Apple adds rev B G5 iMacs to the repair extension program

Great news.
Apple has recognised the power supply issue affecting our rev B iMacs and has extended the repair extension program accordingly. The program is limited to certain production models, so check the details (EMC 2056).
Here is the relevant support page iMac power supply repair extension
Thank you to everyone who contributed to my initial thread: everyone was always on topic, used temperate language, gave clear descriptions of attempted diagnoses and solutions, and showed tons of solidarity.
Note that those of you who had to pay for a replacement power supply are also eligible for reimbursement (providing you qualify as above).

Hi Miriam
Thanks! I think it was a collective effort - everyone who contributed played a big part by being so focused and professional - there was no ranting or flaming, no OT digression or thread-jacking. Moreover, some people took the initiative by contacting Apple Support in their various countries, quoting the thread, and making sure that gradually the message got through.
And, as you say, Apple has taken notice, and has now acted and done the right thing by its customers. I'm particularly impressed that Apple is offering to reimburse people who had the power unit replaced at their own cost: that's pretty decent behaviour in anyone's book.
So, I'd say it was a great team performance!

  • IMac G5 (2004) logic board and the repair extension program

    Hi,
I know that there are tons of topics about logic board/power supply troubles witht the first generation G5s, and I'm sorry to start yet another new thread, but I still have some questions about this issue.
I have a first generation iMac G5. Long story short...when I first got it the computer would shut itself off sometimes after I had put it to sleep. When I would try to restart nothing would happen, but usually letting it sit unplugged a while would solve the problem (occasionally when I'd restart a different start up noise would sound and the white light would flash quickly). It happened so randomly, that I just lived with it, blaming the problem on my dorm network, or a power failure. A few days ago I tried to start the computer up and nothing happened (just a VERY faint sound like a clicking or ticking or intermitant humming...definatly electrical sounding). I unplugged it overnight, but the next day still nothing. I decided to go through the troubleshooting steps Apple lists online. The internal power button could not start it up and the second LED does not flash, which according to Apple means the logic board needs replacing. Luckily my serial # is covered by the Repair Extension Program, and I'm bringing my computer in tomorrow morning to be fixed (just in time for back to school).
I have become concerned, while browsing the discussion topics, that this fix may not be permenant. I've read a few posts that claim that they are on their third Logic Boards, and this kind of scares me. My parents bought me the computer (our family's first ever Mac) and did not purchase the AppleCare extended warranty (they had heard how reliable Macs were...hmmm.) I didn't even know that I could purchase AppleCare after-the-fact until it was several months after my 1yr warranty expired. I do appreciate the fact that Apple recognized what seems to be a common problem with this generation of iMacs, but I wonder why they did not contact the owners of these machines to let them know that the problem and repair extension even existed.
So I guess my real question is...Does anyone know if, after this repair Apple will replace the logic board if it dies again? Is there a limit to the number of qualified repairs you can get through this Repair Extension program? Also is there any other Extended warranty type thing I can purchase after my 1yr. warranty is up.
Sorry the post is so long...I'm just scared about the fate of my beloved Mac.
    iMac G5 (2004)   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

Oh man, am I actually relieved reading this thread. Just took my baby (iMac G5 first generation) in for repairs today, not knowing what was wrong with it. Luckily my serial numbers are in the range, so I'm crossing my fingers that they're going to cover this.
Brief synopsis of what happened, in case it differs from anyone else's
About a month ago, my iMac started to not wake up from sleep mode. Instead of waking up, it would just shut itself off. This continued for about 2 months, with me thinking nothing of it. Then, instead of shutting itself off, the computer would restart when I attempted to put it to sleep.
Then, last night, I was surfing the net and all of a sudden the power just failed. No noise, no "grey screen", we're talking like a millisecond later the screen was black. I treid unplugging the machine and then plugging it back in while simultaneously holding the power button to reset the PSU and still nothing. At that point it was about 1:30 in the morning, so I just went to bed not wanting to deal with it until the next day. By the time I woke up, there was a distinct smell of electrical components burning (in grade 8 shop class we used to hook up resistors to the voltage generator and crank the juice up until they fried when teach wasn't around, so I distinctly remembered the acrid stench :P)
I opened the back up and did the LED check, and #2 wouldn't even blink. So I took it in and they said they'd have to get back to me and that's where I stand now.
The thing that concerns me is that if some of the components fried that there may be possible damage to the motherboard etc. Luckily I'm not too worried about the hard drive because it did still boot up and all. People that have experience with this, what usually happens with files on your HD after a logic board replacement? Are they usually fine?
The other thing that concerns me is that apple has made no effort to contact me, and it will be 2 years after the purchasing date come November 1, 2006. I'm lucky that I caught this now before it was too late.

  • HT203254 were you able to get the faulty VGA chip replaced after the repair extension program expired? how have you achieved it?

i am currently in europe. my MBP17"  was manufactured after may 2007 and was in service both in the US and europe between April 2008 and Dec 2010 three times in total, while still under warranty. none of these times was the motherboard exchanged for one with a non-recalled VGA GeForce8600GT chip.
now the chip died and the computer no longer loads. Apple authorised service provider says they are not able to even order these parts for me any more as the machine is in vintage status. apple claims to no longer stock them. apple support line claims they're very sorry, but they cannot help as the repair extension program is over.
non-authorised cervice centers would happily service it for more than $300.
what shall i do here, as investing another $300 here makes no sense, please help?

  • IMac G5 Repair Extension Program

Parents have a first-gen iMac G5 that just died outside of the arbitrary 3 year window (serial number included in repair extension program). Local certified Apple Repair Center refused to even look at the machine and were clueless about the Repair Extension Program. Machine exhibited signs of strangeness months before the 3 year mark but parents didn't report it because it was still usable, didn't have Apple Care and they were never informed of the repair program. Not to mention the machine was back-ordered so the date on the receipt is months before they actually received one.
My question is, has anyone heard any status on the support of machines outside the 3 year window ("Apple will re-evaluate based on repair numbers, etc....")? Anyone had any luck getting machines of that era repaired?
Seems funny to me that registered customers are not informed of recalls.

It's only called a "warranty extension" for legal reasons (i.e. to avoid lawsuits, not admitting manufacturing flaws, etc).
Already called Customer Relations twice and was told we were SOL (my words). The first time my parents called the rep tried to tell them they were going to be charged even for questions about the problem because they did not have Apple Care; when they were transfered to a tech he faked trying to fix the problem (machine not completely dead at that point) by telling them to run the permissions repair utility even though they spoke about the extension program by name -- said nothing of replacement parts, etc.

  • How can you remove old conversations from the iMac. Even when I remove them they return when I start a new conversation with the same person. Only happens on iMac with the Beta iMessage program

How do you remove an old conversation using  the Beta iMessage on an iMac. When I open a new conversation with the same person the old conversation comes back

    Hi,
Previously iChat had tried a Last Chat/IM option when using Saved Transcripts - which itself was an option.
iChat has also tried "Saving" the Last Chat by leaving a Chat window open and using something similar to the Lion method of showing an app in the state is was closed in.
In Messages the option to Save Transcripts has been removed and Chats or all types are saved as a matter of course.
What this tends to mean for your iChat style Buddy Chats is that it opens all the Transcripts  for that buddy as a sort of History you can scroll back through if you want  (I have  some Buddies with saved chats gong back to 2004)
With the Syncing of iMessages with iPhones and iPads (or Touches) then it seems this works slightly differently.
Although you can delete the chat and the contents of the Chat as separate action it is true that in the Beta as soon as you connect to the same Contact that the contents of the previous chats are shown to you.
I have found that Messages stores a data base of info on iMessages in Your Home Folder/Library/Messages
I have found that deleting this chat-db removes the "History" that keep popping up.
By default the Saved "iChats" are also stored in the Home Folder/Documents/iChats (At least this is the default place iChat used and they go to the same iChats folder where ever you had it)
Some people claim removing iMessages saved here stops the "History" reappearing.
In Lion the only access to the Home Folder/Library is via the Finder's Go Menu and hiding down the ALT key

O.K. Now what's wrong? I just got the IMac G5 back today. Plugged it in with the key board and mouse attached only. It will not start up completely. The light comes on, the screen is black, then the fans speed up. Pram reset, safe mode do not work. Tried several times.
    Any help appreciated,

That is so surprising! And wow, my heart goes out to you. That really *****! BUT, there may be a very good reason or at least one that Apple didnt catch intially. Yea, I would most certainly call AppleCare now, if you havent already.
Let us know what happened if you think of it. I'd be interested to see what happened. Maybe this might be time to ask for a replacement. I know for me and my first generation iMac G5 it was a long, long frustrating relationship. I swear I dont think any of the early ones are safe. It just seems like such a troubled, flawed model. I am glad now that they fixed the issues. My 2.1 iSight iMac G5 has worked flawlessly for the 5 months I have had it. ( Knock wood.)

  • IMac Repair Extension Program

    Good for Apple

I think this a a great thing for Apple to do. It's nice to see a large company step up to the plate and acknowledge there is a problem, and then take the appropriate measures to deal with it. Too often these days it seems like companies will spend more time, and money, to try and ignore the problem, than take care of it.
I have already had the power supply replaced on my Rev. A machine, and recently have noticed a bulging capacitor, so last week I purchased the extended Applecare warranty. After this announcement Applecare may seem a little worthless, but at least I know I am covered for THREE years, on EVERYTHING.
Thanks again Apple for doing the right thing.
    Eric.

  • Stuck in the Repair Bin of the Apple Store

Just wondering if anyone else has had their machine get "stuck" at the Apple Store waiting to be shipped to the repair depot.
My machine (CTO Dual 2.0) didn't have the CPU whine, had a touch of the inverter whine, but was otherwise fine. However, in the third week, it developed a problem with the ram attached to the video card (pretty interesting issue, actually) and the Mac Genius said it needed to be sent in... This was on a Friday at noon..
As of yesterday (Monday) the machine was still "waiting for shipment". I called last night and was told that it shipped out...but this morning, the online status page still showed "waiting for shipment". I called the store and was told that it didn't ship out last night but had, in fact, gone out this morning, but the online status page still hasn't updated...
I'm guessing/hoping that they didn't have the correct return box and that added to the delay (and praying that they didn't otherwise misplace my machine), but am concerned that the site hasn't updated...
Has anyone else experienced lags/delays like this?
    Sigh...
    Thanks.

My first MBP was a whiner and it had a deffective superdrive. I sent it in with the lady telling me it would be no later than 2 weeks till a replacement came.
I checked the repair status online, and it said it was expected a month from the day I called it. So as you would guess I called back in much frustration and the man told me I would have to wait in the line like everyone else because they were so busy.
Even more frustrated I called again. This time a very timid lady was on the phone and I asked her to send me to the production department where I had to convince someone there that it was their fault and I shouldnt be punished for their mistake. I happily received my MBP 4 days later.
2 days later I wasn't so happy. The whine drove me mad and the pringle lid was just unacceptable. Instead of having Apple send me a replacement, I just demanded my money back and I would go to mystore and buy one myself.
The Sage Continues later this week!

  • Am i Eligible for the logic board program?

My ibook falls into the serial numbers that are eligible for the free repair. But this line taken from the website confused me a little.
How long is the Expanded iBook Logic Board Repair Extension Program available?
The program covers affected iBooks for three years after the first retail sale of the unit or until 18 March 2005, whichever provides longer coverage for you. Apple will continue to evaluate the repair data and will provide further repair extensions as needed.
I purchased my ibook in the year 2002, am i stil eligible for the program? There are some lines on my ibook screen.

I purchased my ibook in the year 2002, am i stil eligible for the program?
Not officially, no. A few people have successfully approached Apple Customer Relations, requesting that they make an exception to the three-year rule. However, I would suppose that the farther removed the iBook is from the three years, the less likely they are to make an exception to the rule. Yours is five years old (or nearly so). You can try calling Apple and requesting to speak with Customer Relations and ask them to make an exception to the three-year rule, but I wouldn't hold out a lot of hope. That said, you have nothing to lose by asking.
    Good luck.

  • Does the extension program fix in this case?

    Hi,
I'm a Ph D. student owner of an Ibook G3, 800 combo drive. I bought it on May 29, 2003 in USA. I got some problems with the video but nothing so serious. Some times it got freeze but I was able to deal with those issues for a while. I've using this computer mostly for my research and writings. By April the logic board began to have a new and a more serious problem. Some times it had power and some times it did not. I was able to make it work and on April 28 I took it to the apple store. When I went there my computer was working okey. One of the people at the Apple Store in Manila (Philippines) turned it off. After that it has been impossible to make it work again. After a week I received the unit back with the diagnostic that the logic board is dead. I found the documentation related to the logic board repair extension program for Ibooks. I went back to the store and they received the unit again. Today they told me that the problem is the logic board which is dead but that it is not cover by the extension program. The reason is that the problem with my mac is related to a power issue and not to display issues. I do not know what to do. I called to Singapore today also and they told me that the serial number of my unit fits well under the guarantee. Also, the date in which I bought it. However I need to demonstrate that it really had display problems in order to get the guarantee. How do I do that now? My Ibook is not working anymore. I need to write my disertation and I am wandering what should I do. How is it possible that an Apple logic board may endure less that three years? I'm really affected for this problem. At the end I do not have any computer at all and before three years I'm loosing U$ 1,350. I love Apple computers but this issue is badly affecting me in my finances and worse in my studies. Any idea?
    Riad

I would like to post here that I finally got back my computer. That is not possible. On Thursday I received another phone call (I think from Singapore). A lady told me that her boss was supervising the soon reparation of my unit. They expected that it would be repaired in no more than in three working days. Since I have no received any call from Manila I decided to contact them today. I talked with Mr. Lito (the person on charge of the reparation store), and he told me that it is not possible to repair my unit because they do not have the original receipt of the machine. I explained to him that I submitted the receipt to GreenBelt Apple Store in Manila. He surprised me when he said that the Apple store does not have my receipt. They lost it. I explained to him that my unit is there with them because I was able to give to the Apple Store the receipt of my purchase. It is for this reason that they receive the unit.
I do not know. It is difficult to deal with these issues when you are not in your own country...
I had to call to Apple (1-800- 7666-7666) again. They will contact Apple Singapore.
Now, what is going to happen?
I do not know. I do really expect that again Apple Singapore will do something to correct this mess.

  • About the PowerBook G4 Memory Slot Repair Extension

I was reading in the forum that many people have problems with the lower slot memory.
I am among these people too and as many of them my computer is a little bit older than those that are inside the program
my computer was bougth on may 2004 serial number W8418....
Since I think there are many people with the same problem, is there any way to ask to APPLE to extend the"slot repair extension program" also to the computers bought on 2004?
thanks in advance for your help

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
This is an oft discussed issue. You can try to sign the petition here:
    http://lowermemoryslot.editkid.com/
Although given how long this issue has been going, I don't know if the person managing the petition is planning on submitting their petition anytime soon.
Your other option is sending Apple feedback here:
    http://www.apple.com/contact/feedback.html
    And contacting Apple corporate directly:

Don't expect any reaction. You can try zapping your PRAM and resetting your power manager, and possibly even replacing your clock battery which an authorized service technician can do. Also getting a new logic board either from AppleCare, or one of these resources may help:

Resetting the power manager is described here:

I have purchased a new iMac, with Safari 5.0.5, but it won't retain bookmarks, I thought I can download a new Safari from Apple. So I deleted Safari from the application folder.
Then I tried to download Safari from Firefox but after finish download, what I got was a dmg file, with a pkg icon (an opened box) and it can't be installed. Same with Google Chrome.
My question is: how can I download Safari? And will it retain bookmarks?

Reinstall Safari from the Optional Installs.pkg on your Mac install disc that came with your iMac. Or in your case, you use Pacifist to extract the Safari app from the .dmg file.
    To bookmark a webpage:
Go to the webpage you want to bookmark. If you use tabs, you can open multiple webpages in tabs to bookmark them as a collection.
Choose Bookmarks > Add Bookmark, or Bookmarks > “Add Bookmarks for These Tabs.”
Type a name for the bookmark or collection in the dialog that appears.
Specify where you want to keep the bookmark or collection. You can add it to the bookmarks bar, the Bookmarks menu, or to a collection if you have created any.
    Click Add.
To add a bookmark quickly, click the Add button in the toolbar, or drag the webpage’s icon from the address field to the bookmarks bar.
To see your bookmarks, choose Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks.
In the future, rather then deleting an app, come here and ask for help first. More times then not, you will save yourself time and trouble.

    Hi All
Does anyone know how to enable the "Delete" key for logging on the Windows 7 partition on the latest iMac, via the latest Apple wireless keyboard - the standard wired apple keyboard works fine via this key but not the new wireless keyboard?
    Many Thanks

Holy crap, this fixes the issue.  At least temporarily it has.  I should add that my issue was single finger forward/back swipe stopped working on the magic mouse in Firefox since Mavericks came along.  I have been fighting this since I upgraded to Mavericks a few months ago.  Thank you, tbirdvet.  You have no idea how much easier you just made using my iMac again.

How do I add an Epson printer connected to an iMac on the network to the printer list on my MacBook Pro? I cannot get it to show up in the list for printers to add.

That only works if the printer is itself a network printer. You can't do it if it is directly connected to another computer on the network unless it is configured to be a Shared Printer on the other computer.
