LAN interface. That would be true for both the AirPort Express Base Station (AX) or the SMC Gateway that was provided to you by your ISP. Disabling the SMC's NAT and substituting the NAT service provided by the AX will probably not "buy" you any additional performance gains.
The reality is that no one experiences speeds anywhere near to what their ISP claims to offer, at least not when it comes to Web surfing. This isn't entirely the ISP's fault. The ISP's claimed throughput rates are for sustained downloads of an individual file ... and from their Internet infrastructure servers. 99% of the time you will not be accessing web pages from their servers but from other servers located elsewhere on the Internet.
As you know web pages are typically made up of several files—the HTML code, graphics, Flash elements, and so forth—each of which has its own latency. And then there are all the vagaries of the Internet as data from the Web site hops from router to router down to your computer. This is why, when ISPs advertise download speeds, they're only referring to downloads directly from their own servers.
And while I'm here, what's the best way to boost the 38Mb speeds I get on my wireless network vs the almost 50 wired?
There's at least two things that you can do to improve your local wireless network bandwidth: 1) Operate the network in 802.11n only mode in the 5 GHz radio band. If the router offers it, make sure that you run this network in a "wide" or "double" band mode, and 2) Remove all sources of Wi-Fi interference. The second one will definitely prove to be more challenging in your current environment.

  • I'm having trouble with "maps" on Macbook Pro, iPad and iPhone.  It shows my current location and hour away from where I am.  As soon as a move iPhone away from my wifi at home to cellular it shows my correct location.  No help from Time Warner.

What can I do to get "maps" to work on my Macbook Pro, iPad and iPhone when connected to wifi at home.  iPhone "maps" work fine when connected to cellular service. Maps on wifi shows me about 55 minutes away from my current location.  Very frustrating.  I called Time Warne,r my service provider, but they had no answers since they were not knowledgeable of this situation.  Anyone else having problem?  I just updated all devices to newest update.  Is that the problem.

Did you bring your wireless router with you? If so, it's possible the iPad is getting its location through the router and the router still "thinks" it's where you used to live.
Try taking your iPad to another location where there is wifi (such as a coffee shop). Then, try an app that uses location services. If it's accurate at another location, then the source of your problem is your router.
