APEX and Oracle XE

I am trying to use the APEX (as a substitute for my PHP forms base application) for a new client.
Can I use the APEX and Oracle XE in production, without spending any money for a license from Oracle - i.e. for listener, Web server, etc,?
I already have setup the APEX that works fine on my laptop, able to see and work with the form on the browser, so can I take the same to a server as a production?
Any help is appreciated,
Merdad

APEX is a no-cost database option, so if you have a licensed database (including XE), you can use APEX to develop applications. (Note that if XE is upgraded to use the latest version of APEX, some of the built-in GUI database admin features described in the guides will be lost. All admin will then have to be performed using SQL*Plus or SQL Developer.)
The licensing information covers the features included (and not included) in Oracle XE.
There's a dedicated {forum:id=251} forum. This is the only channel for XE support as Oracle do not support the product through MOS (even for customers paying for support of other database editions).

    Hi everyone,
    I have a problem with the downloading of PDF reports from APEX with Oracle 11g.
    When I try to download a PDF, Acrobat Reader says it can not open the file.
    I have done the same test in an environment with APEX and Oracle 10g and it works perfectly.
    Does anyone know if there is a known bug for version 11g.
    Thank you very much.

  • APEX and Oracle HTTP server

    Scenario
    We are considering using APEX with Oracle 10g. However, we don't have Oracle application server.At the same time we do not want to use the Oracle HTTP server(OHS) on the database server. The propsed application intend to use by approx. 5000 users
    Questions
    As APEX requires just OHS and mod_plsql plugin,
    1. Can we install just Oracle HTTP server and mod_plsql on standalone server? Which CD need to be used?
    2. Can OHS can be licensed separately as Oracle Internet application server(Enterprise Edition) based on processor licensing is expensive and not affordable.However, there are other options like Standard Edition and Standard Edition One as well but do not require any other options except OHS and mod_plsql plugin.Hence, what is the cost effective option to have OHS and mod_plsql as a middle tier component to deploy APEX applications
    Thanks in advance

    All,
    I'm by no means a security expert, but I don't think this is a best practice. I think the best practice is to use two HTTP servers: one in the DMZ and one on the DB server. The one in the DMZ can be a standard Apache install - it acts as a proxy server and does not need mod_plsql. The second should be OHS. This configuration allows you to block ports that are usually used to communicate with the DB from the server in the DMZ.
    Did I get that right or am I way off?

  • Differences between Apex and Oracle Answers (being part of OBIEE)?

    Hi!
    A colleague and I just completed a very simple demonstration prototype in Oracle answers consisting of tables (using filters, columns selectors, etc.) to control asset price deviations in fund management. The prototype is based on a star schema with a couple of facts and about 15 dimensions. We made some dashboards using traffic lights as alerts for price tables and designed a couple of data entry forms. The client says that licence costs are not issue (he is a very large banking institute) since he has special licensing agreements with Oracle. However, he wants to know what the main differences between OBIEE's Answers and Apex are. He is about to install Apex and is not sure if he should also introduce OBIEE's Answers. Is there any official Oracle paper comparing Apex and OBIEE's Answers or does someone know the main differences between both products?
    Thanks a lot for your help!!

    Hi,
    Q2). I assume that is something that is not default on Apex when you install it.
    appshosting have e.g. [Apex builder plug in |http://builderplugin.oracleapex.info/] that is not supported by Oracle.

  • Advice needed on Apex and oracle context

    Hello,
    I'm facing the next issue:
    When I log into my Apex application I set a context site_id with a number.
    I'm wondering if it is needed to set my context on every page or is one time enough?
    At the moment it is working when I set my context one time when logging in.
    On other pages I created an item where I display my context using:
    return pck$context.f_get_site_id;
    FUNCTION f_get_site_id
    RETURN NUMBER
    IS
    BEGIN
    RETURN sys_context(c_ct_context,c_ct_site_id);
    END f_get_site_id;
    So my question is: is it needed to create a process that executes itself on every page with setting the context or is one time enough?
    Kind regards,
    Oli

    Well, for your purpose, you can make that assumption. The net result would be the same.
    In reality, though, each page view is associated with a database session from the database connection pool managed by modplsql. You have no idea which database session you are "attaching" to for a subsequent page view. Thus, you should always set this context for each page view.
    Strictly speaking, it's not a new database session. But for your purpose, you might as well operate like it is. Make sense?

  • Guide to installing XE and Apex on Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 (64 bit)

    I have just been through a time consuming and frustrating process of installing Oracle XE 10gR2 on Oracle Enterprise Linux 5.3 x86-64 and I want to share my experience so that others can benefit from it and overcome the same problems more quickly.
    Prior to starting I had installed OEL 5.3 and been using it for a few days. The system I am using is a home built box with an AMD Phenom X4 955 Black Edition, 8 Gb RAM, Highpoint RR2680 RAID controller with 4 1TB disks in a RAID5 array and an additional 320Gb HDD storing the OS. I am using KDE3.5 on the desktop.
    The main problem I encountered was with SELinux. As I eventually intend to have this system exposed on the Internet I was reluctant to switch it off despite having read extensively about the issues surrounding it and Oracle. I had several failed attempts at the installation process before succumbing to the reality that SELinux and Oracle are not happy bedfellows. I decided to switch SELinux to permissive mode having followed the advice here.
    I found a very helpful guide to installing XE on Linux here as part of the installation of an application called Spacewalk. Note that you do not need to complete the whole Spacewalk installation, but just follow the instructions in the linked page.
    Before you start you need to ensure that the UID of your oracle user is less than 500. Mine was 500, so I used the following commands to fix this:
    usermod -u 250 oracle
    find / -uid 500 -exec chown oracle {} \;
    These change the oracle UID to 250 (but check that isn't already used first!) and the find command searches for all files that were owned by oracle (but weren't after the usermod cmd) and changes them back to oracle's ownership.
    Now follow the Spacewalk instructions until you reach the Server Setup section. Before you do this you need to make a couple of changes to the script /etc/init.d/oracle-xe. I found these changes in various places, such as [link(1)|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=1345771&#1345771] and [link(2)|http://dbataj.blogspot.com/2008/08/lblibrarypath-is-not-set-on-startup.html].
    Note that in link(1) the oracle-xe-selinux packages installed have the same effect as the chcon command on the shared libraries so it isn't necessary to perform this step.
    Open /etc/init.d/oracle-xe in vi (or your favourite editor) and do the following:
    line 49: change /bin/su to /sbin/runuser
    after line 52 (export PATH...) add the following lines:
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    There are further changes recommended to /etc/init.d/oracle-xe in [this post|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=3201491&#3201491] but I haven't done them yet.
    Having done the above changes you can now configure Oracle XE by running /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure (as root!). As I have Apache Tomcat running on port 8080 I changed the default HTTP port to 8500 but kept the listener on its default port of 1521. Once the confuration script is done you will need to change the ports SELinux uses for Oracle as follows:
    semanage port -d -t oracle_port_t -p tcp 9000 - deletes port 9000, which is the SELinux default port for Apex
    semanage port -a -t oracle_port_t -p tcp 1521 - ensure that listener port is OK (assuming you used default of 1521, change accordingly if you didn't)
    semanage port -a -t oracle_port_t -p tcp 8500 - add the new Apex HTTP port to SELinux
    After all this running:
    semanage port -l | grep oracle
    should show you:
    oracle_port_t tcp 1521, 8500
    I ignored the TNSNAMES.ORA part of the Spacewalk instructions and proceeded with the 'Client setup on 64bit platform' and 'Configuring sqlplus' sections.
    For the latter I created a bash script which I have made available in the oracle user and my own user's home directories:
    cat > configure_oracle_10g_xe.sh
    ORACLE_HOME=/usr/lib/oracle/xe/app/oracle/product/10.2.0/server
    PATH=$PATH:$ORACLE_HOME/bin
    ORACLE_SID=XE
    export ORACLE_HOME ORACLE_SID PATH
    LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$ORACLE_HOME/lib:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    export LD_LIBRARY_PATH
    I did this as I intend to install other Oracle databases, e.g. 11gR2, on this box later so I didn't want to put the above in .bashrc.
    Having done the above you should be able to log into the database using sqlplus and the XE setup is complete.
    The upgrade of Apex 2.2 to Apex 3.2.1 was fairly painless so I won't go into much detail about it - just follow the instructions provided by Oracle.
    The only issue I had was right at the end of the process and is documented and answered in [this thread|http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=958611&tstart=0].
    That's it - I hope somebody will find this useful.

    On Oracle Metalink site, there are many documents which says that Oracle 32 bit software works on 32 bits OS and 64 bits software works on 64 bits OS. Official support is only in those combination....
    So there is no good way to help you in your case-XE is 32 bit application with hard codded compiled libraries which most of them would not work on 64 bit OS.

  • Oracle apex and extjs grid table

    hi
    im new to extjs and i was wondering if someone can help me with this;
    i want to create a report in oracle apex and put the output in extjs grid table
    for example i want to view the output of select * from all_objects in grid table
    thnx in advance

    Okay
    To get you started...
    Create a new report template with named rows.
    In row 1 template put this
    ["#1#","#2#","#3#","#4#","#5#","#6#","#7#","#8#"]Assuming you have 8 rows say... and make it conditional based on a PL/SQL Expression like this
    #ROWNUM# = 1Then row 2 template like this
    ,["#1#","#2#","#3#","#4#","#5#","#6#","#7#","#8#"]Conditional on
    #ROWNUM# > 1Then in before row put this
    <script type="text/javascript">
    Ext.onReady(function(){
    var munkyData = [And after rows something like this (based on the emp table)
    var store = new Ext.data.SimpleStore({
          fields: [
                   {name: 'empno', mapping: '0'},
                   {name: 'ename', mapping: '1'},
                   {name: 'job', mapping: '2'},
                   {name: 'mgr', mapping: '3'},
                   {name: 'hiredate', mapping: '4'},
                   {name: 'sal', mapping: '5'},
                   {name: 'comm', mapping: '6'},
                   {name: 'deptno', mapping: '7'}
    store.loadData(munkyData);
    var grid = new Ext.grid.GridPanel({
           store: store,
           columns: [
                     {id:'empno',header: "Employee",sortable:true, width:100,dataIndex:'empno'},
                     {header: "Name", sortable:true,width:75, dataIndex:'ename'},
                     {header: "Job", sortable:true, dataIndex:'job'},
                     {header: "Manager", sortable:true,width:75, dataIndex:'mgr'},
                     {header: "Hire Date", sortable:true,dataIndex:'hiredate'},
                     {header: "Salary", sortable:true,width:50,dataIndex:'sal'},
                     {header: "Commission", sortable:true,dataIndex:'comm'},
                     {header: "Department", dataIndex:'deptno'}
           stripeRows: true,
           width:700,
           autoHeight:true,
           title:'Array Grid',
           renderTo: 'munkyDiv'
    </script>Then create a region to hold it with a source of
    <div id="munkyDiv>
    </div>
    {code}
    This is pretty basic but it should get you going...
    Cheers

  • Down Time for  Installing APEX 4.2.1 and oracle HTTP server?

    Hi, all:
    I plan to install APEX 4.2.1 and oracle HTTP server on 10.2.0.4 database.
    Is there any down time required during installation?
    I mean during installation, do I need to block users from accessing the database?
    Can they do their normal data entry / inquiry?
    thanks,
    John
    ps. There will be server backup before installation.

    Hi,
    Documentation says
    >
    3.1 Recommended Pre-installation Tasks
    Before installing Oracle Application Express, Oracle recommends that you complete the following steps:
    Review and satisfy all Oracle Application Express installation requirements. See "Oracle Application Express Installation Requirements".
    Shut down with normal or immediate priority the Oracle Database instances where you plan to install Oracle Application Express. On Oracle Real Application Clusters (Oracle RAC) systems, shut down all instances on each node.
    An alternative to shutting down the database is to prevent all users from accessing Oracle Application Express when upgrading your installation from a previous release of Oracle Application Express. Oracle only recommends this option in high availability production environments where planned outages are not available. For all other scenarios, the database should be shut down.
    To disable access to Oracle Application Express when the existing installation is using the Application Express Listener, shut down the appropriate application server where the Application Express listener is deployed.
    To disable user access to Oracle Application Express when the existing installation is using the Oracle HTTP Server with mod_plsql, you should either shut down the Web server or disable the Application Express Database Access Descriptor of the Web server.
    For an existing installation using the embedded PL/SQL gateway, you should disable the Oracle XML DB Protocol Server by setting the HTTP port to 0. This can be accomplished by starting SQL*Plus, connecting as SYS to the database where Oracle Application Express is installed, and running:
    EXEC DBMS_XDB.SETHTTPPORT(0);
    Once you have prevented access from Oracle Application Express users, you should log into SQL*Plus as SYS, connecting to the database where Oracle Application Express is installed, and query V$SESSION to ensure there are no long running sessions which would interfere with the upgrade process.
    Back up the Oracle Database installation.
    Oracle recommends that you create a backup of the current Oracle Database installation before you install Oracle Application Express. You can use Oracle Database Recovery Manager, which is included in the Oracle Database installation, to perform the backup.
    See Also:
    Oracle Database Backup and Recovery User's Guide
    Start the Oracle Database instance that contains the target database.
    After backing up the system, you must start the Oracle instance that contains the target Oracle database. Do not start other processes such as a Web Listener. However, if you are performing a remote installation, make sure the database listener for the remote database has started.

  • Problem setting up APEX 4 with WebLogic and Oracle XE

    I'm am trying to install and test Application Express 4 (latest version) on a brand new installation of Oracle WebLogic Server and Oracle XE.
    I have followed the Installation Guide for APEX and have successfully installed all tables and scripts into my Oracle XE schema and am able to connect to the Application Express Workspace login page (http://localhost:8080/apex) but am not able to log in. All styles and images are missing.
    I have followed the steps in the Application Express Listener Guide to install the Listener to my WebLogic deployments and have my i.war and apex.war files deployed but these apparently are not working. When I go to my WebLogic server and view the /apex/ListenerConfigure page I can see the page but get an HTTP 404 "Page Not Found" error and appears to be looking for the WLS's apex/apex directory.
    Note: My Oracle XE / APEX setup is on a separate server than my WebLogic server.
    Also, I see the APEX Listener file (apex-confix.xml) from the install zip file but I don't believe it is being used anywhere, as the documentation never told me what to do with it.
    Any help would be awesome. Let me know what I can provide that I haven't. Thanks!

    Thank you, I was able to use what you said as well as this information here: Installing Apex 4 on Oracle XE:  Almost there, but no cigar yet!

    We are planning server Virtualization and for that i would like to know whether Oracle APEX 3.1 version is compatible with Windows 2008 64 Bit or not?
    Any kind of help is appreciated.

    If we change to Windows 2008 64 Bit do i need to install Oracle 11g http server?

  • Master/Detail/Lookup functionality - ApEx and AJAX vs Oracle Forms

    I'd like to build a master detail form with some lookup functionality and have some of the fields automatically populated. I come from an Oracle Forms and PL/SQL background so I was hoping for some guidance in ApEx and Javascript for how to achieve the same effect.
    If you look at the default Sample Application (DEMO_APP), page 29 has the master record and the corresponding details on the same page.
    The functionality I'd like is:
    1) when a new product is chosen from the Product Name select list, I'd like the Unit Price to be populated.
    2) when the Quantity is updated, I'd like
    a) the Extended Price to be recalculated and
    b) the Order Total to be recalculated
    all before submitting the page. This is pretty trivial in Oracle Forms but I've had limited success with ApEx.
    I've been able to achieve 1) in a single record form but not a tabular form using the techniques from Scott's AJAX generator http://htmldb.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=33867:2.
    I've been able to achieve 2a) in a tabular form using the techniques from Vikas in this thread Tabular form with Ajax
    I haven't had any luck getting 2b) to work.
    So, is my wish list possible?
    If it is, I'd appreciate some pointers and/or code. I don't speak Javascript but I can copy and paste ;)
    Cheers,
    Bryan.

    Hi Carl,
    Ok, thanks for the tip - take a look at http://htmldb.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=24745 login as demo/demo and edit one of the top orders. This will take you to page 29.
    I've changed the 2.0 Sample Application to allow both the unit_price and the quantity to be overtyped. Each column has the 'Element Attributes' property set to onChange="calcTotal(this)" to call the javascript code.
    This recalculates the extended_price (feature 2a above) but the order total (or the report total) is not affected (feature 2b) - how can I change the code to achieve this?
    If I change an existing line item and choose another product from the select list, I'd like the unit_price and the extended_price to change appropriately (feature 1 above) - having to wait until after the form is submitted is not acceptable to my users.
    Thanks for taking the time to look at this - I really appreciate it.
    Cheers,

    If this helps anyone, I was able to set up a reverse proxy to APEX with Apache running on the reverse proxy server and Oracle HTTP server and APEX 3.2 on the APEX hosting server. I want to post this due to there is no
    documentation on this that I can find. Oracle Metalink could not produce any "How To" document either.
    On the reverse proxy server in the httpd.conf file:
    ProxyRequests Off
    SetEnv force-proxy-request-1.0.1
    SetEnv proxy-nokeepalive 1
    ProxyPassReverse /pls/apex/ http://apex_server:8080/pls/apex/
    ProxyPass /pls/apex/ http://apex_server:8080/pls/apex/
    ProxyPassReverse /i/ http://apex_server:8080/i/
    ProxyPass /i/ http://apex_server:8080/i/
    AddType text/xml .xbl
    AddType text/x-component .htc
    OR
    ProxyRequests off
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteRule ^/pls/apex/(.*)$ http://apex_server:8080/pls/apex/$1 [P,NE]
    ProxyRequests off
    ProxyPassReverse /i/ http://apex_server:8080/i/
    RewriteEngine On
    RewriteRule ^/i/(.*)$ http://apex_server:8080/i/$1 [P,NE]
    And in the Oracle HTTP server httpd.conf file of the APEX hosting server:
    NameVirtualHost 999.99.99.9:8080
    <VirtualHost 999.99.99.9:8080>
    ServerAdmin [email protected]
    DocumentRoot "/u01/app/ora11g/product/11.1.0/http_1/ohs/htdocs"
    ServerName reverse_proxy_server.com
    </VirtualHost>

    Here is what I saw :
    I have one Web Server 7.0 instance with the following obj.conf :
    <Object name="default">
    <If $uri =~ "/xyz">
    NameTrans fn="map" from="/" name="reverse-proxy-/xyz" to="/"
    </If>
    <ElseIf $uri =~ "/abc">
    NameTrans fn="map" from="/" name="reverse-proxy-/abc" to="/"
    </ElseIf>
    </Object>
    <Object ppath="*">
    Service fn="proxy-retrieve" method="*"
    </Object>
    <Object name="reverse-proxy-/abc">
    Route fn="set-origin-server" server="http://server1.sun.com:80"
    </Object>
    <Object name="reverse-proxy-/xyz">
    Route fn="set-origin-server" server="http://server2.sun.com:80"
    </Object> ...When I send a request to URI :
    /abc/test1.html : the request gets served from server1 from docs/abc/test1.html.
    /xyz/test2.html : the request gets served from server2 from docs/xyz/test2.html
    Where as when you change obj.conf to (note the change in "from" parameter in "map" SAF)
    <Object name="default">
    <If $uri =~ "/xyz">
    NameTrans fn="map" from="/xyz" name="reverse-proxy-/xyz" to="/"
    </If>
    <ElseIf $uri =~ "/abc">
    NameTrans fn="map" from="/abc" name="reverse-proxy-/abc" to="/"
    </ElseIf>
    </Object>
    <Object ppath="*">
    Service fn="proxy-retrieve" method="*"
    </Object>
    <Object name="reverse-proxy-/abc">
    Route fn="set-origin-server" server="http://server1:80"
    </Object>
    <Object name="reverse-proxy-/xyz">
    Route fn="set-origin-server" server="http://server2:80"
    </Object> ...In this case when I send a request to URI :
    /abc/test1.html : the request gets served from server1 from docs/test1.html.
    /xyz/test2.html : the request gets served from server2 from docs/test2.html.

  • Questions on the comparison between Oracle Forms and Oracle APEX

    Hi All,
    The link below presents information about Oracle Application Express for Oracle Forms Developers, the table at the end of the page shows a comparison between Oracle Forms and Oracle APEX, all the points of comparisons are clear for me except 3 points which are:
    •Locking, what is meant by locking models?
    •Database Connections, what is meant by Synchronous/Asynchronous connections in Oracle Forms and Oracle Apex?
    •Architecture, what is meant by 2tier and 3 tier connections?
    http://www.oracle.com/technology/products/database/application_express/html/apex_for_forms.html
    What I need is a simple explanation for these points without deep details.
    Thanks

    Hi
    That is how I understand that document:
    Locking: Forms, by default, locks a row as soon as the user starts modifying the data. That is pessimistic locking. Apex, on other hand (and optionally forms also) do not lock the record, but before applying any changes checks if the data has changed since the user queried it (what for some reason is called optimistic "locking")
    DB connections: I am not sure why they used the terms synchronous/asynchronous, but the difference is that Forms, by default, keeps an permanent DB connection while the user is using the application, while Apex gets a connection from a connection pool every time a page is requested/submitted.
    Architecture: Forms (in its web version at least) has 3 tiers: the browser, the appserver where the forms service runs and the database. As Apex runs inside the database, there are only 2 tiers: the browser and the database (though you still may need an http server in between which serves static content, I don't think it is considered part of the application in this context). If you are talking about client/server forms, then there are only 2 tiers.
    I hope this helps!
    Luis
