Applescript  Conversion from Quarkxpress to Indesign

I am new to applescript and I am working on a project to convert an applescript for Quark Xpress 6.0 to Indesign CS4..
Here is the part of the code I am having trouble with now.  It works fine if the application is set to quark but fails if set to indesign.
tell document 1 of application "QuarkXPress"
activate
--loop once for each page in the document
repeat with a from 1 to count of spreads
--set view options so we can see what is happening
show spread a
set view scale to fit spread in window
The error message says "A application constant or consideration can't go after this property. and the bolded part of the above code is highlighted.
Thanks
Marshall

It fails because the script commands are quite different in InDesign. Choose Window->Library->Adobe InDesign CS4 to view a dictionary of commands that you can successfully give to InDesign. The command for zoom is quite different:
tell application "Adobe InDesign CS4"
    zoom active window given fit spread
end

  • From FrameMaker to InDesign

    Hi,
    I am new to this forum, and I am new to InDesign. I have actually never used InDesign, but I have many years of experience with FrameMaker.
    My situation is that many of my clients are interested in switching from FrameMaker to InDesigen, which means that the various applications I have developed for converting text into FrameMaker must now be changed to fit InDesign instead. I have been reading on the web about importing text into InDesign, but quite frankly I am not at all sure how to go about doing this, or if it is at all possible.
    With FrameMaker I develop applications in VB, which converts text from whatever format (xml, databases, ascii text files, etc.) into FrameMaker's MIF-format. These MIF-files contains all information needed for the publications, and they are simply read into frameMaker like any proprietary file, and there you have it. I do have an SDK for FrameMaker, but I don't use that for creating documents, as it is both slow and cumbersome to use.
    Is it possible to do something similar with InDesign?
    I need a way of converting which is very dynamic. I don't have a fixed template for every page, as no pages are identical. It is typically a flow of text with images, tables, lists, etc. which are presented on the page as they come. I need to be able to mark words for indexes, make lists of contents, make cross references between pages, scale images, use new master pages according to contents, and otherwise be able to format the text in any way that you would be able to do directly within InDesign.
    I would prefer my convertions to end up in files which can simply be opened (or imported) into InDesign without the user having to do further work (like handling templates or importing text into one chapter at a time). If it can be done in a separatate application without using an SDK, I would like that too, as they usually turns out to be slow. A typical publication would contain 500+ pages, several thousand images and tables, so I would prefer a method that doesn't require hours or days of data crunching (with FrameMaker it takes a couple of minutes to make such a complete 500+ pages publication.)
    Any advice is welcome. Even telling me that it would be stupid to switch from FrameMaker to InDesign, because I really don't see the point myself, but if my clients want it, then I do what I can to help them. But talking them out of it could also be a solution. :-)

    If clients ask you to switch their work from FrameMaker to InDesign, and after discussing it thoroughly, you and they agree that it's a good idea, then go for it! If you both agree that there's value, good, and if you both agree that it's not appropriate, good, too. Perhaps it's not appropriate at the present time, but perhaps reviewing the decision periodically, after you've both had time to research and experiment with InDesign and have some experience with converting old content, and have compared working in InDesign with converted content, and developing new content, you'll be better able to decide.
    Search Google for terms like "converting FrameMaker to InDesign," "FrameMaker vs InDesign," "compare FrameMaker and InDesign," "InDesign scripting," "InDesign and XML," "importing FrameMaker into InDesign," and similar terms, without quotes, for links to a wealth of discussions. You'll find many of my earlier posts on this subject. I often mention DTP Tools' (www.dtptools.com) commercial InDesign plug-in, MIF Filter, as one solution to consider. I have no connection to the company other than having used the product some, and having reviewed it for InDesign Magazine a couple of years ago. You can use the product free as much as you like, to see how well it works on your files. You can't save or print the conversions without purchasing a package of page-conversion credits; it works like a phone card. Depending on your designs and layouts, it may or may not suit your projects.
    Here's one from today on this forum: http://forums.adobe.com/message/3206944#3206944
    InDesign has a strong scripting capability, using applescript, vb, and/or javascript. It also has a useful XML import ability, but not round-trip like FrameMaker.
    The projects you describe sound more like InDesign-type page layout designs, than the usual FrameMaker single-flow documents, so perhaps InDesign would be suitable, especially if you and your clients find FrameMaker isn't completely satisfying. Be sure to look at FrameMaker 9 closely before leaving it - if you've been a long-time FrameMaker user and developer, you may have overlooked some of the newest features.

  • Need to import a Medical Dictionary from Quark to InDesign

    Just switched from Quark to InDesign for a Medical Journal and they need their dictionary to be loaded into InDesign.
    I have their .QUD file from Quark but am having difficulty loading it through the preferences.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks in advance!

    From your description I'm guessing a .qud is a Quark User Dictionary file from Windows XPress. If so, then it should be a simple text file.<br /><br />The best thing to do is open it in a text editor, make sure it all looks clean, and then paste all of the text into InDesign and run a spell check, keeping all of the words as you go. A bunch of clicks for the conversion, but it will create a user dictionary file as InDesign requires, which is a different format from Quark's.<br /><br />When done back up your new file from ~/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Linguistics/Dictionaries/Adobe Custom Dictionary/<language of the file>. (Mac location, Windows should be similar.)

  • Getting ÿþ as saved conversations from Lync in Outlook in Office 2013

    Hi,
    I've been trying to get to the bottom of this and have found similar posts, but no one seems to have an answer.
    When I IM someone using Lync 2013, they get a pop up notification but instead of the message they see ÿþ<.  Once they open the chat window, they can see my typed text.  Occasionally, certain people can't see the first line of my chat, but as
    long as they keep the chat window open, they can see everything new I type.
    All my conversations that are saved in outlook show ÿþ< for the text and are unreadable.  I've disabled the saving of conversations because they have become worthless.
    I believe it has to do with BOM but have not been able to find a way to fix this.
    If I copy a conversation from the chat window and paste it into Microsoft Word it shows ÿþ<, but if I paste it into notepad the conversation appears.
    (I had inserted a screenshot here, but am unable to because I am unable to figure out how to get my account "verified")
    I've tried changing the preferred encoding for outgoing messages: to Unicode (UTF-8) in Outlook, but this had no effect and I can't find a similar option in Lync 2013.
    (I had inserted a screenshot here, but am unable to because I am unable to figure out how to get my account "verified")
    I enabled logging for Lync and the event IDs that come up are 1, 11 and 12, to which I cannot find any information for at the moment.
    Any help and or suggestions would be appreciated.

    Hi,
    Did the issue happen only for you or for multiple users?
    Please try to delete Lync User Profile and information on Registry, then repair Office 2013.
    The path of Lync User Profile: %UserProfile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync
    The path for information on Registry: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Office\15.0\Lync\[email protected]
    Then test the issue again.

    Usually only Open Invoices and Unapplied Receipts are migrated from Old system to New Instance.
    Post Migration Reconciliation shall be tough in that scenario. Reconsider/Rediscuss with Client.
    Migration can be done using APIs or Custom Scripts using Standard Interfaces.
    Hope this is helpful

  • How do you Place rtf files from LibreOffice into InDesign CS6

    I am new to InDesign CS6. I am having a problem Placing LibreOffice rtf files into InDesign.
    I am using LibreOffice 4.3.2.2, Lotus WordPro, and Windows 7. I am saving my work in rtf files. Each page has two columns.
    Placing rtf files from WordPro into InDesign works with no problems, but - I wonder just how long WordPro will continue to work with Windows 7 so I would like to switch to LibreOffice.
    When I Place a rtf file that has two columns from LibreOffice into InDesign, I get a loaded text cursor, but nothing loads. I can take this same file, remove the columns so there is only one column, and it loads just as it should. Further, if I load the one column file into a Master set up for two columns, the file loads into two columns with all the proper formating.
    Please guide me in how to Place the LibreOffice two column rtf files into InDesign.
      Thanks.

    Thanks to everyone who read about my problem. I have solved it myself by using "RTF Import Options."

  • Since downloading Firefox 4, I am having problems archiving gmail conversations from my inbox view. Also, when I go to enter a new event in google calendar, I now have to click the cursor in the box to type the event (it used to let me just start typing).

    Since downloading Firefox 4, I am having problems archiving gmail conversations from my inbox view (either one or several conversations) as it says "No Conversations Selected" when I have selected one or several. Also, when I go to enter a new event in google calendar, I have to click the cursor in the box to type the event (it used to let me just start typing) or else it flips out and starts jumping to day view or another month. Does anyone know how to fix either of these?

    I have had this problem; but while trying to fix another problem, I reset my preferences for Firefox and it fixed this problem as well. To reset preferences, follow this link: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/Resetting%20preferences

  • Page numbers incorrect after conversion from Excel to pdf

    Page numbers incorrect after conversion from Excel to pdf
    ""This above link (thread:834599) is from a case back in 2011 that claims to solve this problem, but it does not solve this problem. I think that customer only cared about having continuous page numbering, not discrete page numbering per sheet.
    ========================
    I still have this issue in Acrobat XI and MS Office Professional Plus 2010. I keep upgrading to no avail. This regression has resulted in a huge time drain for me. If you fixed it, please explain how I can get my hands on the resolution.
    Previous versions of Excel and Adobe Acrobat enabled flexibility around the "Page #" of "Number of Pages" (Page &[Page] of &[Pages]) token, depending on context and usage. The "# of pages" token could represent EITHER the number of pages in the workbook OR the number of pages in the tab/sheet, depending on how you generated the PDF:
    You could select "Selected Sheets" and then select all or some of the individual sheets in the workbook, and the PDF would honor the discrete numbering of each of the sheets, so the first page of each sheet was p1 and the "# of pages" was the number of pages in the sheet; not the number of pages in the workbook; or
    You could select "Entire Workbook" and the PDF would honor continuous page numbers across all sheets, as a single document.
    Now, it only honors the total number of pages in the workbook, regardless of the method you use to publish to PDF: saving as PDF, printing to PDF, using "createPDF" from Acrobat plugin to Excel's menu ribbon; selecting all sheets, some sheets, or Entire Workbook; automatic First page number or "1" under Page Setup > Page> First page number. (This last option, btw, does restart every sheet at p1, but it hardly makes sense if the total number of pages is still the total number in the workbook instead of the number in the sheet.)
    I spent a lot of time trying each which way that the blog posts recommended and have tried this on multiple versions of Excel and Acrobat now.
    NONE of these time-consuming experiments gave me what I wanted.They all insist that "Page #" of "Number of Pages" (Page &[Page] of &[Pages]) is the total number of pages in the workbook or the total number of pages in the selected sheets combined.
    The numbering are correct in Excel Page Layout.
    The same issue happens when using LibreOffice calc. (Although, I never tested with Libre Office before, so I don't know that it ever worked).
    The workaround now is to create PDF for each spreadsheet one at a time, and then compile them using the Acrobat combine/binder feature. All alternatives are extremely time consuming and tedious. It used to be automatic. This is a major regression that has gone untreated for over a year now, maybe two years.
    My task takes infinitely more time to complete than it did with previous versions of Acrobat. That means that days are added to my project, when the functionality used to enable a quick pdf generation that was ready for review, now I have to do this very manual time-consuming set of steps to generate a draft. As the project has grown and more tabs are added, my pdf-generation task takes that much longer. We require lots of drafts. It used to be easy and fast. Now it is hard and time-consuming.
    In my opinion, the problem is not Excel; it is Acrobat because it was introduced with an upgrade in Acrobat, not an upgrade in Excel. The problem was introduced in Acrobat 9 or 10. Please provide a patch or add-on or something.

    If you are setting up the page numbers in Excel, the resulting PDF would display the the page numbers created in Excel. On Excel 2010 support page, (http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/excel-help/insert-and-remove-page-numbers-on-worksheets- HA010342619.aspx#BM2) is stated the following "tip" which indicates by default Excel 2010 starts numbering each tab with 1. Exel's workaround tip is below -
    Set a different number for the starting page
    Tip   To number all of the worksheet pages in a workbook sequentially, first add page numbers to all worksheets in a workbook, and then use the following procedure to begin the page number for each worksheet with the appropriate number. For example, if your workbook contains two worksheets that with both be printed as two pages, you would use this procedure to begin the page numbering for the second worksheet with the number 3.
    On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, click the Dialog Box Launcher next to Page Setup.
    On the Page tab, in the First page number box, type the number that you want to use for the first page.
    Tip   To use the default numbering system, type Auto in the First page number box.
    Also helpful in the same section is the note on viewing page numbers. To see if the page numbering dilemma originates in Excel make sure you are using the Page Layout View see below:
    Hide All
    If you want numbers shown on pages when you print a worksheet  you can insert page numbers in the headers or footers of the worksheet pages. Page numbers that you insert are not displayed on the worksheet in Normal view — they are shown only in Page Layout view and on the printed pages.
    Overall it may be easier not to create the page numbers in Excel but instead create then in Acrobat using the Headers and Footers option in Acrobat.  I hope this helps - it sounds like a frustrating issue you are experiencing.

  • Different Colors when printing from Photoshop and InDesign CS3

    Different Colors when printing from Photoshop and InDesign CS3
    I have the following problem:
    When printing from Photoshop or InDesign to a PostScript printer, Adobe recommends to let Photoshop handle the colors (I use the German version, so I don't know the exact term used, it changes slightly in all CS3 apps anyway).
    The manufacturer however told me to let the PostScript printer handle the colors.
    When I chose this option in Ps's print dialog and then choose ISO Coated as the printer pfofile, the results are fine.
    But when I place the exact same image in an InDesign file and print from InDesign or export to PDF and print via Acrobat, again using "Printer handles colors", the results are the exact same as if I had used Ps and chosen to let Ps handle the colors (way too saturated and a bit too red).
    ·Photoshop CS3
    ·InDesign CS3
    ·Test image is a TIFF in CMYK Fogra 27 Coated (which is also the working color space in Ps and ID.
    ·Printer: Xerox Docucolor 3535
    ·Printer profile: ISO Coated
    How can I make sure the printer handles the colors in other CS3 apps than Ps? I tried it with ID's print dialog (translated from the German version: Color Management > Options > Color Handling: PostScript-printer decides colors).
    Thanks a lot!

    RE: "You don't indicate what Xerox printers you have"
    In my first post I named it, is that the information you need?
    Docucolor 3535 using Splash 3535
    That's interesting, so I have to find a way to turn off the printer's Color Management function? I mailed them, hope they can tell me how to do it easily. They usually just tell me to not use any profiles and so on, but that's the general rule in this area, I'm really tired of hearing it. Everybody seems to think profiles and LAB mode are nuclear science and I should stay away from it.
    Anyway, the test image I'm using is a simple photograph (size A3, 300dpi), so no transparencies at all. I'm placing this image into an equally large ID file and print it from ID, then export it to PDF-X/3 and print it from Acrobat. Hope that helps.

    Hi ,
       I have a table with one of the column(EmpHiredate) datatype is char(10). It has value like "20141023". I need to display this value as date format(dd/mm/yyyy) in report.
    Following methods i tried in textbox expression but no luck.
    =Format(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value,"dd/MM/yyyy")
    =Cdate(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value)
    Error:
    [rsRuntimeErrorInExpression] The Value expression for the textrun ‘EmpHireDate.Paragraphs[0].TextRuns[0]’ contains an error: Conversion from string "20041023  " to type 'Date' is not valid.
    Is it possible to convert string to date using SSRS textbox expression ? Can anyone help me with the solution.
    Thanks,
    Kittu

    Hi Jmcmullen,
         Found one more issue on the same. I have one value like "00000000" for the column(EmpHiredate)
    , when i use above expression values(ex:"20141023")
    are displaying in dd/MM/yyyy format in report except value like "00000000" and giving following error:
    [rsRuntimeErrorInExpression] The Value expression for the textrun ‘EmpHireDate.Paragraphs[0].TextRuns[0]’ contains an error: Conversion from string "0000/00/00" to type 'Date' is not valid.
    Even i tried to pass its original value("00000000") as below but no luck.
    =IIF(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value = "00000000","00000000",Format(CDATE(MID(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value,1,4) + "/" + MID(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value,5,2) + "/" + MID(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value,7,2)),"dd/MM/yyyy"))
    Also tried this:
    =IIF(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value = "00000000","2000/10/21",Format(CDATE(MID(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value,1,4) + "/" + MID(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value,5,2) + "/" + MID(Fields!EmpHireDate.Value,7,2)),"dd/MM/yyyy"))
    Please Suggest.

  • How to call an applescript application from Office 2011 Excel VBA

    All:
    I have been pounding my head how to implement a working VBA application into the Mac environment. I have tried a number of approaches calling applescript from VBA. I would like to call my applescript application and pass one argument. My applescript application is as follows:
    <code>
    on run argv
    set theURL to (item 1 of argv)
    set p_path to do shell script "echo ~"
    set m_path to POSIX file p_path
    set theName to text -((offset of "/" in (reverse of characters of theURL) as text) - 1) thru -1 of theURL
    set theFile to (p_path & "/Downloads/" & theName)
    set macPath to (POSIX file theFile)
    do shell script "/usr/bin/curl " & theURL & " -o " & quoted form of POSIX path of macPath
    end run
    </code>
    My last attempt within VBA is:
    <code>
    Sub SaveMetaDataFile(URL As String, shortFileName As String)
    Dim scriptToRun As String
    Dim posixcmd As String
    posixcmd = ThisWorkbook.Path
    scriptToRun = "tell application " & posixcmd & ":MetaDataFileDownloadScript.app " & URL
    MsgBox "[" & scriptToRun & "]"
    MacScript (scriptToRun)
    </code>
    I first tried to call the script directly without the "tell application" and I still obtain an error. I also tried the following in VBA and I get the same error with the last lane of code:
    <code>
    scriptToRun = "set theURL to " & """" & URL & """" & Chr(13)
    scriptToRun = scriptToRun & "set p_path to do shell script " & """" & "/bin/echo ~ " & """" & Chr(13)
    scriptToRun = scriptToRun & "set m_path to " & """" & posixcmd & """" & Chr(13)
    scriptToRun = scriptToRun & "set theName to " & """" & shortFileName & """" & Chr(13)
    scriptToRun = scriptToRun & "set theFile to (p_path & " & """/Downloads/""" & " & theName)" & Chr(13)
    scriptToRun = scriptToRun & "set macPath to (POSIX file theFile)" & Chr(13)
    scriptToRun = scriptToRun & "do shell script " & """" & "/usr/bin/curl " & """" & " & " & " theURL " & " & " & """" & " -o " & """" & " & " & " quoted form of POSIX path of macPath"
    MsgBox scriptToRun
    'scriptToRun = scriptToRun & "do shell script " & """/usr/bin/curl """ & " & " & " theURL " & """ -o """ & " & " & " quoted form of POSIX path of macPath"
    MacScript (scriptToRun)
    </code>
    The above code is from the applescript application. The applescript application works well using the terminal via osascript. For example:
    xenas-imac:Census Work Xena$ osascript MetaDataFileDownloadScript.app http://www2.census.gove/acs20095yr/summaryfile/Sequence_Number_and_Table_numberLookup.xls
    xenas-imac:Census Work Xena$
    The whole goal is to download a file into the Download directory from Excel to allow the next step to import the file into Excel for the user. Any help here would be great!
    Thank you;
    Lori

    Update:
    Ok have the module almost working and matches the syntax within the test applescript I had created, but the VBA code via the MacScript() call is generating an invalid procedure or argument call. The following is the test applescript to compare the created string to be passed to VBA MacScript() function:
    <code>
    set appPath to quoted form of POSIX path of "Macintosh HD:Users:Xena:Desktop:Census Work:"
    do shell script "/usr/bin/osascript " & appPath & "MetaDataFileDownloadScript.app " & "http://www2.census.gove/acs20095yr/summaryfile/Sequence_Number_and_Table_numberLookup.xls"
    </code>
    The following is the VBA module that generates the above word for word as far as I can tell:
    <code>
    Sub SaveMetaDataFile(URL As String, shortFileName As String)
    Dim scriptToRun As String
    Dim posixcmd As String
    posixcmd = ThisWorkbook.Path
    posixcmd = posixcmd & ":"
    scriptToRun = "set appPath to quoted form of POSIX path of " & Chr(34) & posixcmd & Chr(34) & Chr(13)
    scriptToRun = scriptToRun & "do shell script " & Chr(34) & "/usr/bin/osascript " & Chr(34) & " & appPath & " & Chr(34) & "MetaDataFileDownloadScript.app " & Chr(34) & " & " & Chr(34) & URL & Chr(34)
    MsgBox "[" & scriptToRun & "]"
    MacScript (scriptToRun)
    End Sub
    </code>
    The message box in the above VBA code matches my test applescript file and I have taken the output of the MsgBox and used it in a test applescript and it works great, but VBA is throwing "Run-time error '5': Invalid procedure call or argument".
    Looking at Microsoft's definition it takes a string argument and I have made sure that scriptToRun is a string type, so at this point I suspect there is something wrong with the MacScript() funciton, or I am missing something above. Is there another way to call an applescript application from VBA outside the MacScript() function? Or is there something I am missing? Any help or suggestions is needed.
    Thank you;
    Lori (CodeXena)

  • ITunes will no longer play nor add to the library any mp3 files which I have created by conversion from a wav file.

    I am running iTunes 10 on XP Pro and it will no longer play those mp3 files which I have created by conversion from wav files.  I tried to delete some from the library and then re-add them but iTunes will not add them back to the library.
    Can anyone help solve this, please?

    Back up your purchased music before you upgrade, I've read at least 5 cases where purchased music has just gone.....missing.
    That is not supposed to happen, didn't happen to me or thousnds of other iTunes users, but you don't want to be the 6th person, do you?
    There are two things to try before you upgrade:
