Applets compiled with new SDK won't run in old environments?

Dear all,
An applet of mine always ran fine, until i recomplied is using the current J2sdk1.4.2. Now, my own Netscape 4.8 suddenly refuses to load the applet (throws a "Classformaterror: bad major version number" in my face). Also, I'm getting complaints from people using Explorer 5.5.
I tried recompiling it with version 1.4.1_07 (the only older version I could find in the archive), but that doesn't help either.
Am I right in thinking it is the compiler that is to blame, and if so, is there a way to complie applets so that they are compatible with older browsers/environments?
RS

Maybe try:: javac -target 1.1 MyApplet.javaI don't guarantee it will fix the problem.

  • New HD won't run without old one...

    hello.
After lots of help from my educated peers on this discussion site, i installed a 2nd hard drive into my G5 quad power pc.
I then used carbon copy cloner to clone the old drive onto the new one(because i recently moved and forgot my install disk on the west coast), and when i re-booted, i was able to boot from the old HD (which still barely works), and then i was able to select the new HD in system prefs - startup disk, and then re-booted agian, and it would boot up on the new HD, and work great.
And every time after that, it would always boot from the new HD, and work fine.
Except that the old HD is still in the other bay, apparently working in conjunction with the new one.
I know this because I cannot get the new HD to boot if it's the only HD in the machine. I tried both HD bays.
I even tried to boot up while holding down the Option key, but the HD won't show up at all. Tried both HD bays.
    Any thoughts?
I'm having my friend ship my my install disk, but if carbon copy cloner is as good as it says, i shouldn't have to do a clean install and have to go through the hassle of doing a full backup, and restoring....etc..etc..etc.
    Any thoughts?
i tried every combination of HD bays with both HDs.
The new one just won't work by itself.
And, the old HD needs to be in the top(primary bay), or else nothing works.
    thanks!

Ya know, today, my Mail program is acting very funky.
I launch it, and I get the spinning color wheel immediately, and then it quits itself.
Also, when I reboot, i see a quick flash of weird graphics on the monitor for a split second.
    Doesn't look right.
Oh, and now, I'm finding out that the machine randomly reboots from either HD.
I just tried to reboot, and it tried to boot from the old HD in the other bay. ( i know this because the old HD takes 5 minutes to boot, and the internal fans run at full speed during the whole boot up process ).
Now, i tried to reboot again, and it booted fine from the new HD>
    Weird.
    maybe i'll try super duper.
Problem is that the old drive took 2 full days to clone when i used CCC.
The old HD is so sluggish that it is barely usable.
Hopefully i can get a full clone out of it.
Regardless, i'm just going to have to do a clean install to feel comfortable about this machine at this point.

  • Where can I get a download for an earlier version of firefox the new version won't run on my computer

I downloaded version 4 and replaced the old files. The new version won;t run because my Mac dose not have an Intell prossesor. I uninstalled the new version and I cant find the old version to download.

Firefox 4 requires at least OS X 10.5 and an Intel Mac. There is a third party version of Firefox 4 that runs on OS X 10.4/10.5 and PPC Macs, for details see http://www.floodgap.com/software/tenfourfox
If you prefer, you can get the latest version of Firefox 3.6 from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html

  • Applet compiled with 1.4 not running in IE 6

I have a java applet when compiled with the 1.3 java sdk that came Oracle, runs correctly in IE 6. The applet opens a socket.
When I compile it using 1.4 java sdk from sun and run it in IE 6 it does not work.
When I installed the 1.4 SDK I selected to use it as IE's default java machine.
Note if I look in the internet options, settings, view objects it shows the 1.4.1 jre twice.
Note I can not remove the 1.3 jre that comes with Oracle as the installation is dependant on it.
The java classes included in my applet is
    import java.net.*;
    import java.io.*;
    import java.text.*;
    import java.awt.*;
    import java.lang.Thread;
    import java.applet.*;
I have the sdk bin directory early in the path and class path enviroment includes rt.jar from the 1.4 sdk.
I have even been into the reg and edited IE's classpath.
Anybody help, how do I know what jre, IE is using or why the applet won't run in IE6. Both versions run in Appletviewer.
Once I get this working I want to add javax and org classes to start passing XML over the socket anybody got advise on this also.

there are a couple of things to try with this. first is to try the class out with the java plugin enabled - this makes IE run the 1.4.1 VM, instead of the default 1.1 VM in IE. if this works, you probably have a version conflict in your code, and could try compiling with
    '-target 1.1'
in your arguments. The problem I'm having is to do with finding the referenced classes in the applet. Try commenting EVERYTHING out of your applet (except 'init') and then running it. if the applet loads, the problem is that any class you try to instantiate inside the applet is not found by the browser. (NB you get the same error message with a version conflict as with a missing class file, very helpful...).
I'm not on this list much so if you want to talk more, or if you've solved this problem, please email me at [email protected]

  • Must not combine new AIRSDK with Compiler with FLEX SDK?

    Hi Guys
I've found this whole SDK overlay business a mess and very confusing. I've found this document
    - http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/articles/ane-android-devices.html
    which states
'The distribution of the AIR SDK with ASC 2.0 is for pure ActionScript development only. It should not be combined with an existing Flex SDK.
To support Flex application development with newer versions of the AIR SDK, an AIR SDK overlay distribution that does not include ASC 2.0 needs to be overlaid over the Flex SDK bundled with Flash Builder 4.7.'
So if you are doing pure AS3 development there is no longer any need to do any 'overlaying' of one SDK Folder onto another.  You just need to get the latest AIR SDK with complier ( http://www.adobe.com/devnet/air/air-sdk-download.html )
You should then update the AIR SDK if using Flash Builder via (  http://helpx.adobe.com/flash-builder/kb/overlay-air-sdk-flash-builder.html ) (Note it still uses the term 'overlay' but you are not really overlaying but replacing).
Can someone from Adobe confirm please ?
    Thanks

You must use Flex 2.0.1 Hotfix 3.  No later version of Flex works.  This means you must use Flex Builder 3 (with Flex 2.0.1 runtime for your project) and you cannot use Flash Builder 4.5.
This holds true for their 2008 Xcelsius version and their new 4.0 Dashboard version.  Wish they'd update their runtime already...

  • Brand new macbook won't run off battery, only when plugged in

I just go my new macbook last week and being new to mac computers, I didn't realize that it won't run from just the battery power until last night. The battery light shows it's fully charged. If i'm working with it plugged in and it becomes unplugged, it shuts down and when I reconnect the power cord, it resumes from the same webpage or whatever I was last working on. I opened up the battery compartment and removed the battery and then held the power button for 5 seconds, but that didn't fix the problem. Does anyone know what I might try or if something needs to be set up in order to run off the battery? Thanks! Leigh

    Hello leighdk,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
You can by all means take some good advise from the people on this board in response to you problem.
But here is the best advise, especially since you're new to Mac.
Call Apple Care or take it back to the store and have them check it out. It is under warranty. You have 14 days from the date of purchase to return the Mac for a completely different or give it back because you do not like it. they may try to charge you a restocking fee but this should not be the case since there is an issue with you machine.
Call Apple, see what they say... Then if you can't get it resolved then post back and maybe we can give you some sound advise.

  • Old Flash in new Firefox won't run, no warnings.

Opened my laptop using a current version of FF but with Flash 11.9. Viewed one of my pages with Flash content and.... nothing, just an empty div. No warnings that Flash was out of date, etc. So if I have this right FF won't run out of date Flash for security reasons. Fine. I've always seen warnings in these cases. But apparently if Flash is old enough FF just doesn't bother. Visitors have no idea what is happening. It just looks bad.
Is this correct? What is the recommended way of dealing with this from a developer's viewpoint?

We strongly recommend that users always run the latest version of Flash Player.  Running an old version puts users at risk for malware infection.  The vast majority of users are opted in to background update and are kept updated automatically, but there are users that for whatever reason have chosen to stick with an old, vulnerable version of Flash Player.  While this is a bad idea, people are certainly free to do it.  The upside is that the affected population that you're describing is pretty small.
The upgrade story will actually get better over time.  The latest versions of both Google Chrome and Internet Explorer include Flash Player as a built-in component, distributed with the browser.  Users are always updated with the latest version of Flash, and new updates are delivered inline via the Chrome updater or Windows Update respectively.  Mozilla has spent a few years talking about how Flash needs to go away, while the other browser vendors have been investing in modernized plug-in interfaces and improvements in plug-in security, and unfortunately the prioritization is showing in the user experience.  We're hopeful that Windows 10 will pick up the majority of the WinXP and Vista stragglers as well as many of the Win7 - Win8.1 users, which means that the whole Flash update problem for a very large population of people will be solved in IE once people upgrade.
It's hard to say what's at the root of the specific issue you're describing.  With the major browsers on 4 or 6 week major update cycles (we publish monthly to ensure we can catch and address any new injections in the browsers that might come up in nightly/beta versions before they hit the general population, and to align with Microsoft patch tuesday), so you're talking something like 18 months worth of changes between the Firefox version you're running and the version of Flash that you're running.  Everything at Mozilla gets done with bugs, and we'd definitely encourage you to file a bug on the user experience that you're seeing.  They've been operating from a reactive place lately, and some of the changes that impact Flash definitely appear to be a little slapdash.  It's ultimately good for them to hear from the developer community and not just me all the time, but feel free to add me to the CC: list in the bug.
We ultimately have no control over the longevity of a particular build of Flash -- there are way too many external variables -- and we're also investing a huge amount of effort in proactive security work (and it's been our top engineering priority for years).  So each build usually includes large numbers of changes designed to either harden the player or address responsibly disclosed issues from researchers, the larger security and computer science communities and whatever the latest auditing and testing tools we can get our hands on are.  The continuous stream of innovation and ingenuity in the offense space is impressive, but keeps us pretty busy.  Browser-side changes can easily break older versions of the plug-in, and running an old version is just a bad idea.
So we've really streamlined the installation process to keep people on current versions, and Windows 10 will hopefully be a massive shift away from older, more vulnerable versions of Windows.  The landscape is so different than it was even 4-5 years ago.. the days of running anything for years (or months) in your browser are long gone.  The pace isn't going to slow down anytime soon, either.

  • PL/SQL will compile with warnings but will not run

I have a pl/sql package that will compile with warnings but no errors but when i try to run it I get an ORA-6508 error telling me there is an error somewhere in the package but I can't find it.
I have two user schemas that use 2 slightly different versions of the package. I had to make slight code changes to one of the versions and when I made those changes it stopped running. The second version compiles and runs correctly.
After going through a line by line comparison the first copy was still not running. I copied the second version of the code into the broken schema and commented out the additional lines of code that are not needed in this version.
When I tried to compile and run this version it still fails with the same error.
I am using Oracle XE and the databases are small.
I can send on the code if necessary.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?
    Thanks

I tried doing what you suggested but there are no errors as it is compiling correctly.

  • O.T.  New Macs Won't Run Tiger

    For information :
Over on another Adobe Forum I came across a thread which pointed out that the latest Mac incarnations will not boot up with the Tiger software. So, if you or your software don't like
Leopard, now installed as standard, you can't go back to 10.4xxxx

This is true of all macs, Malcolm. They can never successfully boot from any version of the OS earlier than the one they ship with. So if your mac came with 10.4.7, it is iffish whether you can boot from a retail disk even of Tiger (which would have 10.4.0, of course.)
That's always been the way. A mac that came with system 9 couldn't run system 7, either.

  • 64-bit Xeon with Win2k3 app won't run

    Hi,
    I've read Technote f760350a regarding Itanium 64-bit
processors not being supported. Does this apply to the Xeons?
    We are running a Xeon 5160 on W2k3 R2 Std x64. Jrun 4 Updater
6 appears to install fine. I had it using JRE 1.4.1.03 at first,
then installed 1.4.2.14. The admin interface comes up fine.
Needless to say once I install the files for our internal app I get
    the message :
    %1 is not a valid Win32 application.
When trying to access the default page.
Is this a misconfiguration thing or is this a 64-bit lack of
    support issue??
    Thanks.

It is because xCode 3 setting are set to be used with Objective-C 2.0.
This mean you must have a runtime environement (OS) compatible with that technologie.
That technologie is new in X.5. So it can only run on X.5 for now.
So if you use the garbage colector you can't run that app. in system prior to X.5.
(I think it's default is on)
Cause when it is on all relese an retain call are ignore by the compiler.
So It can't work at all without a garbage colector compatile runtime system.
I don't have xCode 3 and X.5 yet so I can't tell you what setting you got to change.
But I've read about this new OBJ-C release and I've read about that.
Luckly someone else on this site will be able help you more.
But you can check in the xCode documentation on how to make your software backward compatible. That sould get you some usefull info.

  • New version won't run and crashes, help please? [iOS]

My adobe acrobat pdf reader updated itself to the new DC version and it will not run on my iPad running ios 8.3! When I select the icon for Adobe acrobat dc it runs the opening screen and then moves back to the iPad main screen. If I double press the main iPad button I can see acrobat is running but if I select it I am briefly shown the last open file and then it switches back to the main iPad screen.
I desperately need some files which are stored on the device so can the programme be reset?

    Hi Chris,
Could you force the Acrobat DC app to close and restart it?
Force an app to close in iOS - Apple Support
Does the Acrobat DC app launch successfully after that?
The error message is displayed by the desktop version of Apple iTunes.  Unfortunately, I am not able to find out what exactly is causing the problem with nested folders in iTunes.
Here's the old forum discussion that I found.
Cant backup files that are in folders on my iPad
Please see the last reply in the discussion.
However, if you are unable to launch the Acrobat DC app successfully, you won't be able to change folder names or structure.
Is there no way the app on the iPad can be reset without deleting it or is it possible to reinstall the previous software version which was stable?
Please let us know if force-closing and restarting the app helps.  But if you uninstall any iOS app (not just Acrobat DC or Reader), iOS will erase all of the associated app data (including your PDF document).

  • MacBook with new HD won't boot from Install Disk

    Hi there,
My MacBook's HD went on me the other day - froze computer, grey screen, flashing question mark, loud beep, etc. I bought a new HD, installed it without any problems (I thought!), but now I can't get the computer to start with the original Install Disk. On start-up, I have a light grey screen, and can hear the fan running, but that's it. At one point, on start-up while holding down the D key, I got the Language selection menu, but my cursor was frozen in the left hand corner and I couldn't do anything but restart. Now nothing comes up or else I get the "You need to restart your computer...." message on a grey screen.
Any ideas how I can get the Install Disk with Disk Utilities to work?
    Thanks .....

Unfortunately, it sounds like you have a hardware problem beyond the hard drive. Even if there was no hard drive installed at all, you should still be able to startup from the the original install disk. Do you hear a "chime" at startup? If not, then you definitely have a hardware problem. You should take your MacBook into a local Apple store and make an appointment with the Mac Genius (or another local Apple Authorized Service provider). If you can't startup from the original install disk by holding down on the "c" key or holding down on the "option" key and then selecting the install disk, you have a hardware problem that can't be resolved with troubleshooting here.

  • Are older applets incompatible with newer browsers?

My website's home page has a very cool but fairly old rippling water applet; www.marinerboatrental.com
Recently this applet (and the pic it's over) isn't working on some pc's with updated IE7, (yet still does fine in Firefox on the same pc(s).
I was wondering if this is because this applet is too old (8+ years) to remain compatible with some new versions of certain browsers, so I searched java.com and found the following help info page -
    http://java.com/en/download/help/jvm_applet_issue.xml
So now I need to know how to go about upgrading this applet to be compatible with the Sun JVM. Does anyone know how to make this happen?

Whatever the problem is that isn't it. That issue has to do with applets built to the very old MS VM which wasn't really Java. But your applet does not fall into that category.
It works on my IE 7 without problems so I suspect the problem lies elsewhere. Possibly this is some sort of Vista bug. You need to get actual error information for what is happening. You can do this on the computers where it doesn't work by going in the browser to Tools -> Sun Java Console. If there is no such menu item then the problem is Java is not installed, assuming it is installed there will probably be some sort of output in there that will tell you something useful.
For the record when it works the console says
    Name: PoolMenu Version 1.0
    Author: David Griffiths
This is an interactive applet class which takes an
image and covers it in virtual water.

The mac store told me that the new imac G5 is what I needed for using FCP5.
    I'm beginning to wonder.
When I try to play the video form the training disk, it skips, then stops. A message comes up saying it had to drop frames. I'm new at this and spent hours already with the help articles, trying to adjust settings, etc.
Wondering why this new imac needs adjusting to play video.
This is just the training video that comes with the book on a DVD and on a new imac with no other programs!
    Any ideas???
Running on imac G5, 512 MB RAM.

    Thank you.
Yes, it's on the hard drive.
The mac "specialist" who sold me this computer never mentioned needing an external hard drive, said this is all I need! I was ready to get the power mac and wish i hadn't listened to the "specialist".
So, I need an external hard drive for this program?
I've got 148 GB available on my internal hard drive.
What size then external do I need?

I have compilied all my source code with jdk1.3.1_01 and ias6.0 sp3 uses jdk1.2.2 or 2.0VM....is this difference going to affect my application?

    Hi,
It depends upon how your application is coded. If you use some of
the functionalities which JDK 1.2 uses and incase JDK 1.3 doesn't likes
that, you are likely to get errors. Infact, iAS encourages you to use
the JVM which is bundled along with iAS SP3 and using JDK apart from
that troubles. Please refer to my previous posting on iAS SP3 & JDK 1.3,
I've tested them, which threw lots of errors. Hope this helps.
