Aperture 3 help

I've recently (a week today) got my new MacBook pro and I haven't been able to start Aperture!
I used it for the first time today and the first time, I imported photos (some can't be viewed) and it was "processing" for ages. I reinstalled and it's now been processing for over an hour. Anyone else had this problem?

Hi NickyShakey,
Welcome to the Aperture forum.
Being as your MacBook Pro is a week old have you updated the OS to 10.6.5 and, Aperture to 3.1? Have your run permissions as well?
Being as you have not provided enough information the above is what folks here would want to know. Also, be aware all Apple forums are user helping user, Apple tech support does not reside here.
Cordially,
RicD

When I click Aperture help the window opens without contents. How can I resolve this?

    Hello Willy,
what is your Aperture Version? And what are your "Language & Text" settings in System Preferences?
Assuming, you are using the latest Aperture 3.2.2 and your System is set to "English", the all relevant files for the Help-Window are stored inside your Aperture.app Application Package.
If you open the Help Window in Aperture, it should open the following Web-Page:
         /Applications/Aperture.app/Contents/Resources/English.lproj/aperture_help/index .html
You may check if this file is readable by opening the Aperture Application package:
Select Aperture in the Applications folder and ctrl-click it; then select "Show Package Contents" from the pop-up menu, and navigate to Contents -> Resources -> English.lproj
Check if the necessary files are there and readable, and check the permissions. Try to open the index file in Safari.
If these files are not readable, try to reinstall Aperture.
If these files seem to be o.k. remove the Aperture Preference file, as described in
    Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3805

  • Aperture help not working - getting JavaScript error message

My Aperture 3 has been having a lot of strange issues lately, most, but not all of which have been cleared up by holding down command + option while starting up and going through all three of the choices there.
One problem that remains is the inability to open the Help files. I keep getting the following message:
    “The Help Library requires JavaScript.
If JavaScript is not enabled, you will not
be able to view all the content.”
Help works in all other applications, like Pages and Final Cut Pro. I don’t get JavaScript error messages in any other applications.
I’ve already done an erase and restore from a Time Machine backup, and an archive and install. I reinstalled Aperture, although not by using the Terminal command suggested in the kbase article # HT3805.
If I go the Terminal command route, will I lose all my projects, albums, and editing? What about Mobile Me galleries?
I have a guest user on the computer, and when I log on to that user and open Aperture, the Help Library works fine. So, I know the problem is in my user account somewhere, but I don’t know how to address it. Any ideas?

    Welcome to the forums.
The fact that you have access to java in another user suggests that it is a local setting or preference.
In the applications folder/utilities there is an application Java Preferences, try resetting this and seeing if it works.
If not, try deleting the java preferences file in your users folder
    systemHD/Users/user/Library/Preferences/com.apple.java.JavaPreferences.plist
relaunch the app Java Preferences which creates a new preferences file for you, then try Aperture again.
Let us know how this goes.

  • Aperture Help gives Javascript error

I just tried to open "Help" in Aperture and got this message:
"The Help Library requires JavaScript. If JavaScript is not enabled, you will not be able to view all the content."
    How do I enable JavaSript?
    Thanks

I have also been having Javascript issues since 10.6.5 but only on my MBP. My MBA and iMac seem fine. My problem manifests itself on various websites where javascript actions on buttons just don't happen. I have been on the same sites on my MBA and iMac and these same buttons are working OK. Every time I repair permissions, there are screeds of java and javascript errors and repairs. If I then do a restart, javascript works for a short period of a minute or so and then stops. I get the same issue on Safari and Firefox. Java and javascript are turned on at both browsers. I had no javascript issues prior to 10.6.5.
I just know if I phone up Applecare, I will get the same old fatuous and lazy answer: "Have you done a clean re-install and if not, we suggest you do." Yea right, with the amount of apps I have, that will only take me 2+ days! Back in the good old days, Applecare folks knew what they were talking about and were not just reading off a list.

  • Help! my Aperture help menu is grayed out

I'm just getting my brand new Mac Pro set up, moving from a 2 1/2 year old Macbook. I have a long unsolved problem of having several libraries and their related vaults crashing, rendering inaccessible about 15,000 referenced images and their vaults. Typically what happens is that an Aperture library I've been using for a while quits almost instantly after opening, and the library's vault(s) can't be accessed at all. I've spent perhaps 30 1 To 1 training hours and many hours on the phone with appl care on this problem, and I'm very grateful for all their devoted effort, but we haven't had any luck understanding, much less solving, this problem.
The first time it happened, the library had 6 gigs of images in it from a weekend of shooting. I thought that having 6GBs free (of 55) might have something to do with it, but it kept happening to later libraries even after there were 25 GBs free. With each new library it seemed they would crash at a smaller size, even 1-2 GBs. So my strategy evolved into creating new libraries every few days so they wouldn't crash.
Has anyone had a similar problem and fixed it? Generally most of the folks helping me don't seem to think it's a computer problem, or a software problem, for that matter. Some think my camera (Nikon D70) might have been sending out an occasional corrupted image, but the crashes have continued with a Nikon D 300 I bought new a month ago, making that theory seem very untenable. I'm hoping that using the beastly Mac Pro will help with at least part of the problem. I needed it anyway because my shooting has become pretty high volume recently (3,000 12 MB images per week).
Any suggestions on a fix or a strategy for importing this mess into the Mac Pro? It sounds like the safest way to import is by project. I have about 20 libraries, about 5 of which are crashed, and about 100 projects. I'd really like to have the recommended 1-3 libraries, but it's pretty daunting to think of losing all my metadata and edits to a single crash.... Thanks for your interest.

My above Question should read: "_Several Libraries Quit upon Opening and their Vaults cannot be Accessed_".
(the grayed-out help menu problem was solved by re-launching Aperture.)

  • Basic aperture help? Can anyone help out!?

Iam adventuring into the art of editing photos but having trouble deciding if Aperture is for me. I tried Capture Nx2 but watermarking is a major component ill be using and it doesnt support that. I tried Gimp but it works with X11 and it doesnt seem to be compatable with my Mac. Now iam thinking about Aperture Due to its water marking ability. I fairly take good photos so Ill prob. just be needing the bare minimal tools to enhance my photos. I mean Should i just use I photo or will Aperture be better suited for me?
I also Take pics in .NEF and I know you can't view those settings in Aperture But cant i Just re apply them In aperture?

Just tweak Waynes answer to fit your definition of Gross Profit margin. (just change one cell reference as far as I know) If you need a definition of Gross Profit Margin, please use google and find a web site that gives you what your looking for exactly. I dont want to be responsible for you reporting the wrong answer to your boss.... or teacher, due to miscommunication or misunderstanding on our part as to definitions of financial questions.
If you need instructions on how to enter equations or modify existing ones, you can refer to the numbers user manual, linked to in the help menu i believe. That should give you everything you need.

  • Iphoto to Aperture Help

    Hello everyone,
I have used Iphoto for years and now would like to make the switch to Aperture. I have already imported my 14,000+ photos into Aperture from iphoto, however I see that Aperture is just referencing the original iphoto library. Is there a way to convert the iphoto library to an Aperture library?
My problem with Aperture referencing the iphoto library is now if I import photos from my camera it goes into the Aperture library. Now I have the iphoto library and the Aperture library. I would much rather like to have just one library with all my photos in it. Less confusing and less of a chance I will lose something.
    Thank you all
    James

When you select "import" in Aperture look on the far right of the window.
    You will see "store files".
If you select "in the Aperture library" that should do it.
Guessing for some reason it's set to "in their current location.
    To relocated the current masters:
Moving Referenced Masters to the Aperture Library
You can move referenced images’ masters (referenced masters) to the Aperture library. For example, if you have a variety of masters stored in different hard disk locations but it would be more convenient to work with them all stored in the Aperture library, you can select the referenced images in the Browser and Aperture can move their masters to the library. With the masters stored in the library, Aperture manages all aspects of them, keeping them always available and allowing you to back them up in your vaults.
To move referenced masters to the Aperture library
In the Browser, select the referenced images whose masters you want to move to the library.
    Choose File > Consolidate Masters.
Choose whether or not you want the image files moved or copied into the Aperture library by clicking the “Move files” or “Copy files” button.
Click Continue to confirm that you want the referenced masters moved to the Aperture library.
If you search "moving referenced masters" in the help file. you will see that along with other info.
    good luck

  • Aperture help/questions - File Size, Versions, etc

    Hi,
I am new to the Mac, and after a small learning curve am now loving it. Can’t believe what I missed all those years under Windows. Anyway one of my biggest problems has been workflow and photo management, so I rushed out and bought Aperture without much investigation. I’m still getting to know it, and so far think it’s very good except for the following points, which may be down to my inexperience with the product rather than any shortcomings. I store all my shots as managed files in my Aperture library.
    1. File sizes. Often I use Photoshop for minor/major modifications. There would be few shots that would not require some tweaking if I wanted to get the best image. I have PS3 set up as my external editor. My problem is the huge file size generated after using PS. For example my master file may be around 3mb (jpeg) but my PS file is 45mb! Now if I have a few versions of the PS file, as often is the case, I go from a few megabytes of storage for the image to a few hundred megabytes of storage!! Is there a way around this ??
What’s more if I create a Duplicate Version of the PSD version and do NOTHING it grows again. For example my initial JPEG is 2.78mb, I creat a new version via PS and add some adjustment layers and save the new version back. This new version has now grown to 45.56mb. I then wish to make another different version based on my previous version so I first select the version1 and then Duplicate Version. Now before I do ANYTHING if I save it back I get a new version with a file size of 68.49mb!!! If I do this again, my next version is hasn’t grown in size again, it’s still 68.49mb. What gives ??
    2. Per 1) above can I save back from PS in JPEG and not PSD to bring the file size down. That is open the file in PS via the external editor in Aperture, make some adjustments and save it back as a new version in JPEG ??
    3. Related to 2) above I often want to have multiple PS versions. For example the first one may just have some USM added. Subsequent ones however may have different crops, tonings, etc. So in Aperture what I do is create my first version and add the USM and whatever other standard treatments. Then save this. Then create a duplicate of this version and open the duplicate in PS via the external editor in Aperture. Make some changes then save back. Only now I have 4 files – the original, my version 1, the duplicate of this and my new version based on the duplicate. So I must now delete the duplicate (file three) version . Is there a better way ??
    4. I find it hard sometimes to tell if I am on a master file or a version. Is there a way to definitely tell ? For example on occasion I have gone to delete a version, I get the dialog warning that all versions and masters will be deleted and then I seem to have lost both the version AND the master ?? This seems a bit dangerous.
    5. The vault seems very slow to update when minor changes have been made. For example I created a new version of a master with a minor modification performed in Aperture (saturation set to zero) and then updated my vault. This should be a very quick process as the new version really just consists of some modification information and not the whole file. The update takes as long as if I were to add a few hundred megs of new photo’s to the library ! Is it overwriting the whole vault again, or is it just updating the changes (as I assume it should)
Sorry for the long winded explanations. Any advice/help/thoughts are much appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Simon

quote: "My problem is the huge file size generated after using PS. For example my master file may be around 3mb (jpeg) but my PS file is 45mb! Now if I have a few versions of the PS file"
Check your Export Image settings like quality, size, DPI. Prior to Open with External Editor make the photograph as best as possible, all adjustments, crop, etc and then take it to Photoshop, back to Aperture and print it or upload to web etc. If the photograph is being used on the web there is no need to make a huge file
quote: "above can I save back from PS in JPEG and not PSD to bring the file size down"
You might think about keeping the jpegs jpeg on the export from Aperture to PS instead of jpeg to psd to jpeg.
    4. quote: "I find it hard sometimes to tell if I am on a master file or a version. Is there a way to definitely tell ?"
the "m" key toggles from Master to Version (adjusted).
    5. quote: "The vault seems very slow to update when minor changes have been made."
this is contingent on the system like rpms, processor, usb or fw...

  • Errors ordering prints from Aperture, help?

I've been trying since last night to order prints via Aperture.  They total around 150 prints.  Last night, I would select my images and they would start to upload.  The entire time, Aperture is listed as "application not responding" but the continued to upload.  When finished, I got a message that the order was complete and then got a billing error message.  I tried again and re-entered my card info, same issue.  My billing works fine for the app store (it did before and after the order attempts), it's not a billing issue.
Today, I just entered a different card to see what happens.  Everything uploads and it tells me my order is complete.  However, I never recieved a receipt and there is no record of my order on the order status page.  When I tried to close A3, I get the message "You book is not complete...." so I select to continue uploading...even though the upload is complete. It's being going now like that for 3 hours.  This is crazy.  I just cancelled the order by closing out A3 now for the 8th time in 2 days...each upload takes about 20-30 minutes to complete.  Odd, my connections speeds are currently 22mbps download, 7 upload...a little slower than usual, so the hold up is on Apple's side.
Has anyone had this issue before? Is there a fix for this?  I'm going nuts.  Thanks for any help!

I called Apple Store support.  They were stumped too as I had tried everything they recommended, including chaning billing card that I use, etc.  Then they found a support document about print ordering issues and getting a white screen (which I don't get), this appears to have solved my issue.
Here is what I did. I did have to do BOTH steps.  Please note that "1-Click Settings" is no longer available, so used "Express Checkout" for those steps instead and it was fine.  I was able to put through a test order successfully and then cancel it.  My large order is now uploading.
    Delete the NetServices Keychain item:
Quit Aperture if it is open.
In the Finder, choose Go > Utilities.
Double-click the Keychain Access application in the Utilities folder.
Click Passwords in the Category list on the left side of the window.
Click the NetServices item in the main window and press the delete key to remove it.
    Open Aperture and test.
If the above steps do not resolve the issue:
    Quit Aperture.
Go to the Apple Online Store.
From the Account menu to the left of the Cart icon, choose "1-Click Settings."
Log in to your account with your Apple ID and password.
    Enable 1-Click for your account.
If 1-Click is already enabled, choose Account Information from the Accounts dropdown.
Change the password for your account.
    Open Aperture and test.

In the project where the images should be - is there a current search criteria that is blocking the images from beign shown? It's very eacy to press Control+Number to make the current project show only rated images. At default, the search field above the thumbnail strip should show "Unrated or Better".

  • ColorSync and Aperture Help!

I am trying to print from Aperture and get accurate results at least close to what I see on the screen. I have calibrated my monitor and have a profile set up. I have printer profiles in place, but no idea if they are active. I am very lost on this colorsync, color profile, management idea. I really just want my prints to look like what i see on the screen. Any kind of walk through or help would be GREAT.
    Thanks

Assuming you have aperture set up as standard then the files are not viewable in finder. You need to read the manual to get an understanding of how aperture handles files, and how to set it up to meet your needs.
This part of the manual will tell you about managed vs. referenced files
    http://documentation.apple.com/en/aperture/usermanual/index.html#chapter=3%26sec tion=1
And this part will tell you how to go about importing

  • Updated software in Aperture HELP

I recently updated the software in Aperture using the software update under the Apple Menu. I actually forgot what the update was for, but now when I open Aperture and it asks me for my registration /serial # in reference on the packaging. I put in my serial # and it now says incorrect serial #.
Any help with why this not working now would be helpful. If anything, can I uninstall it and reinstall the original Aperture? If so what will I need to do to save my Library of photos???
    Thanks
    JW

Ech. Good news is, your pictures are most likely untouched, and as long as you still have the vault, you can get them back one way or another. If you want to double check that your pics are still there, you can right-click on your library, go to "Show Package Contents" and then navigate through to see if all your images are still there. Just don't change anything while you're looking through.
Try running through the steps in Aperture 3: Troubleshooting Basics . Odds are, one of those steps will get you fixed up.

  • Saving disk space with aperture, help please?

Ok, let me start by saying I am using a Macbook Pro 17inch model, with a 120gb HD. I just recently switched this summer to Mac over from PC. Now iPhoto has not been very satisfying to me, so that prompted me to buy Aperture. When I used my PC, which I still use now since it is a powerful desktop that I customized and has all my main hard drives hooked up to, I was used to using Google's Picasa software for organizing and searching my photo database. Picasa was very good for me, and I really wish that they had a Mac version of it, but since they don't, I need something to fill that need on my Macbook Pro. As I wrote before, iPhoto does not exactly satisfy me, so I would prefer to find an alternative to it. I am hoping that Aperture can do this, but I am having trouble so far.
Now I only need Aperture for its organizing and database qualities, which I am very impressed by. I do not plan to use it at all for image editing, I leave that to PS, and I don't particularly like the way it creates so many files for each photo and such. My main problem that I am coming across is that when I import my entire photo library (which I have already organized into a very convinient folder heirarchy) into Aperture, it literally doubles the size of my photo library by creating the huge Aperture Library file, and all of the project files within that file. Now I wouldn't mind this too much if it was on my desktop where I have plenty of hard drives to absorb these huge files created, but my desktop is PC for now and can't use Aperture, I plan to get the new Mac Pro next year when my budget can allow for it, but even still, I am not happy with the idea of creating a huge Aperture Library file that essentially doubles the size of my entire photo archive.
Now I noticed this huge file is due to the huge Project files created within the Aperture Library file. Unfortunately, to my knowledge and my trial and error this far, it is impossible to import photos into Aperture without importing them as projects. Am I correct in noting that I can not simply use Aperture for just its organization or database tools? I was really looking forward to getting aperture, but I can not afford to double the size of my entire photo archive on my laptops hard drive, because it is only 120gb and will not be able to sustain a growing photo library like this, especially if it grows at double the size for every photo imported.
Now I do own plenty of external hard drives, and am aware that I can direct Aperture to create its library file on an external hard drive, but it is not too convinient to have to have an external hard drive connected to my laptop every time I want to use Aperture, and not very cost-efficient to have to dedicate a whole external HD just for Aperture's library file, plus I have doubts to how fast the program would run if it is running my library off of an external hard drive.
So in the end, do I need to find another piece of software from an outside company to suit my needs for an image database program? Is it possible to import all my photos into aperture without creating any project files? Please anyone with suggestions for what could help me, please do respond, and thank you in advance for any help.

Thanks for such a quick reply. What you wrote is helpful, and I did consider that at one point... but to go that route would require me to commit completely to using Aperture only for accessing my photos, and would never be able to use other programs to access my photos, I would have to do it all through Aperture, which is not all that bad, but I would like the freedom to access my photos from any program, or from simple folder view. I do see that in the long run it will help conserve HD space, but I really don't like having to commit completely to using only Aperture.
Is it really too much to ask for to have Aperture support maintaining my files in their original location while referencing them in its own library? I don't think that's too much to ask for, every other photo management software is capable of doing this, and at great speeds as well. Even iphoto doesn't create copies of every single item, Google's Picasa on the PC side is EXTREMELY fast and does exactly what I need it to do... I only hope that someone from Apple understands the needs of people like me, as I'm sure I'm not the only one out here who wishes Aperture could work the way I am describing, and hopefully Apple can do something to appeal to this group of people like myself.

  • Duplicates: Can Aperture Help, using Filename searching?

Assuming you don't check, Do not import duplicates, when you import photos. It's my understanding that Aperture still checks for duplicates, meaning it will look to see if there is a Master already in your Library with the same filename. So, if you change the filename of your Masters when you import them, then Aperture shouldn't find any duplicates.
But, if Aperture does find another Master with the same filename and you keep the duplicate import option unchecked, then Aperture should create the new Master with a different filename. I guessing that whatever Aperture adds to the filename is some kind of a standard suffix, like the number 1 or (1), or something.
If you know what Aperture will always add to a filename in the case of suspected duplicates, then couldn't you search for that info in the filename and create a list of possible duplicates?
