Apple ID Disaster

Excited to get the iPhone 4S, and update my iPad and iPhones to iOS5, iCloud, I didn't foresee this problem.
Basically, I am unable to merge two of my Apple ID's into one to use in iCloud.
When I moved my MobileMe to iCloud, moving my contacts, calendars, email, I used my @mac.com Apple ID that I created since I got the Mac.com service. It worked great, but when I setup my iPhone and iPad with the iCloud, I was unable to see my previous purchases. Basically $$$$ of movie, song, App purchases I made in iTunes with the Apple ID I created when I first used iTunes with @gmail.com
I called the Apple care to get it fixed on my brand new iPhone 4S, but basically there is no way to fix this.
You can create your iCloud with @gmail.com with all your purchases, but you can forget about using iCloud with notes, calendar, contacts from mobileme.com. With my existing iCloud that I merged my mobile.com, now I can't add the purchases.
I hope Apple fixes this disasterous problem soon since I see many people have the same problem.

The documentation for this release was pretty bad and you are not alone in getting lost in it.  Apple failed to make it very clear that every Apple account (i.e. @mac.com, @me.com, etc.) is also an Apple ID and that Apple IDs can't be merged, deleted, or changed.  The only Apple ID that has any flexibility is what I am calling the Anonymous Apple ID (for lack of an official name by Apple) which is tied to a 3rd party email account.  It is the only Apple ID that can have its login ID changed, but only to another 3rd party email address.
All non-Apple computer users that have Apple toys, are using an Anonymous Apple ID.  It is the Apple ID that all of your purchases are tied to, and as you are probably aware, purchases cannot be transferred to another account.  During the initial setup of your first iOS 5 device for a specific Anonymous Apple ID, you can create a new iCloud account with a NEW (never used before, not even as an alias) @me.com address that will tied to that Anonymous Apple ID, but it cannot be any @me.com that currently exists (active or not).
The problem is that Apple really messed up with the way that they presented this to the user, confusing them so much that they made the wrong selections, which as you stated are permanent.  However, there is a work around.  You can add additional iCloud accounts to all of your devices.  Turn on all of the sync features for the account that you want everything to sync with, and only the Mail syncing for all the others.  In most cases, you will want to do this with your Anonymous Apple ID if you are a non-Apple computer user, and your @mac.com or MobileMe account that was converted to an iCloud @me.com account if you are an Apple computer user.
I can see that Apple was trying to do everything at once to make it simple for users to upgrade; however, there is nothing simple about this upgrade.  It would have been much simpler, and easier for users to understand what they were being asked, if they had been required to visit a web site (from their computer) to set all of this up, instead of forcing users to do all of this from a tiny mobile device.  There are rumors that Apple may be working on ways to merge/delete/change Apple IDs, but we'll have to wait and see.

    I don't care what Apple's company line is about malware. I've been hacked and something creepy installed. On Friday, August 13 2010, according to the logs. It calls itself " fcukuW " and my machine is a bit haywire. This thing is down in the Main System Files, I can't open any Preferences files in Library, and if I try iTunes opens and a random song will play.
    When I'm watching the logs and pull the ethernet cable it screams about being "cut off from the red stream".
    And the computer is slow as a garden slug, I suspect all my traffic is being routed and logged through somewhere. I have lawsuits brewing, but it may just be China botting Apples at last.
    And more. BUT- How do I get rid of it? If I reload the operating system it's then sitting in a file, and who wants to bet it gets loose? Ever try to throw away an old OS? It takes your iTunes, iPhoto, and other apps with it! (I've done this).
    What do I do? If I get a new machine it could ride my files in. I don't know of any bug killers- Apple says we don't need them and they're mostly right.

    There were files all over, they disappeared after I told my mom I have an appointment at the FBI Cyber Crimes lab. And I caught the brother coming out of my room. There are invisible files in Library under Preferences; they flicker periodically. And Preferences files are all booby trapped to not open; double click on one and iTunes opens. Rather clever.
    Yeah, I DO have it on password needed every ten seconds for everything. But I'm sure they show up in any monitoring being done on my traffic. Fishing for who my lawyer is would be a big part of it. So it's become useless.
    Maybe I need to just call back that guy at FBICCLab and cry until he takes it in. They ought to bust idiots like this before he just gets worse. And what's at stake property and chattels wise is considerable. And even if he installed it, there appears to be a signature of who wrote it. Big Federal crimes all around.
    I used to know how to invisible a file, but forgot since I don't break, enter and steal or harrass.And I'm having trouble with ClamXav. There may be armament against that in Psycho Bug. It flickers and I see it... or them. But I can't open them.
    I copied the logs that record what it does. I don't have a clue what all those numbers mean. And things have been entered at the command line, I would think some one an iota more computer literate than me could pull that up. I don't know how. But a copy of the Terminal icon was left out where I couldn't miss it re-titled something I can't post on a family sight. Any place the machine says "owned by" it's no longer me. It's fcukuW. And more....

  • Firewire not recognized, the "cure" done at Apple Store, DISASTER, HELP!

    Took my dual 2.5 to the Apple Store to "cure" the non-recognition of the firewire. They clear the Pram and other easy steps, restart the computer (I am packing my stuff as they seemed to think I was "cured") then, blinking displays and complete failure. They are doing an evaluation but they are saying things like: motherboard, power supply, etc., HOW CAN THIS HAPPEN! If they were doing this at the Store, was it their fault? I am waiting on the triage. Any one with such a situation which started as a firwire failure?

    I had fans of a Powerbook G4 turn into a logicboard issue. The computer is a fairly tightly integrated unit. The firewire ports are saudered onto the logicboard. So it is entirely possible that in an effort to fix the firewire ports they noticed something wrong with the circuitry to the ports on the logicboard.
    Power supply affects Firewire ports in that Firewire ports are able to supply power to Firewire devices that don't have their own power and understand signals for bus power. If the power manager is having issues, that could affect the ability of Firewire ports to supply power.
    A flakey power supply may create such issues that seem intermittent and grow with frequency as problems.
    So don't worry, so far nothing unexpected has happened at the store.
    Some things to think about, if they do end up determining the power supply is the issue, check to make sure that you have a good surge protector, and are not defeating the purpose of the ground plug, and use steady power on the machine. If away from the machine for longer than a day, or you have thunderstorms in the forecast, I'd shut down and unplug the machine. A surge from a direct lightning strike can't be protected against by any surge protector, and can create power supply issues. Also ask an electrician to find out whether or not your power port that you are plugging the computer into is able to supply the power required of the machine.

    When this crap does finally get sorted out, Apple answers up for their massive screw up and we can get our original iphones working again, the first thing I'm going to do is get all of my important data off it. Then canx the 2 year contract with ATT and go back to using my Microsoft based Smart Phone.

  • Managing multiple sub clips

    I have just migrated from Final Cut Studio to Final Cut Pro X.  I am trying to get my head around the workflow of managing clips and sub-clips.  I am working on an interview, so I have a master shot which was recorded to tape and lasts an hour or so and is a single clip.  I am having problems with the following:
    a)  I have an audio recording from a portable digital recorder which I need to synchronise to the master clip (it has a poor quality audio track from the camera's microphone).  I have connected the digital audio track and removed the camera audio and it is more or less in synch but I can't see how to easily move the audio track in small increments to improve the synch with the interview video.  (The automatic synch option failed - the digital audio was first followed by the camera video/audio, so the whole clip was over two hours.)
    Any suggestions on how to do this with accuracy?
    b)  I started making subclips from the master track using keywords but I really want to give a sensible name to each of the subclips and then group them.  I see that I can add additional ranges with Command Shift "i" - but if I forget and press just "i", I lose all the marked up ranges!  I still have the subclips so I can add them one by one, but this seems very clumsy.  Using keywords works okay - but I can't order them unless I name them alphabetically - again, its very clumsy.  It seems to me that the developers assumed the clips would be short and probably only one in and out per clip.  They must never work with a master shot from tape...
    Any suggestions on a better way to do this?

    Hi Karsten - thanks for the suggestions - I still haven't figured out how to move the audio clip by frame (rather than by dragging with the mouse) but it is more or less in-synch now.
    I don't like the keywords option - I want proper name for each subclip and bins to put them in.  Keywords on top of that would be great - but not instead of.  That's how my mind works - a heirarchical structure provides a lot more information than the vagueness of subclips in multiple buckets - how do you know if you have included every subclip in your movie?  How can you be sure you havent used the same clip twice?  Also, if you delete the last keyword, the subclip vaporises!  I have an hour long clip from the tape on the main camera for an interview.  If i make a mistake at ANY TIME by pressing just "i" instead of Command "i" all my subclips vaporise - they still appear in the keyword collection but you cannot favourite them, and therefore you cannot name them individually. They are like phantoms!
    I found a solution today after 2 hours with Apple support on the line - You can knife up the long clip, create new compound clips and give them a new name.  Then you can use keywords to organise them - this is your only choice because you can't put clips in a folder.  Its not ideal - if you knife in the wrong place you can't roll back the edit like you could with a subclip in the old Final Cut Pro.
    I don't think the Final Cut Pro X development team use the product - there are so many problems related to assumptions they have made about the original material that it is very difficult to figure out how to use this software for a serious project.  If you have lots of short clips then perhaps it makes sense - but if the keyword has to substitute for the name of the clip it becomes very unwieldy...
    I recorded an interview - so every sub-clip has to tell me what the interviewee is saying.  And then I want to organise the clips in a hierarchical system (I'm a computer programmer by trade).  I want one copy of each clip in an order which makes sense to me.  No extras!  No multiple copies.  Keywords is MUCH too vague...
    Its not a professional's program any more.  Every edit is now destructive - nothing goes to trash in 10.1.1 it just vaporises, and unless you remember to take a copy of your library before you start editing, if you delete something important you have to start again from the beginning.  With a library of nearly 400Gb for this project, taking a copy is a big deal!  I wonder if its the iMovie team who developed this software?  If I hadn't thrown out my old software I would go back to the old version immediately.
    This is a fiasco on the scale of the Apple Maps disaster...  I hope they sort this out soon!

  • DANG! What's with iOS 7.1 and Wallpaper?

    >_<  OK, I love to put my own pictures on my iPad wallpaper. iOS 7 messed this up with being unable to scale and position anything except Apple's wallpapers. So I actually got an app (Wallax, used to work pretty good) to take care of the scaling so I could use my own pictures again.
    Now, with 7.1, the Wallax app is broken, and I don't think it's their fault. Apple seems to have changed the rules out from under them... again.
    C'mon, Apple, why can't you just let us put up our own dang pictures, scale 'em however we want, put black around the edges if you need to, and let us get on with customizing OUR DEVICES? People have been customizing phone and computer wallpaper for DECADES. We LIKE to be able to do this! What's your problem?
    Having gotten that off my chest, does anyone out there have a workaround for this latest Apple paternalistic disaster?

    Afaria will be providing a patch to address this issue that increases the size of the database column from 2K to 6K to accommodate this change.
    This issue is resolved in Service Pack 3 Hot Fix 39 and Service Pack 4 Hot Fix 3. Available now.

    I upgraded my iPhone4 today. Immediately my phone is defunct, and I cannot find any workaround listed anywhere online for the phone, only for the iPad2.
    Reset All Settings as per iPad2 advice had no effect except to make me have to re-enter all my settings again.
    The volume bar is greyed out in Music settings, and has no visible point on the bar where the volume is defaulted to.
    The greyed out bar doesn;t change when the volume buttons are pressed.
    However, sometimes the ringer volume logo pops up and changes when I do this, but not always.
    However when I call the phone, the ringer is always at full volume, as it was immeditely prior to upgrade.
    When I press either up or down volume button the ringer silences completely, immediately, and cannot be resurrected by any manouvers.
    Only another call will make the ringer sound.
    When I answer the call, the phone is mute though the mute button is not highlighted.
    Toggling the mute makes no difference.
    Selecting Speaker mode makes no difference - it is mute.
    Selecting either up or down volume buttons has no effect.
    Using the Jack output is silent.
    I cannot hear music, youtube videos, BBC news clips, or any alerts.
    Vibrate is still working.
    Trying not to get angry again with another Apple "UPGRADE" disaster - but frankly - I can't even make or receive a phone call - is this fixable???
    PLease does anyone know how to dothis?
    BTW, being iPhone 4, of course the Home button doesn;t work, so anything involving the Home button must be able to work with the Accessibility Home Button software.
    Desperately: How do I downgrade to previous iOS 6 last version?

    Why should Apple fix the problem? Maybe you should consider NOT upgrading if an expensive piece of (obsolete) software you're running won't work with it...

  • This new iOS 6.1 is a disaster my iPad is no longer able to make a correct connection to the wifi. I can only consider abandoning apple altogether!

    My iPad2 connects to the 3G but does not connect to the wifi. It sees my wifi router but it does not connect to it. The problem all started with iOS upgrade to 6.1. Wifi is THE most important component of an iPad getting it wrong is UNFORGIVABLE. If this does not get fixed very soon, Apple can kiss my loyalty bye bye.

    The problem has appeared with iOS 6.1 update. I have tried rebooting the iPad, forgetting the wifi network etc... I have numerous devices connected to the router through wired LAN and wifi. All of them were working properly.
    The iPad appeared to have problems connecting to the DHCP server and was showing an Unusual IP address starting with 169 rather than the normal range of 192.168.0.xxx served by my router. In the end rebooting the router appeared to have fixed the problem for now, however I will wait to see when the lease expires...
    One could establish that the problem is with the router, however the problem coincided with the upgrade to iOS6.1 and no other devices had any problem.

  • HT5621 Apple ID and rescue email address disaster. Please help!

    My mother recently set up her first iPhone. From what I can gather, during the setup process she was asked for a rescue email address. She only has one email address *************@btinternet.com. Later on when asked for an email for her Apple ID, she tried the same address but was told they cannot be the same. She then entered *************@btinternet.co.uk thinking this was just a login ID. The email address does not exist so some of you will know what's coming!
    We have just synced the phone to iTunes for the first time to get email contacts onto her phone. I wanted to setup iCloud backups etc for her but the phone will only send verification emails to the @btinternet.co.uk address which doesn't exist! We cannot therefore do anything much with the phone. I am praying there is a simple solution to this. I created an outlook.com address for her and set this up as an Apple ID on the computer thinking I was replacing the @btinternet.co.uk one. Whilst the outlook ID logs her into iTunes, the phone still tries to send emails to the other address.
    Any suggestions most welcome!!

    Oh, bummer. You are going to have to go in and do the following to get the iCloud account in sync with the Apple ID:
    1.     Sign back into Manage your Apple ID and change the Apple ID (temporarily) back to the .co.uk address
    2.     Don't verify this email, just click on Done when you have changed it
    3.     Have your Mum go into her phone to Settings>iCloud and have her scroll down to the bottom and click on Delete to delete the iCloud account under the invalid ID. She will want to type in the current password on her account. She can answer Yes to save her Contacts on the phone, if she wishes. Then complete the Delete process to get the iCloud account off of her phone.
    4.     Go back into Manage your Apple ID and change the ID back to the valid email address
    5.     Have her go back into her phone and under Settings>iCloud sign in with the valid new Apple ID
    Once she has done that, then they will all be in sync.
    I see what you mean about the Rescue email address. I looked on one of my old accounts, and could find no way to even get to it (not sure I have one on that account). But I would suggest that you contact iTunes Support and have them remove the Rescue email address if it is still there. It is possible that it was deleted when you changed the Apple ID to the same email, since they cannot both be the same.....

  • IMovie is still crashing?  This is an absolute disaster... I am really disappointed with Apple!!!

    I've seen the post about the library files to attempt to delete on old versions of iMovie, but I have the newest version.
    I seen the post about the corruption of iMovie files from certain titles... especially "organic main".  But I could not export my movie (1min 30 secs) before I added any titles...
    I think it might be the "dream" feature that I've added to the photos, but I don't have enough time inside iMovie before the crashes to change.
    I can't believe that Apple hasn't done more to fix this in the brand new version.  As a life-long apple user (since the commodore 64) I am very disappointed.
    Does Apple care that a signiture app is garbage?!?

    Go to maps.google.com, after the page comes up, in the bottom center of Safari, tap the box/arrow and you can add the shortcut to the homescreen. This is the best you can do if/when Google releases a stand-alone app for iOS.

  • Can't restore from apple Back up, after Leopard disaster

    Before I installed Leopard, I made a "new" back up on an external fire wire lacie drive.
    Here is where I went wrong, the 1st "Full Back Up' I did last spring was around 55GB, I had it set up for a weekly Back Up and the average "incremental" was around 4-6 GB, every few months,it would say the weekly back Up failed because of lack of space on the external drive. I would then delete the back up, open Apple back Up, and click on the window "home folder" "back Up" and it would make a new 55GB back up, and add around 4-6GB each week.
    These are the directions I thought I followed correctly
    "You can use Backup to remove files from the Backup folder on your iDisk. You might want to clear the contents of the folder so that you can create a completely new backup, or if you are backing up a new computer for the first time. (After you clear the contents of your Backup folder, you will no longer have a backup copy on your iDisk, so remember to perform another backup soon.)"
    Before I up graded to Leopard, I thought it would be better to have one 'big" back up , rather than the 55GB and several smaller 4-6GB, so I deleted, went to Back Up, clicked on "Home Folder" back up and made a new 55GB back up.
    I tried to do an "Archive " install and it froze up, (went perfect on our macBook) Apple care walked me thru and had me do a "clean and install", the whole time I was happy and glad I had a back up of my home folder.
    When I went to restore, it would scan 25,000 plus files, then "Restore Failed"
    When I looked at back up help,(under restore problems" I see where I went wrong
    To force a full backup:
    Select the plan (in the Backup window or the plan window).
    Choose Plan > Full Backup.
    I never new I had to "Force a Full back Up" so what I had been doing for 6 months was just doing incremental back ups, even if I had deleted the complete back up and all the incremental, and followed the window prompt to back Up. I am a little miffed, the only place I found where it talks about the need to "Force a Full Back Up' is in the help section, when you can't do a restore.
    Any way, is there any way to retrieve the 55GB of data, that I thought I had backed up??

    You might try any of the several data retrieval or disk repair utilities out there. Since your backup is from Tiger, they all should work but you should perform the operation from a Tiger OS, not Leopard.
