Apparently broken G5 iMac.

Folks:
Got it a few weeks ago, made no additions to hardware, downloaded a few widgets and games, an EPSON scanner driver, installed Halo (the game), almost nothing else. Everything normal until two days ago. (It's a great machine for Halo!) Did some scans, downloaded some Halo mods. Suddenly machine got loggy, like some process hogging the CPU. No obvious reason, no obvious fix, so rebooted.
Now the machine won't boot, goes through the Apple logo - grey screen and hangs at a bright blue screen. Sometimes mouse-pointer control works, sometimes not.
Tried complete disk wipe and re-install OS-X multiple times. Tried resetting PRAM and then wipe and re-install. Tried all suggestions (except restting the power management unit) in Apple tech article 106464 "Your Mac won't start up in MacOS X" and the relevant articles it references.
No standard test or diagnostic indicates any problem, nor is there any error message displayed at any time. Starting up in verbose mode (cmd-v) results in a string of hard-to-decipher messages, none of them obviously alarming, and then the usual blue-screen hang.
Held down option key on boot from disti CDROM, ran Apple Hardware Test, "Extended" option.
The machine will reliably boot up in "Safe Mode" (tech article 107392). Connects to LAN in this mode, so I recovered what little data I had to another machine before doing first wipe and clean install. Seems to do everything I try in Safe Mode except running Marble Blast, which blinks the screen and then crashes.
Anything further I can do before I go back to Apple and say "It's broken"?
Thanks,
Henry

I'm not at all surprised that partitioning and unpartitioning and writing zeroes to the disk had no effect. Looks like the product specialist is hunting around for ideas. Like you originally said, there would never be any need to write zeros to correct a corrupted disk - once the disk is formatted again the disk couldn't care less about the previous content on the disk. After all, why would an old "zero" be less confusing to the disk than an old "one"? Makes no sense at all. Writing zeros is simply a way of securely deleting data.
This does not sound like a software problem - particularly given that it occured out of the blue, and a complete reinstall made no difference. It has the classic symptons of a hardware problem. However, it could be almost anything. But, given the atrocious reliability of the capacitors on the iMac mainboard I wouldn't be surprised if you find one or more bulging or leaking capacitors if you take the back off your machine. The symptons you describe are similar to those people with that problem suffer from. I had this very problem and had my machine replaced as it was the fourth major failure in as many months. If this is your first failure, you'll probably just get a new motherboard out of Apple.

Hi, what's the best way to replace IMAC 27'' glass when broken (latest Imac generation from end 2012) ?  Thanks,

Not sure about the 2012 models but the 2010 ones can be removed in seconds, using a suction cup on the top corner. I use my tomtom to lift it away. It is attached by magnets.
    Hope this helps.

Is messaging via facetime an iOS only  feature that doesnt apply to desktop iMacs or am I (most likely ) missing something?

  • My Ipod Touch AND my itunes are apparently broken

My iPod touch crashed while I was updating an app from app store. I had to get it to shut off and then turn back on with the white apple loading for 5+ minutes.
Then when I access my ipod touch, some things are arranged differently than I had them before. Also, now it seems I have the ability to cause apps to disappear (even the default ones like weather and stocks and itunes) by putting them on the 9th page of apps and putting another one on page 9, thus pushing the last one off onto a non-existent page ten.
I realize this is a problem when I see that I've accidentally knocked my App store app off onto this unreachable page ten.
So I figure I better sync my ipod touch and try to fix whatever is wrong.
Not going to work because now my itunes library is all fracked. See, I have been trying to save room on my laptop by transferring my itunes and itunes library onto an external hard drive. I deleted every scrap of itunes related things off my laptop hoping that when I sync my ipod I can simply access all the itunes material I have saved on my external HD.
I load itunes from the external HD and nothing is on it so...ok, I decide to open up the itunes folder on my external HD and physically drag everything into my itunes program before syncing my ipod again. It loads everything, even things I had deleted previously. It now doesn't match up at all and I am not even sure how to begin to make it exactly how it was.
I try to sync my ipod touch anyway to at least try to correct the problems I detailed at the beginning of this post. ...and I get an error message that my ipod touch is synced with another itunes library. An ipod can only be synced with one library at a time. what would you like to do? My options are "erase and sync" which replaces contents of the ipod with the contents of the itunes library. or "transfer purchases" which copies purchases this computer is authorized to play from this ipod to the itunes library. I don't think transfer purchases is wise. but "erase and sync" seems dangerous.
That seems like I would lose anything I downloaded onto the ipod since my last sync like 2 weeks ago.
At this point there are so many levels of failure that I am not sure what to do.
Any ideas out there? I know this is convoluted but I am sure someone here may be able to piece some logic together from it. Or is my ipod touch basically stuck on whatever I happen to have on it right now?
    .

UPDATE: I soft reset the ipod touch and now all of the apps that disappeared onto the mysterious page ten are now back. However I just now consigned "Stocks" app to oblivion once again so I guess that page ten still eats apps if I squeeze anything onto page nine.
Also my issue with itunes and syncing to this new library is still a problem.
Will I lose all my apps and, for example all my downloaded books for Stanza and ibooks if I were to select "erase and sync" with the newly formed itunes library on my external HD. I have been setting that library up and everything that was on my ipod is in here. But I don't know what the locations all my apps and the preferences or my books in my stanza or ibooks. is all of that self contained in the .ips files?
also, there are only 51 items in my mobile applications folder when I have over 100 apps on my ipod touch....so I guess I am screwed out of over 50 apps files since I can't find them to add to my mobile applications folder for syncing.

  • Apparently my new iMac can't handle GB?

Today I was just playing around with garageband. I have a Line 6 Toneport Ux2 and I was using two mics if it makes any difference. Every once and awhile it would say something along the lines of
    "Disk too slow -10004"
when i was recording. What is going on here?

that can happen if other apps are using your hard drive at a the same time, it's usually best not to be running anything besides GB because recording and playing back audio can quickly saturate your available bandwidth,'
as well, sometimes GB just needs a chance to get everything loaded into memory. once everything is loaded, things may run smoother.

  • HotSync Apparently Broken on "Zire 21" Palm Desktop

    Good Afternoon!
I have a Windows ME Desktop Computer and a "Zire 21 Palm Desktop" device.
Yesterday our "Zire 21" Device failed to Hotsync the information into our computer. The computer was working fine, but the device is unable to Hotsync into the Computer. The Problem was that the Hotsync stalled and freezed completely. We eventually gave up and unplugged it and after a while the battery died.
We recharged the battery. Now when we plug the Device in it says "Connecting to the Desktop Using Cradle/Cable", and then comes up with "The Connection Between Your Handheld Computer and the Desktop Could Not be Established Please Check Your Setup and Try Again", even though it's all plugged in right.
Another thing that happens is that inside the Software Program, the Program on the computer works, but the menu for "Hotsync" has the options blank- you can't highlight them (Unlike the menu selections for "Help", for example).
    Post relates to: Zire 21

I got it to work by opening Hotsync manager from the start menu, which then led to it doing a "soft reset."

  • How do I use an external Monitor to access files on my iMac with a broken screen?

I have an 20 inch desktop iMac with a broken screen. It is the files on the computer that I wish to recover, after that, I can be on my merry way. Unfortunately, VileVault was on (Not my choice), and for some reason, when I target the disc image of the broken mac with a new one, ONE of the accounts "appears" to be completely empty. All of the accouts were running FileVault, but only one (mine) failed to be transferred because it is "empty". I refuse to believe that my files are actually all gone, because theoretically there should be nothing wrong with the CPU itself, just the screen.
Thus my goal is to use a monitor on my broken screen iMac and simply log in and access my files normally, and perhaps pull them out with a USB or something. I have a DELL monitor, and a DVI (The big hairy plug with screws I think) converter that works with my old iMac, along with the male/male DVI cord. However, when I hook it up, nothing happens. I have tried booting the old CPU while holding F7, and option as I read on a forum, and neither produced results.
Does anyone have any ideas on how to 1. Get the monitor to simply show what's going on on the mac? or 2. Pull out my files through some other means?
    Thank you.

If you have a second Mac computer, you may want to try to copy over as many files you can. One way is to use target disk mode.

  • Help for with slow, glitchy (late 2012) iMac

This is an ANSWER and not a request for help.  I didn't know where to post this and apologize for stepping where I shouldn't.
I have a Late 2012 iMac that has been crashing, running slow, and now worse;  all my documents and everything in Finder have disappeared.  I discovered a fix that may help others with similar issues.  I use my iMac for use with Logic Pro X and Mainstage where freezeups are a disaster.  I thought about this awhile and realized I had installed a new USB 3.0 external hard disk a few months ago when this issue began. I began to experience more and more crashes and extremely slow performance.  Beach-balls and slow performance were common.  But the last straw was when everything in Finder disappeared.  My Document and Application folders were empty.  If I clicked on "About This Mac" I saw nothing.    It took two tries to prove my theory, but here's what I did to make "the fix".  I unplugged the USB 3.0 drive and all USB and external devices.  I did a restore of OSX Mt Lion.  All was back to normal.  But after plugging in the USB 3.0 drive, all the afore mentioned problems came back.  I did one more restore, this time NOT connecting the USB 3.0 external hard disk.  Now I have gone some time and my iMac's speed is back to "incredible", no beach balls or any sign of slow performance in recording or running any other app.  Apparently, the 2012 iMac; although spec'ed to be USB 3.0 compatible, may not be all that compatible. Hope this helps someone!

Likely the external drive is bad or defective cable.

Very similar to your page except for the language.
This page does not load (error 404).
I was on chat with Adobe support but they did not solve the problem.
I tried to reinstall and also used 3 different browsers (IE - FF - CH).
I have Photoshop installed on 2 different platforms (W7 and W8), same issue.
Were you able to solve your problem?
Pfondaneche, when you press F1, are you just in the main Photoshop window?
When I press F1 I see it go through a quick redirection and within a small fraction of a second it ends up here:

The specific link you posted does not work for me either, so I'm assuming there's an Adobe server problem somewhere, or maybe a problem with that particular link.
I've noticed Adobe has failed to update a number of its pages for the new Photoshop CC 2014.1 release.  For example, where is a new page that describes where Photoshop CC 2014.1 keeps its preference files?

  • IMAC doesn't recognize my Canon GL2 camcorder any longer ?

I am using a 24 inch Imac with a processor 2.16GHZ intel core 2 Duo running Tiger 10.4.10.
I am using Final Cut Pro version 5.1.4
Up to the present time I've been able to use my Canon GL2 Camcorder for downloading. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, my Imac doesn't boot up properly when I have the Canon turned on. My 3 external drives don't show up on my desk top unless I turn off the Canon camcorder. Obviously, when I launch Final Cut Pro and attempt to log and capture, the viewer comes up with the message, "No Communication" Interestingly enough, when I connect my Panasonic DVX 100B camcorder to my Imac,it works perfectly for downloading. In addition, I have the exact same Imac in a 20 inch screen running the exact same operating system and exact same version of FCP. My Canon GL2 works perfect on this Imac. Can anyone help me solve this problem. I would be forever grateful.
    Henri

Did you have other devices connected to your old iMac while capturing? If not that's why it was working.
One of my cameras is a Canon and besides MacPro and MBP I have also an old iMac. It never worked with external drives connected for the very reason I explained in the link I sent to you.
Canon FW cameras are just likely to mess up with other FW connections on the same FW bus.

  • My iMac can't connect to internet wirelessly

I purchased a 27" iMac in 2013 version 10.8.5. For no apparent reason, my iMac won't connect to the wireless. According to my iMac I have full bars but when i open my browser and try to connect to any website, the page won't open. The browser continues to try to load page for some time and eventually displays "Safari can't open the page "http://<website address>/" because the server where this page is located isn't responding." I had, prior to this problem, and still have, after this problem, other devices connected to the same wireless router without problems. My current wireless router doesn't have a password, however, there are no neighbors close enough to connect to my wireless router. I've restarted my computer, shutdown my computer, restarted my wireless router, turned on/off Wifi to no avail.
Per System Preferences>Network>Wifi, i have a green light with status: Connected. My Airport Utility however switches back and forth between connected and not connected. But regardless of what my Airport Utility says, I can't access wireless. I'm looking at the IP address and my macbook pro is connected to the same IP address without any problems. Does someone know what's going on?
    Please help!

    Hello, littlemold
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
I see you have already processed most of the relevant troubleshooting steps for this issue.  This could be related to your router assigning a self-assigned IP address.  I would recommend going through the steps in the article below.

  • Connect Air to iMac

    Hello!
    Device #1: 21" iMac - Mini Displayport
Device #2: 13" MacBook Air - Thunderbolt Port
After I bought the Air, which has better performance, I have been barely using the iMac - unless I specifically need the bigger display. Anyway, I thought about combining forces and use the iMac as a display for my Air. Is there anyway I can do this? Apparently, the old iMac is not target mode enabled. If that is possible, what's the right cable for the job?
    Thanks!

OK - I received my new 27" iMac and connected my mid-2012 MacBook Air to the iMac via Thunderbolt. I pressed Command + F2 on the iMac to move into Target Display Mode but all I get is a nice big 27" screen of nothing (black screen). Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?

  • Power adapter male pin BROKEN

My son called today with power adapter problems...took awhile for me to figure it out, but the tip of the adapter pin has apparently broken off inside the computers female power port. (the pin is flush with the metal collar while it protrudes about 1/8" on mine) I think it must have broken at the insulation.
If he's very careful, he says he can get the pin in and the battery still apparently charges but the light is always green.
How can he get the broken piece out of the computer and is there a replacement part for just the power jack??

Getting the stuck pin tip out of the computer is tricky. I have heard of people putting a drop of superglue on a thin object (like a nail) and inserting it into the hole, hoping to glue the nail to the pin without getting it on anything else.
I once removed a pintip that was loose in the jack by making a fine wire into a soldering iron tip, then quickly touching the pintip with a glob of solder then turning off the heat. It stuck and I pulled it out. I just didn't have any glue handy.
If you cannot get the tip out, you are likely looking at replacing the DC input board. Also, I have not seen replacement power plugs, so if you cannot fabricate from used adapters, you probably have to get a new power adapter.
