Anti-Virus XP Pro and OS X

Can I install McAfee Virus Scan on the (bootcamped) XP drive and Virex on the Mac drive, or will there be a conflict? I presume it should not, but just want to make sure before I install them.
MacBook Pro 15"   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   2.16 MHz, 1GB RAM, 100 GB HDD

You can, and you should, install Virus Scan (or any other AV software) on your Windows volume. It will not affect Mac OS X.
Virex is not recommended for use on OS 10.4 and later and is not yet Universal Binary. If you really need to use Virex, use version 7.2, not version 7.5 or higher which contains a background scanner.
For Mac OS X, if you need to scan for Windows viruses, I recommend ClamXav:

Hello everyone.I just wanted to know that do i need an anti virus for my macbook pro and if yes then which is the best anti-virus for it and i can download the anti-virus software from which site? Thanks for everyones help for my previous question..it really helped me.

There's no know virus that can impact a Mac, but if you run Windows via Parallels or Boot Camp then you're just as vulbnerable as any PC user.
If you want to scan your system to be sure check out the free utilities ClamXav and Sophos Anti Virus

  • Which anti virus software should I install and will it slow my MacBook Pro

Hello, in light of the Macs being infected by the Flash Virus, which anti virus is recommended and will it slow my computer down a whole lot?

Mac OS X versions 10.6.7 and later have built-in detection of known Mac malware in downloaded files. The recognition database is automatically updated once a day; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders. In most cases, there’s no benefit from any other automated protection against malware.
The most effective defense against malware is your own intelligence. All known malware that affects a fully-updated installation of Mac OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of trojans, which can only work if the victim is duped into running them. If you're smarter than the malware attacker thinks you are, you won't be duped. That means, primarily, that you never install software from an untrustworthy source. How do you know a source is untrustworthy?
Any website that prompts you to install a “codec,” “plug-in,” or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown site, merely in order to use the site, is untrustworthy.
A web operator who tells you that you have a “virus,” or that anything else is wrong with your computer, or that you have won a prize in a contest you never entered, is trying to commit a crime with you as the victim.
“Cracked” versions of commercial software downloaded from a bittorrent are likely to be infected.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, must be downloaded directly from the developer’s website. No intermediary is acceptable.
Disable Java (not JavaScript) in your web browser(s). Few websites have Java content nowadays, so you won’t be missing much. This setting is mandatory in Mac OS X 10.5.8 or earlier, because Java in those versions has bugs that make it unsafe to use on the Internet. Those bugs will probably never be fixed, because those older operating systems are no longer being maintained by Apple. Migrate to a newer version of the Mac OS as soon as you can.
Follow these guidelines, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can reasonably be.
Never install any commercial "anti-virus" products for the Mac, as they all do more harm than good. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use ClamXav — nothing else.

  • Is there An anti-virus program for a Mac Book Pro

Is there an ant-virus program for a Mac Book Pro?

YES, there is. It is built into Mac OS X. All you need to do to use it is keep Mac OS X up-to-date.
This built-in Anti-Virus works better and is far less obtrusive than any third-party stuff you can add on. Most of the third-party anti-Virus add-ons are JUNK.
But Viruses, while they cannot be ignored, are actually quite rare on the Mac. If you have a flashy anti-Virus scan that reminds you it is there by slowing down your Mac and visibly scanning things, you can lull yourself into thinking you are protected, but you are NOT!
A much more serious problem is malware, and most malware requires you to help (or at least be complicit) to get onto your Mac. Nothing can replace your constant Vigilance. They ARE out to get you, and steal your financial data, and take over your Mac.
Don't click on ANY links sent to you in emails.
Don't visit Torrent sites, and don't download software from third-party sites.
Don't download "players" from the same site that is providing the content.
No one can tell whether your Mac is infected with anything from outside your Mac. This is ALWAYS a scam.
You have not won a contest you did not enter. You should never have to pay to collect your prize.
Providing your banking information to anyone (to send you money) is an invitation for them to empty that account and disappear.

  • Host based Anti-Virus and Cisco Security

    Hello Everyone,
Happy Friday. I was wondering if there are any advantages to using 1 brand of anti-virus on PCs and servers as relates to Cisco Security. I know Symantec is soemthing of a competitor as opposed to Trend and Cisoc even uses Trend signature in some of their devices. I personally have a likeing for SYmantec as far as AV goes but if there is an advantage that is easily explited by a Cisco network of using something else I would like to know about it.
Thanks in advnace. All replies rated.

    Hello angel-moon,
If you are talking about host based security then Cisco provides CSA,which is an extensive Host based IPS + Antivirus tool

  • Anti-Virus Software on Dell Studio 14z

Purchased dell studio 14z on Friday here in Wilmington, NC. Dell Box and Best Buy Website stated computer came with Norton Anti-virus 15 month trail. A Norton CD in the box but not pre-loaded on computer with other software like Office and Adobe Reader. Note this dell does not have an optical drive. However Kaspersky anti-virus was loaded and I was already hit with a virius over the weekend. The Geek Squad is re-imaging the computer today. However they didn't give me a clear answer on what security software is suppose to be loaded on this computer and if  need to purchase or activate the license for protection? Why wasn't Norton preloaded like the other software listed with the computer purchase price?

I think a hyprid solution is the best.

  • Poture Validation of anti-virus products

    Hi all
I have recently setup set up NAC framework to support dot1x for wireless and wired clients. My ACS appliance is successfully authentication users via eap-fast using personal and machine certs and it successfully posture checks that the users are using the correct CTA client, windows OS with correct patches.
But for the life of me I cannot work out how to set up my ACS NAP posture validation rules to check Symantec's Anti-virus version 10 and check the current dat file.
I have researched to the point where I think I have to upload NAC attributes to ACS appliance but not sure how. Setting up NAP posture rules to check against Cisco or Windows software is not that difficult and was well documented, but how to posture check a 3rd party software application is not well documented.
The url I have been looking at is
    http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/sw/secursw/ps2086/products_user_guide_chapter09186a00802335eb.html#wp366304
I'm just not 100% sure I'm on the right track here??
If anyone knows or has info how to setup NAP to posture check against 3rd party vendor software (like Symantec?s anti-virus) , I'd love to read up more about it.
One last question, if I am on the right track here, would I setup a posture validation rule for Symantec by just duplicating the rule I have for checking my CTA client ?
    e.g rule
    Cisco:PA:PA-NAME = Symantec Anti-Virus
    and
    Cisco:PA:PA-Version >= X.X.X
    and
    Cisco:PA:Machine-Posture-State >= 1
    Brain bender 
    Thanks all
    Dale

    Hi,
Have you installed the Symantec NAC Posture Plugin (Symantec Client Security Posture Plug-in
) ? You can find this MSI installer on the Symantec CD. This plugin provides an interface to CTA for checking the status of Symantec AV and its parameters as CTA has no way for directly getting this status from the Symantec Application.
In most cases the Symantec AV attributes are already pre-loaded on the ACS. You can verify this by making sure that you see the System Token named "Symantec:AV".
After completing the above steps then define a posture validation rule using
    1. Symantec:AV:Protection-Enabled (Healthy for a value of "1" and Quarantine\etc else.)
    2. Symantec:AV:Dat-Version (You will have to manually specify the minimum acceptable version (E.g. 2007.05.1... ) to declare a System Healthy).
You probably will have to keep updating the 2 above to keep the minimum version in line with the latest available. A workaround to this is to use another 3rd party AV which relies on an external AV server to get this version dynamically (E.g. Trend Micro). In this case ACS doesn't make the decision but forwards the credentials to the external AV. Symantec support for NAC is very limited and i don't see that improving considering they have their own NAC solution to market.
    Thanks,
    Naman

  • Problem after anti-virus update

    Hello everybody.
One of our client uses Oracle XE on a Windows server. Two days ago after an automatic update for the installed anti-virus, Oracle stoped to work. The Listener does't come up any longer. I'm waiting for the listener.log file from the client. In the meanwhile, any idea about this issue? Thank you. Filippo

They said me that the anti-virus is Symantec and doesn't have any firewall service. Even with it down, the problem is still alive.

  • Anti Virus choices for Windows 7

I am looking to see what AV software if compatable with the current beta.
I normally use Avast on my home systems but I am not sure if the current version will work and I am not yet ready to install Windows 7 but wanted to make sure I was ready to go as soon as I am.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

    Avast works with it.
And here is the rest of the Anti-Spyware/Anti-malware gear to go with it.
No problems installing, or updating with any of them.
    http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html
Avast Anti-Virus is XP and Vista compatible (32bit and 64bit Versions), FREE, auto-updating, and a low resources user of your computer.
And, only have 1(one) Anti-Virus installed / running on your computer at any one time..
Conflicts may occur if you have more than 1(one).

  • My anti-virus detects jdeveloper.exe as a Trojan

    Hello there
I am using free Avira-Antivir and now i just cant use my jdeveloper Studio because on every try to launch it the anti virus alerts me and shows that jdeveloper.exe is a Trojan (Virus: TR/Dropper.Gen ) I had jdev10133, i removed it and after i downloaded jdev10134 and the same result. How do i fix the problem, is my computer infected or should i remove the antivirus?
    Thx

I downloaded oracle data modeller (datamodeling-1.5.1-525-no-jre.zip) today and made a virus scan on the file and yes there is TR/Dropper.Gen virus inside.
Of course i think its false alarm but its still there.
Here you can go on oracle page and download it http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/sql_developer/files/Modeling.html

  • Does my iMac need anti-virus software

I've read recently that iMacs have been susceptable to viruses.  Does my iMac need anti-virus software?  And if so, d0es Apple recommend any one in particular?

  • I installed 10.6.8 from 10.6.6 on my Macbook Pro and now can't open Safari-think it's something to do with the Intego anti-virus software. Reverted Intego software back to default state and now computer just boots ups up slowly and can't access a thing.

I installed 10.6.8 from 10.6.6 OS on my MacBook Pro and have not been able to open secure sites on Safari.  Think it has something to do with the Intego Anti-virus installed.  Tried restoring Intego to default status and now my Mac barely boots up and does nothing else but spin.  Ugh.  Has anyone had similar issues and if so, were you able to resolve?  How?  Thanks,

1: Backup your user files folders of Documents, Music, Pictures etc., to a external powered drive (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
2: Insert the 10.6 installer disk and reboot holding c
3: Simply reinstall OS X without erasing the drive, it will overwrite the installed version of OS X and the root level software, but leave your Applications folder contents (expect Apple bundled programs) and user files alone. (but backup anyway in case it fails)
4: Reboot and the Integro is gone out of your system, but there may still be something laying around in Applicaitons to delete. Use Software Update to get up to date.
5: You don't need anti-virus on a Mac, Apple provides it already for you sight unseen.
6: If you Software update, the bad certificate issues are pulled, thus are not a threat.

  • What is the best mac cleaner and anti virus for mac pro.

what is the best mac cleaner and anti virus for mac pro.

OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it updated with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "speed up", "clean up", "optimize", or "accelerate" your Mac. Without exception, they will do the opposite.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources. Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.
Don’t open email attachments from email addresses that you do not recognize, or click links contained in an email:
Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If your iTunes or App Store account becomes disabled for valid reasons, you will know when you try to buy something or log in to this support site, and are unable to.
Don’t install browser extensions unless you understand their purpose. Go to the Safari menu > Preferences > Extensions. If you see any extensions that you do not recognize or understand, simply click the Uninstall button and they will be gone.
Don’t install Java unless you are certain that you need it:
Java, a non-Apple product, is a potential vector for malware. If you are required to use Java, be mindful of that possibility.
Disable Java in Safari > Preferences > Security.
Despite its name JavaScript is unrelated to Java. No malware can infect your Mac through JavaScript. It’s OK to leave it enabled.
Block browser popups: Safari menu > Preferences > Security > and check "Block popup windows":
Popup windows are useful and required for some websites, but popups have devolved to become a common means to deliver targeted advertising that you probably do not want.
Popups themselves cannot infect your Mac, but many contain resource-hungry code that will slow down Internet browsing.
If you ever see a popup indicating it detected registry errors, that your Mac is infected with some ick, or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. To date, most of these attempts have been pathetic and are easily recognized, but that is likely to change in the future as criminals become more clever.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

  • Youtube video is not playing on my macbook pro laptop. I have norton anti virus and firewall installed on it.

youtube video is not playing on my mac pro laptop. Just a blank screen shows up where the video should be playing. I have norton anti virus and firewall installed on the laptop. Could it have something to do with it?

unless you have a partition for another operating system, such as Windows or Linux, most mac users would agree that any a/v software is completly unnecesary and will do more harm than good.  There is a free a/v in the appstore called "ClamXav.   Have you installed all software updates and also have you tried youtube using different browsers (chrome, safari, opera, etc)?
