Apple Configurator and MDM

Have 25 ipads to setup in a college environment with apps to be installed of course.
Am I right to assume that if using apple configurator on a mac to do the initial setup, create backup and restore to other ipads that if supervised is used, only that mac can be used to make changes ?
Also, we are implementing the web-based Mobile Deployment Solution called Meraki whereby apps can be pushed out by this.
If using apple configurator to do the initial setup, will this affect Meraki MDM in anyway ? i.e. removing or adding apps or anything else ?
I have to update the IOS on ipads to latest version. I've been told that I need to use Apple Configurator for the intial setup and then college can push apps via Meraki. I have never done this before, but been reading up and have read about push certificates and VPP. However, another question I would like to ask is, if I don't setup the VPP on the mac, can it still be done via MDM and do apps need to be downloaded onto the mac. All very vague. If using apple configurator and then selecting to install apps, can these just be downloaded from the app store instead of itunes. I'm trying to think of the best way to go about this, or whether to just update IOS on each ipad and then push apps via MDM, or install apps via apple configurator and restore to all ipads via a backup. Confusing !

  • Apple Configurator and Mass Device Set-up

I’m having some issues with iPads using the Apple Configurator and a Bretford Cart.  I submitted this to my lovely Apple account team, however they have not acknowledged or replied to me.  I could really use some help with this one!! PLEASE
I have a deployment of about 1000 iPads.  The initial deployment is over but we collect them and redeploy them.
Here is what I do with the cart.
    Load iPads in to it.
Update to the latest iOS (if approved internally).
Restore a backup of an iPad configured with customized wallpaper.
Install a profile that contains a webclip to our MDM install.
The devices ARE not supervised, nor do I want to supervise them in any way.  We have an MDM and do not need or want device supervision.
This used to work for me with minor issues.
    Now I’m having some problems.
    In particular:
On some devices, I no longer get the choice to select “Next” at choose a Network connection.  Sometimes I get it and it allows me to go to choose “Continue without Wifi” and I’m good to go.  Sometimes I don’t have this choice and that is an issue.  Why is this happening? (Incidentally, when I erase all content and settings of a device that HAS allowed me to choose Next and Continue without Wifi, when it is restored, the option is no longer there.)
After the update and backup is restored, I have to go through the Hello and Welcome screens before I can install a profile. Why?
When I install profiles, it allows me to only install 1 profile at a time.  This does not work for me.  Why did this change in Apple Configurator?
What used to be a fairly simple process is now becoming kind of a pain.  I’ve searched Apple forums and it seems others are having the same issues.   Are you able to help or give advice on a better way to do this?
I have about 1000 iPads deployed and need to find the smoothest way to go about doing this.
Thank you for any help or advice.

Yes, an MDM is your best bet. If you aren't currently using an MDM and want to try one out, there is a free MDM solution by Meraki called Systems Manager. http://www.meraki.com/products/systems-manager/ . They have a location feature that might help you. The MDM can also allow you to lock the screen or do a remote wipe to keep the thief from accessing the data on the iPad.
You can also have your users sign up with the Find My iPad app http://www.apple.com/ipad/find-my-ipad.html to help locate a stolen iPad.
As ryanm512 said, if you Supervise your iPads in Apple Configurator the iPads can only be unsupervised using the computer that Supervised them.
However, everything is out the window if the thief resets the iPad when its not connected to a network. Once wiped clean, the MDM and Find My iPad won't work.

  • I have set up our school ipads to be supervised by Apple Configurator and am using VPP to buy apps.  I now find the supervised ipads do not allow the pupils to download photos or movies etc. Any suggestions would be great please.

I have set up our school ipads to be supervised by Apple Configurator and am using VPP to buy apps. I did this initially as our school internet connection was stopping us from being able to update the IOS and our County was offering a managed system, Lightspeed, which took control of every device in school which proved very expensive.  I now find the supervised ipads do not allow the pupils to download photos or movies etc. As we frequently use the ipads as cameras this is causing us a problem. We have a school imac that I use to keep the devices updated with Apple Configurator (not connected to our network), and this doesn't seem to offer any solution to download them either.  I was told there was a setting in Apple Configurator to allow other computers to download from supervised devices, but I can't see it anywhere.  I am very new to this so any advice or help would be greatly appreciated please.

I assume you are wanting to take the photos and movies off the iPads?
Connect the iPad to a Apple computer. Open "Image Capture". Any photos or video can me imported to the desktop or other location on your computer.
I had this same problem last year and as we have no wifi I asked lots of people at Apple what I could do - no one provided this answer (a little unbelievable!). If you have wifi using something like dropbox would be an easier solution.
    Hope this helps

  • 170 iPads, Apple Configurator and Apple ID - HELP!

    Hey Guys,
so i work for a school and i have 170 iPads that need to be deployed. we are using apple configurator and supervising the devices.
Everything has gone great for 23 that i have already done and handed out to teachers etc, except for the minor problem of updating the applications.
When they go to the update the apps it asks for an apple ID and passowrd, at this point in time its asking for my Boss' Apple ID password. Is there anyway of stopping this or will i have to get the teachers to input there own apple IDs on startup of the device?
    Thanks for all your help.

This happens more often then not lately and I am not sure why. But this is what you can do to fix it after it happens.
Do you have tens - or even thousands- of apps trying to download? You
need the account’s “queue” deleted by Apple.
    1.       Navigate to: http://www.apple.com/support/itunes/contact/
    2.      Click on "Contact iTunes Store support"
    3.      Choose "Connecting and Downloading"
    4.     Select "The topic is not listed" and enter the subject "Download
    Queue" and continue.
    5.      On the next page choose to email support.
    6.     Create a message that says something such as:
"I redeemed codes using Apple ID [email protected] & iTunes is
trying to download hundreds of copies of the same app.  Please clear out
    my download queue."
    7.      Wait for a response from Apple.
    8.     ****After the queue is deleted, be sure to delete the computer’s
trash. All the extra app copies will fill the MacBook Air’s storage.****

I'm trying to prepare some new iPads using Apple Configurator and the download of IOS8 failed.
The error in Apple Configurator is "Unable to download iOS 8.0. The firmware image was corrupted. Please retry the operation."
Is there a way to get the Apple Configurator to try to re-download iOS 8?

Apple Support had me delete the image file from the following location:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.configurator/Data/Library/Caches/com.apple.confi gurator/firmware/
    The file name was iPad3,4_8.0_12A365_Restore.ipsw
I deleted this file and ran the prepare again and it download the iOS 8 ok and successfully prepared the iPad.

  • HT5188 Apple Configurator and Apple ID

I recently downloaded Apple Configurator and upon setup, I entered an apple ID.  Now I was told that was the incorrect Apple ID for the VPP.  How do I change the apple ID In Configurator?

Unfortunately, the menu option that was available in earlier versions of Apple Configurator is no longer available But here's how I've been doing it using the latest Apple Configurator 1.1.2.
First, go into iTunes and authorize with an Apple ID (iTunes -> Store -> Authroize this computer). It doesn't have to be a VPP Apple ID…just an ordinary Apple ID used to associate with the app. Then download the app(s). They will go to ~/Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications. These apps will be linked to the Apple ID you authorized in iTunes. Next go into Apple Configurator and add the apps on the Prepare -> Apps screen. When you try to add the app in AC (clicking on the "+" at the bottom of the screen), you should be prompted to enter an Apple ID and password (see screenshot below).
It will say that "This Apple ID will be used to redeem VPP codes…" It is NOT the Apple ID used to purchase the VPP codes… The VPP codes can be redeemed by any Apple ID.
You must enter the same Apple ID and password that you used to download the app in iTunes, and you should be good to go.
    Hope this helps!!

  • Apple configurator and App not authorized

Today was my first day putting paid apps in. I have 4 different paid apps, and 3 codes through VPP for each of  the apps.
    > The first one I did went fine. All three iPads have all have that app. Now, the last 3 apps only went onto 2 of the 3 iPads. It is telling me with a little yellow triangle "App not authorized." When I click on the number and open the screen where you import the spread sheet with codes I see this "This code has already been used. Each code may only be used once." However it is not linked to a device like the other three.
    > Have you run into this? Any suggestions on what I should do?

+1 for what bcpoole said. Redownload the spreadsheet and reimport into Configurator.
Also you need to be sure to authorize iTunes on the sync computer with the same Apple ID that you are using in Configurator. Here's how I've been doing it using Apple Configurator 1.1.2.
First, go into iTunes and authorize with an Apple ID (Store -> Authroize this computer). Download the app(s). They will go to ~/Music/iTunes/Mobile Applications. Then go into Apple Configurator and add the apps on the Prepare -> Apps screen. When you try to add the app in AC (clicking on the "+" at the bottom of the screen), you should be prompted to enter an Apple ID and password. Use the same Apple ID and password that you used to download the app in iTunes.

  • Apple configurator and paid apps without VPP codes?

Is it possible to use the Apple Configurator to install paid apps by using Gifted apps?
We cant use VPP as it is not available outside the US and iTunes support suggested the following:
"Create separate accounts for each Apple ID, and there should be one designated "Purchasing account", which can purchase all of the necessary apps as gifts, and then the redemption codes can be sent to the correct Apple IDs"
Does anyone have other workarounds for this situation in case this is not possible?
    Thanks.

    Hi Lesli,
You could use an MDM solution like Meraki Systems Manager (free) http://www.meraki.com/products/systems-manager/ . Purchase VPP codes for your 1:1 teachers. Add the VPP codes to Meraki and distribute to teachers. That way the teachers wouldn't have to tie back to the AC computer. Meraki (and other MDMs) can do things wirelessly.
You could also email VPP codes to the teachers and have them redeem the codes with their own Apple IDs.
But to answer your question, yes you should create a separate VPP order for carts vs your 1:1 teachers.
    Hope this helps!

  • Apple Configurator and Wifi

My school district recently purchased some iPads and I am in charge of getting them set up for student use. I am diving into Apple Configurator to get them started. I want them to connect to our enterprise wireless, which is Aruba Networks. We utilize the LDAP service on one of our Apple servers for clients to authenticate and use EAP-GTC protocol. I am able to, and always have been to, select the wireless network in system preferences, type in my credentials to authenticate, then am prompted to accept the certificate and wha la, I'm on, no problem.
I have made a profile with in Apple Configurator to configure the iPads to join the wireless using all the same credentials I use to manually set it up. I have also added the certificate for the network to the profile. After running the workflow in Apple Configurator, I check the iPad and it is not connected to the wireless, even though I do have "Auto Join" selected in the profile. However, if I go into system preferences and select the network, I am not prompted for my credentials but I am prompted to accept the certificate, then I am online.
Now one might think that is good enough and if I were distributing these to teachers I would probably tell them to do just that but with students, I don't want them messing around or even know that the system preferences app exists. So I guess my questions is, why do I still have to accept the certificate before it will join the network?
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

If others stumble on this keep in mind that wireless configurations vary greatly across organizations so guidance on proper configuration varies greatly across setups. The best thing to do is connect to your network with an unmanaged device, log every action from network name to security type to authentication certificates, etc. Every touch point is a setting in your MDM or Configurator you will need to set up.

    Hi All
I am new this community . I have a doubt about Apple Configurator profile vs MDM profile .

  • HT5188 I am using Apple Configurator and would like to put iMovie on our 30 iPads--need redemption codes?

I am finally sucessfully using Apple Configurator. Our teachers would like to have iMovie on the iPads In order to use Apple Configurator I need to have redemption codes.  I am at a loss as to how to get these codes.  Any suggestions.

You would be wanting VPP codes (volume purchasing plan). Here is where you want to go: http://www.apple.com/education/it/vpp/
Enroll and setup which app or apps you want. After purchasing, apple will send you a vpp spreadsheet that you import into configurator. The guide at the site listed above will help.

  • Using apple configurator and VPP purchases,

Can you purchase 20+  apps on computer using apple configurator, but use only 10 with this group and use the rest on another computer running the configurator? I assume you would have to download again, but unclear if you can after using with config app.

Yes, there are two ways to do this.
    1) just download the same spreadsheet into Configurator on two different Macs. They can have the same Apple ID or different Apple IDs. As each one installs apps, it tries the redemption codes in the list and skips over ones that have already been used.
    2) Make a copy of the spreadsheet, open both in Numbers or Excel, and delete the first ten codes in one and the second ten codes in the other. Then import each into each copy of Configurator.
Remember that you'll need to use one redemption code to buy the app in iTunes for each AppleID you use, on top of the codes you need for installing the apps on devices.

  • Apple Configurator and iPad Set issue

    Howdy Folks,
    I have a dilemma.
I work at a Business School and we have 30 ipads managed (supervised) by Apple Configurator via a Mac Book Pro.
I had (still have) paid apps on this class set.
Unbeknownst to me, I upgraded the Macbook Pro to Mavericks thinking that the upgrade would work. Unfortunately it didn't and I had to re-install Mountain Lion. I'm not going to upgrade to Mavericks due to a Safari bookmark sync issue with another set of 30 ipads not managed by Configurator.
I'm going back through my purchases on the apple volume purchases website and I've downloaded the spreadsheets again.
The apps all have worked fine except for Dictate & Send (Dictamus). After importing the spreadsheet, it only has 1 license available. When I attempt to plug in the supervised iPads, I get a message saying 'computer says no'. I'm assuming this is because they were associated to the Mac before I had to re-install the OS.
I have no backup or files from the previous OS install.
I'm also assuming that in order to get the iPads to talk to the new configursator, I'll have to wipe them and then re-associate them with the new configurator. That will also mean that i'll lose the apps on them including Dictate & Send.
My question is ' Can I recover those licenses on the iPads for Dictate & Send, or do I need to purchase another 30 copies?'
Any help you can provide would be appreciated,
    Regards,
    Frank.

You don't need seperate IDs.  When you log into icloud.com and use Find my iPhone, you'll be able to see a list of every single device associated with that ID.  Just click on the devices tab in the top left.  Here you can see I'm logged in with a list of many devices:

  • Apple configurator and ios 6.1 cannot install config profile

I'm using the Apple Configurator v1.2.1 to install my enterprise app into iPad 2's. First of all, I am unable to upgrade from iOS 6.0.1 to 6.1.2. It either fails or gets stuck and I have to "stop". My work around is to upgrade via the device (which is actually pretty fast). My big problem is that I am also installing provisioning and configuration profiles, which include files for the app. Every things seems to go ok, the app and all the data installs properly, so does the profisioning profile, until the end where the configurator tells me to "tap device to install profile" but the profile prompt never appears on the iPad. The iPad goes into setup as if it's a new iPad and the config profile nevers gets installed. I do get a warning saying it can't install the profile. I'm forced to update the configuration manually. I'm updating about a dozen each time, so it's starting to get tedious as well as error-prone. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Use whatever method you wish to update iOS
    Go though,the setup as needed
Then try apple Configurator to install your profiles
From memory updating iOS with apple Configurator
Causes the setup to run like a new device the same if you used iTunes to update
As the complete OS is installed
However it will only download iOS once, providing all your devices are the same
Updating iOS on the device still has a setup but it's only for iCloud
And you'd have to download the (smaller) update each time
I would think it is the iOS update and setup that's causing your profiles etc
to fail there maybe to much going on at the same time
