Any advice on where to start when troubleshhoting a slow network (users complaints)?

We currently have users from one of our branch office that complains around network performance issues (slow network). Troubleshooting issues like this one was not the focus of my CCENT studies (got certified 2 weeks ago) but I was assigned that ticket last Friday (first assignment). I was thinking to call one of the users and ask him to connect on another computer to see if he still encounters the same issue (that would tell me if it is related to his computer or not - probably layer 1, 2 issue), ask him to try another application (to help determine if it is a Layer 7 issue) and then if it is not related to neither one of these I was thinking to start looking at the switch interface to which the computer is connected to. I would like to know if someone could tell me if I am on the right path and what else I should verify/investigate? Are there root cause analysis tools that exist to help solve/troubleshoot such issues?
Thanks in advanced.

This is a pretty wide open question, and could be caused by a myriad of things. I'm going to make a couple of assumptions (yeah, I know, make an ass out of you and umption) such as the branch office is linked to head office by soem kind of dedicated link, and uses that dedicated link for internet access via the head office instead of having a local internet link. You may not have this, but the process should be similar - just the weight of the diagnosis of different stages may be different.
First off, get the user to define "slow". Compare the expectations of the user to the actual infrastructure at the site - if he's expecting a 10 MB/s download rate from the internet (100 mb/s) and you've only got a T1 or E1 link (1.5 mb/s), then it doesn;t matter WHAT you do, he's going to complain it's "slow".
Then move to the basics. Have the PC's investigated. Are they connected at the rate you expect? 100 Mb/s? 1 gig? Full duplex? The most common problem I've seen of this type is incorrect duplex negotiation - PC thinks it's full fuplex, switch thinks it's half duplex, and the result is lots of dropped packets and retries, resulting in "slow" connections almost everywhere. There's also the possibility of speed auto negotiation failing - something capable of 1 gig negotiating 10 Mb/s makes a *big* difference, especially if it's internal infrastructure being accessed.
Do some PING tests - ping a known local host - the local default router, for example - and see what kind of RTT you get. Then ping a known "intra" company host - one which is within the company but not on the local branch office site. What kind of RTT's do you get there? Finally, test a known external site - www.google.com, or a public DNS like the one at 4.2.2.2 - what kind of PING RTT's do you get to them?
Then traceroute - do the same ting, and look for weird hops, or really slow responses - is the workstation getting hooked up on something, protocol-wise, which does a reverse lookup (SSH is a classic example) before accepting connections - and when the RDNS doesn't exist, it "pauses" for several seconds.
Then it gets complex - start looking into the routers involved, and check for dropped packets or errors in the log. Check with the link provider and ask them if they see any errors on the link.
Where you go from there depends really on what you find up to now. ISP, management to, erm, educate the user to the realities of life in remote locations, or maybe you've actually got some faulty hardware somewhere you need to fix. You never know, it does happen! :-)
Good luck.
Cheers.

That's the "gldAttachDrawable" crash in the NVidia graphics driver. It was supposed to have been fixed in 10.6.8. If you're still seeing it, you may need to download the 10.6.8 combo updater from the Apple Support site and apply it. It's also possible that you have a faulty graphics card. Reinstalling Safari will not help.

  • HT3819 My new Apple TV works fine but turns off Home sharing at regular intervals. This requires me to re-enter my itunes password and start over again. It is not my computer. I've checked and home share is still on in itunes. Any advice on where I should

I just installed Apple TV. Works fine but turrns itself off at regular intervals of about 30 minutes. This requires me to re-enter my Apple ID and re-start all over again. Wjen I check iTunes on my computer, home sharing is still turned on. THis leads me to think the problem is in how I configured Apple TV on my HDTV. Any advice on where I should look?
    THanks in advance.

I have had no luck. After an hour with phone tech support I have re-installed the current Apple TV software update., re-booted the entire system three times., checked each of my two Airport Express's.,unplugged and re[plugged in every cable,  ad infinitum, ad nauseum and still no luck. I have also decided iTunes 11 *****. Not near as intuitive especially with regard to moving stuff around between my playlists, etc.
Alright guys, is this a problem because of iTunes 11? Is Apple releasing stuff before adequate debugging? Did Steve take his high standards with him?

Delete any items in System Preferences > Users & Groups (or Accounts) > Login Items
Same for  HD > Library > StartupItems
Not enough free space on the startup disk can slow the system down.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon on your Deskop.
Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available.
Make sure there's a minimum of 15% free disk space.

On my home network the wi-fi connection happens automatically without opening Safari. But on my work network, when attempting to make a connection the iPad lets me enter my user name and password, but then tries to open the webpage www.apple.com, which is blocked by iPrism as entertainment, so I can't actually connect to that network. oes anyone know a fix for this problem?

Good luck!  The Chase card should be top priority as its unpaid balance goes against your UTI, making it harder to get FICO points for keeping your balances low. Since you paid Cap One more than two years ago, get back in with them - they are a much better CC lender than Predator One. Kick those vultures to the curb.

  • ABAP OO - Any tips on where to start?

    Hi all,
we are in 6.40 and I have read Jovelyn's blogs on ABAP OO.
We are now ready to start developing the workflow and I am a bit unsure about how to get started...
The workflows are for HR business processes. A few questions:
1 - If anyone told me they were about to start developing workflows for HR, I would immediatley suggest that BUS1065 and EMPLOYEET would be used. If we are going to used ABAP OO, can anyone give me a hint about which classes are normally required? e.g. you will need one to represent the employee, another one to represent position, etc
2-  I would rather not have to replicate BUS1065 / EMPLOYEET in a new class; I am aware that we can reference BOR objects in ABAP OO classes but I don't know how to do it or how to use it.
3 - I noticed several classes CL_HRPA_INFOTYPE_*. I am assuming they represent the several Infotypes delivered in HR. Any hints about how to 'test' these classes - I didn't quite grasped yet how to 'test' these classes - I am trying!
4 - If I want to use CL_HRPA_INFOTYPE_* in my workflows, I need to add IF_WORKFLOW interface. How to do that? Do I say that CL_HRPA_INFOTYPE_* is a Superclass and add the interface IF_WORKFLOW in my ZCL_HRPA_INFOTYPE_*?
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.
I really want to start using ABAP OO in my workflows, but feeling really unsure about how to do it!
    Cristiana

Thanks Mike, I am still septical about going for ABAP Classes - I know it is the direction that SAP wants to go, but with so little information about how to do it properly, I am afraid of doing more harm than good.
You suggested that I should use a BO as an attribute of a class. So, are you suggesting that a should create a class called ZCL_EMPLOYEET, assign the BO EMPLOYEET as an attribute type SIBFLPORB and add any extra bits and pieces that I need in class ZCL_EMPLOYEET?
Have you worked with classes CL_HRPA_INFOTYPE_*. I am assuming they represent the several Infotypes delivered in HR. Any hints about how to 'test' these classes - I didn't quite grasped yet how to 'test' these classes - I would like to see what they do, but I am not getting it.
Thanks for any help you can provide,
    Regards,
    Cristiana

  • Office 2008 for Mac: Any advice on where to get it cheaper for a student?

I am about to go into my Master's Degree at Dallas Theological Seminary and I need to get Office 2008 for Mac. The Apple store recommended me get it at my school but my school's bookstore does not have it and journeyed.com doesn't support DTS. Does anyone know how or where I can get this program for less than $100 with a student discount? I really need to know.

    Remember... Google is your friend.

  • I need second T61 as backup :: Any advice on where to buy?

My current T61, which I love, is suggesting to me that it might be going south someday (one long 2 short beeps that I so far have recovered from).
It looks like my cheapest and happiest option would be a use or refurbished T61 since I can move my SDD and 8GB of Ram and Windows 7 CD install and Office 2010 CD install over to it.
I see used/refurbished ones for sale on Amazon and would like this forum's input on sellers, yada yada.
This forum has been so helpful to me over the years.
I saw Tampa Laptops who have a great rating selling a T60. Is this too far different from a T61 and can I move my stuff over to it?
    Faithfully standing by.

    Hey thanks.
I ran that route and ended up buying a T61p from Tampa Labtops. There were several reviews on Amazon praising them. So I didn't see any T61's in their Amazon Inventory so I emailed them and they got back to me with 3 choices.
Here is the first email I got from them:
    John,
We do have a few Lenovo T61 laptops in stock, both the 14" and 15" versions actually.  We can do 2.2ghz/2gb/80gb/DVD+CDRW/Win7 Home Premium 32 or 64 bit OS whichever you prefer, for 185 for the 14" and 195 for the 15"
Also: Lenovo T61p that is in pristine condition.  It has a 2.4ghz processor, 4gb of RAM, 100gb HD, Windows 7 Pro and the Nvidia Quadro FX 570m graphics card.  It is 15.4" and I can let you have that for $249.
    Please let us know.
    Thank you,

    =============================
So I bought the $249 T61p, plan to move my SDD and RAM over to it. He offered to take out the RAM for $25 less, and on the cheaper ones to take off Windows 7and HD for $29 less I think.
I decided to keep everything intact and we agreed he send it for $19 more 3 day delivery. Should be here tomorrow or next day oh joy oh rapture.
Current T61 is now working again but I believe TuuS that it might only be temporary.

  • Application won`t start - starts when logged in as another user

An application created by Unity doesn`t start. When I double click (or right mouse click and choose `open`) nothing happens. However, when I log in as another user, or when I try to run the same program from a flash drive, it works. I tried a lot, including repairing permissions, but nothing helped.
    Thanks in advance !

Try logging into your user while holding down the shift key on your keyboard, to supress any startup items that may be interfering with your program.
If that does not do it, look for a preference file in you user folder by choosing the Go menu from the Finder and selecting Go to Folder and enter ~/Library/Preferences and checking for files having to do with your application. If there are any, move them to your desktop and try again.
If that does not fix it, move them back, replacing the new ones that will be built. Also, if your program uses any data files or libraries when started up, try removing those. Again, if not fixed, put them back.

  • Premiere Pro CS6 opening slow when connected to slow network.

I recently setup a user with his computer running behind a VPN router so that he could work from home. The VPN router is used to give him access to local resources.
A strange thing started to happen with Premiere where it would be very slow to open. Either it hangs on the splash screen for a few seconds to a few minutes or the splash screen loads normally but when the program opens, it is just white for a few minutes until it finally opens. If I try to click on the program Windows tells me that the program is not responding. Being that the premiere was working fine before putting the PC behind the VPN router, I feel like it had to be a network thing. I had the user momentarily unplug the Ethernet cable from the router and Premiere loaded up quick like it normally does. So when Premiere opens, it must be trying to access some local resources.
The problem is I cannot figure out what that is. I went through all of the preferences and nothing is set to use a network resource. Media cache is set to us a local SSD. What else could Premeire be trying to access to launch?

Premiere communicates with Adobe as it opens. I'm assuming it is verifying that you have an active account/aren't pirating the software. On my computer the maximum bandwidth usage is 1Mbps (that's bit not byte), so unless your VPN is incredibly slow, this probably isn't the issue. Maybe there's some firewall interaction that is limiting Premiere's ability to talk to Adobe as it launches?

  • Applications crash when signed on as network users

All users are reporting that when logged on with their network account (we are using home folders/roaming profiles) at some time or another, programs will crash or freeze up on them and then will not open when trying to re-launch.  I'm experiencing probably 3-4 occurrences daily for different users.  I’ve seen it happen to safari, notes, mail (internet accounts), open office, wave and ilog.  My fix for it has been to go into the user’s library folder and delete the appropriate folder pertaining to the program that crashed.  For example if it happens to Notes, I go into ~\Library\containers and delete com.apple.notes or if it happens to open office, I go into ~\Library\application support and delete OpenOffice. After which, the library directory is recreated once the program is launch again and it seems to work from there.  I haven’t been able to track down the correct data folder for each application so in some cases, I have deleted the user altogether and recreated the account.
This issue is definitely tied to the user account because if they move workstations, the problem follows and does not happen when signed on with a local account.  The work around to this point is users are resorting to signing on with a local account and working from there.  I have been unable to determine a common occurrence that precedes this happening so I’m not really sure what’s causing it.
Although we are running Mavericks on all systems including the server and server version 3, this issue existed on previous OS X versions.
    Any help is appriciated.

Did you run Disk Utility> Repair Permissions after installing the HP driver software? While Repair Permissions may no longer be a useful as it was as a generic troubleshooting step under OS X 10.2.x, it's still essential if you have any third-party software that requires an administrative password to install, especially HP or Adobe software, which are known to trample around placing files with mis-set permissions all over the place.

  • DataSocket Server will not start when the Launch DS Server if Local URL.VI is bundled into a LabVIEW application.

I want to run a LabVIEW application on several machines remotely that do not have LabVIEW installed (licensing issues). Hence I have built a LabVIEW executable with the RunTime Engine to install on all of these remote machines.
The VI has a bi-directional link, using Datasockets, to a machine with DAQ and Image acquisition functions. It primarily receives data items, but also the capability to change data items so it needs to run the "Launch DS Server if Local URL.VI" in order to publish data to the DataSocket server.
When I run the pre-built VI on a machine that has LabVIEW Developers Edition installed, everything works fine - ie.
the DataSocket server starts on the remote machine. However when I build the *.exe application and run it on a machine with and without LabVIEW Developers Edition installed the VI successfully subscribes to the DAQ and Image Acquisiton machine, but it does not start its own connection to the Data Socket server, and hence does not publish the data that the DAQ machine needs to suscribe to. IT seems that the Launch DS Server if Local URL.VI is bypassed? I have fiddled around with the Build settings but to no avail.
In short, how do I get the DataSocket Server to run in a LabVIEW executable? Is it indeed possible? Any advice would be welcomed.
When distributing a Labview Application (*.exe) with Data Socket Server Publish functionality, the DataSocket server does not start and hence no data can be sent by the Remote PC to the Server. The VI successfully retrieves data from the DS Server. I have used the "Launch DS Server if Local URL.vi" in the ditributed application but for some r
eason this VI is not executed when I run the executable. How can you force the DataSocket Server to run with executable LabVIEW applications?

    Ryan,
How to add Datasocket Server Control.vi?
Source Files only show Project Files.
So, I added Datasocket Server Control.vi file to the project first.
Then I added it to Always Included < Source Files < Application Properties (Build Executable).
Last, I built the Executable, but it didn't work.
    Can you help me.
    Thank you.

  • I have Labview 5.0 and I can't run a program it gives me a runrime error C++ relating to the Labview exe file. Do you know where to start to fix this?

I've had this version for quite a long time and haven't had any problems with it. When I start Labview normally it seems to work fine I can look at individual Vi's and such but when I go to start a Vi program or even the tutorial it gives me a "Runtime error message C++
C:\Program File\National Instruments\LabView\LabView.exe  abnmormal program termination." I'm not sure if it is a computer problem DAQ card (PCI 6023E) problem or a software glich. If you have any ideas of where to start tracking this down please let me know ASAP. It is a work stoppage situation.
    Thanks for your consideration
