AppleScript under 10.7 Lion

Hello everyone,
first, I am a beginner with apple and mac os.
I have wrote a script for 10.6 to use the spellchecker within my Java-Program:
tell application "Automator Runner"
set mySpellChecker to call method "sharedSpellChecker" of class "NSSpellChecker"
set foundLanguages to call method "availableLanguages" of mySpellChecker
end tell
which works nice under 10.6
But now under 10.7 even under the applescript console an error occurs at:
tell application "Automator Runner"
set mySpellChecker to call method "sharedSpellChecker" of class "NSSpellChecker"
set foundWords to call method "availableLanguages" of mySpellChecker
end tell
>  Expected end of line but found identifier.
Can anyone please give me a hint, what has changed from 10.6 to 10.7. In the Changelog I cant find either an AppleScript change or a change with the spellchecker API. Also other scripts from the web using the "to call method ..." fails with the same error.
Thanks for any reply in advice
Michael Coldewey

That Automator Runner trick was just a way to access Cocoa methods via its AppleScript Studio terminology - in your case, call method.  In Lion, the AppleScript Editor can use AppleScriptObjC (introduced in Snow Leopard), which calls Cocoa methods directly.  ASOC is the current framework, so Apple has been gradually removing the old AppleScript Studio stuff (which is deprecated) to "encourage" its use.
There are a couple of ways to use AppleScriptObjC in your script.  The first is to create a new Cocoa-AppleScript Applet from AppleSccript Editor's File > New from Template menu item - this is the easiest, but you can't run your script from the Editor (you need to run the applet), which makes debugging a bit of a pain.  The second way is to use the ASObjC Runner background application, which can be run from the AppleScript Editor (it also takes care of coercing results from Cocoa methods to their respective AppleScript classes).  Either way, your script snippet would look something like (including coercing the resulting NSArray to a list):
set mySpellChecker to current application's NSSpellChecker's sharedSpellChecker()
mySpellChecker's availableLanguages() as list

Is it possible to open iPhoto twice under os-x lion, to create a photobook on one desktop and to have a look to the photos in full size on the other desktop?

Ok let me ask you IF the IT department of your workplace does NOT want OS X installed on "THEIR" (The Companies) computers because of what they think is some type of security issue why are you trying to go against their wishes and install OS X on a computer that is NOT owned by you.
That could cost you your job.
If you continue down this path you will screw up the Windows install and have to take the system back to the IT department to get it fixed. What do you think they will say at that point?
Do as you like but you would be better off just buying your own Mac computer if you are set on using OS X as your personal operating system.

  • Shutdown Under Mtn. Lion Taking 5 Times Longer - Sys Log Included

I realize that there are a couple of other threads dealing with this issue, but they have veered off into directions that don't apply to my systems.  I'm posting a copy of my system log below--which looks pretty odd given what I'm experiencing.
Background:  I have two mid-2011 MacBook Airs...a 13-inch with a 256GB SSD and an 11-inch with a 128GB SSD.  The only difference in terms of installed software is that the 256GB model has more iTunes media files.  They are both running Mtn Lion 10.8.0 with all available updates.  Under Lion (all versions), my average shutdown time on both machines was  from 2-3 seconds.  Now, under Mtn. Lion, the shutdown time averages from 12 to 15 seconds.  It's really consistent in that 12 to 15 second range.
When I decided to troubleshoot this issue, I figured it would be easy because I thought that the system log would clearly indicate what was taking the extra time.  However, I've posted the relevant part of my system log at the end of this message.  It shows no seconds of elapsed time during the shutdown--but, as indicated my my comments added to the log--the actual showdown time until the screen went black was about 14 seconds.
Based on comments in other threads, I tried deleting all of my launchdaemons but that didn't help.  Also, I don't have Parallels installed--which seemed to be implicated as a problem in other threads.
Does anyone have any ideas?  The system log is below.  Thanks.

Thanks; however, doing a SafeBoot was one of the first things I tried.  Also, I always SafeBoot after any type of system software install or update.
However, I may have solved my own problem.  In the log entry I posted, I was surprised to see references to several Canon backgrounder apps.  Then I remembered that I had installed some Canon print drivers/software for a high-end, networked, ImageRunner printer/scanner that is available to me in my work area at the college I work for.  Because of other hardware available to me, I've never used it as a printer or scanner.  Further, after checking on the Canon Web site, I realized that the software I installed was not the latest available.
I used FindAnyFile to locate all Canon ImageRunner drivers and software installed on my system and deleted it.  I then manually deleted all logs and caches and rebooted.  So far, my shutdowns are back in the 2-3 second range.  I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
This won't help others who are having a similar problem except that they might look for background apps being quit during the shutdown process and to make sure that whatever software they came from is Mtn. Lion compatible.

  • ITunes and Safari freeze under OS X Lion

    Hi,
I bought a brand new 15" MacBook Pro (See specs below), with OS X 10.7 pre-installed. Until I noticed anything, I upgraded to 10.7.1. Then, while using my computer casually (browsing, music, mails, etc.), my Safari kept freezing. My iTunes had the same behavior.
    WHAT HAPPENS
    - Safari windows/tabs would freeze, but mouse would still move, I could open Dashboard, Dock was responsive and I could navigate through some other apps for a few seconds. Then, all other apps would freeze too, only the mouse kept moving.
    - iTunes music would stop momentarily, during around 20 to 40 seconds. Control was still showing "Playing" status, even thouh the time cursor was stuck.
    - After around 20 to 40 seconds, everything would come back to normal.
    - This problem occurs variably, from a few times a day to a few times an hour!
    WHAT I TRIED
    - I switched to the 750GB Toshiba hard drive that came with my MBP (I installed a SSD right after I bought the laptop) and ran the brand new Lion 10.7.0 install, problem would still occur
    - I used my computer with Safari and iTunes closed, problem didn't occur after two days of usage.
    - I ran Disk Utility, no problem with SSD/HDD reported
    CONLCUSION
It seems like the problem is related to Safari and iTunes under OS X Lion.
    SPECS
    MacBookPro8,2
Processor  2.2 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory  8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
    Graphics  AMD Radeon HD 6750M 1024 MB (1680 x 1050)
Hard Drive OCZ Vertex 3 240GB I installed myself
    Software  Mac OS X Lion 10.7.1 (11B26)
You guys have the same problem? Know any solutions?
    Thank you!
    Sincerely,
    Olivier

Not much to say for me except maybe this.My computer was running SL and so slow and so many times the wheel of death.I thought I am going to reinstall SL.That failed due to a missing file.OK went back to my Leopard disks installed that first and straigt after SL and got that to work. Then after a while I became brave purchased LION and installed that. It did not go sowell and I kept asking and telling what happened here in the forum finally I had success and now all perfect.I am sorry that what helped me is not working for you. When I runned AppleJack just with one command everything happening automatic and I studied the screen.Every time I was running that program things were being repaired.I could see like this was say acv and should vca just imaginair sort of simular checks.I had 8000 adresses in my adress book at a certain moment and could not get that fixed but the reason was I selected a wrong modification.Bad luck.I do not know if you have disks like for Leopard and SL. I played and played and at the end you know exactly what you do.I am not so pleased that there is no phisical place like a DVD for Lion.I now know you might purchase a stick with the program and next time I will do that.
Now nice the download started from the Apple shop.I had only pushed buy now and normally buying on line you get an oppotunity to see the price first. Not so with the Apple shop bang the purchase was done and I was confronted with automatic downloading and installation .Yes they are clever these Apple commercial boys.
Before you know you hang . New experience for me a experienced on line buyer . But they fooled me this time.
I am not upset but as said I regret not to have something in my hand I can stick in and do the trickAlso with windows computers I have good experiences starting from scratch.I am not advising that it will be your solution but I leave you now to it maybe  somebody els has better ideas.Again Sorry my suggestions did not work for you.

  • Toggle Finder sort order with AppleScript under Lion 10.7?

For years I've been using this AppleScript to toggle the sort order of a Finder window:
if sort direction of column id size column of list view options of window 1 is normal then
set sort direction of column id size column of list view options of window 1 to reversed
    else
set sort direction of column id size column of list view options of window 1 to normal
    end if
(You can replace size with kind, name, modification date, etc.)
But ever since Lion, this no longer works!
The little arrow in the column header DOES change, but the items do not re-sort.
Any way to get this working?

Why not just click on the columns?

  • How to convert OS X 10.3.9 Applescripts to run on Lion?

I have recently upgraded my computer from a G4 iMac running Panther to an Intel 21" screen model which runs Lion 10.7.3. I found that neither the Set Up Assistant or Migration Assistant worked as far as transferring the contents of the old system and therefore transferred it manually.
Included in the contents transferred were a number of Appleworks spreadsheets which worked in conjunction with a series of Applescripts to produce various types of textile patterns, and another series which analysed stock exchange prices. I have found that basicly none of these work and wonder if there are any programs or compilers which could be used to convert them. I have bought iWorks and both Numbers and Pages do not produce satisfactory results which is somewhat disappointing. The thought of having to learn a new Applescript volcabulary and then rewrite the Scripts is somewhat daunting hence my enquiry.
Any suggestions will be very welcome and much appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    David Gurney.

I have prepared copies of both the spreadsheet and script along with an outline of how the set up works. Also I have a screen shot of a fiished pattern so that you can see what is produced.
              4/4 Twill Drafting.
This set up produces unlimited numbers of patterns in basic 4/4 twill weave from which a large number of fabrics are woven. The software is in two parts:-
              1. A spreadsheet has been prepared in the form of a grid of 130 columns X 150 rows. Along the top of this are four horizontal rows ( 1 - 4) which represent the four shafts of a loom. Along the right hand side of the grid are four vertical columns which intersect with the horizontals to form what is called a tie up box. The numbers inserted into the tie up box represent lifts so that on the first lift  shafts 1 and 2 are raised, on the second lift shafts 2 and 3 are raised, on the third lift shafts 3 and 4 are raised and finally on the fourth lift shafts 1 and 4 are raised.
To produce twill weave the threads running the length of a piece of fabric, namely the warp, are simply threaded onto the  shafts of the loom in a sequence of 1, 2, 3, and 4 which is repeated. Likewise the weft threads which run across the width of the cloth are also repeated in the same sequence.
    2.          The script is arranged so that it produces one repeat of the desired design. This is done by running the script and then entering the colour of each warp and weft thread by means of the colour picker. In practice I have produced a series of different palettes so that the number of colours available are considerable. To illustrate how this works  enter the  following example:-
              (a) In response to the dialog enter the total  number of warp threads, say 8 and define the colour of each one by means of the colour picker. I would suggest you enter say 4 black threads followed by 4 red threads. NOTE When you have entered the last thread,  No. 8, click on a white square in the colour picker and you will then be asked to repeat the process for the weft. The script will then produce a pattern draft showing one repeat of the pattern plus a draft of the way the shafts on the loom are threaded up and another draft of the way the shafts are lifted. Each thread is numbered and the colour is also indicated for both warp and weft.
              (b) Once you have the repeat you can select the square and copy it and then you can paste it onto a finer grid so as to produce the overall design. I use a grid of 256 columns by 512  rows and have another script which pastes the selection a multiple number of times both horizontally and vertically.
    3.           Once you have the desired pattern you can "Save as" which enables you to retain the basic grid for further use and at the same time preserves the actual draft which you have produced.

I am sorry but I cannot send you the 130 X 150 Grid as it is a .cwk document and is not accepted by Lion. I would suggest you see if you can access an older system and create a .cwk spreadsheet grid with the squares reduced to 12 point by means of the format instruction for both rows and columns.
I will be interested to see what you think about this problem.
    Kind regards,
    David Gurney.

  • How can I uninstall ClicktoFlash from Safari under OS X Lion server?

ClicktoFlash is installed on my Lion server (mac mini) and it's driving me crazy. I can't figure out how to uninstall it since it doesn't even list under the Help>Installed Plug-ins and I can't find a ~/Library folder (secondary question: does Lion server not have a Library folder for each user folder?)

There have been two versions of it. The older version is a plugin, and could be in either of the following folders:
    /Library/Internet Plug-Ins
    ~/Library/Internet Plug-Ins
To open the user Library folder, hold down the option key and select Go > Library from the Finder menu bar.
The newer version is a Safari extension, and you can disable or remove it by selecting Safari > Preferences > Extensions from the Safari menu bar.

  • How to start Apple Hardware Test under OS X Lion

Since I made the upgrade to OS X Lion I cannot start Apple Hardware Test with the old method that works under Snow Leopard.
Under OS X 10.6.8 I used to keep D key pressed until a picture appeared in the middle of the screen. With Lion it doesn't work, even under Wi-Fi internet connection.
    Any suggestions?

  • Standby of iMac under OS X Lion 10.7.1

I installed OS X Lion on my 20" 2009 Intel iMac and noticed a change of behaviour in standby. The transition into standby is now immediate but the standby state appears shalower than before - the screen is black but there some noise coming out from the machine, either the fan, the HD or both of them still work. An external USB self power 2.5" HD remains in "active" state indicated with a LED. Under Snow Leopard, the computer was appearing totally off and supposedly, it was consuming less energy and wearing out less internal components. Is there any way to restore the previous standby behaviour? Anything to configure? I could not find anything.
Does anyone experience the same thing?

Ok, in this case it sounds like it could be a Library issue. Now we need to boil it down to whether or not it is a User issue (only happens in your user account) or a System issue (happens on all accounts), and from there whether or not it is hardware or software.  I would recommend creating a test user account (>System Preferences> Users and Groups> Addition button in lower left corner). Start up in the other account and try putting the computer to sleep again.  If it works, great, that shows it is a user issue and I will do some further research as to how to fix that.  If it is a system issue, it can be solved by going to the Finder application, clicking Command+Shift+G (a command to go to a window).  If you then type in "/var/vm" without quotation marks, it will take you to the hidden folder where your computer's sleep image resides. If you then drag that sleep image file to the desktop (and authenticate using an admin password) it will then rebuild the sleep file for the computer.
Before you do any of this, I would recommend a SMC and PRAM reset if that has not yet been attempted. SMC deals with power controls on the computer and PRAM a few other system files. I have included the KBase articles in case you are not familiar with these resets.

  • Running Applescript runtime apps in Lion

I have just installed Lion. I have several Applescripts that I use for some automated actions an dcreated using Applescript Editor. In Snow Leopard I saved these as runtime app files and put them in my dock. When I installed Lion I noticed a banned symbol through the dock icons and, not surprisingly, got an error mesage when I tried to run them.
To fix the problem I opened the original Applescript file with the Applescript Editor then saved them as runtime apps. I got no compile errors in this process and all the apps are now working in Lion.
A similar problem will likely occur with APP files created with Automator. That will not be as easy to fix as the source code is not usually available.
The only remaining difficulty for me was getting rid of the banned symbol in the app's icon. I found that I had to:
make a copy of the original app (actually located on another Mac - Lion had changed all the icons on my Macbook)
change its file suffix from .app to .txt (so Lion would not change the icon without asking).
Get Info on the renamed file,
    cmd-C on its icon
Get Info on the recompiled App file
    cmd-v on its icon
So before upgrading to Lion, one tip is to make sure you have copies of your original Applescript source files and copies of their .APP files but with the suffix changed to, say, .TXT.

  • Recovery Disk Assistant Under Mavericks Says "Lion"

Problem:  Mac Pro with soft RAID died.  I think it got a hosed up OS update.  Since it has a soft RAID, it does not have a recovery partition.
Apparent solution:  We also have MacBook Pro that was, until yesterday, still running Lion.  I upgraded it to Mavericks.
On the MacBook Pro, now running Mavericks, I am following the instructions in OS X: About Recovery Disk Assistant to create a Mavericks recovery disk on a USB thumb drive ("jump drive," "USB stick," or whatever you want to call it).
Everything went fine until I ran the Recovery Disk Assistant, which seems to be claiming that it's creating a Lion recovery disk rather than a Mavericks recovery disk.  Two possible explanation come to mind:
The recovery partition on the MacBook Pro it's copying onto the jump drive is still a Lion recovery partition, despite having upgraded to Mavericks, and it really is in fact creating a Lion recovery disk.
The Recovery Disk Assistant has outdated graphics and boiler-plate text, so despite what it says, it really is creating a Mavericks recovery disk.
Anybody know which is the case?

Hmmm...  Looks like it may not ultimately matter, because when I boot the Mac Pro with the option key down, it doesn't seem to see the USB drive anyway...
Nevertheless, if any of you know the answer, I'd be interested to know, just in case it comes in handy elsewhere.

  • Time Machine is slow under OS X Lion.

Ever since i downloaded and installed lion yesterday, Time Machine takes a really long time to initiate a backup to my Time Capsule. Anyone else having this issue and/or have a solution?

It may not be true for everyone, but the way I'm reading the posts above, it doesn't sound like many of them are concerned about the one-time update of a few GB of data following the upgrade.
The only change made to my configuration was installing Lion OS.  It spends 10's of minutes "Indexing Backup..." as it's doing right now.  It wasn't that way before upgrading to Lion OS.  I bought the Time Capsule to enable wireless backups, so although for troubleshooting, I could connect to the unit with a cable, I'd rather not do that more than once.  Since it's the indexing that takes a long time, I doubt a cable would fix things, but I may consider doing it sometime soon.  But I need to find some time when it's NOT backing up, which is tricky now.
    Configuration:
MacBook Pro 15" (Feb 2011 model)
Lion OS, having upgraded from what was previously the latest OS
    Time Capsule
No known wireless issues (Data rates are good, I don't see channel conflicts/interference, etc.)
I know my system spends more time saving things off since I haven't made an exception for web browser data, so most hours have an update of the size of whatever I've viewed in the last hour (I know how to fix that, but it was that way before Lion when things were better).  I usually use Google Chrome.

  • My 2009 Mac Pro has trouble sleeping under OS X Lion.

If it sleeps at all, it takes 5-10 minutes to go to sleep. Even sleeping from the Apple menu or the power button usually doesn't work. This is a problem because the thing uses like 150W at idle, and if I let it run all the time my electric bill doubles.

I haven't slept in way too many hours.... idle 150W is probably norm.
There use to be problems (2008) not being able to come out of sleep.
Issues with running on a UPS that was too small (less than 850W / 1100VA).
Tried SMC Reset once? unplug and press power on button 10 seconds, then release, and reconnect and try to power up?
Multiple members here with 2009s have said that they had to zap pram/nvram in order to get Lion installed.
my money is always to go for clean install and test new OS, migrate data, and keep SL around for awhile. Make sure no conflicts or driver issues.
USB cables and devices (and drivers, like for printer etc) can cause panics, sleep issues, as can FW800 (shorted port, bad cable) so I would only trust them when they have been verified and tested - the problem goes away or not when removed from the system.
I see LaCie and Seagate drives causing Lion issues. OWC are fine.

  • HT201250 Time Machine App does not start under OS X Lion

I tried to restore an item from my back-up, however the Time Machine App does not start.
I use the latest version of OS X Lion 10.7.5 (Build 11G63).
I used the work around by opening my back-up volume with the finder and copied the wanted item.
However, this is not the correct approach I think.
Does anybody have a solution to my problem?

Just the last addition to my question.
The modifications of the access rights took very, very long. In the end I cancelled the process.
Nevertheless, time machine now works correctly. As far as I can see it.
If annybody runs into similar problems. The solution is I think just to modify the access rights on the back-up volume to read and write access for everyone.
Probably OS X Lion added an undocumented feature to the time machine.

  • Firefox is not remembering passwords under OS X Lion

I did a clean install of Lion and then Firefox 5.
Firefox doesn't retain log-in credentials for any sites, despite "remember passwords" being activated and cookies being allowed. I have it set up the same way as my SnowLeopard system, which remembers credentials fine.

Do you mean names and passwords in the Password Manager or do you mean that you are no longer logged on to (remembered by) websites after closing and restarting Firefox?
There is a difference between remembering the name and password in the Password Manager and a "remember me" check box on a web page.
The latter usually involves the creation of a special "remember me" cookie that is stored on your computer and that is send to the server.
If that "remember me" cookie is removed or gets corrupted or is not send to the server then the server won't remember you and you need to sign in once again.
