Anyone able to authenticate against password protected Samba/SMB shares?

With on 10.5.8, I was able to connect to my Linux server using the Samba protocol. When the Samba shares did not allow guest/anonymous logins, I was able to supply an user/password, and it worked wonderfully.
Currently, on 10.6, I'm able to mount shares with guest/anonymous access but I am not able to mount password protected shares.
In the past, there was a problem in the smb.conf setting of:
encrypt password = yes
And I've tried both "yes" and "no" values to no avail. Has something broke or changed in the way 10.6 talks Samba?

Hi all,
I found the answer on my side. But it is rather strange that it worked with 10.5.8 and older. But it does not work with 10.6.
In Linux, in my smb.conf file, I had:
security = SHARE
If I change it to:
security = USER
and add the line:
user = +comma separated list of users+
To effect this new settings, I had to restart the Samba daemons. And then things started to work for me.

  • Does anyone have any suggestions for password protecting e-mail on the i pad?

Does anyone have any suggestions for password protecting e-mail on the i pad?  Other people sometimes want to use my i pad but I don't want them to have access to my e-mail (which is on AOL)
Presently you can password protect the whole i pad by having to put in a 4 digit code to open it, but once it's open whoever is using it has access to everything you have on it.

Skydiver...that did it!!  I shut the mail app from automatically opening and now I can sign onto my AOL acct. through Safari!!  I had called Apple Care and had asked  different peope in Apple stores about this and no one but you had any suggestions!  YAY!!  Thanks!!!

  • Can anyone inform me how to password protect iphone on boot/startup

    Hi,
Can anyone inform me how to password protect iphone on boot/startup like a normal phone/smartphone. Im not talking about the passcode lock feature.
    Thanks,

I'm not sure what you are looking for, Joe. The passcode lock code is also required when restarting the phone after turning it off, and when rebooting after a reset procedure.

  • ITunes Unresponsive when iTunes library is Stored on Samba SMB share

I run a gigabit network, my router, switches, and computer networking interfaces all support and indicate they are running with gigabit speed networking.
I have no problem reading or writing to/from the Samba/SMB shares from Finder, however when I try to run iTunes with the share connected, it will be unresponsive for great lengths of time.
I have tested the read speed and it ranges from 60-80 mB/s over the network. I have tried with both the 802.11n (2.4ghz and 5.2 ghz) and gigabit ethernet adapters on the mac mini to no avail.
I have attempted minor tweaks to the smb settings on the mac mini, as well as turning off/on firewalls and IPv6, enabling low-bit encryption support on the Windows Server, and modifying the MTU size of my router.
I see no problems with any of my hardware or software except iTunes (with one exception) so I was hoping I could find someone in a similar position who may have resolved the issue for themselves.
The one exception is with iPhoto when dealing with HD video recordings from my iPhone 4. iPhoto also has problems with SMB in my experience, however the problem is much more prominent on iTunes.

    Hi,
We are planning to migrate Windows Server 2008 R2 AD to Windows Server 2012 R2 AD. But we have some Windows 2003 member servers (Running RADIUS for VPN user to authenticate their AD accounts). Does anyone know that existing Windows 2003 member

  • Samba (smb) share and FSevents for Back-up

I want to make a backup using FSevents from a mounted Samba volume to a mounted AFP volume using an OSX server.
    Is this possible?

You can have one icloud account and a different itunes account on the phone. I have my icloud account and a shared itunes account. He does not have to use the new icloud account as is ID in itunes and app store. He can keep using the old one.

  • How to password protect "Find My Mac" feature?

Anyone know how I might password protect the "Find My Mac" feature that's accessible in the iCloud System Preference Pane?  My reasoning is that if someone stole my computer while I was still logged in, it seems far too easy for the thief to simply navigate to the iCloud System Preference screen and uncheck "Find My Mac" to prevent me from tracking down the computer.  Many of the other System Preferences can be padlocked -- seems like this feature should be as well.  Any ideas?

    Old Toad,
If I password protect my user account, then the person who has stolen my macbook would not able to login. Hence the macbook will not be able to connect to the internet because it could be a new WIFI network that my macbook has not logged in before. If it is not connected to the internet, then we cannot locate it.
Ideally, we should allow the thief to login to the macbook and allow him to use the WIFI. The iCloud settings should alone be password protected so that the thief will not be able to tinker with that. This way the macbook will come online (which ever wifi network it is) and we will be able to locate it.
    Thanks

  • Create password protected website

    Hello there,
Does anyone know how I may be able to create a password
protected website in Dreamweaver, Flash, or Fireworks? I have
already built the website and it is live. But the owner would like

Any feedback, advice or webpage tutorials would be awesome help.
    Thanks so much.

You can do this using server scripting - ASP/ASP.Net/PHP/CF
    for example.
The trick is to know a) which are supported by your host, and
    b) which are
    supported by your brain....

  • Password protected pdf files in c7

i am not able to open the password protected pdf files in my c7..it does not even show an option for typing the password..it just show the file is password protected and cannot be opened..i never found such problem in my old n82..why nokia is doing like this in new upgraded phones ...any solutions for this...please...all my mobile bills and credit card bills comes via password protected pdf files...

Well,  first, you probably don't have Acrobat 9.5.5 installed on Ubuntu unless you are running a VM image or using WINE to do so.  You are probably using Adobe Reader 9.x.  If a file was encrypted for Acrobat X and later then you do actually need Adobe Reader version 10.x or later.  Unfortunately there isn't a version 10.x for UNIX/LINUX.  What to do?  Use a VM or WINE and load it up that way.  If you really are running Acrobat 9.5.5 on Ubuntu via a VM image or WINE then you need to load Adobe Reader 10.x or Adobe Reader 11.x.

  • Password Protection: Controls, etc

Hi everyone, I was just wondering if anyone had any ideas regarding password protection of controls.
More specifically I am interested in "protecting" these values while the VI is NOT running.
I have developed one or two methods to do this, but both require excessive controls, event cases, etc.
So basically I was just wondering if someone has a simple method of "protecting" a value of a control from being edited while the VI is not running (aka the previous "run" value is loaded at next start etc)
    Any input would be great
    Thanks,

The second scenerio - leaving the VI open but not running.
When I create an .exe file, the user has an "EXIT" option. If they choose the exit option, the VI remains open but not running. They can then change any front panel values, and then restart the application. This kind of circumvents my password protection.
The way I did it was made 2 sets of controls, one visible on the front panel, and one not visible. the program operates off of the hidden controls. when a visible control is changed, the user is prompted for a password. to fix teh above mentioned case, i load the hidden values to the visible controls at the start of the program.
I was just curious if anyone else had tried to fix this issue...a file to reload the values would probably work well too i would think, however then someone could just edit the text or excel file right?Message Edited by esa_paranoid on 05-26-2005 12:51 PM

  • Can time machine files be password protected?

My college-aged daughter has a Macbook Pro and a portable external hard drive (Mini-G) that she uses as a back up drive with Time Machine. I am concerned that if she lost her external drive or if it were stolen, the files on the drive would be accessible to anyone (I can get to them with my MBP). The computer itself is password protected but the back up drive is not. Does anyone know how I can password-protect the drive or do something else for security?
    Thanks

the mac way to do this is to enable filevault on her home directory. then the home directory will be kept in an encrypted disk image which nobody can open without a password. same will be true for the backups of that home directory on the TM drive. but filevault has some unpleasant limitations for TM. you can't use TM interface to restore files ina filevaulted home directory and it's only backed up when you log out.
the only other option is to use full disk encryption like PGP.
I think it works with Time machine but I'm really not sure on this.

  • Can you restrict or password protect podcasts?

I would like to do a podcast but would like to be able to restrict or password protect it. Is this possible? if not are there any other options?
    Thxs.

Yes if you have a program that allows you to set a password on the PDF file or you ZIP it with a password set on it. For that you wouild also need a ZIPping program that allows you to set a password. Adobe Acrobat does, not sure about Acrobat reader. And there may be other PD creator programs that allow a password to be set.
But with a password set, either on the PDF or a ZIP file, the person you are sending it to would need to know the password to even open it for viewing. Maybe you are looking to Lock the PDF from being edited?

  • How do I password protect the external hard drive used for Time Machine backup

Can anyone help me to put password protection on the external hard drive I use to Time Machine backup my iMac internal hard drive?  I use Snow Leopard 10.6

I think that was FileVault 1.  Starting with Lion (10.7) Mac OS X uses FileVault 2, which is whole disk encryption.
Based on complaints seen in these forums, I would say FileVault 2's only complaint has been when people forget their password/encryption key (it seems an encrypted disk does prevent anyone without the password from accessing the data, including the real owner).  Otherwise it does not seem to be causing any serious issues.  Your Mileage may vary and objects are closer than they appear in your side view mirror (standard disclaimer).  Of course this is all academic while you are using Snow Leopard (10.6).
There are other whole disk encryption packages available, such as PGP Whole Disk Encryption, HOWEVER, I would not advise it for your Mac OS X boot disk, as it has been known to be a problem when you try to install operating system updates or upgrade to a new version.  NOTE:  I have not seen PGP Whole Disk Encryption discussed much, ever since FileVault 2 came along.
