Appleworks 6.2.9 Spreadsheet Sorting

I am running Appleworks 6.2.9 on my PPC G4 Laptop. I have a one column list of data of approx 12,000 entries. Each one is not unique, rather they're duplicates in assorted quantities.
Is there a sort function where the program can eliminate duplicates so my final list is only one of each entry, but with some sort of column with a frequency count that lists how many times each entry appeared?

Hello
In case, here's another possibility using Perl, which is  wrapped in AppleScript for convenience.
Recipe.
1) Make the input text file in UTF-8 by copying the column in AW6 SS document and pasting it into plain text document in TextEdit.app.
You may copy and append all data into one plain text document. Save it with name "in.txt" on desktop. Please make sure you set the text encoding for saving file to UTF-8 in TextEdit's preference.
2) Copy the AppleScript code listed below into new document of Script Editor.app and run it.
It will create a plain text file in UTF-8 named "out.txt" on desktop which contains lines with two fields separated by tab, i.e., each line = data entry, tab and its frequency; sorted by frequency in descending order (and sorted by entry in ascending order for those with the same frequency).
--applescript
set infile to (path to desktop)'s POSIX path & "in.txt"
set outfile to (path to desktop)'s POSIX path & "out.txt"
set sh to "
in=" & infile's quoted form & "
out=" & outfile's quoted form & "
perl -CSD -l015 -015 <<'EOF' - \"$in\" > \"$out\"
my %hash = ();
while (<>) {
    chomp;
    $hash{$_} += 1;
local $, = qq(\\t);
for (sort { $hash{$b} <=> $hash{$a} || $a cmp $b } keys %hash) {
    print $_, $hash{$_};
EOF
do shell script sh
--end of applescript
Notes.
• Input text file is assumed to use CR (U+000D: CARRIAGE RETURN) as line terminator. If you copy the data from AW6 and paste it to TextEdit, this will be the case.
• Output text file uses CR as line terminator.
• If you want the result sorted by frequency in ascending order, change the following part:
for (sort { $hash{$b} <=> $hash{$a} || $a cmp $b } keys %hash) {
to:
for (sort { $hash{$a} <=> $hash{$b} || $a cmp $b } keys %hash) {
Kind regards,
H

  • Can't open a file exported from Quicken, in Appleworks 6.2.9 Spreadsheet:

    n Quicken,
    File Export gives 2 format choices - Plain Text; MS Excel.
    choosing MS Excel results in file with .slk extension.
    To open from desktop, Finder has no recommended applications.
    from Choose Application, Appleworks 6 is not allowed.
    TextEdit is allowed; produces a text file.
    In Appleworks,
    File Open, for SS type and All Available file formats, produces a listing
    (like text file, not a SS); uses Textedit for some reason.
    Open, for SS type and Excel Win 5 format, shows the .slk file available,
    choosing Open causes Appleworks to quit; Try Again doesn't help.
    Somehow, changed extension to .xls Appleworks still quits;
    now what?? I could do this with an old version of Quicken and Clarisworks

    Welcome to Apple Discussions jimeast
    I don't have the option of exporting as other than a Quicken file type in Quicken 2005 that I can see. I'd suggest exporting as a plain text file. That should maintain the tabs between fields. You can then open it as a spreadsheet through the AppleWorks Open dialog or drag & drop the text file icon on a new, blank spreadsheet.

  • Appleworks Opens Documents as Spreadsheets

    I did a quick search of the forum and didn't find anything on this... I hope somebody has a quick solution, because I'm going to bust a big deadline if I can't figure it out.
    Appleworks is suddenly opening document files as spreadsheets.
    Background: I receive PC Word docs via email, open them in Appleworks (version 6.2.9) and save them as text documents. Everything has gone smoothly until yesterday when Appleworks decided to open all the text files as spreadsheet files.
    The documents all have .doc extentions and "get info" reveals they are all "com.apple.appleworks.word" files.
    Does anybody know how to get Appleworks to recognize them as documents once again?
    Thanks,
    Marc

    Because a .txt file is not an AppleWorks file, but a "foreign" file format that AppleWorks can open, it opens it as untitled or converted in order to preserve the original & not let you accidentally overwrite it.
    As for extensions, AppleWorks 6 is an OS 8/9 application released about 6 months before the public beta of OS X. It was carbonized to run in OS X sometime in 2001. Although it runs in OS X, it has never been coded to take advantage of the conventions of OS X. Since it was written when Macs didn't use extensions, this is one thing that doesn't work as we would expect in OS X. AppleWorks & ClarisWorks before it have always used the .cwk extension on the Windows version (of course), but it wasn't until AppleWorks 6 that the Mac version even seemed to acknowledge extensions exist. Setting the Finder preference to show or not show extensions doesn't seem to affect AppleWorks documents. Even though I have my Finder preferences set to always show extensions, my AppleWorks documents don't get the extension added because I have AppleWorks set to not add it. I have AppleWorks set that way because if I were to save an AppleWorks file as Word or Excel or text, AppleWorks won't let me change the extension in the Save dialog.
    Again, because AppleWorks 6 was written before OS X & extensions on the Mac, it doesn't know to add them to translated files, you must do it manually.

  • Pages equivalent for AppleWorks "Fill Down" in spreadsheets

    Hi there,
    In the past I've been using an AppleWorks spreadsheet to keep track of my banking. I have a balance column that uses the "Fill Down" function from the "Calculate" menu in AppleWorks. I can't seem to find similar functionality in Pages tables. Anyone out there know how to do this in Pages?
    Thanks!
    Meredith
    iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.10)   using Pages 2.0.2

    It is unreasonable to expect Pages to do everything AppleWorks does. Pages is only a word processing & page layout application &, along with Keynote for presentations, an application in iWork. It is not a spreadsheet or a database. It doesn't really have draw features to the extent AppleWorks does nor does it have any paint functions. If/when iWork gets applications for those functions, my expectation is that they won't be in Pages, but separate applications, just as Keynote is a separate application.

  • Appleworks 6.2.9 spreadsheet - limit columns

    I'm starting to save DB files as ASCII files and reopening as SS. Now I know in the past I have been able to limit the columns of the SS to 5 or 10 or whatever but can't seem to find how to do that any more, or is that one of those things that no longer works in OS 10.6. I think I'll be moving all to MarinerCalc the next time a good sale comes out.
    Thanks for all imput.
    Judy

    Thanks Niel
    Now that option is available. Last night all I got on Format-Document was number of pages, not columns. The difference being, I think, that when I opened the ASCII file, I hadn't yet saved it as AW SS file. When I open them this morning, I can change the column number. Thanks.

  • Appleworks 6 wont open in Mavericks

    Appleworks 6 Data Base (Business Cards) will not open using Mavericks. Nor will other AW 6 files open.  Apple sent me an Iworks 9 disk, but that doenot work either.

    AppleWorks 6 won't work on any OS later than Snow Leopard. You can open AppleWorks 6 word processing, spreadsheets & presentations in Pages 4, Numbers 2 & Keynote 5 or earlier respectively. The more recent versions cannot open any AppleWorks files. You cannot open any other type (draw, paint or database) of AppleWorks 6 documents with any iWork application nor can you open AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks documents. LibreOffice v4.3.1. It can open many, but not all, types of AppleWorks & ClarisWorks documents but not database.
    You will need access to a Mac that can run AppleWorks to open the database & can be copied & pasted into an AppleWorks spreadsheet, saved & opened in Numbers or saved as ASCII/plain text & opened in most any spreadsheet, database or word processing program. Since it is a business card database you may be better off printing it to a PDF.

  • How do i email apple works 6.2.9 spreadsheets, how do i email apple works 6.2.9 spreadsheets

    How do i email appleworks 6.2.9 spreadsheets in a PDF tupw format without getting a jumble of text?

    If you have the iWork application Numbers you can open and use AW 6.2.9 spread sheets and save in this format. Or you can export the ss opened in Numbers as PDF, Excel, or CSV. I don't know about Excel or CSV but the PDF is a fixed picture and will not allow functions.
    I have just tested a newly created AW 6.2.9 SS doc with my G4 PowerBook (OS X 10.5.8). I opened and saved the new AW 6.2.9 SS in iWork 09 Numbers native format then emailed this to myself. I opened the email with my MacBook Pro (MId 2010 OS X 10.7.4,) and saved the SS Doc to the desktop. It opened with a double click in  iWork 09 Numbers and was fully functional.
    What I have done with my Claris Works and Apple Works ss docs is convert all to numbers which maintains the ability to alter and copy the data. Getting the Claris Works docs converted required an older version of Apple works that will read them and allow the saves to be read by v6.2.9.

  • Appleworks compatability

    Hi. When I looked into buying a mac I did a fair bit of research on compatability with windows (word, excel, powerpoint) because my office machine uses these. I was led to understand that Appleworks could open ms files and I could edit them etc. and then save them, for example, with a .doc suffix, email back to my office pc and carry on working on it.
    This did work for a couple of weeks after getting the mac, but no longer works at all. If I can open ms files now, it is nearly always garbled nonsense. Where does the problem lie? I think my work pc uses windows xp and related software.
    Thanks anyone.

  • Appleworks 6.2.9 crashes upon using keyboard

    Yes, I am an Appleworks user, 6.2.9, thousands of documents, WP, SS, DB on local computer and external drive. Today, whenever I went to edit something prepared even yesterday, when I use any key on the keyboard, the program will crash and the document will disappear. If I open a new page for word processing, the first stroke on the keyboard results in Appleworks closing down. I receive the little card to report this incident and can choose reopen. I do, I strike a key, program shuts down. Of course, I am on a deadline and don't have time for this hiccup.  I have restarted the computer multiple times with no change in the behavior.
    This does not happen in Mail or Text Edit, nor does it happen in Appleworks Data Base or Spreadsheet. I have cleaned out all Recent Items and emptied the Trash. I used Tech Tool and Disk Utility. All registered as OK. I am afraid to use Software Restore as I have many versions of Appleworks (Clarisworks) documents. This present problem is on iMac with System 10.4.11.
    I am heartened by the July dates in this discussion and hope there is another "old-timer" who can solve my problem soon. Isn't there an old Appleworks person on the Apple payroll who might have suggestions? I will be very grateful for any help. Thanks in advance, Muriel

    Thank you, thank you, thank you. No understanding of why this bug exists or happens but you indeed had the correct solution.
    It's not a bug. When AppleWorks was written ALL Mac applications used Mac Roman coding for input as that was the only standard coding used on Mac computers. By the time Unicode was adopted, development on AppleWorks had pretty much ended. New applications, and those whose development was still active, adopted Unicode as the prime input coding, those near the end of their cycle kept Mac Roman. Apple continued to offer the user the ability to choose a keyboard layout supporting Mac Roman encoding for those applications requiring it.
    In terms of being a 'bug', an appropriate analogy might be the inability to plug that old kerosene lamp into the wall socket in your home. Old technology, new input method. Not a bug.

  • Opening all Appleworks documents in Pages

    I have LOTS of Applework documents in my system, and actually because of a reinstall I don't even have Appleworks on my new iMac right now. I've made the switch to Pages and really like this program (as well as Numbers). Can I have the computer switch all Applework documents in all locations to Pages with one command, or do I have do this individually file per file. Also, is it a hazard to change all the Appleworks documents at one stroke without looking at each one individually in the face of possibly loosing data to changed fonts or formats, etc. Any comments on this would be helpful. Thanks. ummmmm....I'm thinking already a one sweep change would be problematic because some Applework docuents are actually spreadsheets, even though in Appleworks all spreadsheets and word documents have the same Appleoworks icon.... okay any feedback to my rambling?

    Hello
    Here is the script:
    Save the script as Application or Application bundle on the desktop.
    Drag and drop an AppleWorks file's icon on the script's icon.
    You will get a dialog describing what it is.

    set finfos to info for leFichier

    set vernum to (ASCII number of (read leFichier for 1)) (* read the first byte of the file *)
    if creType is not "BOBO" then
    display dialog (leFichier as text) & return & return & "isn't an AW document"
    else if fType is "CWDB" then

  • Opening appleworks word processing docs

    So I am in the process of converting my 40,000 appleworks documents so they will open in Pages. I am converting all the word processing docs to appleworks 6.2.9. My question is: Is this enough? Will these documents now be safe or is there another step I have to take? I have converted my data bases to fileworks and just want to be sure that, down the road, I won't have a problem once all the AW WP docs are saved as AW6. I've been doing about 100 at a time. I open them all in AW6 and then quit AW and save them as AW6 docs and (I just hold down the return key) trash the AW pre-6 and Clarisworks docs after saving them as AW6 docs. Now they open in Pages. I'm just worried that the next system upgrade might screw me up again. I've been avoiding upgrading from 10.6.8 until I'm sure I won't lose these docs.

    You can open AppleWorks 6 word processing, spreadsheets & presentations in Pages, Numbers & Keynote respectively. You cannot open any other type (draw, paint or database) of AppleWorks 6 documents with any iWork application nor can you open AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks documents.
    There is no special importing needed. There are several methods you can use, common to most Mac applications. Use the Open dialog, Control- or right-click & choose the desired application from Open With in the contextual menu or drag the icon of the file onto the desired application icon in the Finder or the Dock.
    If you want to (semi-) permanently change the application to open the files, you can do it in Get Info. I'm not sure how successful this would be with AppleWorks documents, though, since OS X does not differentiate between the various AppleWorks document types & there are three different applications you would use.

  • How can I sort a sequence files into two new folders in Automator?

    I have a folder with 2000 files. I need to sort these files into two folders. I have sequentially renamed the files in automator so that a number is the first character of each file. I need to put the odd numbered files in folder one and the even numbered ones in folder two.
    I can do this sort in a spreadsheet. How do I get the resuls of the spreadsheet sort back into automator?
    Or is there a better way to do this within Automator?
    G4 17 PB   Mac OS X (10.4.2)

    Open the Script Editor in the /Applications/AppleScript/ folder and enter the following:
    tell application "Finder"
    set source_folder to folder "folder:with:2000:items"
    set folder_1 to folder "folder 1"
    set folder_2 to folder "folder 2"
    repeat with this_item in (get items of source_folder)
    if (item 1 of (get name of this_item)) mod 2 is 1 then --odd number
    move this_item to folder_1
    else
    move this_item to folder_2
    end if
    end repeat
    end tell
    Insert the paths to the actual folders in lines 2, 3, and 4.

  • IMPORT APPLEWORKS DOCUMENTS INTO PAGES

    With appleworks totally dead (just found out with my lion update), I'm a teacher with 1000's of old AW files I might want to access, update or import into pages....  Is there a way?
    I've got a 2009 iMac running lion, iworks 08 (rarely use), ipad 2.
    Thanks

    You won't need to run AppleWorks in an earlier OS IF, big IF, your AppleWorks files are AppleWorks 6 word processing, spreadsheet or presentation. The iWork applications - Keynote, Pages & Numbers - can only open AppleWorks 6 presentation, word processing & spreadsheet documents, respectively. They will not open any other type of AppleWorks 6 files or any AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks files.
    The third-party application, EazyDraw, can open AppleWorks draw documents. If you still have access to AppleWorks you can copy the contents of draw documents, paste them into an AppleWorks word processing document in object mode (click the arrow in the tool panel), save the WP document & then open it in Pages. You can copy & paste from AppleWorks to Pages but you would have to do it object by object or it will be one big uneditable object. Check Yvan Koenig's iDisk for many AppleScripts he has written to make conversion easier. Most are made to do batch conversions.
    There is nothing other than AppleWorks that can open paint or database documents. Database data can be copied & pasted into an AppleWorks spreadsheet, saved & opened in Numbers or saved as ASCII/plain text & opened in most any spreadsheet, database or word processing program. Paint documents can be saved as one of many different formats to be opened in most image editing programs. I recommend using PICT or PNG for best results.

  • Appleworks + iWork 06

    I've been using Appleworks (latest version 6.2.9) and just acquired iWork 06 compatible with my 10.4.6.
    Anyway, I'd like to keep Appleworks because of the spreadsheet, drawing and painting capabilities.
    If I install iWork 06, can those two applications co-exist?
    And, I should probably first trash the iWork 05 trial version that came with my iMac?
    Thanks for any input.

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Marian
    how do i bridge the gap so i can access appleworks 5 docs -- can i buy appleworks 6.x, convert the docs from appleworks 5 to 6, then convert from appleworks 6 to iworks 08?
    That would be the best option if you want to be able to access database, draw & paint documents. For word processing & spreadsheets you could Save As… Word or Excel which could be opened with Pages or Numbers. Be sure you add the .doc or .xls file extensions to the file names. Pages & Numbers won't recognize the files otherwise.
    There is no upgrade path to AppleWorks 6 from any prior version of AppleWorks or ClarisWorks, it must be purchased. You could try eBay and do a search for "AppleWorks" or "Apple Works" (some people put a "space" in the name). Hardcore Mac sells AppleWorks 6.2.4. And, last but not least, you could buy a new retail box of AppleWorks from the Apple Store by calling the number at the bottom of this page & asking for the legacy software list.
    Since you're using iWork '08, you must be using at least OS X 10.4.10, so I suggest you change the operating specs that appear at the bottom of your posts. Click "My Settings" in the right-hand panel (->), choose the version from the pop-down list & then click Save at the bottom of the page. This will help anyone trying to provide an answer that is OS-specific.

  • Problem opening Appleworks

    I'm using an iMac, running OS 10.5.8. I recently got rid of a very old Mac computer that had Clarisworks on it. I now can't open all the .cwk files that were on that machine. I read online that Appleworks should be able to open them. However, when I try to open Appleworks 6 on my iMac, it looks like it's trying to open, but then doesn't. I don't get an error message or anything... it just doesn't open.
    So... I have two problems. Basically I want to open and resave the .cwk files. And it looks like I need Appleworks to do that. But I can't seem to open it. Any ideas? Thanks.
    Julie

    What version of AppleWorks 6 are you trying to open in OS X? You need at least 6.2 as before that AppleWorks is a Classic application.
    AppleWorks IS ClarisWorks & the extension remains .cwk. AppleWorks is the name Apple gave ClarisWorks 5 when it took it back "in-house" at version 5.0.3 around 1998. AppleWorks 6 will open ClarisWorks 5 & earlier files except that the last version, AppleWorks 6.2.9, may not be able to open all ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. Any other version of AppleWorks 6 will open them. Pages & Numbers open AppleWorks 6 word processing & spreadsheets, respectively. Word for Mac can usually open AppleWorks 5 & 6 word processing. Some users can open AppleWorks spreadsheets with Excel, I can't. Keynote can open AppleWorks 6 presentations. The third-party application, EazyDraw, can open AppleWorks draw documents. For any other file type, the only application that can open them is AppleWorks.
    Your problem with updating may be that you haven't downloaded the correct updater for your installation of AppleWorks 6. The error message means it can't find a copy of AppleWorks for that updater to update. The most common reasons are:
    1. The language of the updater doesn't match the language of the installed version of AppleWorks 6. This particularly applies to the two English versions.
    2. The application has been moved. The folder containing AppleWorks 6 must be named AppleWorks 6 AND be in the first level of the Applications folder.
    Since AppleWorks was designated "end-of-life" it is difficult to find the updaters (especially the US/North American) on Apple's site. Here is the page of links I have for the 6.2.9 updater. The first has a link to the North American updater in the upper right & links to other languages further down.
    As for troubleshooting your installation of AppleWorks 6 it's best to start with two maintenance tasks, one for the system (Repair Permissions) and one for AppleWorks (delete preferences). (Thanks to Barry for this way to format this very common answer.)
    To Repair permissions, launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in your Applications folder, click on Repair Permissions.
    To delete AppleWorks’ preference files, go to HD > Users > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks in this Preferences folder, then delete all of the enclosed files (with the exception of the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bars). AppleWorks will recreate the preference files as it needs them.
