Applescript/Automator help entering text

Hi. I have a terminal script: defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{tile-data={}; tile-type="spacer-tile";}'
(Enter)
killall Dock
This is to create a blank space in the dock. I would like to create an Automator workflow or Applescript to run this without having to remember the script or look it up. But the problem is, Automator cant enter text and if i try to enter it with Applescript, the quotation marks mess it up. What should i do other than copy and paste the script to a text document?

Try using:
do shell script "defaults write com.apple.dock persistent-apps -array-add '{tile-data={}; tile-type=\"spacer-tile\";}'"
do shell script "killall Dock"

I have a spreadsheet of 2000+ users which includes their user ID, email address and a temporary password. I need an automated way to individually e-mail each user their user ID and temporary password, along with a paragraph of login instructions. It doesn't seem too overly complex but I don't know where to start. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

All due respect to Camelot, working with Excel is not so bad, you just need to work around its limitations.  the following should work, without the need of creating a tab-delimited file:
    tell application "Microsoft Excel"
-- use the correct range for your data, obviously
set theSpreadsheetPeople to value of range "A1:C2000" of worksheet 1 of document 1
    end tell
    repeat with thisPerson in theSpreadsheetPeople
set {userid, email, pass} to items 1 thru 3 of thisPerson
              tell application "Mail"
                        set newMess to make new outgoing message at end of outgoing messages with properties {subject:"This is the Subject line", sender:"[email protected]", visible:true}
                        tell newMess
      make new to recipient at end of to recipients with properties {address:email}
set content to "Text string with email contents, including user id: " & userid & " and password: " & pass
                        end tell
-- uncomment the following line to send automatically
      -- send newMess
              end tell
    end repeat
test it a few times on a short list of data lines (say 4 or 5 lines) with the send command commented out, so that you can make sure that the email is being structured properly and looks the way you want it to.  Once you're satisfied, you can uncomment the send line and use visible:false in the make new outgoing message line.  that will let Mail create and send the emails invisibly.  but again, make sure the emails are being created correctly before you uncomment that send line - nothing worse then sending out a bulk message with errors in it.

  • Need help entering text into my website

    Hello,
You'll have to forgive me as I am new to Dreamweaver, HTML
    and such things.
I have created my website interface, as shown here:
    http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/1452/mywebsitepm9.jpg
I created this in photoshop, then sliced the image into
slices and exported it into Dreamweaver.
I wish to add text to the large white box in the middle of
the page, what is the best way to do this?
    Thanks for any help

    > I created this in photoshop, then sliced the image into
    slices and

    > into Dreamweaver
A method that is highly unlikely to produce a worthwhile
    website. Photoshop
is an image editing program, not a website building program.
    If you are
trying to become a bona fide web designer I suggest you start
    by learning
HTML & CSS. This is a good starting point:

If you are just trying to create a one-time site for your
    personal use you
are probably better off buying a template and then just
    filling in the
blanks. Search this NG for sources of quality templates.
    Beware, many
template sites sell pure junk. Try here:

  • Applescript/Automator help needed.

I attempting to create an Automator Folder Action that will do two things.  First, when an image is added to the “Upload” folder, a new mail message will be created.  Second, it will run an applescript that allows me to select from a list of album names.  This value will go into the title field of the new email.  Here’s what the Automator Folder Action looks like so far:
    1.  Automator Action:  Get Selected Finder Items - this will get the item just added to the “Upload” folder.
    2.  Automator Action:  Set Value of Variable - Since I don’t see a way to save the image itself as a variable, I store the image name here and call it “Image Name.”
    3.  Automator Action:  Run AppleScript - When run, this will bring up a list of album names.  I click on the one I want and click OK.
    4.  Automator Action:  Set Value of Variable - set the value that holds the album name from step 3.
    5.  Automator Action:  Get Value of Variable - gets the value stored in step 2.
    6.  Automator Action:  New Mail Message - Fills out the To: field, populates the Subject: field with the Album name.  But here’s where it fails.  It populates the message field with the name of the path where the image is located, not with the image.
Note the first and last actions are disabled.
It seems this would work if I could pass the image itself as a variable, but I see no way to do that.  I apparently can only pass the name of the image.
Any ideas how I can fix this? Thanks!

There is an error in the AppleScript.  It should read...
    on run {input, parameters}
              set the_list to {"Album 1", "Album 2", "Album 3"}
    choose from list the_list
              set album_name to result
              return album_name
    end run
But the problem is still there.

  • How to enter text into text box in Pages '09

When I manually select a text boxes in Pages, I can paste text into them. I can move from text box to text box using System Events to keystroke tabs but have not figured out how to get Applescript Editor to make the pastes. I am trying to use Applescript Editor to enter text into a pages document that is formatted for labels.

I have downloaded template U-0089-02_P.doc from Avery, 14 boxes displayed in two columns of seven rows.
Once you have clicked in the upper left box, the following script should enter text into every box, from left to right and top to bottom.
    tell application "Pages"
    activate
    tell application "System Events"
    keystroke "Box 1"
keystroke tab & tab -- to go to the next column
    keystroke "Box 2"
keystroke tab -- to go to the next row
    keystroke "Box 3"
    keystroke tab & tab
    -- and so on
    end tell
    end tell
The problem is that I don't know how to enter the upper left box from the AppleScript Editor.

  • AppleScript for entering text in Open Finder Window

I am very, very new to using AppleScripts. I need to enter text into the search box. So far the script looks like this:
    on run {input, parameters}
        tell application "myApplication" to activate
        tell application "System Events"
            keystroke "o" using {command down}
        end tell
        return input
    end run
This launches the app and fires the command-o keyboard shortcut to open the finder menu to choose a file to open. Now I just need to enter text in:

I'm not sure what the above means.  are you trying to open a Folder containing image files in the Finder, or are you trying to open a set of image files in some application?  If the latter (which seems more likely), just add and Open Finder Items action at the end of the script and specify the application you want to use to open them.  Or if that's not what you mean, could you explain a bit more clearly?

  • My voice entered texts are being translated into Spanish...Help!

Starting this morning, my voice entered text messages in iMessage are being translated into Spanish and I don't know how to stop it.
    Anyone?

    Solved...
I selected a "stuck on Spanish" tag link after I posted and the answer was there.
I must have selected the Globe icon next to the microphone and when I touch it once, it changes my keyboard to Spanish, if I touch it again, it changes into Chinese Trad.
I held down the Globe icon and selected "English" and all is working again, but I don't like the proximity of the globe icon to the mic icon, as everytime I touch it by accident, my keyboard changes and my text gets translated into that language.....EEEEEK!
I've been playing with lanuages and have added these foreign keyboards, I need to remove these keyboards now.

  • HOW can I enter text using Japanese character sets?

The "Text, Plates, Insets" section of the LOOKOUT(6.01) Help files states:
"Click the » button to the right of the Text field to expand the field for multiple line entries. You can enter text using international character sets such as Chinese, Korean, and Japanese."
Can someone please explain HOW to do this? Note, I have NO problem inputting Hirigana, Katakana, and Kanji into MS WORD; the keyboard emulates the Japanese layout and characters (Romaji is default) and the IME works fine converting Romaji, and I can also select charcters directly from the IME Pad. I have tried several different fonts with success and am currently using MS UI Gothic.ttf as default. Again, everything is normal and working in a predictable manner within Word.
I cannot get these texts into Lookout. I can't cut/paste from HTML pages or from text editors, even though both display properly. Within Lookout with JP selected as language/keyboard, when trying to type directly into the text field, the IME CORRECTLY displays Hirigana until <enter> is pressed, at which point all text reverts to question marks (?? ???? ? ?????). If I use the IME Pad, it does pretty much the same. I managed to get the "Yen" symbol to display, though, if that's relevant. As I said, font selected (in text/plate font options) is MS UI Gothic with Japanese as the selected script. Oddly enough, at this point the "sample" window is showing me the exact Hirigana character I want displayed in Lookout, but it won't. I've also tried staying in English and copying unicode characters from the Windows Character Map. Same results (Yen sign works, Hirigana WON'T).
    Help me!

  • I am trying to use pages.  When I open a blank document and enter text, nothing appears on the document.  What is the problem?

I am trying to use pages.  When I open a document and begin entering text, nothing shows up on the document.  I cannot see what I am typing.  What is the problem and what am I doing wrong.

Thanks Jerrold.  But I am opening a word processing document.  The same thing happens when I select a blank layout page.  I try to put in shapes and nothing appears.  When I click around on the blank word processing document the verbage will appear in a green color but when I type, I still cannot see what I am typing. I have tried to uninstall and reinstall and this did not help.
    Thanks Again

In adobe reader app on iPad, I have a PDF document that added notes and comments to.  Once I left the document and returned to it, the notes and comments were gone.  Where are they?  I clicked "save" and "done" buttons after I entered text.

The application auto-saves your input when you close the document.  If you left the document, as you state, the notes/comments should have been saved and should have been visible the next time you opened the document with the Mobile Reader (note that if you are opening the document with another app such as Apple's built in PDF Viewer, things like notes/comments may not be visible).  Also note that if you are doing an Open In... from another app (like Dropbox), the version of the document in Dropbox does not update; only the version of the document in the Mobile Reader is updated.
Would it be possible to send a video of the problem you are encountering to [email protected] so that we can try to help?

  • Can't enter text in threaded frame

    How basic can this be?
After writing one book I'm preparing master pages for a second. When I created this document I selected the "master" option
I've copied master spreads in the lower frame of the Pages box. I liked several frames on the spreads together.
Now I've come back to those pages. I can select the frame but I can't enter text manually or pasting. The text cursor will not stay in the frame.
My goodness. How elementary can this be, what the heck am I missing?
    Thank you for your help.
    Scott

What I did was go back to the master pages and delete the existing text frames and rebuilding. That took
    care of it.
Thanks for your prompt help. I appreciate it.

  • Unable to enter text in popup window

    Hi,
I am new to OATS OpenScript. I am unable to enter text in the popup window.
    Here's my situation in detail:
My application is in Oracle Siebel and the pop up is a webpage dialog.
When I click on the Button in Siebel application, the webpage dialog pops up and there is a text box and a Submit button.
When I was recording, I was unable to record the webpage dialog as it was not identified by Openscript recorder.
Hence, I recorded the webpage seperately and the standalone scripts runs fine. It is able to navigate to the page and enter the text in textbox and click submit button.
Now I am trying to integrate those Webpage XPath in my existing script but it fails to recognize the webpage or the textbox from the popup webpage dialog.
Has anyone able to figure out how to record the popup windows using OATS OpenScript? Please help.
    Thanks,
    Sapna

    Hi Deepu,
    Thanks for replying.
    web:window[@index='0' or @title='Enter Card Number']/web:document[@index='0']/web:body[@index='0']
    web:window[@index='0' or @title='Enter Card Number']/web:document[@index='0']/web:input_text[@id='txt_name' or @name='name' or @index='0']
    web:window[@index='0' or @title='Enter Card Number']/web:document[@index='0']/web:input_submit[@name='submit' or @value='Submit' or @index='0']
These are the XPaths I get when I record that webpage seperately.
Also when I was recording the webpage alongwith the siebel app, I got these XPaths for the same objects:
    /web:dialog_unknown[@text='Enter Card Number -- Webpage Dialog' and @winClass='Internet Explorer_TridentDlgFrame' and @index='0']/web:accText[@index='2']
    Submit Button
    /web:dialog_unknown[@text='Enter Card Number -- Webpage Dialog' and @winClass='Internet Explorer_TridentDlgFrame' and @index='1']/web:accPushButton[@index='0' or @name='Submit']
I also read in one of the forums that if the object is not added, I need to add it manually. How can i do that?:
Popup wb window is not detected by openscript
    Thanks,
    Sapna

  • Can't enter text in a box?

I have a government form that I created in LiveCycle and it automatically filled in the correct boxes with a text box.  In the design view mode the orange boxes exist but some boxes allow me to enter text and numbers and others will not.  I can't determine what is different from one box to the other.  I have deleted the boxes and started over, cutting and pasting from the boxes that work.  Help would be appreciated.

    Hi ,
I guess you have saved the form as static . Inorder to save the from as dynamic . Click on Save As then click on Adobe Dynamic XML forms.
Inorder to develop interactive forms you should also pre-view it in interactive format . Fot this click on File -> Form Properties - >Preview .Then Click on the preview type as interactive form and preview Adobe XML form as Dynamic XML form .Try this and let's see what happens.
    Thanks.
    Bibhu.

  • Input enabled cell to enter text

    Hi All,
I need to create a query which has an input enabled column where user can enter text up to 250 characters. Is this possible only using aggregation level? Is it possible to declare a characteristic to show up as a column and input enabled? I am thinking only key figures can be input enabled and they can accept only numbers but not characters.
I am new to BI Planning concept. Please let me know the best solution for my requirement.
    Thanks in Advance!

    Hi,
