Another USB Ethernet problem

I've read all the post regarding this issue. All of a sudden my wired internet connection can not be established. The USB port and ethernet adapter work fine (I checked them). I try to set up a new connection and it 1st says No Ip address and the light is yellow, but then I get that there is not ethernet plugged into my computer. Frustrating. The air is not reading my ethernet. Any help? Thanks.

I am tempted to do a full OS reinstall as this has helped some people. The reinstall option has been the only one that Apple has provided. I would rather they (apple) not get in the habit of using "reinstall" as an option for their own QA shortcomings.
What if anything have you done to insure that the system installed on your Mac was free of any defects before you applied the update? By far the most common reason reinstalling the OS fixes update problems is that some part of the system was compromised after the OS was originally installed. Unlike installing the OS, which runs under the control of an external copy of the OS, an update runs under the control of the very copy of the OS that is being modified. Thus, a corrupted system file, a third party modification, or any of a number of other problems that can go undetected in normal use can interfere with the proper application of an update in ways that are very hard to differentiate from a problem in the update itself.
IOW, it is Apple's responsibility to provide products free of QA shortcomings, but the user's responsibility to make sure those products do not become damaged or adulterated after they are delivered. Apple provides some tools (like Disk Utility) that can detect & repair some damage but it isn't practical for it to provide tools that can detect or repair every possible problem. For these, reinstalling the OS is a more practical & often much quicker solution.

I've gone through several USB Ethernet dongles today.  One was a generic product that worked for less than a minute and forced me to shut down my macbook air, the second was a Belkin that never worked and the 3rd was an actual new Apple USB/Ethernet dongle.  The last two never worked at all.  Is there some special procedure to get these adapters to work?

You can try to download the latest ASIX AX88772B/AX88772A/AX88760/AX88772 Mac OSX 10.7 driver v3.5.0 from ASIX's driver download web page (http://www.asix.com.tw/download.php?sub=driverdetail&PItemID=97) and refer to the driver installation guide to update the revised driver onto your Lion Mac OSX 10.7 system.
For the AX88178 USB 2.o to Gigabit dongle, please refer to AX88178 Driver Download web page (http://www.asix.com.tw/download.php?sub=driverdetail&PItemID=84) to download the latest AX88178 Mac OSX 10.7 driver v3.6.0 and also refer to the driver installation guide to update the revised driver onto your Lion Mac OSX 10.7 system.

  • Yet another usb key problem [solved]

i recently purchased 2 apacer 2GB usb flash drives so i could transfer my files between computers with ease and speed. i have the computer, using udev rules, recognizing the drives as i put them in, and automounting them to a /mnt directory.
    couple questions about it though
    1. the drives are read only, and cannot be changed from (using chmod or chown) root
    drwxr-xr-x 4 root root 16384 Nov 14 11:18 usb1
    how can i fix this?
    [root@creech ~]# ls -l /mnt

assuming that you are running KDE or Gnome there is no need to modify /mnt or create any extra folders. KDE and Gnome will handle removable devices automatically
    conditions:
    1) running dbus/hal
    2) slight changes to /etc/fstab
    usbfs                  /proc/bus/usb usbfs     noauto              0      0
    proc                   /proc         proc      defaults            0      0
    sysfs                  /sys          sysfs     noauto              0      0
upon inserting usb key system will  automatically mount it in
    /media/sdbX
where X is connected device number (if you connect more than one at a time)
in case that you close window, go to system -> storage media -> your_usb_stick
    3) user added to storage group
if you are using xfce or less then get ivman it is easy to configure and works very well.
    hope this will help
thanks, i will try it tonight, i had no power at my house last night due to a windstorm, hopefully this will work (i would ssh to my computer from here and set it up, but i guess i forgot to turn on ssh at home )

  • MBA failed to recognize 2nd USB Ethernet

    Hi:
I had a USB Ethernet dongle working fine with my MBA.  Recently I purchased another USB Ethernet dongle (different brand), but MBA just wouldn't recongnize the 2nd dongle everytime I plug in.  When I select to "+" a new interface at the Network preference, there is just no USB Ethernet to choose from.
Each time i plug in the 2nd USB Ethernet dongle, I got the following from the console:
    3/8/13 12:39:23.671 PM com.apple.kextd[12]: Can't load /System/Library/Extensions/USBCDCEthernet.kext - no code for running kernel's architecture.

3/8/13 12:39:23.000 PM kernel[0]: considerRebuildOfPrelinkedKernel prebuild rebuild has expired
3/8/13 12:39:23.672 PM com.apple.kextd[12]: Load com.apple.driver.dts.USBCDCEthernet failed; removing personalities from kernel.
It looks like there is a driver issue so I installed the official drivers provided by the 2nd USB Ethernet dongle but still no good.
I was not able to google anything useful relating to the above.  Is there anyone got the same experience?
    Many thanks.

  • My USB Ethernet connection drops when another USB device is plugged in?

I have a MacBook Air (Mac OS X 10.6.7 but it happened with older OS versions, too) and have a few issues with my wired ethernet connection. (through USB Ethernet adapter).
    1. When I have the USB adapter plugged in when I wake the MacBook Air up it won't be recognised (have to plug it in after wake up)
    2. (that is more annoying). When I have the Adapter connected and I plug in another USB device (like a USB stick) into the other slot, my USB EthernetConnection drops! Only once I unplug the adapter and plug it back in it works again.
Is there maybe a firmware upgrade that should be installed or something??
    Does anybody have an idea???
    Thanks

Hi, you can upgrade the Firmware for the wrt54g router under the system screen.
you will find the "upgrade Firmware" tab under the system screen.
Once the Firmware has been upgraded you can then reset the router by holding and pressing the reset on the back panel for 30seconds. And then reconfigure the router again.

  • Another USB no tworking problem

So I got a brand new iPod yesterday and plugged it into the USB port on the left hand side, no problem. Charged up, data transfered, yada, yada. I shut the computer down and went to bed. When I turned it on this morning, my USB port no longer sends data! It gives power, but not information. Anyone ever heard of such a thing?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
Are you saying you removed the iPod, and connected a thumb drive or another USB data transfer device and it wouldn't allow you to transfer data to it via that port? Or are you saying that it appears the iPod won't receive any more data? If the latter, once synchronized the iPod will simply add new songs/books/movies/etc... as you add them to iTunes. Are you saying you added another song to the library, or a new playlist and it didn't transfer to the iPod?

  • Cannot apply OS image to lenovo with usb Ethernet

    Greetings,
We have a Windows 8.1 task sequence which works fine on over a dozen laptops that have an ethernet adapter. We recently acquired a Lenovo Helix machine that doesnt have an inbuilt adapter but has a usb ethernet adapter. I found the driver for this
and added it to our winpe image (we are using sccm 2012 r2, adk 8.1, winpe 5). When I use the same task sequence, it always fails on the apply OS image step. Relevant log entries here:

Does OSD have a problem with USB ethernet adapters? It appears so....
    Thanks
    David Z

Yes, it does have something to do with USB Ethernet. Before conclusion, we may check if there is a workaround or fix for this issue to make OSD work. So, please check the IP Info when the issue happens.
Another way is to use a Standalone media.

  • USB Ethernet will not configure

    Hello,
Today I started to have problems with my USB Ethernet dongle on my Yosemite Macbook Pro Late 2013 Retina.   I deleted the device from Network Utility then rebooted thinking I would re-initialze it.  After rebooting, the System Info recognizes the USB LAN device but Network Utility does not list it.  This appears to be software issue.  I have confirmed the dongle works fine on another laptop (Windows).  Any ideas how to fix this issue?
    TIA

The driver is built into Mac OS X.  The dongle worked fine for weeks on Yosemite.  It is a Cable Matters Cable Matters USB 2.0 to 10/100 Fast Ethernet

  • MacBook AIr usb ethernet slow when connected to second switch

    Hi,
We have MacBook Airs with 100 Mbps Apple USB ethernet adapters.
We have managed Cisco switches for the LAN.
We experience fast speeds when a USB etherenet/MacBook Air is connected directly to the switch.
However... if we introduce a second switch between the MacBook AIr and the main Cisco switch we experience horiffic slowdowns for some (not all) network activity.
For example, we have IP phones with ethernet passthrough. They work great with iMacs and Thunderbok Macbook Airs. However, if we connect a MacBook AIr/etherenet adpater to the ethernet phone, we expereience a horrific slowdown when using Apple Remote Desktop Manage > Copy items... (and also on connectoins to an in-house database). It's probably 15 - 20x slower than when connected directly to the Cisco switch. Other network operatoins work at expected speeds an the Air.
It's not just connecting to IP phnones that causes this problem. If I use a Netgear 1000/100 switch on the desktop, set up as
MacBok Air USB ethernet > Netgear > Cisco
we have the same horrible slowdown for some network operations.
I purchased a 3rd party USB adpater, but had the same results.
Can anyone shed any light on this issue, please? Is there a setting onn teh CISCO switch that is causing the problem? Any know problmes with USB etherenet on MacBook air.
    Many thanks,
    b.

Is this a question? A complaint? Nothing any of us can do about that, and this is a well-documented and well-known issue.
It doesn't effect most MBA users who most likely use wireless for most of their transactions, and the times you need to use ethernet, you are right, it will run slower.
Just curious I have a pretty fast 5N wifi network. If I'm setting up a new MB Air from another laptop is it going to be faster through the ethernet adapter or the wifi network?

  • USB Ethernet stop working after hotplug

I have found that my Apple USB Ethernet dongle stop working if I plug in another USB device. This happens both using a USB hub, and when plugging directly into the MacBook Air. I also see this problem when using a similar dongle from another supplier (called AX88x72A). The USB Ethernet dongle works fine after booting, with status "Connected", but if I plug in another device like my phone or a  USB drive, the status changes to "Cable Unplugged" after a few seconds, ifconfig no longer show the en1 interface, and syslog gives a few error lines such as:
    Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: en1
    Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: Ethernet \[AppleUSBEthernet\]: Link down on en1
    Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: AppleUSBEthernet::prepareForFlash - Link down, Device 87bf600
    Fri Jan 13 13:17:19 Airbook-II kernel[0] <Debug>: AppleUSBEthernet::prepareForFlash - Link down, Device 87bf600
After this, I must reboot the MacBook Air to get the dongle working again. Do anybody know how to force the AppleUSBEthernet driver to rescan the device tree (or something similar)?
    With regards,
    Birger Retterstøl Olaisen

I have exactly the same problem here (MacBook Air 2,1 - OSX 10.6.8). After several tries (and reboots!), I've found that an unload/reload of the USB Ethernet driver works.
Note that operation is not automatic: I have to execute commands in a terminal in order to retrieve my Ethernet connection... but it is far better than a reboot!
So, if  you want to test my method, once you have plugged a USB key (or after an hotplug of your USB-ethernet dongle), you can execute these commands on your terminal (note there are 2 lines and no space in the kext name, a space may be inserted by this forum):
    sudo kextunload /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBEth ernet.kext
    sudo kextload /System/Library/Extensions/IONetworkingFamily.kext/Contents/PlugIns/AppleUSBEth ernet.kext
Of course, i've made a small script with these commands, and copied it on my PATH so it is even easier to execute it. It works perfectly for me, and I hope it could help.
    David.

  • Cannot access usb ethernet after upgrade

I upgraded from 10.5.5 to 10.5.8 via download and now cannot access USB Ethernet. Select "Network" in System Preferences & all I get is "beach ball." When I disconnect USB Ethernet, Network appears. I had to use Apple USB Ethernet adaptor because Ethernet board got fried and did not want to buy new Mac. Can I go back to 10.5.0 then to 10.5.5 combo? If so, how?

Solved my own problem. Reinstalled 10.5 then the 10.5.5 Combo updater and now USB Ethernet works. I guess I will stay away from any further updates after this. So, my ancient eMac lives for another day.

  • Aiport Express/USB-Ethernet Adapter

I want to use a USB/Ethernet adapter to plug into by Airport Express base station.  Will this allow me to connect my Direct TV box to my network?

I use the AE to feed my Direct TV box Ethernet connection all the time - what is the problem ?
Its feed wirelessly from the Airport Extreme main unit in the middle of the house. In fact I have two Airport Express and an Apple TV which I move around as I need to depending if I am at the mancave or in the main house or our back by the pool, in fact I am ordering another A Express so I want have to move em around,
however - I would like a cheaper ethernet wireless connection to my three direct tv boxes, not at 99 each , since I dont need the USB and Audio for just the direct tv's . I am checking compatibility now and will go to best buy tommorow to try some ,

  • USB ethernet does not work in left USB port

My USB ethernet adapter does not work in the left USB port on my MacBook Air, but it works in the right side. Other devices, like my mouse, work fine in both ports.
Could I have a faulty left-side port with too little power for the ethernet adapter, or is this normal for MacBook Air?

    I have the same problem.
USB Ethernet doesn't work with the left USB port. It does work with the right USB port, and any other USB device works with the left USB port on my macbook air
    Any solution to this problem?

  • USB Ethernet no longer recognized?

    Hi
After a reinstall of Leopard to remove languages and the sorts I had a slim installation on my air and everything was running nicely. Now however the USB Ethernet is not being recognized at all .. I have checked with the superdrive and no problems there. I have plugged the USB Ethernet dongle into my MBP and the dongle is clearly alive.
Why will my MBA not recognize the thing anymore? It just sits there utterly unresponsively, claiming that the cable is unplugged .. which it is not??
    /Jan

Hmm .. one extra restart seemed to take care of business. How odd. Anyways everything is working here for me again

  • USB ethernet connection via switch no longer works after installing Mountain Lion

Since installing Mountain Lion, I have no longer been able to use my USB ethernet connection via an ethernet switch. I have deleted and re-added the connection in preferences. The connection reads "Connected" but it is not working as connected (unless I bypass the switch and plug directly). I have tried doing this with two different switches to no avail. Does anyone have a solution? Thanks.

I Read this sollution elsewhere on these forums and found that this worked for me.
However, the "load" time in Safari is not as fast as it used to be. Might be due to some router setting.
    Solution:
For all the Dutch users that have a KPN Experiabox router:
    1) go to http://192.168.2.254
    2) Username: KPN Password: leave empty (You might have changed this yourself)
    3) Go to Network (at the top)
    4) Go to WLAN (at the left)
    5) Set as follows:
    Enable WLAN: Enable
    Mode: IEEE 802.11g Only
    Channel: 7
    Transmitting power: 100%
    Enable WMM QoS: Disable
This fixed my wifi problems. Good luck
