Aperture 3.1: Import dialog hangs

I discovered the folloing problem: When opening the import dialog and browsing through different directories with raw files, at some point the whole dialog hangs with the "spinning wheel" and "Loading media".
When this occurs, i can continue browsing through directories, but aperture doesn't display the contents.
This is reproducable on a Mac Pro and a MacBook Pro. On both systems also with fresh clean install of 10.6.4 and Aperture 3.1 only.
There are also some messages in the system log when this occurs:
Oct 24 12:24:31 MacPro Aperture[313]: Thread Main Thread Exception NSMutableRLEArray objectAtIndex:effectiveRange:: Out of bounds Caught while posting: MSG --- CAT: Internal Local Object(0xEFF); TASK: (null)(0x1); PRI: 3; REPLY: 0; SYNCH: 0; THREAD: <XTThread:0x1236c0d60 'Album Assets' state: Waiting, handlers:\n <XTObject: 0x1236b4730 (0)>>; DEST: (null)

Someone else discovering such problems?
BR,
Mark.

Found the problem: The "hang" of the import dialog occurs if there is only ONE file in the directory!!!
I.e.: If i have a subdirectory for example 20101002 an there is exactly one raw file in it (no matter from which camera), the trouble begins. I can't cancle dialog, i can't navigate to other subdirectories, i only can quit Aperture.
If I put a second RAW file in this diretory, than there are no prblems at all. Aperture woks as desinged.
Can anyone try to reproduce this bug on his system?
I think thats a simple error in coding the import dialog ant it's connected to the bug when the last image stays selected when you press "Deselect all".
As in the latter case, if there are more than one image in the directory and i only select one and then try to cancle the import dialog, it also hangs.
So there seems to be a problem if there is only one file or only one selected file in the directory!

  • Aperture 3 Import Dialog Doesn't Show Any Images

Sometimes the import dialog just doesn't show any images. First time I encountered this I had to restart Aperture. But now even that doesn't help.

    Any ideas or fixes?

    Hello qua
You don't say what your source is when your imports have been experiencing problems. Are you importing directly from a camera (or a card in a card reader)? Or are you importing images which have already been downloaded to your hard disk?
I've just completed importing approximately 5,000 images which date back to 2001, across several hundred projects. These have, obviously, been imported from an existing disk-based archive. Every so often, I'd find what you've described - the import window with the source correctly selected, but no preview images. I never worked out a pattern for this behaviour. However, I found dealing with it +for my particular circumstances+ was as simple as pressing <escape> to cancel the import and then immediately beginning the import again. It never failed on the second time around. I never needed (for this problem) to quit and restart Aperture, let alone reboot my system.
The problem I just described was being experienced on a fully patched 3.0.1 system. Of course, you might be experiencing something slightly different...

    Gary

  • Open file dialog hangs

I have some raw video files dumped from a Sony HD camera. The files are in some MPEG format (VLC just reports mpegv, mpega), the resolution is 1440x1088, and they are about 10 GB for 1 hour of video. My Quicktime wont play the video, but VLC plays it fine.
When I try to "Import video from file..." in iMovie '08, and navigate to the folder where the files are, the open file dialog hangs and iMovie beachballs - so far I have only had patience for 30 min, then a Force Quit is the only option.
Edit: OK, so it took 45 min then I could interact. The .mpeg is greyed out and as soon as I touch anything, iMovie beachballs again.
Any idea of the reason for this and how to circumvent it? Is iMovie trying to extract info from the files beforehand? Is it due to the file size (10 GB)?
Presently, I am trying to transcode the files using VLC, but I am having some trouble finding the best settings so not to loose too much quality, get rid of the interlace, etc. Any pointers on how to optimize setting for processing afterwards in iMovie HD and/or '08 are appreciated.

I don't understand how iMovie works with those thumbnails.
I imported some DV footage from an old iMovie HD, 2 clips. The files generated by iMovie'08 looks like this:
clip1.dv is 768x567 and is 118 MB on disk (although Quicktime reports 238 MB) and clip2.dv is 768x567 and 53 MB on disk. iMovie'08 creates a folder iMovie Cache with a file Cache.mov, 720x576, 12 kB on disk. In the folder iMovie Thumbnails is the file clip01.mov, 160x90, 10 MB on disk and clip02.mov, 160x90, 4.5 MB on disk. In the subfolder iMovie Cache is the file Cache.mov, 160x90, 16 kB.
Now, the HD footage I had to process differently. In order to get it into iMovie'08, I used VisualHub to convert the 1 hour video at 1440x1088, 10 GB on disk, file HD.mpeg to AppleTV format (720p) as HD.mp4, now 1280x720, 1.5 GB. I import this in iMovie, goes fine, takes a minute or so. Then iMovie starts creating its thumbnails. It took 4 hours 9 minutes!
The clip is in there as one 1 hour clip. The file structure is as follows: HD.mp4 is 1280x720, 1.5 GB on disk. In the folder iMovie Cache is cache.mov, 1280x720, 2.1 MB. In the folder iMovie Thumbnails is HD.mov, 160x90, 980 MB on disk - ie. two-thirds the size of the original file, in 1/64 the resolution! In the subfolder iMovie Cache is cache.mov, 160x90, 590 kB.
Skimming is hardly possible on the HD clip, especially moving the cursor backwards, and it is hard to trim selections. It plays fine, though. For the DV clips skimming it works fine.
Any ideas what is going on here, and how to work around? Is the inefficiency due to the very large clip? I tried to trim of a 2 min clip from the original file and put it through the same conversion, but the result was more or less the same, skimming-wise - very inefficient.

  • Import weirdness and import dialog box

I'm in the import box and I want to import just the RAW (DNG) files from a folder and not the accompanying JPEGs. First strange thing I notice is that Aperture is telling me that the JPEG files are roughly the same size as the RAw files. I thought I could sort the list by file size, knowing that the RAw files would all be bigger than the JPEGs. Wrong. Aperture is giving me bogus file sizes for the JPEGs. I went to the Finder to double check and, surely enough, the average JPEG file size is about 2.5 megabytes. Aperture has got them listed, on averages, as 15 megabyte files. So I cannot sort by file size.
So, I go down to the sort drop-down menu at the bottom of the Import box and I can only sort by File Name, File Size, or Image Date; the Custom is greyed out. How do I access the "Custom" sort feature in the Import Dialog box? And why is Aperture giving me bogus file sizes for my JPEGs?
Aperture is in sore need of a real update.

jrg_uk has the answer. The list view is often ignored, or just plain forgotten!

  • Aperture 3 not importing in order

When importing from my Nikon to Aperture 3 the images are not in order- they are randomized (and not even during the same shoot).

Hi Odsel -- welcome to the user-to-user Aperture forum.

    OS and Aperture version.
Where you see the problem (Import dialog? Which import dialog (there are a few)? After import? In which view?)
Do you see the same thing every time?
Does reformatting your card in your camera change anything? (Standard best practice is to reformat your cards in the camera in which they will be used after you have confirmed the upload and made a back-up.)

  • Import dialog shows iPhone twice, and photo list only shows outlines

In Aperture 2.1.2 I have been able to import photos from my iPhone until just recently. Now the import dialog shows three choices of import devices/locations, Local Disk, RJH iPhone and a second RJH iPhone. If I select either iPhone the main window displays outlines of 7 images but no picture information except for the filename. If I actually try to import the pics it says 'Import completed with errors, the following files were not imported' and it lists all the filenames. One of the iPhone devices shows up in the import list EVEN WHEN THE iPHONE IS NOT CONNECTED!
I'm sure there is a plist or something that has the list of import devices bu I have not been able to find it despite extended web and support searches.
    Anyone heard of this?

OK, I have since discovered that the second iPhone device is listed only when my iPhone is plugged into a DIFFERENT USB port on my MBP. If I plug it into the same port I usually use, it is only listed one. However, both Aperture and iPhoto still see one iPhone device whether it is plugged in or not, and both show images with outlines only and won't import photos. So strange

  • JFilehooser dialog hangs up.

    Hi all;
In my program the user uses a JFileChooser dialog to select a file.
after this a ProgressMonitor popup to reflect progress of File importing.
The problem is that the JFileChooser dialog hangs for a moment before it closes and the progressBar shows up. the two windows get somewhat mixed for a while.
Is there a way to ensure the JFileChooser dialog gets closed and hidden before the popup progrssbar shows up?
    thanks.

Is there a way to ensure the JFileChooser dialoggets closed and hidden before the popup progrssbar
    shows up?
Display the progress bar in a
SwingUtilities.invokeLater(...);I tried this method but without success !
The filechooser frame hangs up for a while before the progressBar starts it's thread.
I'm guessing this is because launching progressBar involves starting many threads(i have at least 3).
could this be the reason ?
any Ideas to overcome this problem?
    thanks.

  • Creating a new folder starts up import dialog box...

When I click the plus sign on the folders panel, it takes me to the create folder dialog where I can browse to the location of the new folder.
Sometimes, after clicking OK, LR then starts up the import dialog box with a heap of images to import which I then need to cancel. I should have checked where the images were from but have not thought to do so before this post.
Anyway, is there any functionality in LR that should import images when a new folder is created? I think this happens when I don't have a folder selected...not sure.. away from LR at the moment.
As an aside, I wish you could click the + on the folders panel and LR would create a subfolder at the selected location with the name ready to edit, rather than going to a new dialog and having to browse to the location.

    >"Anyway, is there any functionality in LR that should import images when a new folder is created? I think this happens when I don't have a folder selected...not sure.. away from LR at the moment. "
I can't duplicate this. Whether I have highlighted an existing LR folder or not, clicking the "+" brings up the create folder dialog, I browse to a location and create a subfolder. That folder then becomes a LR folder. If I do have a current LR folder highlighted, the process (or just right clicking on the folder name and choose "Create Folder") brings up the create folder dialog with the current LR folder as the parent. I can create a new folder and it will become a LR subfolder of the highlighted one.
    >"As an aside, I wish you could click the + on the folders panel and LR would create a subfolder at the selected location with the name ready to edit, rather than going to a new dialog and having to browse to the location."
Actually, the new dialog that opens for me (as described above) places me in the selected folder - all I do is click the create folder button in that window and a new subfolder is made. I think the reason LR won't just create a new subfolder without going to a new dialog is that the folders panel lists the "LR folders" which are a parallel universe to the "real folders" on your drive. Perhaps the LR engineers thought that by providing you with the browser/creator dialog, they were giving you more control. Who knows.

  • Lightroom won't open Import dialog box

Lightroom was working fine, but recently started locking up as soon as I click on import to bring up the import dialog box.  Other than that, lightroom appears to be running fine and zippy, but as soon as I click the button or go through file menu it freezes.  I'm running Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit on a Core i7 with 8 GB of ram.  Things I have tried are below:
Restoring Windows to before last critical update.
    Uninstalling Antivirus SW
Uninstalling and Reinstalling Lightroom (reinstall was fresh from Creative Cloud to make sure it was the most recent version)
    Creating a new catalog
    Updating HW drivers
Tried with cards/reader/usb devices in and out
Any ideas because my next step is to format the HD and try a fresh install of windows and everything else?
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • LR3 Import dialog - Missing "Show in Library" option when importing existing photos

Please add the option "Show in Library" into the right click menu when attempting to import a photo that already exists in the LR3 catalog. It was a convenient feature in LR2 to jump directly to the existing photo. In LR3 I must cancel the import dialog and search the photo manually.

  • Import dialog doesn't appear (OS X)

When I connect my SanDisk Firewire memory card reader to my Mac Pro, Lightroom doesn't open and the import dialog doesn't appear. This worked fine on my previous G5. iPhoto isn't opening either... nothing happens at all when I plug in the reader.

Chris, you may have already done this, but be sure to check 'Show Import Dialog when a Memory card is detected' under Import in LR PReferences, as well.

  • LR5 Import dialog does not list any images

Lightroom 5 is not seeing that a folder of images I'm trying to import has any images in it. The folder is question has well over 5,000 jpegs (it's my iPhone image depository). While I was able to import images from this folder with no problem in LR4, LR5 is telling me that there are no images in the folder. I've double checked that all my import settings are normal and the same as LR4 and it doens't matter. No matter what I do, I cannot get LR5 to see that there are any images in this folder to import.
    Any thoughts?

Message title was edited by: Brett N

"If the folder already exists in the Folder panel, select it and Choose Library > Synchronize Folder."
It doesn't exist in the Folder panel. It never has. It would mess up my workflow to have it as such. I only import from this folder.
Try (via finder) moving a few of the images in the folder to another folder that has been cataloged. Then synchronize that folder to see if the images show.
I did this and the images showed up fine, so there is nothing wrong with the image files.
Instead of invoking the Import Dialog first, drag an image from th Camera Roll folder onto the Library module or the Lr icon. That will bring up the import dialog. see if you get the same results.
Did this and it did not work.
Why this is strange is that I have no problem importing from the same folder in Lightroom 4. Something has changed here in LR5.

  • Import process hangs indefinately on JPG and AVI files

    Hi,
I'm seeing a similar issue to some of the other posts.
My configuration is Windows 7 x64, 4GB RAM and a Core i7. All the photos I want imported have been moved to the C drive.
When I try to import a folder with a couple of sub-folders containing a total of about 3000 JPG and AVI files (from a CANON 450D and Fuji Finepix 200EX), the import process hangs inderfinately, and I need to kill the process.
Only around 500 photos get imported.
One strange thing is that I am only able to preview a couple of the files in the preview grid. However when selecting to view a single file instead of the grid view I am able to view the file in question.
I have tried to import one file at a time (for a couple of the ones that fail that is) but the import process still hangs, even though I am able to view the file itself before import.
Have also tried only JPG files, same result.
    Any ideas?
    thanks

What happens if you try to copy these files to your iMac first? Your problem may not be that applications quit when opening but rather you're having problems simply accessing the disk.
If your external disk was formatted as NTFS by your Windows machine then your Mac will not be able to write back to the disk. Your applications may be attempting to save temporary or permanent files back to the disk. Verify this by going to the Apple menu and selecting "About This Mac". Click the "More Info..." button. Under the Hardware section on the left, look for your drive. It's probably under ATA. Select your drive and look at the "File System". If it is formatted as NTFS, you can copy the files to your iMac, and use the Disk Utility to reformat the drive to a Mac or MS-DOS format.
This could also be a symptom of disk corruption. You can begin troubleshooting by using the Disk Utility found in /Applications/Utilities to verify/repair your disk. If Disk Utility finds problems but is unable to fix them, you can purchase third party tools such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro to attempt to repair your disk.
    Hope this helps! bill
