Aperture 3 and web journal

I'm trying to post a web journal to my mac account with little success. I'm using the Export Web pages button with the destination being Idisc.sites.journalname. The exporting ball spins at the bottom of the page .... for hours but never completes. I cane find the web journal at http://homepage.mac.com/username/journalname but find that the journal pages and text have been completed but only about 5 or 6 photographs.
Any help most appreciated.
Mikey.

Hi Kit, thanks for the reply. I don't think it's a fault with Aperture 3. I remember receiving an email some time ago from apple saying that .mac would not allow new web journals to be posted after a certain dat. Any journals posted earlier would still be viewable on the web but could not be updated. It was around the time of the Mobileme launch and I hoped (after half-reading the email) that it would just be a case of using homepage.me etc. instead of homepage.mac etc.
If you look at the Aperture tutorials for posting to the web they only talk of Flickr and Facebook or Web Pages.
From what I can see, Aperture still lets you build a web gallery but you will have to post it via a third part service provider - which is a pity and and an extra expense. Aperture Web Journals are not perfect but they do allow text pages, which I really like. Aperture Web galleries are not as useful if you want to post photographs from various sources i.e. build a showcase of different types of work.
Thanks again for the reply.
Mikey.

  • How do i link individual web journal pages into an album or index?

I've recently started playing with the Web Journal functionality on Aperture 3. I really like how I can select photos from within Aperture and it automatically creates an index page with thumbnails and a detail page for each photo which can include the EXIF info.
What I haven't figured out is how to link individual journals into an overall home page. I'd like to have a single start page with all the albums listed on it, the user can click on one album, go to that web journal.
    Is that possible?

Thanks. I've tried that with Sandvox and it works but I find it's one way. I can create the Index on the main page in Sandvox linking to a collection of Web Journals, the viewer can click on that to get into the Aperture-created Web Journal and it all looks great. But, once you're finished looking at that particular Web Journal, there's no integrated way to get back to the original Index. You have to use the back button on the browser.
I guess I was hoping for some way to integrate the Web Journal and the Index so that you can move backwards as well as forwards. Have you been able to do that in iWeb (used to use that, moved to Sandvox when mobileme was dropped)?

  • Web journal

How can I view photos in an Aperture created web journal in full screen mode after logging into the web link? Once I get to the web link, the photos do not appear in full screen. The best I can do is use the zoom feature of the "VIEW" tab which does expand the photo but still does not show full screen.

So, I created a smart album based on a keyword. 100
images show up. Fine so far. I selected all, and then
created a web gallery from the selected images.
Only a percentage of the images ended up in the
gallery; I noticed only after I uploaded.
    <...>
Has anyone seen this issue? I can't find any useful
info on why this is happening. But it's driving me
nuts having lots of extra unwanted versions, and then
    having to delete stuff.
Hope someone can clue me in.
    <...>
You have run across a very interesting problem - I spent some time playing around with this last week and know the source of the issue.
What happens is this. Smart Albums contain only single versions of images. When you try to copy a set of images from a Smart Album into a normal Album, the only images that end up in the normal album are ones where the version in the Smart Album is also the stack pick! If you have you smart folder set to look inside stacks (as I think most people do) then you'll get some versions that are picks and some that are not.
Normally when you copy a version that is not the stack pick into an album, it simply uses the stack pick instead of the version you dragged in.
This is definitely a bug; I think the behavior I'd like to see (at least as an option) is to automatically set the album pick for a version dragged into an album if you do not drag in the stack pick. Or perhaps even have it set for every one you move in.
As noted the workaround is to use a smart web gallery or smart light table. Currently I have not yet been able to determine a good way to transfer a set of versions in a Smart Album to a normal Album.

  • How do I select and format fonts when creating a web Journal in Aperture?

I am creating a web journal in Aperture 3.5.1.  There is a not very functional way to create text boxes and add text interspersed with images.
I can open the font window, but highlighting text and formatting it in the font window has no effect.
In addition, the size of the font actually changes from paragraph to paragraph for no apparent reason.
How do I format text when creating a web journal?
After I have created the web site, I can open the html file and edit the source code, but this is very tedious.

  • I would like to edit web journal themes. Is this possible in Aperture 3?

I am making a website to display photos of coral species, and I need the following flexibility from the web journal page. A) is it possible to edit the web journal themes within Aperture, and/or B) is it possible for an html programmer to take the outputs from the Aperture web journal export (folder), and programme these externally?
    - multiple hierarchical headers, with a different header for each page (ie. a different species name per page)
    - different sized photographs, on individual pages.
    - option to include custom metadata fields in the web pages
    THANKS!!!

It can't be done directly from within Aperture but it is possible to modify (or better) create new themes.
The themes are located in the Aperture application bundle under Contents/Resources/WebThemes in subfolders by theme name. A good html progamer shouldn't have to much trouble figuring out whats what.

  • Hiring Someone to Create a Customized Aperture Web Journal Template

I'm interested in creating a customized Web Journal template for Aperture. Does anyone know anybody out there I could hire to do such a project?

The BEST way in my opinion is nothing mentioned in this forum:
    LIGHTSCRIBE BABY!!!!!!!!
Laser burn ANY image on the DVD just like Hollywood Movies baught in a store.
I paid $175.00 for a Lacie Dual Layer DVD Burner and it included Toast Titanium 7 and LightScribe Software - Best of all works on MACs ONLY (not PeeCee's) and produces flawless DVD's regardless of Brand name.
No ink jets to buy! No paper to buy! No stupid bulky printer to have on your desk! Just a slim Stainless Steel looking DVD Burner that puts to shame Apple's own SuperDrive OR any Label or Printer kit on the market today.

  • Aperture 2, Stacks and Web Gallery

I have had so many issues with this lately. I shot photos today, picked my favorites and created a web gallery. I then ordered my 40 photos in the web gallery in a very specific order to tell a story.
1st I noticed that the order sorted some how and I lost my custom sort. So I reordered it into a specific order.
Then I was working with stacks. I wanted to organize the rest of the photos in the project to find others that I missed before and to promote images to find better picks.
Then I noticed the Web Gallery would then automatically add all images in the stack next to the single photo in the Web Gallery.
2nd. My web gallery has hundreds of photos, mostly ones that I did not want displayed. Also my custom order was lost and I once again had to try to reorganize.
To make what could be a longer story short, I had to break all the stacks that I spent time on in order to remove the unwanted photos from the web gallery.
Are we forced to make a choice between using Stacks and Web Galleries? Can they NEVER be used together?

After much frustration and time looking at this issue, and reading this topic in forums, discussions and the Aperture User Manual (pg. 562 - 567) - for which there is no clear explanation of this - You can only use the stack pick in the Web Gallery.
    Exactly!
Which means : If you want maximum flexibility in creating Web Galleries, DO NOT use stacks.
I suppose this depends on what you are using stacks for. If you are grouping images in stacks that you want to use, you can certainly do that, but that will be problematic in Aperture in places other than gallery, because that is simply not what stacks are designed to do. If you have several shots so similar you will only use one, but don't want to throw the rest away (you might change your mind later) put them in a stack. Makes it easy to compare and "pick" which one to output. If you have a number of photos that are roughly similar, but you will be using more than one - you can initially stack them, but will probably be better off splitting the stack later. Say I am shooting sports and get a high-speed sequence of a breakaway. I could put the whole sequence in a stack initially, but some of those images are different enough that I might want to publish two or three (out of, say, 15 shots). I might get them all in one stack through auto stack, or even manually stack them initially, but I will probably set one pick and extract a few others. The alternates will be there in case I find a use for them later. Same thing with portraiture. When shooting portraits, I can get a lot of almost identical images - with small nuances in facial expression being the only difference. Another kind of stacking I often do is when I create new versions from the master and make color and exposure adjustments.
What happens to the thousands of stacks that people have already created in Aperture and would like to simply get photographs online? You must rework your entire organization (if you use stacks) to accommodate this inconsistency.
I think Aperture is actually pretty consistent regarding stacks and alternates. Alternates are ignored if you try to create a web journal, web gallery, web page, or a book. I see no problem getting them online - the picks will display, extract alternates if you want them to display also.
And to further complicate a situation, when you select one photograph in a stack, and create a 'Web Gallery', once created, every photograph in that stack is put into the 'Web Gallery'
In other words, there is no 'Ignore Stack Groupings' option in Web Galleries and since Picks can be anywhere in the stack - this creates an organizational nightmare.
Yes, if you try to drag a single image to another project or album, the rest of the stack comes along for the ride. I know this bugs you, but I actually like the way it works. Where you see this as inconsistent - I see it being very consistent. If I create a stack - that stack is identical in all locations. I can change the pick for different albums, but if i alter a stack in any other way - it is changed everywhere. This doesn't take up an real space on your computer - it is all just referencing back to the master images anyway. If seeing all those alternates in the stack bother you, just close the stack By the way, your pick cannot be "anywhere in a stack" - the pick is always on top. Your "album pick" can be anywhere in a stack, but close the stack and the album pick is what you will see.
Maybe you would do better using albums for the kind of organization you are doing - it sounds to me like you are using stacks kind of like albums anyway. Just select a stack and "create album from selection." Then you can unstack your stacks and work with albums instead. Then when you drag an image to a web gallery you won't get alternates.
But leave the stacks the way they are please - I love them just the way they are

  • Existing WEB Journals can no longer be viewed nor shared in IOS7 and does no longer exist in IOS8.

    To the CEO of Apple.
I never write comments on a website but this time I need to address my concerns.
As a big fan of the Apple products I am disappointed that a nice feature such as the Web Journals is no longer existing.
It allowed me to communicate on a nice and fancy way with my family worldwide. But not anymore... you changed the fun of being part of Apple
Why did you decide to change this nice feature which helped a lot of other users worldwide???
It was even better than PICASA!!!
I have an iPhone 6, iPhone 4S and iPad... but for now I am forced not to upgrade to IOS 8 due to the risk of not being able to use the iPhoto App which I purchased from the App Store!!!!
Therefore I would like you to reconsider and let us be able to reuse existing Web Journals created in older IOS versions and also create new Web Journals in IOS8.
    Thanks
    Jan

Jan, please send this comment to Apple using the feedback form.  You cannot rely on the developer team to browse this forum continually, but the feedback forms will be read by Apple. And you are right. The journals have been a great feature of iPhoto on iOS. I hope, the iOS 8 Photos.app will improve, if we keep sending feedback with feature requests.

  • Aperture Web Journal - image quality?

    Hi,
I process pictures for web in Photoshop and then back to AP3. Everything is fine and picture is just like I want. So I do this because of this AP Export problem with sharpening when you rezize pictures to web size.
When I create new Web Journal the image loses it's sharpnes. If I don't do something wrong, it means that AP3 Web function is worthless to me. In iWeb, I think, quality is better, but with AP3 it's so easy to make web pages.

Suggest that you contact Epson by phone, email and/or check out their Epson cx7800 Troubleshooting Guide link for answers. Did the printer come with a manual?
You posted no system info. Therefore, I also suggest that you also cross-post in one of the "Printer Forums" of whichever OS you are using.
    Good luck!

  • So now that iPhoto is gone what is the work around for getting web journals that were created and shared fixed as the album is empty now

I spent quite a bit of time creating a web journal that I had planned on updating in the future.  After migration the album is now empty and I need to know what the fix is for this?

You can do this with a transform effect, set to reflect, 1 copy.
In the appearance panel select the path and save this as a style which can be applied to new paths as you draw.

  • Is there a way to create a web journal based on faces?

I have a bunch of family photos from all branches of my family tree. I would like to create a web journal has photos of each individual on their own page. Does Aperture do that?

Aperture 3 supports the creation of web pages - you have web journals, web pages, smart web pages. The smart webpages are articulately convenient, because you can define smart rules for the content.  All web products have an initial overview page with thumbnails of each image and clicking one of the thumbnails will take you to a details page with the image enlarged. Then you can view the individual images a s a slideshow.
But since the demise of Mobile Me you cannot publish directly to a web server. You will need to export your web projects to a folder in the Finder and upload them to a FTP site, for example the FTP server of your internet provider. This is easy to do with tools like CyberDuck.
Aperture 3's faces feature will help you to tag the faces and find images of each person quickly. You can refer to faces names in smart albums or smart webpages with rules like "Faces is ..."
So you could create a smart web page based on a rule "keyword is 'family_tree" and "Face is 'grandpa'" or similar.
But there is no automatic option to create a journal of all the best of all faces images of each faces stack. You will have to select the images to be included in the journal yourself,  by creating an album or creating rules for a smart album.

  • Using Aperture and iWeb

Aperture has a de-luxe facility for making album pages and posting them in Mobile-me, using web journals, which include text and photos. However, you can not include links in them. So I have made an index page in iWeb which references my web journals.
It works, but it seems like a dumb system, and integration ought to be possible. The web journals do not appear in iDisk, but the index page does.
Aperture can export its web journals, but I can not find a way to get them into iWeb.
Has anyone worked through this one?
For ref my index page is at http://web.me.com/robneave99/RobsPhotography/MainPage.html

Where on your iDisk is the index file that Aperture created? Is it in the iDisk/Web/Sites folder? If so try the following link in your browser: http://web.me.com/YourMME_AccountName/index.html and see what you get.

  • Blank images using Web Journal

I've uploaded a Web Journal (around 4 hours!) and 4 of the images are blank/black (both the thumbnail and the main image).
Any ideas on the best way of fixing this problem. I'm loathed to just republish as I'm sure the same images will appear blank.

  • Stacks and Web pages

Hi, I have a project with a lot of stacks. I want to export a selection of it to a Web page. I set up a smart album to populate the Web page. That works fine... in Aperture's Browser. In the actual Web pages (and the viewer), only one image per stack is used. I tried to select the images by rating or by color, same result. Stack picks only is unchecked.
Even if I don't use a smart selection, but add the images directly to the Web page, only one per stack is used. Stacks are all open.
This feels like a bug to me, but does anyone know of a workaround?
    thanks!

Hi Grant. Stacks are, by design, collections within a Project which have one specified image as the "Pick" for each collection of images (Project or Albums) that includes the Stack. (Think of literally arranging photographs in a grid for review, and sliding pictures that are so similar that only one is of interest into a stack with the "pick" photo on top, the similar ones underneath, and the stack occupying one spot in the grid.) This general idea of "one important image per Stack per location" is how Stacks are implemented in Aperture -- as you've discovered.
This is from the Help file:
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=8%26sec tion=3%26tasks=true
    When you drag a stack into a webpage album, web journal album, book album, or slideshow album, the entire stack appears in the Browser, but *only the stack picks can be used for publication in webpages, web journals, books, and slideshows*. {Emphasis mine.}
One is temped to use Stacks as a general subordinate organizing level within a Project (or Album). In my experience, this never works out. Stacks are a specific organizing tool for sets of images which have one "Pick". Whenever I have two or more photos I want to work with within a Stack, I split the Stack so that each important photo becomes either a Stack Pick or stands alone. This violates my organizing method, but works well in practice.
(I see the same (mis)behavior when dragging an image from one Stack to another even when the Stacks are expanded (Aperture merges the two Stacks). This happens whether the Stacks were created by splitting a Stack, or by independently creating separate Stacks. I suspect this is a bit of unknotted fringe on the edge of the code, otherwise known as a bug.)
I use Stacks regularly and find them invaluable. Just remember that each Stack can have only one "image to use" per container, and that that image must be designated the Stack Pick for that container. Since you cannot have more than one usable (roughly speaking) image per Stack per container, you must extract from the Stack images you want to use until all of these images are either Stack Picks or stand alone.
    HTH.

  • Web Journal Templates - Options for Different Ones?

I'd like to be able to create my own Web Journal templates. The ones provided by apple are . . . uninspired. Yes, I know I can tweak anything after export in an HTML editor, but I'd rather do it right the first time. Has anyone looked into Aperture 2.0's templates? Are they extensible or expandable. I cannot find anything the manual or on this forum. Thanks.

yes, mod_plsql for Apache (the core of Oracle 9iAS) allows you to make PL/SQL calls from a browser environment and return HTML. the entire Oracle Portal product is written using this mechanism.
learning JSP from scratch, and learning how to manage security, database connections and record sets would be a daunting task. if you want to learn Java, great. it's my favority web language. however, if you have PL/SQL experience and a need to get information to the web, use mod_plsql and generate dynamic content via PL/SQL and the database.
    good luck,
