Apple Finder New Window Height bug

Hello,
Every time I mount a mount a file system with a Finder > Connect to Server or a Command+K, the Finder opens the new window at the full height of my laptop screen. It is very annoying. I always resize the height back down, but Finder never remembers that I have done this.
Is there any solution to this problem I have a MacBook Pro 13 with Retina Display and OS X 10.8.4. This problem has been here since 10.8.0.
See the attached screen shot.
Thanks,

Open the Terminal utility and run the following command (copy and paste it):
sudo find / -name ".DS_Store" -depth -exec rm {} \;
When you press Enter, you will be prompted for your password (this will not show), and then wait for the command to drop back to a dollar-sign command prompt (it may take a few minutes to complete).
This will remove all of the hidden window settings files from your system, and should allow any resized window settings to be saved properly.

  • Finder not opening new window automatically in Mountain lion 10.8

I recently upgraded to mountain lion 10.8 from Snow Leopard 10.7. Before when I rebooted the computer the Finder would always open a new window.  Now it does not and I have to open a new window every time. Is that the way it's supposed to be or is that a bug?

  • How can I put OSX 10.7 on a new Macbook Air. Maverick no longer allows "open file in a new window" and I really miss it. At the Apple Store they told me it can't be added to the new OSX 10.10 so I  want to change the OSX on the new Macbook Air and it

I have been using a 2012 Mac pro to do HD video editing. I bought a new portable Macbook Air only to find that Maverick no longer has "open files in a new window" which I use all the time in the very large folders of video clips and royalty-free music. I asked at the Apple Store how I could get this back on the Macbook Air and they said it couldn't be done so I thought I would re-format the HD and install 10.7 on it and was notified by the Macbook Air I can't put 10.7 on that computer. Apple use to give this as an option but now they have gone more to the attitude of "Do it our way or go to ****!" In anger I went out and bought a Dell Laptop and Pinnacle Studio 17 which I have been learning to use. I have been an Apple/Mac user since 1979 and would still rather do my video editing on a Mac. Is there any way that I can force the Macbook Air to let me load in OSX 10.7 where there is still the option to  "open files in a new window" or is there a way to add this to Maverick? The experts at the Madison, WI Couldn't give me any help on this.

Choose Preferences from the Finder menu, click on the General tab, and uncheck the box to open folders in a new tab.

  • Finder always opens new window

    Hello everybody,
maybe this is just a simple one but since the last Update to 10.5.5 I have the problem that my finder aways opens a new window when I hit a folder. I have already checked the preferences and the option "always open folders in new window" is definetly turned off.
Same happens if I use the key kombination APPLE+DOWN ARROW. Since now this has opened the folder in the same window but this has changed, too.
    Can somebody help me?
    Thanks and bye.

This works fine for me on 10.5.5.
To narrow things down, create a new user and log in as that user. See if the problem happens for that user too. If it doesn't then it is something specific to your account, not the OS. If it doesn't happen for the other user, log in as the user that is misbehaving and navigate to ~/Library/Preferences/ and drag com.apple.finder.plist to the trash. Then Control-Option-Click on the Finder icon in the Dock and select Relaunch. When the Finder comes back up, does the problem still occur?

  • Finder always opens new windows

Finder always opens new windows for me. It didn't used to do this (its been doing it at least since I was using 10.5.6), and "Preferences > Always open folders in a new window" is not checked. Any ideas?

    JRokeach,
Sorry if this sounds to simple, I'm hoping that it is, but in a finder window do you have the toolbar showing? Because if you don't it will open all the folders in there own windows. To fix there is a little button in the top right that hides the toolbar, also if you goto view hide toolbar it will do the same.
If that isn't the case try removing the com.apple.finder.plist found in Macintosh HD -> Users -> YOUR USER -> Library -> Preferences, and trashing it.
    Hope that helps,
    Weston

  • HT2470 Clicking finder in the dock does not open a new window.

I seem to be experiencing some odd behaviour.
When I click the finder in the dock - no new finder window opens. The icon has an active glow but I cannot get it to launch.
Any thoughts or am I just being daft?

Ok I finally solved my problem too, this is the way I had done
Delete the following folders and files
    DropboxHelperTools (Library Folder)
    Dropbox (Application)
    Dropbox (user)
    2. Delete deleted com.apple.finder.plist
    3. Delete .dropbox folder (Go to folder and then type ~/.dropbox)
    4. Empty trash
    5. Download and install DropBox from web again
    6. During the installation, a window will pop up and mention it can't find the link, and what we need is to relink.
    Bingo

  • Finder opens a new window with tabs in the last closed window loaded automatically

As the title says, I've found this happens more than a few times for some change. Maybe every time, I didn't count. Say, I closed a window with 3 tabs opened, then next time when I click finder to open a new window, I will find the 3 tabs loaded in the new window automatically. I am wondering if it is a new feature or bug. If it is not right, would anyone give me some suggestion to correct, if possible? Thanks.

Yup. I think bring convenience or not is supposed to be the fundamental difference bugs and features.
Convenience also comes with users' habit. I am sure I will get used to the new way as time goes by.

  • Finder search opening in new window and sidebar gone

Hi, just wondering if anyone could shed some light on this cause I'm quite lost.
First of when hitting Command-F in the Finder it opens up in a new window, I'm pretty sure it didn't do this before. Opening folders does not open in new windows. Using the "Go" menu also has the same behaviour. However it's not really a big issue.
Secondly and this is what's irritating me the most, the sidebar disappears when doing this. Toggling the sidebar and closing the window and starting a new search makes no difference, still no sidebar.
I have done some pretty major changes to my system recently, and even if I don't really see why it would have effects like this (havn't noticed any other changes). What I have done is that I have moved /Users/* to a separate volume and is mounting the volume as /Users using fstab.
I tried experimenting a little with com.apple.finder.plist and removing the file (i.e. letting finder recreate), this caused the sidebar to appear, however adding:
    <key>CreateDesktop<key>
    <false />
Made it disappear again, freaky if you ask me... I have had the desktop off for ages without any problems so don't see why it wont work any longer. Or if it only has to do with this key and not also others.
Property list is here (for one month) if it helps: http://pastebin.com/TYGsWj9T

Okay, this is wierd (and embarrasing), everything suddenly started working again after days of not working... Did nothing I can think of, only thing that I have done actively is that I have defaulted property list and restarted Finder multiple times. I even reverted back to the old property list and it still worked, maybe some cache problem? (which I didn't think of till now) but otherwise I don't know, thanks for reading my question at least .

  • Mavericks Finder - how default to "double click opens new window"?

I am old and set in my ways.  I like having the Finder open a new window when I double click a folder.  Since 1984 I've arranged Finder windows in positions and sizes that suit me and I have never seen any reason to change.
In Mavericks however there does not seem to be a way to default to, "double click opens new Finder window".  My choices under Finder preferences are, open in the same window; or open in a tab.  I don't care for either.
Does anyone know of a way to restore the traditional Finder behavior in Mavericks?  Thanks in advance.

There is a great deal of logic behind this change actually
And youll find me the LAST PERSON to complain about Mavericks really,......
not ONLY is it FREE,.......its made my new Air just blazing fast
My boot time now is 8 SECONDS (my goodness)
Switching APPS is ultra-fast.........even on my Air, Photoshop opens up LIGHTNING FAST,.....just mind numbingly FAST!
Thank You to Apple, MAVERICKS IS AWESOME!!!! I REALLY LOVE IT!!!

  • Launch Finder Without Opening a New Window

    Hello,
I'm making an application that resizes the icons on the desktop, and I would like to know if it's possible to launch the the Finder without it automatically opening a new Finder window.
My, Applescripts look something like this right now..
    on «event coVScliI» theObject
(do shell script "defaults write com.apple.finder DesktopViewOptions -dict IconSize -integer 70")
    (do shell script "killall Finder")
    tell application "Finder"
    activate
    end tell
    end «event coVScliI»
The reason for my killing the Finder in the first place is because it needs to be restarted for the changes to take affect.

    Hi,
If you don't mind using [GUI Scripting|http://www.macosxautomation.com/applescript/uiscripting/index.html], then the following script should relaunch the Finder without opening any new window (at least it does on Mac OS X 10.6.2) :
    tell application "Finder" to activate
    tell application "System Events"
    key code 53 using {option down, command down} -- ⌥⌘⎋
click (row 1 of table 1 of scroll area 1 of window 1 of process "loginwindow" whose value of text field 1 is "Finder")
    keystroke return
    keystroke return
    keystroke "w" using command down -- ⌘W
    end tell
(If the script doesn't work properly on your computer, first try adding a “delay” statement before the problematic line of code, for example “delay 0.2”.)

  • How do I disable finder from opening a new window upon mount?

When an external drive is mounted (such as an iPod in disk mode) Finder opens a new window showing the root of the new drive.
I realise why this happens, but is there any way of disabling this feature?.
    Cheers,
    Ebsy

It seems that there is a special flag that can be set or cleared on the volume to control that behavior. There is an Apple developer article about it, with source code, that might help.
    http://developer.apple.com/qa/qa2005/qa1449.html
I have to believe that someone has packaged up that code into a utility that can be found.

  • Numerous bugs experienced: toolbar, tabs, new window

Here are some of the bugs I experienced in just a few hours with this clearly not ready for release version:
    * Reload, stop loading and home buttons disappeared from toolbar
    * Firefox no longer remembers the tabs I had open a previous session, nor does it issue the famous "Well, this is embarrassing..." message. They're just gone.
    * I opened some new windows by holding down shift and clicking on a link. The window did not contain the contents of the linked site. And when I started Firefox again, each time it created one new window for each time I'd opened a new window. Right now, everytime I start Firefox 4, I get and must dismiss six blank windows.
    * There is an extra title bar containing the orange Firefox menu, and extra minimize, maximize and exit buttons. The first two work normally; the exit button works only if more than one tab is open. It then dismisses the application.

    Thanks for your reply
    # Yes, I do want these buttons visible '''all the time'''. I don't actually need Firefox to do my thinking for me as regards what controls I want to see. :) Before posting I tried to find a solution, and found an article similar to the one you linked. The buttons weren't on the 'customize' panel that I could find. Nor did clicking 'restore default set' help. They are gone.
    # I'd prefer it automatically restore my previous session, as 3.+ did. Is this no longer possible? That would be a shame, and a downgrade.
    # Shift + click a link to open the link in a new window in inherent to Firefox prior to version 4.0. I've seen folks complaining about other features, like the status/progress bar, that one must now install add-ons to provide. Perhaps they took this useful feature out of 4.0. That would also be a shame, and a downgrade.
    # I can't imagine what extension could be causing an extra title bar to appear, but I'm sure you're aware that Firefox won't actually run an extension that hasn't been tagged as compatible. There is, of course, no guarantee the developer didn't lie.
"Firefox 4.0 had like 10 times the number of Beta testers that any previous version of Firefox ever did."
Isn't it a pity the developers do not appear to have listened to them. They made changes for the sake of making changes - changes that aren't actually improvements, and they degraded the user experience for those long-time users.
I'll probably try it again around the end of the summer or so, when they've had a chance to shake some of these bugs out of it. Right now, it's just not useful or reliable enough for me.
But I do thank you for making the attempt to solve my problems. Take care.

  • Finder issue - won't launch new window, new plist resets immediately

Hey folks, just a series of strange little problems.
a.) When I launch Finder, it's a blank window. I have to press one of the buttons for a view to get it to show anything at all.
b.) I can't launch another Finder window. This is a problem if I need to, say, drag and drop files from one folder to another. Neither the keyboard shortcut or the New Window option under the File dropdown does anything at all.
c.) When I trash the .plist in Prefs, the problem gets fixed - but only for one new window launch. Then Finder immediately goes back to the no new windows default.
d.) I've had problems with Time Machine launch that were fixed by trashing the Finder plist.
This is happening on my MBP, running 10.6.2. Any ideas appreciated.

    Hey, I.m confused... 10.4 or 10.6?
Could be many things, but it's best to start with these two steps, which may fix it also...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc , then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, *you must select your language first.)*
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
Then Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it finishes.
Safe Boot... holding Shift key down at bootup. Safe Boot is a special way to start Mac OS X 10.2 or later when troubleshooting.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107392
If you can't find your Install Disc, at least try from Safe Boot onward.
Have you booted off your Original Install Disk by holding the *d key* down at boot-up, (not the c key), and run the extended Apple HW Test? Some Install disks require holding the Option key at bootup to select the AHT. Some Macs came with separate AHT CDs.

  • New Window In Finder Not Holding Prefs

I used to be able to double click on my internal hard drive's icon and a new finder window would appear as I had last adjusted it . . . column view with each column fairly narrow (to show more columns). I've just noticed recently that I'm unable to do that. When I double click on the icon, I'm presented with a new finder window in icon view in the center of the screen. What's odd is if I get a new window with command-N, I'm presented with a window in column view (which is what I set the finder prefs for). I tried tossing my finder prefs, but that didn't help.

There are APPs that do it on Versiontraker.com & macupdate.com, or start the Terminal App and try this...
    Show hidden files...
Open the terminal and type or copy/paste:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool true
Reverting to the default of NOT showing hidden files:
defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles -bool false
Trash them all & reboot, won't hurt anything.
