Any user complaints re: OS X Mavericks. Why change from OS X 10.8.5?

See many user complaints re: OS X Mavericks. Why change from OS X 10.8.5?

Reasons to upgrade:
Mavericks is flawless on my mac.
Mavericks seems faster than 10.8.
iBooks
iCloud keychain (big plus: my passwords now sync between OSX and iOS).
There are a few things to be aware of before you install it, though:
Any new OS has some bugs and incompatibilities with old software and hardware. If you are uncomfortable with basic Mac troubleshooting, then perhaps waiting would be a better strategy. However, I didn't have any software issues with installation or after.
If you have any mission-critical software or peripherals, make sure they are compatible first.
Mavericks does not play well with some old/bad software:
Crapware: anything that purports to "clean", "monitor", "protect", or "accelerate"  your mac. Unnecessary on Macs and often harmful. Examples: CleanMyMac and MacKeeper (the King of Crapware).
antivirus software. Of dubious benefit on Macs.
"haxies": apps that change the appearance of the GUI.
The vast majority of disgruntled Mavericks-haters that post on this forum have crapware and antivirus software and other dreck on their macs that they are very reluctant to part with.
Mavericks does not play well with WD hard drives: this is because the software that comes on the drives, and the software that comes with the drives that WD wants you to install on your mac, and in some cases the firmware that is built into the enclosure of the external drive, are all incompatible with Mavericks. None of the software is necessary. If you have a WD drive, you should:
reformat (erase) it before you use it with a Mac
if you have installed WD software on your Mac, uninstall it. It's unnecessary anyway.
research it on line to see if it has the incompatible firmware on it. If it does, and you just bought it, I'd return it.
Before you install Mavericks, it's a good idea to:
have a good backup, like with Time Machine
make sure you have enough RAM. The specs say 2GB, but 4 is probably a more realistic minimum. If you do memory intensive work, you'll want more.
uninstall Crapware. This can be a problem because one of the hallmarks of crapware is that there is usually no uninstaller. It can also damage your OS and be difficult to uninstall completely. You may have to reformat (erase) your HD and do a clean install to completely get rid of it.
uninstall antivirus software and haxies.
repair your hard drive and permissions with Disk Utility
boot into safe mode, and then run the installer Mac OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?

Is there anything that spells out what fixes are in OS2 besides running Android Apps?
Specifically, I don't like that I can't access BB App World when I'm tethered to my phone vs needing WiFi.
There have been other complaints I've seen online.
    Thanks,

Yes, it will fix many of the complaints which I have read.
RIM has not released any specifics yet.

  • Why change from flash to flex?

    hi everyone
I'd like to know why is flex a better alternative to build
RIA applications then flash itself, because i can't find anywhere
the reasons to change, since flash can do almost anything that flex
can to, so please explain it to me. thanks

Let me try a short answer: I think Adobe targets two
different audiences with Flash and Flex: Flash is the authoring
tool for the design-oriented web artist. Flex on the other hand is
a powerful IDE for the application-oriented software developer.
Since both products share ActionScript and the SWF file format I'm
sure both sides will benefit from each other in the future.

  • 801.x WLANs authenticated via Radius and Active Directory permit any user access any WLAN

    Hi,
I have configured several WLANs with WPA2 and 8021.x which authenticate users through Radius server (Windows Internet authentication service) that conects with an Active Directory, into the AD exists one user group for each WLAN but the problem is that any user that was added to some group can get access to any WLAN, does anyboby know if I need some configuraion on the WLC to restric that?
    thanks for your help.

    Hi Scott,
I have done some test modifying the Radius Policy to look at called station ID and test too looking at the NAS-ID, In the first case, I change the Call Station ID Type into WLC RADIUS Authentication Servers configuration to AP MAC Address:SSID and AP Name:SSID and into the Radius Server using .*:SSID-NAME$ and SSID-NAME$ ,but it blocks access for any user. In the second case, I change the NAS-ID into WLC WLAN and interface confguration and into the radius server Policy to match all, but it doesn´t have any impact, what other test could I try?
    thanks for your help.

  • Why may any user leave background processes running at will?

    Hi all,
yesterday, I encountered a rather strange problem with linux in common, at least
    I think so.
In my .xinitrc, I'm starting offlineimap - a console-based mail synchronization
tool - in the background. Being naive, I expected it to be killed along with the
gui applications started in that file. Yet, that assumption proved wrong and I
started asking for help on how to kill that process on #archlinux.
The guys there (again, thanks for your help and patience!) all came up with
plenty of ideas on how to avoid starting more than once instance of the program,
but that wasn't really what I was looking for. The only usable option came from
anrxc, who suggested killing the program from awesome's logout hooks.
Not fully satisfied with the solutions, I started thinking and came up with the
    following question:
Why is every user allowed to leave background processes on the machine
just as he pleases, even if he logs out?
I even tried this over ssh, where the launched commands have some sort of
"parent" process, but even in this circumstance it was possbible to leave
background processes behind after logging out.
I mean, on my desktop system, this is not a big issue... I shut it down once
every day at the least and there are no users on it besides my girlfriend and
me. But this seems like a fundamental problem to me. Why is this allowed at all?
Does it make sense to do it that way? What are the consequences?
    Let's discuss!

JohannesSM64 wrote:Really, you need to find a better way to manage offlineimap than starting it in xinitrc. Automatically killing any background processes on any logout will not make linux better.
Hmm... to me, .xinitrc is the place to start apps which should live just as long
as the graphical user login lasts. On #archlinux, several other places were
discussed, but none of them were "the thing":
    .bashrc
Doesn't work, because a) the process would only get started when I open a shell,
not when I log in and b) because finding a place to stop the process would be
    even harder.
    .bash-profile
Only gets executed for a login shell, which I wouldn't account for a graphical
    login at all.
wm startup script (in this case awesome's rc.lua)
Possbile, but not much better. Would fork the process all the same, merely
moving the problem. If X got killed, not even awesome's logout hooks would
    apply.
Also, this approach isn't wm-agnostic, so trying out / switching to another wm
would have the problem occur all over again.
So what do you suggest? Do you have a good idea?
    pseudonomous wrote:
As to the question of "why" things act this way:
I believe this is linux display it's heritage as a mulit-user operating system that people used terminals to log into to run program on.  A big place where unix used to be (and is, to some degree, still used) was in universities where a professor or graduate student might have logged onto the system to run some program to process some large set of data.  You wouldn't want to sit around and wait for this program to finish; you'd want to run it in the background, leave, and come back and look at the results a week later, when the program finished running.  One of my friends doing applied math research still does this sort of thing.  I'd imagine it's relatively common.
Process management was largely handled be systems administrators, and commonly you were being billed for CPU time, so it was in your interest not to leave programs that you didn't want to run running when you logged out.
Hmmm... that seems like a rational explanation. But in the case that is the
reason for linux' behavior: Why isn't there some kind of a mode setting? Like
one which allows any user to keep processes alive and another one that doesn't?

  • Any advice on where to start when troubleshhoting a slow network (users complaints)?

We currently have users from one of our branch office that complains around network performance issues (slow network). Troubleshooting issues like this one was not the focus of my CCENT studies (got certified 2 weeks ago) but I was assigned that ticket last Friday (first assignment). I was thinking to call one of the users and ask him to connect on another computer to see if he still encounters the same issue (that would tell me if it is related to his computer or not - probably layer 1, 2 issue), ask him to try another application (to help determine if it is a Layer 7 issue) and then if it is not related to neither one of these I was thinking to start looking at the switch interface to which the computer is connected to. I would like to know if someone could tell me if I am on the right path and what else I should verify/investigate? Are there root cause analysis tools that exist to help solve/troubleshoot such issues?
    Thanks in advanced.

This is a pretty wide open question, and could be caused by a myriad of things. I'm going to make a couple of assumptions (yeah, I know, make an ass out of you and umption) such as the branch office is linked to head office by soem kind of dedicated link, and uses that dedicated link for internet access via the head office instead of having a local internet link. You may not have this, but the process should be similar - just the weight of the diagnosis of different stages may be different.
First off, get the user to define "slow". Compare the expectations of the user to the actual infrastructure at the site - if he's expecting a 10 MB/s download rate from the internet (100 mb/s) and you've only got a T1 or E1 link (1.5 mb/s), then it doesn;t matter WHAT you do, he's going to complain it's "slow".
Then move to the basics. Have the PC's investigated. Are they connected at the rate you expect? 100 Mb/s? 1 gig? Full duplex? The most common problem I've seen of this type is incorrect duplex negotiation - PC thinks it's full fuplex, switch thinks it's half duplex, and the result is lots of dropped packets and retries, resulting in "slow" connections almost everywhere. There's also the possibility of speed auto negotiation failing - something capable of 1 gig negotiating 10 Mb/s makes a *big* difference, especially if it's internal infrastructure being accessed.
Do some PING tests - ping a known local host - the local default router, for example - and see what kind of RTT you get. Then ping a known "intra" company host - one which is within the company but not on the local branch office site. What kind of RTT's do you get there? Finally, test a known external site - www.google.com, or a public DNS like the one at 4.2.2.2 - what kind of PING RTT's do you get to them?
Then traceroute - do the same ting, and look for weird hops, or really slow responses - is the workstation getting hooked up on something, protocol-wise, which does a reverse lookup (SSH is a classic example) before accepting connections - and when the RDNS doesn't exist, it "pauses" for several seconds.
Then it gets complex - start looking into the routers involved, and check for dropped packets or errors in the log. Check with the link provider and ask them if they see any errors on the link.
Where you go from there depends really on what you find up to now. ISP, management to, erm, educate the user to the realities of life in remote locations, or maybe you've actually got some faulty hardware somewhere you need to fix. You never know, it does happen! :-)
    Good luck.
    Cheers.

  • Any word on a replacement for mavericks

I'm wondering if anyone has heard any word about a replacement for Mavericks. Even after this long using it I still think it is a really poor os. If it were not such a chore I woud revert back to Mountain lion or Snow Leopard.

No one here has any idea of when Apple will release the next version of OS X.
I have found Mavericks to be significatantly better then its preciessors.
Maybe if you tell us why you think Mavericks is worst, we might be able to help you.

  • CISCOWORKS LMS and CISCOSECURE ACS Authenticate any user with HD role

    Hi:
We are using CiscoSecure for authentication and authorization for differente apps.
Specifically, any user already in the ACS database is authenticated to log in CiscoWorks LMS, with HD role (this happens although none of the CiscoWorks apps have been checked for this group).
    Why is this happening?
We don´t want that any user (although they are only permitted the HD role) could login.
    Thanks a lot
    Julio

Follow the ACS integration guide to ensure the group you don't want to have access to LMS have the roles set to "NONE" instead of the default HD roles.

  • WLC-4402 : Users complaint slow down load

    Hello
My users complaint the down load speed is slow when using wireless.  I checked and indeed is slow.
Before this happen, my WLC is running 802.11b/g.  So my thought maybe the 802.11b can slow down
on the users so I changed WLAN to run on 802.11g only.  Well, it is still slow.  If anyone has any idea
    on this is appreciated.
The WLC-4402 is running on version 4.1.185 and all 19 LAPs is 1242AG with IOS version 12.4(3g)JA2

    OUCH...

Do your APs have 802.11a radios? If so, move your asscoation to the 802.11a side and run your test... Your channel utlization is high, very high. I assume you have 1 PHY rate set to mandatory and lower data rates are enabled 1,2,5.5 ?
Lets clean up the utilization first and see the results before you go further...

  • Error while provisioning resource object to any user

I get below error while trying to provision or reconcile any user to AD resource object. This was working fine till yesterday and suddenly started behaving otherwise.
This error occurs while provisioning to the user i.e., as we de-selected auto save option on the process definition, it does not show up the process form while manually provisioning the resource instead show DOBJ.UPDATE_FAILED error on the web console.
I tried provisioning the resource by removing all the pre-populate adapters from the process form with no luck
This is on OIM 9.1.0.2 BP12
Has anyone faced similar issue before or any pointers to resolve this ??

    Hello
You can get user id using select v('APP_USER') FROM DUAL or simply :APP_USER.

  • Running a dashboard report by any user based off another user's ID

    Good Afternoon,
Im looking for some help on how to setup a dashboard so that a person can view a specific number of other users sale information by selecting their ID. This is how our dashboard works today. We have several reports that run for our supply chain that pull misc data from backorders to open PO's. The way they work today is each report is setup with a filter called 'Buyers'. That buy filter is setup with the statement UserID.UserID = @variable'BOUSERS'. Our UserID is mapped to our CustomerTable where the UserID = CustomerID and accountType = 'BUY'. So if the BO user runs the report and they have the accounttype 'BUY' it pulls their ID which is also their buyer number and returns the data based off their buyer #. For example: if Im a buyer with # 9901, when the report is ran it take my bo login TMH111 - jumps to customer table and compares my bo login with my customerid and pulls my buyer information using the 9901. What we would like to do is give this dashboard more flexibility so that if I am not a user with a buyer ID, I can go into the dashboard and SELECT the buyer ID I want to pull data for and since the rest of the reports are linked to a single report showing the buyer number I could see any buyers report data vs having to BE the buyer logging in to see the data associated with my buyer ID. I apologize if this is a little confusing.
So the ultimate goal is to be able to as any dashboard user, open the dashboard and select a buyer # from the "My Buyer #" block and the rest of the reports on the dashboard would update showing that buyers data.
I have attached a picture of the dashboards setup. You'll noticed there is a small block called "My Buyer Number" all the other blocks would need to be linked to that specific report and show the data for the number selected there. You'll noticed the top left block called "$ on hand" on this report I have removed that Buyer Filter (so its unfortunately returning a SUM of all the buyers information).
We're using BO Edge XI 3.1

    Hi Tiffany,
    Case1)
If i understood your scenario,You can use prompts in your reports, and based on your prompts reply your dashboard will get the required information and you can show that information in your Dashboard.
Required: Prompts for selection in the reports.
Case2)You can restrict the data by giving conditions to required objects for  all the users.
Schedule the reports and the respected user's wise data you can show in the dashboard.
Here you need to fix the user level restrictions means run time you cannot pass user level restrictions as selections.Since you are going with the scheduling reports.
    Required:Profiles and Publications in BO
