Apple File Service is dead (Lion)

After the upgrade to Lion, my iomega NAS was not available. The reason for that is well known, Apple has changed the AFP protocol. I followed the instructions from that respective support document to enable the old protocol. See here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4700
I was able to get access as a fileserver to the NAS, but time machine did not work.
Now, all of a sudden, Apple File Service is totally dead. Other Macs are able to access my Mac Book via AFP, but I am not able to access these macs, despite the fact, that these macs pop up in the left finder pane.
System Prefs are checked, I checked the files in the system library (launch daemons), everything is in place. I made several restarts.
I have the impression that the AFP has some sort of defect, missing file or the service is not started during boot phase. Any ideas?

Please follow these instructions:

  • Apple File Service in Server Admin tools shows stopped but is running fine

    Hi
I am having a bizzare issue and not getting anywhere fast and hope anyone can help and would be appreciated.
What happened is one disk failed in our Xserve Raid (Raid 5)and we had to replace the drive in the server which rebuilt itself fine.
The issue is since we rebuilt the raid, the Xserve is showing the Apple File Service as stopped with 10.3.9 server admin.
The service is running fine as all the users including myself can connect using AFP, but I have no way to manage the AFP connections on the server.
I have tried rebooting and putting the server tools on a desktop. Though I still have the same issue.
Has anyone come across a similar problem with a service running and unable to manage in Server admin?
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi Bene
    On the server launch terminal
su root (supply the password when prompted)
    serveradmin status afp
The service should report that its ‘RUNNING’
    serveradmin stop afp
    serveradmins status afp
The service should report that its ‘STOPPED’
    serveradmin start afp
    serveradmin status afp
It should now be ‘RUNNING’ again
You could try running fsck and DiskWarrior on the RAID as the problem could lie with the Directory being damaged or corrupted. No need to reboot the server with the DiskWarrior disk (v3.03 or 4.0) just drag the application off the CD to the Server volume and run it from there. Make sure that all users are not connected to the RAID volume affected as DiskWarrior will unmount the whole drive.
    Hope this helps.

  • Super Apple Care Service on dead Superdrive

This is why Apple is the best.
I have a dead Superdrive, it ejects everything.
So I called AppleCare and they said to take it in to get a new Superdrive.
Called my local reseller/repair company in Green Bay ( no comments on Sundays game please)... and talked to the service tech, who said he'd call me back.
He did, within a week, and told me he has my new Superdrive.
I Haven't even brought in the iMac for them to look at!
They ordered and got the part, BEFORE it was looked at.
Apple loves us. Trusts user's word on problems, and knows what this kind of service means.
I might be able to get my iMac Superdrive replaced, while I wait!!!
I hope some, who have problems, take heed that Apple does offer the best service.
Talk to Apple, and your local service techs. They like your input.
This was, since 1987, my very first repair of any Mac I've owned. I have had 3 new ones, and two used ones.
I am not a special customer. Or a corporate customer.
I'm a regular user like everyone in here.
I may be an unhappy Packer fan, but I am a very happy Mac today.

<< Apple loves us. Trusts user's word on problems, and knows what this kind of service means. >>
I'm very happy for you that your service was so good, but let's be honest, I don't think it had anything to do with "trust." It can't be a surprise to Apple that an iMac Superdrive failed. Just take a look around this forum.
    Sorry about the Packers, btw.

  • Disable file service in single user mode?

After a failed (with an error) attempt to install the latest security update, the iMac won't get past 'waiting for apple file service' during boot. I presume the botched install left something bad, so I'd just like to get it booted so I can retry the install to see if that fixes it.
Safe startup doesn't work - it just reboots part way through.
So I'm trying to figure out how to disable the service altogether, from single-user mode.
Does anyone know what file(s) I need to modify, or what 'defaults' incantations I need to do, to disable it?
    iMac G3, 600MHz Mac OS X (10.3.9)

I managed to disable it - moved the AppleShare folder out of /System/Library/StartupItems - but it just hung on some other service.
The CD/DVD drive is toast in this thing, so I can't boot from the O/S disks either. Target disk mode doesn't work either, even though it is supposed to for this model.
    I'm looking into netboot now.

That one's consistent with disk/file damage. The first thing I'd try with that is running a disk check (chkdsk) over your C drive.
XP instructions in the following document: How to perform disk error checking in Windows XP
Vista instructions in the following document: Check your hard disk for errors
Windows 7 instructions in the following document: How to use CHKDSK (Check Disk)
Select both Automatically fix file system errors and Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors, or use chkdsk /r (depending on which way you decide to go about doing this). You'll almost certainly have to schedule the chkdsk to run on startup. The scan should take quite a while ... if it quits after a few minutes or seconds, something's interfering with the scan.
Does the chkdsk find/repair any damage? If so, can you get an install to go through properly afterwards?

  • Since trying to install the latest version of ITunes I have not been able to get it to launch at all! I get a message that says " C:Programme files\common files\Apple\Apple Push service.dll is either not designed to run on windows or contains an error. "

Please help! After I click ok on the error message above I get another message box that says "ITunes not installed Error 7 (Windows error 193)
I have uninstalled it and re-installed it, I have rsn the repair ITunes, I have re doqnloaded Quicktime- nothing will work
    Thanks

I also had this issue when one day itunes stopped working for me on windows 8...
the error message I received first was: C:Programme files\common files\Apple\Apple Push service.dll is either not designed to run on windows or contains an error.
followed by: ITunes not installed Error 7 (Windows error 193)
Your response addressed how to fix this issue with earlier windows operating systems, but not for windows 8, so what ended up working for me was your advice applied a little differently. For anyone running windows 8 needing to know how to resolve this issue by repairing the Apple Application Support program, try following these simple steps - what a relief it was to have itunes working again after applying b noir's answer to the windows 8 operating system!
    1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Control Panel.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the lower-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer up, click Settings, and then click Control Panel.)
    2. Click the Programs and Features icon.
    3. In the list of programs and features, find the Apple Application Support feature and click to select it.
    4.  In the gray title bar above it, click Repair.
    5. Approve the window prompts that follow until the repair has been completed.
    6. Relaunch iTunes.
Hope this helps & good luck!

  • Apple customer service ... or lack of

ok i had my macbook delivered, charged it up, used it ect... then left it until the next morning.
i plugged in the charger and the green light just flashed.
after hours on the phone to applecare they told me to take it into the nearest applestore for a replacement or wait for apple to send me a box to be collected...ect
went to my apple store in sheffield....90 minute drive each way.
they said there was a problem with the internal board which transfers power from the magsafe port to the boards.
they had a load in stock but refused, rudely, to give me one because, basically i had already paid and they wanted to keep them in stock incase someone wanted to buy one, so they could get more money.
so i was sent home with 750 GBP worth of cardboard box.
so i rung them back, after wasting 5 hours going to the store and getting back (people who have been to meadowhall will realise the pain in the a** that is parking.)
so i ring applecare and they say its going to take two weeks !!!!!!
i need a laptop to start uni with on monday, becuase i dont fancy taking in a powermac G5 and a 23 inch display in every day.
so now after having the laptop for 24 hours i am down 25 quid for fuel 5 hours of my saturday and 750 quid for the laptop.
is this disgusting customer service or am i being too expectant of a big company such as apple

if you bought online/mail order you need to call and tell them to take it back for a full refund and at their cost
if you bought from a physical shop, just take it back and demand immediate replacement or refund
they sold you a dead one, you don't have to accept it
you've given them a fair opportunity to do what they are obliged to do
now, cooly and calmly, go for the throat
for details see the trading standards website...
    http://www.tradingstandards.gov.uk/cgi-bin/calitem.cgi?file=ADV1016-1011.txt
if you need further advice, call your local tso
if you bought on credit card, also complain to the card company, they are jointly liable
fyi i would never buy anything expensive online from apple, too many bad experiences of poor apple service
imho apple products are great, but i find apple uk service far inferior to that of resellers (such as micro anvika and john lewis, yes this is a hint of where to go with your refunded money!)

  • HT4974 Changing file service location for Groups

Who has found the "separate interfaces" for File Service data mentioned in the referenced article?  I cannot figure out how to get Mountain Lion OS X Server to move away from the /Groups folder for Group Services.
    TIA,
    Tim

    Hi there
I have been looking at this also and am also very annoyed that Apple has chosen not to surface this functionality in the Server administration GUI for system administrators. It must be part of their drive to 'prettify' OS X Server — a terrrible mistake and the persons responsible should be sacked and some people with real (painful) sysadmin experience be put in responsibility. Strong words I know, but read on...
The minute someone decides to install OS X Server they go from being a 'user' to being, whether they like it or not, a 'sysadmin'. It is no trivial thing being a systems administrator, and sysadmins very quickly, with respect to touching systems, become familiar with this sentiment : "Be afraid, be very afraid..."
The functionality to change the location of the File Sharing  — Groups, Server Public (Shared Items) & Users — mount points exists in OS X Server. In fact it can (should be able to I believe — I have not tried it... yet) be changed with one command... if necessary preparations have been done.
To view all the server settings for file sharing issue this command in Terminal:
    sudo serveradmin settings sharing
we will then see the following for Groups (there is more listed for users etc. folders I haven't shown), I have blanked out some site specific information.
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:dsAttrTypeStandard\:GeneratedUID = "xxx"
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:smbName = "Groups"
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:afpIsGuestAccessEnabled = no
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:smbDirectoryMask = "0755"
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:ftpIsShared = no
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:afpName = "Groups"
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:smbCreateMask = "0644"
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:ftpIsGuestAccessEnabled = no
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:nfsExportRecord = _empty_array
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:path = "/Groups"
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:smbIsGuestAccessEnabled = no
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:name = "Groups"
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:smbInheritPermissions = no
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:ftpName = "Groups"
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:smbIsShared = yes
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:afpIsShared = yes
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:isIndexingEnabled = yes
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:dsAttrTypeNative\:sharepoint_group_id = "xxx"
    sharing:sharePointList:_array_id:/Groups:mountedOnPath = "/"
This is based on, in my installation, of having the Groups folder in the original default location of "/Groups". One of the lines shows clearly what needs to be changed to move (change mount point) '/Groups' to a new location...
The concern I have with the way you moved the Groups folder is it may not work cleanly long term because just symbolically linking the folder may not be sufficient.
Also using rsync with '-avvE' options copies the extended attributes (ACLs) but setting/copying the (traditional) Unix owner and group ownership & permissions (which are also used by OS X) are not done. If the command is executed as root then all the copied files & directories will change owner & group to root's. The following rsync switches should be used
    --owner
    --group
    --perms
preferably though the Unix 'cp' command should be used with the '-a' switch, something like this:
    cp -a /Groups /Volumes/VolumeName/SomeNewFolder
N.B. no trailing '/' is used.
Of course this is untested by myself as yet, and you should check and confirm yourself. I have a Parallels OS X virtual machine I will install OS X Server on to try this, I will not do on my production server.
You will note that I have not listed the the serveradmin settings command to change where OS X Server should look for the '/Groups' folder can you see what it should be? I can post what I believe it should be if you wish, let me know.
Of course all of the above relies on the fact that OS X Server will not get 'upset' with us changing a setting outside of a, non-existant in the first place, GUI surfaced settting function. Which again is why I would like to test this on a virtualised server. Of course you can give it a try, I would be obviously interested to hear how it goes — I would do a full backup first though. After making the serveradmin settings change I would reboot the server.

  • Transferring Files from a dead PC to a Mac Pro.

Howdy all, My PC that I've been using as sort of a media hub in my living room has finally died. Motherboard said "NO MORE!!!" As a replacement I purchased an older Mac Pro 1,1. It is perfectly suited for my needs. The PC has 4 hard drives in total. One is used primarily for Windows 7 to reside on and the other 3 contain music, pictures, videos, things of that nature. I want to put those hard drives into the Mac Pro, however it has been my experience that hard drives formatted to NTFS won't be seen by the Mac. So how do I go about getting the files off the dead PC drives, reformatting the drives for Mac and then placing the files back onto those drives. Is there a way that bootcamp can be implemented to ease the process. The Mac Pro is a 1,1, it has 4gb of RAM, and it is running OS X 10.7.5. I don't want to lose 11 years worth of family photos and some 50 gigs worth of music, so any help would sure be appreciated.

Paragon Software has best of the NTFS drivers for Mac OS so you can easily access, write and use the drives as is. They even have a non destructive means with another of their programs to convert to/from HFS and NTFS (pretty sure).
Apple's read only NTFS is weak such that external drives with NTFS often don't mount even, the other being low overhead and performance you want. And Paragon is strong on Macs and low cost.

  • We need a new section entitled:  Issues With Apple Customer Service

"This Feedback about the Discussions forum is intended for questions about how to use Apple Discussions and for general constructive feedback about how the Discussions system is operating or how it may be improved. Please use this forum appropriately. Failure to do so may result in your posting privileges to this forum being disabled.

Alright, I have a suggestion for improvement. We need a new forum section for complaints about the way Apple is treating us.
To make sure I'm being clear, let me give you an example of just such a post that may be included in such a section.
I ordered online the family packs of Leopard, iWork '08 and iLife '08 on November 6th. I received an email telling me my order had been shipped on November 7th.
On November 9th I decided to check the progress of my shippment by logging on to FedEx. To my surprise, it had been delivered! Not to me but another party. I could download a PDF from FedEx and see the signature.
After trying to deal with FedEx for a few days I was finally told to deal with Apple because they would have to initiate the investigation. Fine. These things happen.
On 11/13/2007 I spoke with an Apple Customer Service Representative and received an Apple Issue Number and Case Number. I was told that it should be resolved in a few days. It wasn't.
11/20/2007, Here's where it gets interesting. In talking with them again I explained that since my signature was not on the FedEx ticket it had not been delivered properly if at all. I explained that since FedEx was clearly at fault the package should be shipped again. Finally they agreed. I was told that my package would be shipped and to expect an email.
11/23/2007, I was told again that nothing would be shipped until after an investigation had been completed. So did they lie? I spoke with a manager who kept repeating that he was sorry for the mis-communication. That became very frustrating to say the least. Remember, FedEx requires a signature. Without it or my permission to deliver somewhere else they must deliver to me and get my signature. The FedEx PDF clearly shows another persons signature.
Equally frustrating is the fact that they will not keep me informed as to the status. I have to call them and wait on hold. I did get a couple of emails with text along the lines of, "We continue to work with our carrier on your lost package. "
However, there is no way to reply to these form letters. The only way to stay in touch with Apple is to call and be put on hold.
Twice, after giving them my order number and being put on hold "while they look up my records" or whatever, the call was disconnected. I'm not saying they did so on purpose but the results were the same. Another call, another round of giving my order number and explaining to yet again a new person the details of the situation.
I've had many problems with Apple since becoming a customer in June of 2006 but I just can't let this go. I need a place to warn others. If you buy something, you might be better off buying it from a store instead of on-line. This kind of information is needed to warn others concerning the business practices of Apple should something go wrong. This is why we need a new section for putting forth such complaints.

It seems to me that the real problem here is with FedEx, as I have encountered similar types of problems with them in the past. Even though a signature is required, I have had packages left on my porch. When I enquired, someone had actually signed (i.e.forged) my name! Other times it has been left on my porch with some other signature. When I call to complain, FedEx just seems to think there is no problem as long as I got my package. They seem totally unconcerned even though a signature is required and I definitely did not authorize delivery with no signature. I have expressed my concerns directly to Apple, but have no way of knowing if it has done any good. I think this problem is worse with FedEx ground, as that is contracted out. Around here anyway, i think the drivers will sign the ticket and leave the package just so they won't have to make another trip. It's not right, and it's not supposed to happen this way, but i know it does.
Apple entrusted your package to FedEx in good faith that it would be delivered to you, and that your signature would be required for you to receive it. That should have resulted in you receiving it. however, due to a false signature, you did not. Clearly, FedEx is responsible.
If the package was supposedly delivered to your address, but has a false signature, I wonder if the driver might have signed the delivery ticket or gotten someone else to sign it and just left it on your porch or something like that. If so, it could have been subsequently stolen. If something like this happened, it might explain why things are so bogged down in the investigation at Apple. From their viewpoint, the package was delivered and a signature was obtained and they are probably being stonewalled by FedEx.
A user to user discussion forum such as Apple Discussions won't help with delivery problems. It's best to report them directly to Apple as you have done. If you continue to have problems, you can call Apple and ask to speak to Apple Customer Relations. They may well be able to cut through the red tape. You could also express your concern in the "Feedback to Apple" section. Maybe if enough people complain, they might consider awarding the shipping contract to someone else. Or perhaps the other shippers are even worse.
One of my recent shipments was evidently lost in a typhoon. But when I called Apple, a replacement was sent out immediately. This is more what I would expect of Apple, and you have every right to expect similar treatment.
If FedEx delivered to the wrong address and got a wrong signature, they should be expected to go back and retrieve the package. But if they delivered to your address and did not get your signature, then you would be well within your rights to go to your local Better Business Bureau and file a complaint against FedEx. That might possibly get some action of some sort. FedEx cannot ignore the BBB as easily as they can ignore you. If your signature was actually forged, you will certainly be able to prove that the signature on the delivery ticket is definitely not yours. And you could forward the BBB complaint to Apple. I don't know if this would help or just muddy the water, but it would put a little more pressure on FedEx I would think.
In the meantime, I would certainly speak to Apple Customer Relations and see if they can help you out here. They want happy Apple customers, and I think they would like to know about the extreme frustrations you are experiencing through no fault of your own.
I sympathize with your problems, and I hope that you are able to get them resolved soon.
    Good luck!

  • MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011, 16GB RAM and Apple Premium Service Center

    Hello all,
My dad has a MacBook Pro 13" Late 2011, it came with a 4GB RAM. When he got Parallels and installed Windows 8, 4GB RAM were not enough to even deal with Safari so he had to buy 16GB RAM from Cruical. Today when he went to Apple Premium Service Center here in Qatar (51 East) they refused to install the x2 8GB RAM and only installed one of them. They kept warning my dad that installing the whole 16GB can cause issues with the MacBook Pro HDD and can make it go faulty. I wanted to ask if installing RAMs can pose the HDD life to any danger. Because my dad uses his Mac for work and wouldn't like to lose any of his files against small additional speed.
    Thanks.

its very easy to do, here are step by step instructions with photos

  • Access to Safari is blocked because Apple file is allegedly damaged

An alert from <techsupportnumber.us> appears repeatedly when I try to use Safari on my MacBook Pro (OSX Lion). It says that my Apple file has been damaged and that I should contact Apple customer care. The phone number is different from the Apple support number on the Apple website so I am suspicious. How can I regain access to Safari?
    Isakichi

Quit Safari, choosing Force Quit from the Apple menu if needed, and then launch it with the Shift key held down. If that doesn't work, disconnect the computer from the Internet and try again.

  • Will I lose files when I perform Lion Recovery?

Will I lose any files when I perform Lion Recovery? I have been having some problems with my 2011 MacBook Pro 13-inch lately and am considering using Lion Recovery to solve them.. Will I lose any of my files when installing a fresh copy of Lion with Lion Recovery??
    HELP ME PLEASEEEE!!!!
    Thanks

You need to get some way of backing up your files if you care about them. Otherwise you're at risk of data loss, particularly since youre having problems now which could escalate at any time. Running any computer, regardless of operating system, without making backup of important files is taking a rather foolish risk. There are all sorts of ways to make backups; there are even free online storage services such as Dropbox which offer a couple of gigabytes of free space in their servers to which you can back up, if you have no other method.
    Regards.

  • Allow others to order iPhoto calendar via Apple Photos Services (or other)

I thought I saw this option somewhere, but I have an iPhoto calendar that I've printed through Apple Photo Services for myself. I now want to make that cal available for others to print without having to be involved in placing the order for them. Is that possible? Ideally, they would not even need a .mac account, but could order as a guest. If Apple does not offer this service, does anyone know of a short-run printer that will take the PDF and make a cal of it? Fed Ex/Kinko's does not have a lot of info on their site for that kind of thing. I will call them shortly.
    Thanks.

Thanks Terence. I assume the file is stored on the Apple server for 4 weeks (in which time it is removed), so I'm unclear why they can't assign it a unique number and allow me to send that number to my mom who can use it to order the cal. That does not seem impossible to me and could help Apple make more money on prints.
