AppleTV jacked again

Every time they update their software everything stops working, do they have anyone there actually testing these updates?
Here is my newest problem:
I have a windows vista PC running as a media server all my files are stored on network storage linksys NAS-200 i have a linksys WRT400n Wireless Router and two apple TVs
everything worked fine until apple in it divine wisdom decided to fix what was not broken (again)
now half way though watching a movie (purchased from apple) iTunes decides to stop syncing and i have to go to the other end of the house close down i tunes restart wait till every thing syncs again then go wait another 5-10 minutes for the image to appear so i can select it (otherwise ill get a message saying unsupported movie type) before i can continue watching the movie.
seems now after there latest down grade update iTune does not like to sync to more than one ATV at a time (*? is iTunes getting old or somthing and cant handle the workload)
please if somebody could tell me how to fix this i will be forever grateful since i made the dumb choice of using Apple for media serving I am stuck with 300+ movies and 1500+ sound converted to iTunes format

Welcome to the  Discussion Forum.
If you turn off the tv by unplugging it, you won't need to fully reconfigure it again, it will take few moments to restart and you might need to set your output resolution again for example.
On a conservation note, I don't believe the tv is particularly inefficient in comparison to other devices, rather you notice the heat more. Other devices will use fans to dissipate the heat they create, the tv uses its casing as a heat sink to avoid fan noise. Also the tv has its transformer built in, another heat source which on most other devices of this size is usually a separate unit. If you are concerned about the environment you need to compare the power requirement for the unit which is 48w and ignore the heat produced which is misleading.

  • Headphone jack again?

Basically I had a 5th generation iPod for about a year and half, but after 6 months something strange kept happening to my headphones, where the left ear would start to stop playing music, before eventually my right side would follow though quite a while afterwards. Eventually I got told my headphone jack had gone and because of the model it was one that couldn't be smashed open and repaired. Anyway I bought a second hand 4th generation, that played music fine, but within a month of having it I've already gone through 3 pairs of headphones because my left side stops playing music again.
I can understand it happening once, but with two different iPods from different generations? If anyone knows why it might keep happening please tell me because I really can't afford to keep replacing headphones and iPods.

I had the exact same problem and ran out of patience, so I just fixed it myself. I used the tutorial on mercx's website (I don't remember the name, but type in mercx on google and look for it) to the letter except that instead of soldering down the joint and possibly causing major problems, I just folded a small strip of paper and stuck it between the metal plate and the jack part. I did that about half a year ago, and I still haven't had any problems. just remember not to use too much paper, or it'll get the player messed up.

  • Can't see my appleTV (new model) in Itunes

    Hey Guys,
Case: My AppleTV(2) is working on the wireless network, and I can watch trailors, and log in to my Itunes account, but I cant see it in Itunes. Both the ATV2 and my computer is set up to share via my account.
Facts: Itunes is newest version (10.1.2.17), and so is the ATV2 sw.
I am running Itunes on a PC.
I live in Denmark, and apple hotline can't help me, since the ATV2 is not sold officially in Denmark.
    Any good advice?
    Thanks in advance
    Rasmus

"setting to share" and home sharing are not the same thing.
have you specifically turned on "home sharing" in itunes? it would require you to enter appleid and password.
have you specifically turned on "home sharing" on the appletv? again, it would require you to enter appleid and password.
if you have done both, and after a reboot of both devices, it still doesn't work you must have a firewall issue that is blocking incoming connections.

  • Jack cannot start in realtime

    Hi
I cant start jackd in realtime mode (with a bare kernel26). the output from Qjackctl is:
JACK is running in realtime mode, but you are not allowed to use realtime scheduling.
After applying these changes, please re-login in order for them to take effect.
You don't appear to have a sane system configuration. It is very likely that you
encounter xruns. Please apply all the above mentioned changes and start jack again!
I checked my /etc/security/limits.conf file and it seems ok:
    @audio - rtprio 80
    @audio - nice -10
    @audio - memlock 400000
Then I checked I were in the audio group, and that's the case since my user creation:
    $ groups
adm tty disk lp wheel ftp mail uucp log http games hal network video audio optical floppy storage scanner power users riri
I've already set up jack a couple of times without any problem on other distros, and I don't see what's happening (except the software not using pam?). Could someone help me ?
    Thanks,
    riri

After rebuilding my installation, I got jack realtime working. But then, after installing more applications on top of the base, it stopped working. I haven't even changed kernels or anything (using kernel26-ice atm)! And then I uninstalled all audio-related apps and reinstalled jack and qjackctl and still no dice.
At this rate, I may just ditch Arch Linux and install Ubuntu Studio, which would be a shame. I only started using Arch for a few days and I really love how it works.
I love Arch but I prefer to use Ubuntu Studio for audio production anyway. It's the kind of tool you need to work 100% of the time and Ubuntu Studio delivers.
Except where it doesn't. Ubuntu Studio is what I'd recommend for a music-only machine. I use my laptop for other things besides music, and Ubuntu Studio doesn't cut it in that regard.
Well, Ubuntu Studio is still an Ubuntu ... ;-)

  • IPad 3 Headset (Jack?) issues

Figured I would see what anyone else thinks.  I consider myself to be pretty darned knowledgeable about iDevices.  I have been inside iPhones, iPod touch, iPads. I can normally fix things easily. This one has me a bit worried
I bought an iPad 3 when they were released.  I bought it at Walmart for some odd reason (never again).  So when I checked out, the woman asked if I wanted to buy the protection plan.  I said no, because I always get applecare+.  She replied that it was the same as applecare, and I told her that I doubted it.  I said that if I have an issue with my ipad through applecare, I just get a new one.  She said you get the same thing here, but instead of driving 2 hours or shipping it off, you can come in here and get one. I decided to try it, and needless to say, it was not anything close.
The headphone jack on the iPad started doing something where when a set of headphones are plugged in, it would freeze up and then reboot, and get stuck on the Apple logo.  Then it started ruining headphones within 2 weeks.  No matter how many we bought, it would short them out or something.
So, I tried to take it back to WM, and they said they were not responsible, and that I needed to contact an outside source.  I did, and they had me ship it off to be repaired.  It came back, and you could tell that someone just like me had repaired. As a matter of fact, I could have done a better job
Never the less, it came back and the headset jack seemed to work.  However, it is already starting to do the same thing.  Assuming that they actually replaced it like they were supposed to, then I assume that it has to be something else.  Since it worked at first, I guess they did replace it.  I can replace the jack again, and just see, but I feel there might be another problem elsewhere.
Moral of the story, is DO NOT BUY WALMART extended service plan.  I think that the lady was not lying to me, but ended up selling me the wrong plan. After some research, it is apparent that Walmart has 2 levels.  First level is the service plan ($79), and then a replacement plan ($99 I think).
I will be fixing it this time

  • AppleTV won't stream all music

I recently set up a AppleTV for my neighbor and we are having problems getting all of the music to show up on his Apple TV.
First his set-up. PC laptop with Vista (very slow computer), iTunes 9.0.2, Apple TV 3.0, very large music library (400+ Gigs). Connect via ethernet.
When setting up iTunes and the AppleTV, we chose to stream all music. When done syncing, the AppleTV only shows about 1/2 of the total tracks. Back to the drawing board... I looked at the files and all are mp3 files and all files play in iTunes without a problem. For example, on the AppleTV there were 4 Aerosmith albums, but there are 8 in iTunes. I made sure all boxes were "checked" in front of the songs. I even converted a few songs to a different format. No luck getting them to show up on the AppleTV via syncing.
Next step, factory restore on AppleTV. Again, no luck. This time a different number of tracks stream and it was even a smaller number than before! Even some tracks there were there before the restore are now gone?
Any ideas? I'm pulling my hair out. I've had my AppleTV for a very long time. I have never had a problem such as this. I also have a large library, but primarily focused around movies from my DVDs. So, I have the same size, but vastly smaller number of total files. Is there a max cap on this thing?

Try Repopulating itunes with some of the content that doesn't show up, don't forget to sync afterwards.
If this helps you might want to rebuild his itunes library.

  • [SOLVED] How to start JACK with KDE 4? (and which JACK should I use?)

    Hi again
I'm using KDE 4, and I've just installed JACK again, and since I can't find any decent documentation on this, I'm having a bit of a problem.
Currently I have jack from [extra] installed, rather than jack2. When I try starting jack as the ArchWiki suggests, i.e. by typing "jackd -d alsa", I get the following error:
    $ jackd -d alsa
    jackd 0.120.1

the playback device "hw:0" is already in use. Please stop the application using it and run JACK again
    cannot load driver module alsa
I've also tried jack2 from [community], and after starting it with "jack_control start", I get this...
    $ jack_control start
    --- start
DBus exception: org.jackaudio.Error.Generic: Failed to start server
So how do I start it? I'm guessing jack doesn't want to start because some other KDE application grabbed alsa before jackd (but I've been wrong before), and I don't have the slightest idea what jack2 is about with that "generic" error. If anyone would help me shed some light on this, I'd appreciate it a lot.
    Thanks in advance!

    @schivmeister thanks that one worked
Yes, it was knotify4. So now this part works. I've switched to jack2 and it works flawlessly when starting it with jackd
So this part is solved... now, would you be so kind (if you know) as to point me to some tutorials or howtos (or proper documentation, cos I can't find much of that either) on how to connect various ALSA channels with JACK?
Basically, I want to route my PCM channel and the Mic channel into Capture 1 (or one to Capture 1 and other to Capture 2), since my Intel HDA audio card doesn't have the "Mix" or "What-U-Hear" or whatever as an available capture source. Any leads on that? (or do I have to open another thread for it?)
    TIA

Nothing is running in background, just plain KDE. Also I've tried to shut down KMix - nothing changed.
    Any ideas?

KDE's phonon  is capturing the device.  The KDE sound system uses either gstreamer (default) or xine (IMHO vastly supperior) as a back end to talk to the sound hardware.
I suggest installing the xine-phonon back end and confiugure it using the systemsettings tool and using the multimedia control  backend tab to set it to be the preferred device
Then use the Device Preference tab to select the Jack Audio Connection Kit as the preferred device in each category (As a shortcut, you can use the "Apply Device List To..." button.)
There is no need to explicitly start Jack.  I think that when phonon starts, the xine backend starts Jack for you.
If you choose to use gstreamer, you need to set your device preferences to Default.  I have had poor success with this route.
I have some software (VirtualBox) that work best through pulseaudio.  It is possible to run pulseaudio as a jack source.  http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pul … rough_JACK is a pretty good article on this.

  • Does Drobo Play Well With AppleTV?

My media collection is filling up my Mac Mini and I am starting to look for an external drive the can play my movies smoothly on my AppleTV.
I have been considering the "Drobo" because of the ease of use, self back-ups, easy to add more space when needed and heals itself in case of hard drive failure, plus having Firewire 800.
However I have read that it has a noisy fan, slow and gets hot.
Noise - Should not be an issue for me since I will be streaming the media to another room.
Slow - My understanding is that it does slow down and chops up your video if it decides to do some backing up while you are using it, but I only use this Mac Mini as a media server, so hopefully it does not decide to do its thing while I am using it to listen and watch my media.
Hot - Not sure about this one, I normally leave my Mac Mini On 24-7, an would like to do the same with the Drobo. Not sure if the Drobo goes to sleep along with it's fan or does this Drobo need to be turned off.
Let me know what you guys use for external drive and if you leave your external drive on 24-7.
Would love to here from Drobo users and if your happy on how it works with Apple TV 2.

I've got a Drobo with 8TB of drives giving about 5TB of storage with built-in backup/redundancy.
Funnily enough I've never used it for AppleTV, and it's actually been disconnected for a few months after I moved my Mac Pro. I mainly use it for photo/home video archival and for storing clones of working OS installations.
The fan on the 4 bay Drobo unit can also be somewhat noisy. While it's a nice solution, I do not trust it alone for backup, and as it's not currently connected I'm using other external drives for that.
While it has Firewire, it's not exactly blazing fast for either read or write but that's not important for AppleTV anyway.
Personally I have always tended to use external drives for iTunes media storage - so long as I back these up I regard them as expendable. My current strategy for iTunes media backup is to use Home Sharing to copy material between a cheap 2TB USB WD Elements drive connected to my Mac Mini and a 2TB drive in my Mac Pro.
I have used lots of WD and Seagate drives over the years but the last Seagate I bought put me off big time due to noise/clanking/clicking and general sounds of impending failure echoed by many on the web - this was a 1.5TB external I just don't trust and don't use, they may have improved again now.
The more expensive WDs these days often have annoying extra 'CD partitions' implemented by firmware, the cheaper 'Elements' series don't, they're no slouches either.
With 1TB portable external drives available, I think these are also an option for external storage and in fact I was happily using a 500GB portable external on the Mini until it started to fill up.
I think the main thing is to ensure you have backups for purchases, or things you don't want the hassle of ripping (CDs etc) and/or converting for AppleTV use again (time vs cost perspective).
Secondly you need to establish the size you currently need and for at least a year or so for new additions.
If you want built-in redundancy also consider the WD Studio series which come in 2TB and 4TB RAID configurations allowing 1TB or 2TB of automatic backup, they also offer USB and FW.
There will be many other options out there.

  • How can I put content on the AppleTV and have it STAY there??

I want to put movies on the AppleTV and delete them from my computer. I want the movies to be persistently on the AppleTV How do I do that?

Most important thing to realise is that AppleTV cannot be regarded as a storage or backup device - once content is on AppleTv you cannot get it back to your computer.
Assuming you have a backup copy of a movie elsewhere in case your AppleTV fails or needs a factory restore you could either:
    - Show the files location using a right click on it in iTunes and delete it from the laptop drive directly but not delete the entry from iTunes. (Not ideal but apparently works)
    - Keep larger files on an external drive and change iTunes Preferences not to import to the main library - when the drive is connected you will be able to add new entries to iTunes and synce them. When disconnected iTunes won't delete them from AppleTV as again there's still an entry in the library, just that the file isn't available.
These are workarounds - it's a shame you can't just drag and drop media to AppleTV manually rather than having to sync things.

  • Can I wirelessly stream non-iTunes Store contents from iTunes to my HDTV via AppleTV?

All contents are converted to be iTunes friendly (m4v). They also play properly on my iPhone 4 and iPad. How can I watch these videos on my HDTV wirelessely, will it work on AppleTV? Again, all videos were downloaded and converted to m4v and were not purchased from the iTunes Store.

Anything that is in the correct format and in the iTunes library can be streamed to an Apple TV

  • No sound troubleshooting

I have a problem with my Arch install having no sound since my last reboot.
I am mainly running KDE and KDE apps, so it *might* be phonon-related, but I'm not conviced that's the issue. In the past, I used to have 7 or 8 soundcards in the KDE settings module for Phonon, and specifically I had hw(0,0), hw(0,1) and hw(1,3). But these no longer shows up. Though, in the past I also had pulseaudio installed. (Which after my reboot caused all sort of errors, so I removed it.) In the really distant past, I didn't have pulseaudio installed and to the best of my memory, hw(0,0), hw(0,1) and hw(1,3) didn't show up in the settings module either.
I have already tried google for all error messages I have got from mpg123, mplayer, xine and aplay, and tried to follow diagnostics and troubleshootings I have found in arch bbs and arch wiki. Of course, I could have overlooked something, so please be kind with me and assume I have forgot to do all the basics... :-(
I have speakers connected to both SPEAKER (green 3.5 mm jack) and LINE OUT (black 3.5 mm jack) in the back panel. I have no speakers attached to my green 3.5 mm speaker jack on the front panel. My user is added to the audio group, and I have also tried to run all music applications as root.
My main theory is that something is blocking the sound card, so ALSA can't use it. But I can't figure out what.
Here is most of what I believe could be of use:

aplay: main:654: audio open error: Device or resource busy
    aplay -D plughw:0,1 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav:
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
    aplay -D plughw:1,3 /usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav:
Playing WAVE '/usr/share/sounds/alsa/Front_Center.wav' : Signed 16 bit Little Endian, Rate 48000 Hz, Mono
Note: Nothing ever played in any speakers, despite the fact that aplay claimed so.
So I thought, maybe sound levels was set to 0 on plughw0,1. So I ran
    alsamixer -D plughw:0,1
    but it only gave me

Could it possibly be something with ALSA?
    ALSA in the Wiki
I always have problems with Sound at first and have to go in and unmute everything and set ALSA to start at system start.  I was able to fix it from the Wiki guide.
Apologies if you're already past this step.

  • Issue with ALSA softvol and reloading sound card module

I'm using a Chaintech AV710 card with the snd_ice1724 module as a driver. The core issue is that sometimes when this module is loaded during startup (or every time after a suspend), it will play nothing but very loud static. To fix this, I simply reload the module. This fix worked fine for me while I used pulseaudio: I would just kill pulse, reload the module, and start pulse after every suspend. Now, however, I'm using a system that involves an ALSA softvol plugin. The softvol device is being used by JACK: jackd -d alsa -d softvol. When I reload the module using this setup, the softvol control I set up becomes locked at 100%. amixer reports "Invalid command!" for sset Master2 10%. The audio will still play, but I can't figure out any way to reset it to make this control work again short of renaming the control, restarting jack, renaming the control back to the original name, then restarting jack again. Any help alleviating this issue on any of these fronts would be appreciated. Relevant asound.conf sections:

Yes, of course, alsa-utils is installed (so is alsa-firmware, and alsa-oss). I'm in audio group.

Also, you should have a directory /proc/asound/card0/  Which should have one or more files with names of the form codec#n, where n is a sequential integer starting with 0.  If those files are not hellaciously long, post them here (With code tags).  Otherwise, could you pastebin them and provide a link?

  • HP Pavilion Slimline Windows 7 64-bit: "No speakers or headphones are plugged in" error message

I have an HP pavilion slimline, model s5120y, with Windows 7 (64-bit).
I just got my power supply replaced and when I brought it home and plugged everything in, I couldn't get any sound. It told me no audio devices were plugged in, but my monitor with speakers was plugged into the audio jack in the back, the green one (it's an onboard sound card and NOT HDMI). I also tried my headphones and same thing, so I know it's not the monitor.
So then I tried the jack in the front and it worked, although the sound was really low, even with the volume turned all the way up. But, then like an hour later it went off again giving me the same message that no devices are plugged in. I tried the back jack again and then it worked again for a short amount of time. It keeps going in and out and switching to whether the back or front jacks will work, or nothing at all telling me nothing is plugged in.
Another thing is that my web cam has a mic, which is plugged in using USB, and the mic on the cam seems to record fine, and I assume it needs the sound card to do that. So, i'm guessing this is some sort of software problem because if the sound card was **bleep**ed up then the mic wouldn't be able to record, right? Well, the program I was using was showing that it was recording and the levels went up as I talked louder, so I assume it was picking everything up properly.
The audio worked fine before I brought it in for repair but I can't figure out what could have happened to break it when all he did was plug in a new power supply.
I went to the device manager and it says everything is working properly and all drivers are up to date. I also uninstalled then re-installed, disabled then re-enabled. I even went to the manufacturer's page and installed the original driver for RealTek. I also went into BIOS to make sure onboard audio was enabled. Every troubleshooting option I have on my computer says everything is working fine, but that there are no speakers plugged in even when they are.
Also I should mention, when the sound does come back on, it's pretty low and sometimes muffled, and sometimes the monitor speakers will make a dim clicking kind of sound, but not all the time. One person told me it was a known issue with the latest windows update, but I haven't done an update since I got the computer back and I couldn't find any info on that anywhere on the internet.
Thanks to anyone who has any suggestions!

Hi Srizzle, I have done some research for you and I have found a updated driver that is designed to resolve the issue of No sound from head phones or from external speakers. Please click on the link to get to the driver down load page.
