Any control of iPad system prefs in Lion Server or Configurator

I've been working with Configurator to set up some test iPads to be used in a library environment, and haven't seen any place where I can disable system sounds, keyboard clicks etc - does anyone know if this is possible under Configurator or Lion Server ?
Also is there a way to not allow logging out of the Apple ID once the device is configured or to block system preferences all together once configured.
Thanks
Rich

If you do not see something listed on the restrictions list on an individual ipad under settings- general- restrictions then there is not a way to block or disable it.  IOS 6 may provide for more control.  It will allow for disabling the home button but beyond that we will have to see.

    How can I fix this?

Boot with your bootable backup/clone and restore it. If you don't have one, boot with your install disc and restore your Time Machine backup from some point in the past before the problem cropped up. Don't have one of those either? Then, boot with the install disc and reinstall Snow Leopard. That should restore all functionality without mucking with anything else. Then, run Software Update to get to something other than the 10.6 that your profile is showing, namely 10.6.4, the latest version, repair permissions, and restart.

Ok, after days of browsing on the forum I found the following hint on another discussion related to AFP access:
"This may be a service ACL issue.
It turns out one of the latest Apple updates turned on Service ACL's which caused AFP connections to be  blocked. Once I fixed the Service ACL in Server Admin... all connections and Single Sign On worked."
Well, after allowing access to all services to all users with Server Admin, we were finally able to log in the server with our admin account...
So, there must have been an update that turned on ACL's which caused even our local access, probably for OD/Kerberos, on the server to be restricted.

  • Mountain Lion server VPN configuration problem

I'm having a problem connecting to my Mountain Lion server VPN even on my home local network.  The configuration is so simple but I can't figure out what I need to do to get it to connect.  Trying from my iphone and also ipad going directly to the ip address of the server and have the user account name, password and secret filled out as I have it set on the server but the connection fails.  I was at first thinking it might be a DNS issue, but then dismissed that since it's happening on the local network.  It seems to be an authentication issue, however I'm using the same settings as on the server. I have other services working such as file server, DNS and SUS so the product itself is fine, just the VPN service.
    Any ideas?

I had the same "No CHAP secret found for authenticating username" issue. I've been at this VPN thing for many many hours over many days. Desperately want OS X Server to work.
Finally I just bought iVPN to see if that would work somehow--- AND IT TOTALLY DID.
So, forget Mac OS X Server VPN. Just forget it. There are definitely many problems out there facing VPN access. But if you're at the point I was, where it's connecting just not authenticating, then forget Mac OS X Server.

  • How to import Lion Server VPN Configuration Profile into Profile Manager

    Greetings All,
I'm working on configuring a Lion Server VPN (10.7.2) and I hit the following road block. I succesfully started the VPN server and profile manager. In fact, if I download the built-in "everyone" profile that has the pre-configured VPN to device such as an iPad things work just fine. However, I'd like to create other profiles with the same VPN configuration info so I can delegate more specifically to different groups and users. I was hoping I could simply import the VPN configuration profile that I saved in the Server dashboard when I setup the VPN service into profile manager somehow. The reason I'm going this route is because every time I try to just re-make the VPN profile it doesn't want to work. I'm not sure why, but I figure why re-invent the wheel if I don't have too. Any suggestions?

After a lot of investigating I haven't found a way to do this, I'm assuming it cannot be done.

  • .mac system pref

Has anyone had any problems with .mac system pref?

    Scott,
I did a quick check on System Preferences Help and this is what I found:What to do if .Mac syncing seems sluggish
Sometimes we need coffee as a pick-me-up; sometimes .Mac Sync may seem like it could use some too. If you've noticed that syncing your .Mac data is taking longer than it used to, reset your data to speed things up again.
Each time you make changes to your data and sync it to .Mac, it creates new entries. Over time, all these separate entries can start to slow down the sync process.
To avoid this, reset your data to create a single complete record for each type of data that you're synchronizing (bookmarks, keychains, contacts, and so on). As you reset your data, it will take a while as it's uploading all the data, but in subsequent syncs .Mac will be able to read these entries more quickly than having to go through multiple records, which should perk your sync time right up.While I realize this information may not apply to your situation, and until you hear from someone else you may want to look at the System Preference Help Topics for more tips.
I consider the iDisk copy on my computer extraneous and I have iDisk Syncing Off.

  • Mountain Lion Server: add network user to remote management

    Hi,
So recently I have upgraded from Lion Server to ML Server. A little disappointing, but whatever, I've moved on and got everything almost back to where I had it with Lion.
My last few issues I believe are related but can't quite figure it out. In Lion I have an admin profile and then a network user profile that I used on my MBP bound with AD. I'm at the stage where my nre network user can log in on the server machine but I can't log in as the network user via screen sharing. I can't add a network user to Remote Management, and with Remote Management enabled Screen Sharing is greyed out. I'd really like this to work.
My second problem is that I can't bind my MBP to the server but even when bound the network user account can't log in.
    Any body have  any ideas?
    Thanks!

I had this problem on a clean install.
The solution was incredibly simple for me, but only  after I saw Ross.M's note about opening the Users & Groups settings panel (in the OS System Prefs, not in server) and rebinding to OD server under Login Options.
That was not the solution for me, but under Login Options I discovered a previously unnoticed pref for "Allow network users to login at login window."  I had this option set (apparently by default) to "Only these network users:"  but with an empty list.  Adding my users to the list made it work perfectly.

  • Mountain Lion Server Workgroup Login Selections

    Hi All,
I am installing a Mountain Lion Mac Mini server which is replacing our Snow Leopard Mac Mini server.
The system is bound to 2008R2 ADS. When I log into the Snow Leopard Server from a client I am presented with which group I would like to log in to as in ADS I am a member of two groups. ie admins and staff. This is how we have set it up so all is good there.
The issue that I am having is that the groups are not being being presented on the client when logging into Mountain Lion Server although the configuration on the two servers is the same.
Has anybody experienced this problem before? Maybe this is now default behaviour with Mountain Lion server? The problem is its automatically logging us in with the most restrictive group so we have no admin rights on the clients.
Thanks in advance for any info!!

  • Is Lion Server Better than SL Server?

For those of you who have upgraded your Snow Leopard servers to Lion, is it worth it?  I have upgraded my desktop Macs and my MBP to Lion, but I hesitate to upgrade the Mac mini servers I am running for my company because of upgrade glitch and performance concerns.
My impression of Lion at this point is that most of the enhancements are in the user controls and the desktop, which are not important issues for the servers.  The Macs that I upgraded from SL to Lion actually appear to be more sluggish than before, particularly when it comes to network performance and streaming, so I have yet to see an actual performance advantage beyond the changes to the user interface.
I also have a lot of web applications using MySQL and I have read reports of the Lion upgrade breaking MySQL from the SL install.  I am also running the Apache security module (ModSecurity), which was difficult to install in SL.  I had to manually build the library files for it so I'm assuming the Lion upgrade will break the ModSecurity installation.
Are my fears unfounded or will an upgrade to Lion from SL be problematic on a production server that's run for a business?

I wouldn't upgrade it yet on a production machine since there are issues. Actually it's probably best to do it on a test Server and manually migrating the data over to Lion Server at this point.
It's true a lot of things break if you just do a plain upgrade over SLS since I upgraded my own test server to evaluate Lion Server before upgrading my clients SLS. I have yet seen any upgrades from any server version work well. Something normally doesn't transfer well and best to manually migrate stuff.
If you do a clean install of Lion and then Install Lion Server most things work pretty well so far such as mail and apache, and OD.
NOTE: However you need to have at least at DNS already running on another machine so when Lion Server does a reverse name lookup, It'll find the name of the server. If you at any point change the name of the Lion Server, you'll break links and other stuff don't seem to work well.  This also solves the issue of nstat_lookup_entr failed.
So far I've Installed Pure-FTPd Manager 1.8 and Recompiled pure-ftpd 1.0.32 and works fine in 10.7 Server. I'll give more of a progress report over the next few days as I configure the server to my liking.
Even though Apple removed mysql in Lion Server. You can install mysql from mysql.com,  Mac OS 10.6 64bit version.  As for what I read online, it should work. I've installed it but haven't tested it yet, but should have it running in the next day and see how it runs.

  • OSX Lion Server vs Client performance

I am using a Mac Mini (current generation) with a Drobo 2nd generation (running firewire 800) as a server in my home.  It hosts my itunes shared library, Iphoto library,  shared storage and is the server where all of my macbooks write their time machine backups.  I have 4 macbooks in my house backing up to this server.
I am running the OSX Lion Client OS.  Performance is not great.  I find that I get jerky video performance when watching movies that reside on the Drobo.  In general the server seems slow.
My question is whether there is any benefit to upgrading to the OSX Lion server with regard to performance?  Or are there any other benefits to Lion Server considering what I am doing with it? I have no intention of hosting any wikis or sharing files with ipads or hosting web pages or any of those other functions of Lion server.
    Thanks

    great plan pointm!
VPN is a (almost) secure tunnel to your local network.
Doing it that way will simplify security and administration. Security will rest in VPN encription, and all the tests you run in your local office will work for your remote partners when they are connected to the VPN.
Throught VPN, the use of FTP or other insecure protocols is not potentially harmful, because they travel throught the VPN encripted/secure tunnel.
So finally, only VPN will be available from outside your local network.
This simplify the configuration of your firewall / router, and reduces the risk of having multiple services public on internet.
With this setup you'll also have all the magic that happens when two Mac's are on the same local network (bonjour, Network browsing, you know).
    regards! T

  • Has anyone got PPTP VPN to work on Lion Server?

Has anyone got PPTP VPN to work on Lion Server?
I had a go with the terminal commnds posted by apple support but no joy. Since then Apple has pulled the suport article - is it because it didn't work?
I get PPTP is less secure but PPTP seems to be more reliable don't know whey they can't keep as GUI. I've got them both running on our 10.4 server and L2TP stoped allowing connections for no reason PPTP was still working L2TP started working again on its own. Plus L2TP drops my connection when I connect with a 2nd device e.g connected with my Macbook connect with my iPhone (different username) it drops my Macbook.
Any advice getting PPTP to work on Lion Server would be appreciated
    Thanks
    Ben

    Hi,
I have posted a bugreport on this issue to Apple. Currently (10.7.2) it is not possible to run PPTP on any Mac OS X Server when using a 10.7 Server as Directory Server.
I have tried 'everything', but the MPPE encryption mechanism seems to be broken.
Edit: I see now that the bugreport is filed as a duplicate to an older case, which is now closed. I hope this means they have found the problem and will release a fix in the next update.

  • Where's the Mountain Lion Server Documentation?

Been waiting all day for Mountain Lion Server Documentation the be posted to no avail. What gives? Especially need the Mountain Lion Server Upgrading & Migrating manual. I help run a small educational cmoputer center in Santa Cruz CA and we need to transition from 10.5 Leopard Server on an old G5 Power Mac to 10.8 Mountain Lion Server on a new 2012 Mac mini as soon as it goes on sale. We particularly need the Workgroup Manager migration app documentation ASAP. Can any Apple employees explain why the Mountain Lion server documentation is not posted even though you can download the Mountain Lion Server since this morning?

Good Luck in Migrating from 10.5 Server to 10.8 Server... There's soo  many  changes..  Each time I've upgraded since 10.2.X server, I've always had to manual migrate things. Forget the automated upgraded process since it always hangs for me.
As for 10.6.8 Server, Apple changed the imap/pop server software from cyrus to dovecot. There's a script if I recall somewhere in 10.6.8 Server convert the imap mail of all the users.  However before you run that script I recommend that you rebuild the imap structure in cyrus before you do...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3120
as for mirgrating OD user.... archive the users...
    and import it...

  • How do I connect a pc to mac mini lion server?

Have recently purchased a mac mini lion server and have had no problem connecting macs in a small office. However, I can't for the life of me figure out how to connect the 2 PC's in our office...
I am not an IT person - doing this with complete ignorance!
    Any help much appreciated.
PS. I have enabled SMB on server, but still can't see the server on PC networks

    Hi frustrated,
    (I know what you mean...)
In any case, let me attempt to help you...
First of all, on the Lion Server machine (let's say this machine is named MyLionServer), open the Server app, click on File Sharing, and add the mount point you want to share.  Let's call this mount point Drobo (just in case you have a Drobo attached to your Lion Server), but it could be any folder or disk attached to your Lion Server machine or on your local network.  Edit the mount point share (highlight Drobo and click on pencil icon), and add the users (click + button and add the usernames) you wish to access the Drobo share, and how they access it (read only, read/write, etc.).  Also make sure to check the "Share with Windows clients (SMB)" button.  Click done and wait for the Server app to restart all of the file sharing servers.
Now for the Windows PC (I have just tested this myself on a PC running Windows XP Pro):
Click the "start" buttom, click "My Network Places".  In the My Network Places panel, click on the "Add a network place" button.  This brings up the "Add Network Place Wizard", highlight the "Choose another network location" and click "Next>".  In the Internet or network address box, add the following: "\\MyLionServer\Drobo" (yes, I know the slashes are backwards from what you normally use in the MacOS - also, the name Windows wants may have only the first character capitalized, as in "\\Mylionserver\Drobo"), then click the "Next>" botton, then click the "Finish" button.  The first time you perform this for the first share on your Lion Server, a window opens and asks for a username and password.  Enter one of the usernames and passwords that you gave read/write access to in the File Sharing panel for the Drobo mount point on your Lion Server.  This brings up a \\Mylionserver\Drobo window on your PC that is mounted to your Lion Server's Drobo.
    Hope this helps,
    Switon
P.S. As I said, I tried this out on my own PC as I was typing the instructions into this reply, and the above works for me.  But I did it on Windows XP Pro on a 6 year old PC laptop, and all machines and Windows OSes are different, so it will probably require you to do something slightly different from what I described above unless you just happen to be using Windows XP also.  Good luck.

  • Trouble getting pics from mac iphoto onto the cloud to they are viewable on the cloud or ipad, iphone itv etc.  i did try to change system pref in mac but there is no cloud there, only the old me logo, also the "ME" logo still shows on my tool bar on ipho

OK so I've recently placed some photos on iphoto that I would like to share with my other devices - ipad, iphone, apple tv.  There doesn't appear to be anywhere on the could for photos - so that is my first question.  My second question is how do I even get the photos from my mac into the cloud?  The system preferences for the mac instruct to update the cloud icon however my system is still showing the old MobileMe white cloud blue sky icon - not the current cloud.  The Mobile Me icon is inoperable.  So I've tried several times to drop ad drag, change preferences, nothing so far is working.  I've checked that I've got the latest software, running Mac OS X 10.6.8, ipad and iphone are similarly up to date.
    any help is appreciated.
    thanks
    Mike

You cannot use iCloud with 10.6.8; the minimum requirement is Lion 10.7.2 - this is a paid upgrade. The current system is Mountain Lion and if your Mac meets the requirements you can obtain it from the Mac App Store (in Applications). The requirements for Mountain Lion are listed here:
    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/
If you are compliant with Lion but not Mountain Lion you may be able to get Lion by ringing the Apple Store on the number at bottom left of this page. The requirements for Lion are
Mac computer with an Intel Core 2 Duo, Core i3, Core i5, Core i7, or Xeon processor
    2GB of memory
    OS X v10.6.6 or later (v10.6.8 recommended)
