Anyone following the Flash vs. HTML5 debate

Hey everyone. I have been developing systems in Flex3/4 and AS3 for two and a half fantastic years now.
Flex and AS3 have been an absolute pleasure to work with. True OOP support, creating subcomponents a piece of cake, great development tools,
cross browser compatibility, seamless integration with J2EE server components, great support forums, fantastic eco system.  Making things visually pleasing and interesting, while being very usable, reusable (from an OO perspective)  in any other language is just not possible at this time. I could go on and on.
Lately I have read debates about HTML5 vs. The Flash Runtime.
My response. You're kidding me right. There is nothing to compare here. HTML5 and JavaScript. I would much rather swallow my tongue than code anything in either HTML, or JS. I had the unfortunate experience with a project coding in HTML and JS a few years ago. My stomach hasn't been right since. In all fairness to the HTML/JS hackers out there. Sure if you're developing web pages or a web site. Then sure, the HTML,CSS,JS thing will do you good.
However. Serious web applications that present scientific data, and retrieve that data from a DB Server, like for instance, the stuff I'm working on. Need a web UI that can present that information in a creative and imaginative way.
As well as the ability to make the code modular, OO, and use best practice patterns like IOC,DI, as well as, integrate, easily with a backend J2EE service.  The natural choice here is Flex/AS.
So what if the flash runtime environment burns a lot of compute cycles on your desktop.  Are you kidding. Irrelevant. Steve Jobs is the last guy that should be criticizing that aspect of Flash. Ever heard of a product
called NeXT. This was one of Steve Jobs visions that tanked. Why. This was a clear case of the software being too advanced for the hardware, at the time to handle. So. You critics that blast flash in that context. Just shut up. The hardware will catch up. It always does. Ever heard of Moore's Law.
Anyways. I'm tired of hearing the bashing of the Flash runtime. Sometimes I think developers follow the masses, just for, well, being one of the herd.

Having fought this battle at work for way too long, I can tell you that it mostly boils down to ideology.
Our product was originally a in house Java library that generated AJAX components. After it became unmaintainable (only 5 guys trying to create a product and maintain the library) I started looking into Flex. Flex did everything we were trying to do with AJAX and then some but there were those who fought me tooth and nail to go the HTML5 route.
They threw everything and the kitchen sink at me trying to dissuade management from going the Flex route. They would dig up ancient problems with the flash player, you name it. Steve Job's statements about Flash didn't help either. What won them over (or finally made them shut up) was the fact that there were no good HTML5 dev environments like there is for Flex.
What seemed to drive them was partially not percieving Flex as being open source and partially actionscript was new and unknown to them. Like the saying goes: If you have a hammer everything looks like a nail.
HTML5, Javascript and AJAX have their place. But if you want to write actual applicaitons Flex is the way to go.

  • Is anyone seeing the flashing globe on startup in Mavericks?

When I startup my MBA running Mavericks 10.9.2, I was geting a flashing globe and long delay before being presented with the Apple logo and, ultimatley, the login screen.
For what it's worth, now that Activity Monitor no longer shows a disk usage pie chart, I brought up Disk Utility and, to my amazement, saw, in addition to the legit Macintosh HD boot drive, an AdobeFlashPlayerInstaller .dmg file shown as a selectable startup disk!  That disk image file was in downloads; I deleted it from that folder and emptied the trash. I rebooted. No flashing globe - problem solved. I post this becasue all of the discussion threads I could find on this issue were pre-Mavericks, in the 2007 - early 2013 time frame. Well, the issue exists and this is a way to solve it.
What did SJ say about about Flash? A "bag of hurt"? I agree.
Hope one or more of you find this useful.
    Pioneer.

I had another version of this problem, ultimately traced to a faulty USB device (my Apple keyboard). After repairing permissions, running Disk Utility, and reinstalling Mavericks, the flashing globe persisted. However, after the reinstall I also got error messages about multiple kernel extension problems. Apple Support suggested USB triage—removing all USB devices and plugging them back in one at a time and restarting. With everything unplugged, startup was normal. The keyboard showed up immediately as the problem. Plugged in a spare keyboard and the flashing globe appeared no more.

Can anyone help me connect my Macbook Air to a SAMSUNG TV.  When I follow the basic instructions (Thunderbolt to HDMI connection) the screen on my computer goes grey and an error message appears inviting me to press any button to restart the Macbook.  When I do this nothing happens.  Only when I disconnect the computer from the TV does the Macbook allow me to login. The TV does not receive any signal from the Macbook even though I know the HDI port works fine.  Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?  Do I need to enable something on the Macbook?

    An update...
I downloaded Apple's (rather large!) list of software updates today, and I was finally able to recognize my iPod again. I did a restore using the iPod updater from 06-2006, and all seemed to work OK. (I'm afraid to try the new one again!)
Then I tried to re-load my music library from iTunes, and got stuck. It froze up after a while and wouldn't go any further.
When I disconnected my iPod from my computer, I find 2 podcasts and nothing else, though iTunes told me it had transferred 600+ songs. Those 2 podcasts do play fine, and the basic iPod software all seems to be intact.
So -- anyone get through this connection problem and have any ideas to share??

  • How can i set the html5 player by default in ubuntu instead of the flash player ? i just can use the flash player as default

Well i use lubuntu 14.04 and i've realized that the html5 player on youtube works so much better than the flash player, but i can't use it by default, for play videos i have to request the html5 player, and the problem is when i restart the browser or when i turn off my computer, big is my surprise because youtube is using the flash player. If i disable the flash plugin is ok because youtube doesn't have another option but to use html5, but this is not the solution, because there is still some videos that use flash, and other web sites too. so: how can i fix this or i just have to wait that mozilla gives html5 support for linux, because on windows the default player is the html5. i'd really appreciate any help, thanks

I usually use Ubuntu, and am not aware of HTML5 being the default for Flash videos on Windows.
Is it more likely you have chosen an option on the YouTube website to use HTML5. I think this page offers support and includes an option to toggle HTML5 or FlashPlayer.

  • Email links out of Practice Fusion are not active (as they are in IE), which they say is a problem with "something lost in the communication between the Flash engine and the browser". Does anyone have experience with this?

This is a medical records system, cloud based. I use Firefox to get into the system, but any browser would work. Other than this problem, Firefox works fine (better than IE, in my opinion).
Patient demographics include their email, which is hyperlinked and should go right to Outlook (my default email program). This works in IE, but nothing happens on the click when using Firefox as the browser.
I queried Practice Fusion, which replied: In regards to your previous question about the email hyperlink in the patient information, it looks this is not something that can be fixed on our end right now. It is the web browsers' responsibility to handle these types of links, and there seems to be something lost in the communication between the Flash engine and the browser. I apologize for any inconvenience.
Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

I have Windows XP, 32 bit version 2002 Svc Pack 2 and when trying to download iTunes 10.5.1 I am getting the following "The older version of Bonjour cannot be removed.  Contact your technical support."  I've tried a good number of remedies to no avail.  Can anyone help?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.
If you are running 64-bit Windows and the above steps haven't helped try installing the version of iTunes that can be downloaded from this support document. iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit — for older video cards)
If you still have no luck try reinstalling iTunes 12.0, links in the user tip.

  • Anyone know the secret to updating flash player on iMac OS X?

I just got an iMac OS X v. 10.4.11 PowerPC G5.  safari shuts down if I go to youtube and I can't seem to download flash player update.  My husband and I are recent converts to Mac and obviously have a lot to learn lol.  We were thinking last night that Safari would quit because Youtube is a video site and maybe perhaps the version on this comp is so old that it just didn't work?  Thing is, if I am on any other site like and click on a video to watch it, it just prompts me to download newer version of flash player but Safari stays open.  It's just for Youtube that it does this.  I'm a sad panda because I go to youtube all the time.  When I went to download the flash update, it just said something like my operating system is too old and requires a version of flash that is no longer supported.  D:  Any tips for a noob?

The latest version of Adobe FlashPlayer can be obtained from here:
    http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/download.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFl ash
You can check here what version of Flash player you actually have installed:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/155/tn_15507.html
You can check here:  http://www.adobe.com/products/flash/about/  to see which version you should install for your Mac and OS. Note that version 10,1,102,64 is the last version available to PPC Mac users*. The latest version, 10.2.152.25, 10.3.x beta, or later, is for Intel Macs only, as Adobe no longer support the PPC platform. Version 11.0.1.152 is for Lion.
    * Unhelpfully, if you want the last version for PPC Macs, you need to go here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/142/tn_14266.html  and scroll down to 'Archived Versions/Older Archives'. The first one on the list, Flash Player 10.1.102.64 is the one you download. More information here:  http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/838/cpsid_83808.html
You should first uninstall any previous version of Flash Player, using the uninstaller from here (make sure you use the correct one!):
    http://kb2.adobe.com/cps/909/cpsid_90906.html
and also that you follow the instructions closely, such as closing ALL applications first before installing. You must also carry out a permission repair after installing anything from Adobe.

I have followed the Apple Support instructions but these 2 errors always appear: "The program can't start because MSVCR80.dll is missing from your computer" and 'Error 7' but still not able to run iTunes. Anyone have a suggestion?

Try completely removing and reinstalling iTunes and all related components; you may need to do this multiple times. It won't normally affect the iTunes library, but that should be backed up anyway.

This sounds like a virus or malware program that has made its way onto your computer.  I would ensure you have the latest virus definitions on your computer and run a thorough (complete) scan of your system.  If this doesn't work, I would suggest  you use Microsoft's Malware Removal Tool.  You can download it at the link below.   Hope this helps.

After following the instructions to reset my ipod classic i am confronted with a red cross. Does anyone know how to remove this?

    Hello theplantman5,
Thanks for participating in the Apple Support Communities.
If your iPod only shows a circle and cross (or x) screen after resetting or restoring it, try placing it in Disk Mode and restoring it.
    Restore iPod from Disk Mode
    Disconnect iPod from your computer.
Manually put iPod into Disk Mode.
Open the latest version of iTunes and connect iPod.
    Restore iPod.
If these steps don't work, or you've already completed them, your iPod may need service:
    Setup Service for iPod
If you cannot force your iPod into disk mode and restore it, then your iPod may need service. Click one of the links below to setup an iPod Service Request online or make a reservation at the Genius Bar before visiting your local Apple Retail Store.

For some reason, the Flash Player on my MAC Pro stopped working, I've checked the install on my Adobe Flash Player and the are current, but the plug-ins don't seem to be working.  Can anyone help me get it working?

It happened w/ my MacPro 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon about 5 months ago; tried everything I could think of including multiple downloads of Flash, and hadn't seen any solutions here.  Adobe insisted many times that I download & update, but the newest vers. wouldn't work on the computer.
On checking Adobe/Flash was reading the computer as being an earlier model. So the new version of Flash wouldn't work w/ it.  Snow Leopard 10.6.8 was being read correctly but not the computer model (can't remember what MP model  it was reading).
Nothing worked. So -- a very old PC trick: If nothing else works get the hammer out and bludgeon it-- might work. So I reset everything by putting the Snow Leopard  install disk in, held down 'C' on restart and let it run.
Didn't take anything off the HDD first, just ran the install disk over everything.
The experts on the forums are probably cringing right now & I'd like very much for them to jump in. Love to know how my computer model was being mis-read. All I can say is, for the brave and desparate, it worked for me. Something to keep in mind.
It helped that I had a new computer on order & have 2 backups, one being mandatory. Might work only the one time but worth a check.
Good luck on working this one out.
