Any way to synchronize without creating file on server

Is there any way to setup Dreamweaver (DW) MX 2004 and 8 so
that the Synchronize feature does NOT need to create a file on the
server? For my website, I have individual folders under the
document root folder that I give write access to various staff in
my organization who then use DW to maintain their web pages in
their folder. I do not give them write access to the document root
however as I don't want them accidentally deleting someone else's
folder (the server is Unix running Apache).
The problem with all of this is that they can't use
Synchronize in DW MX 2004 (and version 8 as well I believe) because
DW creates a file in the document root folder on the server to
determine the date/time on the server, but I don't give them write
access to this folder.
Is there any way to setup DW to get the date/time on the
server without needing write access to the document root of the
server (for example, maybe specify in each copy of DW where to
attempt to create the file)? If not, then PLEASE, PLEASE consider
changing this for the next version of DW.

David,
I just tested this with Dreamweaver (DW) 8 and it does NOT
work.
If I make the document root (i.e., the top folder on the
server that corresponds to my website) unwriteable by a particular
user, they can't synchronize. I tested this by creating a new
sub-folder on the server and putting a test file in that folder
(called test.html), created the same sub-folder on the users local
machine in their site definition and then tried synchronizing. Only
when I give them write permission to the document root folder can
they synchronize - otherwise, DW 8 says that there is nothing to
synchronize.
Any ideas what's going on? As I stated previously, I don't
give write permission to the document root folder for the majority
of the users on my web server, I just give most of them write
permission to specific sub-folders underneath the root folder. As
it stands now, none of them can use synchronize which is one of the
key features they would like to use in Dreamweaver.

    Is there any way to embed the pdf file in the book created in iBooks Author to make it available to be downloaded or sent to email?
    I'm making the book for children and there is one chapter providing coloring pages. So I wish to attach pdf files that allow users to download it at the end of chapter so that  they can print it out. Been searching through discussion, I've found some advice about taking screen snapshot page-by-page > then send the pics from photo album to email. However, I'm wondering if there's a way that make the process easier.

    Warehouse that PDF on your own server, then link to it from your book.

  • Import photos without copying? I Have thousands of photos on a hard drive separate from my mac and i dont have enough space on my mac to copy them to. Any way to import without copying to the local hard drive?

    Import photos without copying? I Have thousands of photos on a hard drive separate from my mac and i dont have enough space on my mac to copy them to. Any way to import without copying to the local hard drive?

    Yes, but you might want to think carefully about it.
    A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing. The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.
    This is an attractive option for some users at face value, but it contains a significant number of issues that you might want to consider before making the decision to run a Referenced Library
    How to do it:
    iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced and uncheck the box at 'Copy items to the iPhoto Library'
    Now when you import iPhoto makes an alias in the Library Package that points to the stored file. Note: iPhoto still creates a thumbnail of the image and it makes a Preview of edited photos inside the Library Package.
    Issues?
    1. You are responsible for file management. That's more work:
    You must first move the files from your camera to the storage location before importing.
    If you want to delete files then you must first trash them from iPhoto and then afterwards find them in your storage and trash them.
    Thereafter, you cannot move the files on early versions of iPhoto at all, on iPhoto 08 and later you may move them on the same Volume or Disk. If you move them to a new volume or disk the aliases my break. If they are on an different volume and you move them the aliases will break.
    You cannot rename the files.
    Migrating: moving to a new machine, moving the files to another disk are all a lot more complex.
    2. You gain no extra functionality from running a Referenced Library. Nothing. This is just storage. You still manage the files via iPhoto. You edit them with iPhoto or via iPhoto's External Editor setting, otherwise you're changes will not be available in iPhoto. You don't save  byte of storage space.
    3.  If you have the Library on one volume and the photos on another you if anything changes in the path to a file (Like if you upgrade your machine, move the files on the NAS or on to another one?) then the alias will break, and you'll have to repair it manually. For every photo in the Library. One at a time.
    Why do you want to run a Referenced Library?
    Because my photos won't fit on my HD?
    You can run a Managed library from an external disk. Make sure the drive is formatted Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
    1. Quit iPhoto
    2. Copy the iPhoto Library from your Pictures Folder to the External Disk.
    3. Hold down the option (or alt) key while launching iPhoto. From the resulting menu select 'Choose Library' and navigate to the new location. From that point on this will be the default location of your library.
    4. Test the library and when you're sure all is well, trash the one on your internal HD to free up space.
    You're worried about accessing the files?
    There are many, many ways to access your files in iPhoto:   You can use any Open / Attach / Browse dialogue. On the left there's a Media heading, your pics can be accessed there. Command-Click for selecting multiple pics.
    (Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
    You can access the Library from the New Message Window in Mail:
    There's a similar option in Outlook and many, many other apps.  If you use Apple's Mail, Entourage, AOL or Eudora you can email from within iPhoto.
    If you use a Cocoa-based Browser such as Safari, you can drag the pics from the iPhoto Window to the Attach window in the browser.
    If you want to access the files with iPhoto not running:
    For users of 10.6 and later:  You can download a free Services component from MacOSXAutomation  which will give you access to the iPhoto Library from your Services Menu.
    Using the Services Preference Pane you can even create a keyboard shortcut for it.
    For Users of 10.4 and 10.5 Create a Media Browser using Automator (takes about 10 seconds) or use this free utility Karelia iMedia Browser
    Other options include:
    Drag and Drop: Drag a photo from the iPhoto Window to the desktop, there iPhoto will make a full-sized copy of the pic.
    File -> Export: Select the files in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Export. The dialogue will give you various options, including altering the format, naming the files and changing the size. Again, producing a copy.
    Show File:  a. On iPhoto 09 and earlier:  Right- (or Control-) Click on a pic and in the resulting dialogue choose 'Show File'. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.    3.b.
    b: On iPhoto 11 and later: Select one of the affected photos in the iPhoto Window and go File -> Reveal in Finder -> Original. A Finder window will pop open with the file already selected.

    It was bought for my son and he never registered it.
    I still don't understand why Neema was trying to reinstall it when she didn't have the serial number but after she uninstalled it, said she couldn't reinstall it because I didn't have the serial number.  I never had it yet she didn't have a problem with trying to install it originally.
    Still won't buy another Adobe product again.  I've talked to a lot of people who can't stand Adobe and I now know why.  I can't even update Flash without my whole system crashing or getting a virus.
    I won't re-purchase InDesign either.  I realize it should have been registered and I explained that my email had been hacked and my proof of purchase was deleted with ALL of my emails and I also had a major virus after updating Flash.
    I can't afford to buy the same product twice.
    I will find out what other formats my book distributor (Ingram Books) accepts and purchase that program.
    Not impressed with Adobe and will share my experience with others so they can be sure to register their product and make a copy of the program BEFORE allowing an Adobe employee to take control of their computers.
    If you knew the answer to my question, customer support should have too.
    Thanks for your help.

    I can think of two possible stumbling blocks:
    What are your 8.6 options for "byte order" and "prepend array or string size"?
    Overall, many file IO functions have changed with LabVIEW 8.0, so there might not be an exact 1:1 code conversion. You might need to make some modifications. For example, in 7.1, you should use "write file", the "binary file VIs" are special purpose (I16 or SGL). What is your data type?

  • Any way of getting Real Media files to play in Front Row?

    I was just wondering if there is any way to get Real Media files to play in Front Row? I realise this is probably not possible, but I thought I'd ask people who know more about this than me!!
    I do have Real Player installed if that helps......

    Probably not right now. Since Front Row uses iPhoto to play slideshows, the DVD Player to play DVDs, iTunes to play MP3s and the QuickTime Player to play videos, there's no way now to change the default video player application. All of those connections are hard-wired into the software. Apple has not released any kind of SDK (software development kit) for third parties to add on to Front Row, so it would have to be an unauthorized hack to get another video player to run. I might suggest you send Apple some Mac OS X feedback and let them know you'd like to see third party add-ons to Front Row.

  • Is there any way we can save PDF files of 1.8v & 1.9v to 1.4v using plug-in?

    is there any way we can save PDF files of 1.8v & 1.9v to 1.4v using plug-in? (using PDDocSavePara )

    Something like this.
    Change VER variable to version number as you need. ex. VER = 7 -> PDF 1.7
    pdoc = AVDocGetPDDoc(avDoc);
    PDDocSaveParams saveParams;
    unsigned char buffer[sizeof(_t_PDDocSaveParams)];
    saveParams = (PDDocSaveParams)buffer;
    memset(saveParams, 0, sizeof(_t_PDDocSaveParams));
    saveParams->fileSys = ASGetDefaultFileSys();
    saveParams->major = 1;
    saveParams->minor = VER;  //change version here
    saveParams->saveFlags = PDSaveFull | PDSaveCollectGarbage | PDSaveForceIncremental | PDSaveKeepModDate;
    saveParams->size = sizeof (_t_PDDocSaveParams);
    saveParams->saveFlags2 = PDSaveUncompressed;
    PDDocSaveWithParams (pdoc, saveParams);

  • Is there any way to import the PST file to Thunderbird

    My boss used Outlook 2010 to store all his emails. Is there any way to import the PST file to Thunderbird so he can access them from a new computer?
    Thunderbird cannot be installed on the old computer and Outlook is not on the new computer. All information is saved in a PST file on our local backup.
    Alternatively, is there a way to convert to a file type that CAN be imported? This is a 5GB file. (I know, I KNOW, but I cannot convince him he doesn't need all of these emails.)

    Does he use an e-mail provider with sufficient mailbox space? In that case, you can move the e-mail back to the server and download it using Thunderbird.
    This only works when you configure the e-mail account with IMAP (not POP3).
    Hope this helps.

    Take it to the Apple Store
    Confess the error of your ways with the soaking of your iPhone
    Ask them to check it out
    They will charge you $229

  • Does anyone know if there's any way to find out what files in my Library

         Does anyone know if there's any way to find out what files in my Library I can delete? I just cleaned off my HD onto a media drive as a back up so all my movies documents and photos are gone but my Library seems to be a huge space hog eating sixty gigs of space and I do have alot of apps but they don't take up a third of that space... Any ideas how I can figure out what is wasting all this space? I had Spring Cleaning once but found it to be rather confusing as to what was essential to the OS and what not...
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Get free OmniDisk Sweeper. I can't imagine how you could have sixty GB in that folder. My entire ~Library isn't even 1GB. Are you sure you're not talking about your entire Home folder?
    Can you post a screenshot of the contents of that folder.
    Check again. Are you sure you moved all the Movies etc. out? Could have left duplicates of everything behind when you did this.

  • Is there any way to keep all firefox files and settings in a specified place?

    I recently put a version of firefox on a flash drive for when using public computers so I can always have the custom settings and addons available. But the inherent problem is that firefox puts files in the documents and settings folder on the computer, and sometimes the computer will not allow any files to be put in the directory and firefox will not run there. Is there any way to confine all the files in the same place short of putting the whole operating system on there?

    You can use the portable Firefox version that comes with its own profile on the flash drive.

  • Is there any way to eliminate the locked file function in iWork apps?

    Hi, I recently added Lion to my Mac. Is there any way to eliminate the "locked file" function. I do not use iCloud or Time Machine on my Mac. Thanks. Bob

    I don't use Time Machine either but the option for this function is in the Time Machine options.
    Open System Preferences > Time Machine
    Click 'Options'
    The bottom option should be about auto-saving. To stop applications from locking documents, uncheck the box. To extend the peiod before the document is locked, select the appropriate time from the drop-down menu.
    Hope that;s what you wanted!

  • IMovie '08 freezes up...any way to save backup working files?

    I'm really frustrated at losing projects and having to spend countless hours rebuilding them. On two separate occasions, iMovie has gotten "stuck" on launch and only shows partial screens and is inoperable. I found a thread where several other people were having this problem also. The remedy for me was removing my projects from the projects folder and then it will launch and operate fine, make new projects and functions normally. However, the original project somehow got corrupted, and when moved back into the projects folder, it freezes up iMovie. All previously uploaded/imported raw events are still available and fine, once I remove the culprit projects.
    I have installed all updates for iMovie, iLife '08, and iSupport. I also have removed several strategic preferences and cache files from the library, to no avail. One user reported success at making a new user account, logging in to that account, and copying the iMovie application to the shared folder, then logging back into the primary account and replacing the application. Didn't work for me.
    I am wondering if there is any way to save the project files like the older version iMovie HD? That way, I could save a back up copy of the working file somewhere and hopefully be able to use it, in the event that my project becomes corrupt. The project files don't have any extension. In iDVD, you are able to save a project in progress (to any location) and reopen it any time to make edits. In iMovie '08 there is no option to "open" an existing project, only start a new one. This seems very strange to me.
    I'm about to give up on iMovie '08, I see that many people are experiencing bugs and I'm tired of having to spend countless hours redoing work.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?

    Thanks for the suggestions. I tried them unsuccessfully. No worries, I've resigned to the fact that iMovie '08 is a POS, learned from doing some research, talking with tech support, and reading many other discussions. Why else would they offer a special iMovie 06 HD version for Leopard. Besides, much of the past functionality is now gone.
    I've downloaded and will use the HD version until I purchase Final Cut. Users beware, iMovie 08 is sketchy.

  • HELP Desktop reorganized, file split into 10 different pieces -- any way to revert without losing anything? Urgent!

    HELP!
    I was showing a friend/client how to take a screenshot of a section of the screen (cmd+shift+4), but I accidentally pressed ctrl+cmd+4 and perhaps a few others (mistake due to using non-apple keyboard with mine), which reorganized her very cluttered but very purposeful desktop!
    She was rather upset. It also placed all the files that wouldn't fit in a row beneath her hard-drive icon. Understandably, this is frustrating for her; but what made it worse is that a very important document (is it PDF, .Doc? I don't know...) is, she claims, in TEN PIECES! How is this possible?
    I think those are just leftover pieces and the main file is there somewhere, but I haven't heard from her -- this happened yesterday afternoon -- and I don't know if she's even used the finder to locate it (does she remember the name of the file?) -- and now she's going to visit the Apple store, and hoping they can do something for this dilemma!
    They can revert to a previous state, but then she might lose recent files.
    Is there any way (even intensive) to undo this re-organization of her desktop?
    What is the explanation of the important file splitting into ten pieces (apparently from accidentally re-organizing her desktop or pressing a combination of cmd, shift, ctrl, alt, and 4)? Is there any simple way to undo either of these? (I'd gladly suggest a program for her to use to combine pieces of a PDF file or images into a .doc, but at this point, understandably, she is wary of my help. I still want to know what's going on, nevertheless.)
    Thank You All!

    No way I know of to undo an arrange.  And I've never heard of files being broken into pieces, whether PDF, DOC, or other.

  • Stationary: Any way to copy without headers?

    I have started using stationary from iMail ....very cool. I would like to be able to create an email using stationary, and then save the body of the email with stationary formatting/pictures in tact, but without the email header. In essence, I want to use the email stationary template as a document template that could then be saved as pdf and sent as an attachment in email. Is this doable?

    Thank you.  I assume that each file in the Trash bin has to be dragged one-at-a-time to the desktop file?  That's going to take some time.  I didn't see any way to select all files at once.  Apparently the Trash bin isn't a file since I can't find it anywhere under Finder.  Thanks again.
