Appleworks not opening

hello. i'll try to make up for my only other (rather hasty) post...hopefully this will be coherent enough to elicit a solution!
here's a general timeline of my problem– hopefully someone can see a flaw or step i've missed:
i've used appleworks for as long as i've owned a mac. i even cut my WP teeth on a later version of clarisworks before appleworks came out.
at the moment i'm using appleworks 6 education version (updated recently to 6.2.9). approx. 6 mos. ago, i began having problems w/the application unexpectedly quitting when i tried to search in clippings. that was remedied when i reinstalled appleworks completely.
most recently (this week) it's been the problem of simply not opening, giving me an error stript. i thought the app was due for an update, and moved it up to 6.2.9. shortly after that, i was able to open documents (for only 2days).
i've spent a day or so (maybe not extensive enough) searching the forum for this problem. i found first Dale Gillard's tutorial "appleworks slow?…" and followed its advice to clean out recent items and such.
i do a permissions repair every so often, and did so after that just for safety's sake.
still no go.
i then gave Peggy's tutorials a try, deleting users/etc…/prefrences (appleworks folder & plist). i checked the support files, which were all as they should be, the application still in the correct folder with them.
after all that, i tried to open appleworks again, but it was so agitated by then it didn't even give me the courtesy of an error message, it simply didn't open.
this is my primary (and fav.) WP program; i don't want (REALLY don't) to settle for Word:Mac (apologies to those who use it...)
thanks!
12" Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

i can't open appleworks at all. i want to try to
delete the bauhas 93 fonts how do i do that?
Hi kelly,
Welcome to the discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
You'll have Bauhaus 93 installed only if you have installed (or run) Microsoft Office on your computer. It's an older version of that font that's corrupted, so if your machine came with Tiger (OS X 10.4.x) installed,it's unlikely you have a corrupt version of Baujaus 93.
If a corrupt font is the problem, AppleWorks will begin the startup process, and will quit with "Building font menu" showing at the bottom left of it's startuo ('splash') screen.
I suspect one of the other issues mentioned in this thread is to blame. Which one would be indicated by a detailed description of what happens when you try to start AppleWorks, and the exact situation at the point at which AW quits.
Regards,
Barry
PS: To your question of how to delete Bauhaus 93: Go to the Finder, press command-F, enter "bauhaus" (without the quotes) in the search box, click on the file in the list that appears, then (at the bottom of the Find window) double click the last folder before the font name.
In the open folder window, click and drag the Bauhaus 93 file to the Trash.

  • Appleworks not opening properly

I lost my hard drive last summer. I reinstalled all my applications and was using Panther (OS10.39). I just upgraded to Leopard. Now, if I boot up AW it does not completely load and unexpectedly Quits. I can open a document and AW will load. If I try to close that doc or open a second doc it will quit. My recent documents do not show up either. I went back and reinstalled AW 6.2 and updated to 6.2.9.
I, also, have about half of my old hard drive in zip files loaded onto the new HD. I have not opened these but they probably have a lot of my old apps there. Could these old files or something else be the problem. AW worked OK until I upgraded to Leopard

There are a few maintenance tasks to perform after an installation (including a reinstallation). AppleWorks should not be running when you carry out these tasks.
    1. Repair Permissions. Launch Disk Utility, found in the Utilities folder in Applications, select your hard
        drive, and run Repair Permissions.
    2. Delete AppleWorks's preferences files. Go to yourname > Library > Preferences.
Locate and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist
Locate and open the AppleWorks folder at this location. Delete the two cache files and the
preferences file(s) found in that folder. (AppleWorks will build new, clean, copies as it needs them.)
    3. Delete AppleWorks's Recent Items folder. You'll find it at yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items.

  • Appleworks not opening in Leopard

Actually, it opens and immediately closes. EVerything transferred fine from my G4 iBook to my new macBook, but this is one glitch I don't need!!
    Ideas?

    Hi bunspod,
Have you cleared your Recent Items folder recently?
AppleWorks keeps an alias to every file you've ever saved, and never gets around to removing them as they become less recent. As the number of items increases, AW reaches a point where it slows dramatically, even to the point of failing to launch.
Quit AppleWorks (if it is running) and, in the Finder go to yourname > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items. Open the folder and list the contents by Date Modified. Drag all but the most recent 10-20 to the Trash. (Trashing these aliases has no effect on the original files.)
There are a number of free solutions available on the 'net for the Recent items bug.
Yvan Koenig supplied a script in THIS POST to the User Tips Library. The script is included (in text) in the post. Note that this script deletes ALL items in the Recent Items folder, so may not be appropriate to your needs.
Dale Gillard did an extensive reworking of a script I produced many years ago. The result, Trash Recent Items, is available from his DMG software site.
Dale also produces an AppleWorks add on called Sidekick for AppleWorks 6. Recent Items maintenance is one of the free features available in Sidekick, a Shareware application that you can download and try before buying.
Jan Weijers's script, Keep 10, does what its name implies: keeps the 10 most recent items. The script is intended to be attached to the Recent Items folder, and continuously monitors the folder, removing older items and keeping only the most recent 10.

  • AppleWorks not opening saved files

AppleWorks (on OS 9) can still open files, but now when it saves any new document, it won't allow it to open again. When I try to open any newly saved file, it throws up a dialog box that says "Unexpected end of file." twice.
Old documents can be opened but new ones can't.
What could be the problem and how (if at all possible) can it be fixed?
I've already tries rebuilding the Desktop file and deleting AppleWorks preferences files but it doesn't seem to change. Peggy (from the AppleWorks forum) suggested posting it here as it may be more of an OS 9 specific problem.

"When I try to open any newly saved file, it throws up a dialog box that says "Unexpected end of file." twice."
An “Unexpected End of File Encountered” alert message means that either the end of file marker is damaged or missing, or the end of file data does not reach the location defined by the end of file marker in a document. Usually this results when the file is incompletely saved or the application unexpectedly quits while the file is being saved. However, this error can occur during application launch, or when saving or printing.
If, after you receive the alert message, the document size is dramatically lower than the original size, the chances of recovery are minimal. It is recommended to use a backup copy of this document.

  • Help requested-- Appleworks not opening...

Appleworks failed today-- don't know which version it is as I can't open it!-- got a "shared library error message" on trying to open it. This was after I transferred some material from my other MacBook Pro (running 10.5.8 and Appleworks 6.2.7). I have trashed and cleared the plist in the Library, restarted, but it's still on the blink.
    The exact error message is:
The application "AppleWorks" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "<AppleWorks><MW_MSL.PPC.Shlb><InterfaceLib>"
There's a lot of experience here... any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance folks.

    Hi John,
Thanks for returning and noting your successful search. That could prove helpful to others in future.

  • Appleworks bounces once, but will not open

PLEASE HELP ME! my appleworks will NOT open and i honestly have no idea how to fix it! whether i click on appleworks in the dock or from recent items, it just bounces once and then does not do anything. help would be greatly, grealty appreciated.

Hi and welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
My first step would be to go to the Finder.
Open a new Finder window, click on the Home icon with your user name under it, then Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting points > Recent Items.
Select and all or most of the items in this folder and drag them to the Trash.
Close the Finder window and try launching AppleWorks.
Should that step not solve the problem, try Michael's suggestions.

  • Applework will not open, printer error

When I try to open Appleworks, I get the following error. "AppleWorks could not be launched because of a shared library error "<Appleworks><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_PrintCores>"" This error just happened without making any adjustments to the computer. Prior to this error, the application (Safari, Appleworks, etc.) would unexpectedly quit when you tried to print. That problem also remains. I have an EPSON CX4200 that I bought with the computer.
    Any suggestions would be great.

    2. Trash the AppleWorks folder in your Home -> Library -> Preferences folder along with the com.apple.plist file. (Don't trash the Button Bar Preferences if you have customized the Button Bar.)
I suspect you have reached the system's preferences folder rather than your own. OS X maintains a set of preferences for its own use, and a set for each User account.
In the Finder (and with AppleWorks NOT running), open a new finder window (command-N), then:
•Click the Home icon with your name beside it.
•Click the Library folder in the list that apears in the next column.
•Click the Preferences folder that appears in the next column.
•Drag the AppleWorks folder in the next column to the Trash.*
•Drag the com,apple.appleworks.plist file in this column to the Trash
*See note above regarding Button Bar preferences.
    3. Use the first aid utility to repair permissions on your hard drive (it's recommended that you run this more than once.
The 'first aid utility' is called Disk Utility. You'll find it in Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility, but it's probably easier to click the blue Spotlight icon at the right end of the menu bar, then type in "disk utility" (without the quotes). Double click the icon (it will show as the Top Hit) to run the utility, then click the First Aid button in the window that opens, then Repair Permission in the next window. As noted in the User Tips post, it's recommended that Repair Permissions be run more than once (until it reports that Permissions are OK or that no permissions were repaired).

  • I have an imac osx 5 mos.old. First time today I can not open my desktop folder/files. I need to read them. Message is: appleworks 6 quit unexpectedly. I need to read them. Is it possible that new software downloaded yesterday is problem?

I have an imac osx 5 months old. For the first time today I can not open my desktop folders which are very important to me. How can I open these folders.
The message when I click on the folder is "appleworks 6 quit unexpectedly". I can not open the folder. Is it possible that new software installed could cause the problem when I get the message "new softward available for your computer, install now. Maybe I should never install upgrade. Please help in layman's language how to open my folders. Thanks.

The curious thing here is that on the one hand the code cannot be loaded so how could the trojan code be ever executed.  But you would expect the "Unexpectedly quit" message if the intel trojan did get executed in a ppc app.  So this begs the question when (and how) does the trojan code get executed in conjunction with launching an app?
I understand code injected into a specific app like safari that uses the global environment variable to access the code in /Users/Shared.  But I don't understand how that code could be executed by attempting to run an randomly chosen ppc app.  Unless of course   other code has been injected is in a more critical place than just safari and that is scary.
Some of this was explained to us a few weeks back by an infected user who reverse engineered the code, working with Intego to figure out why he was being re-directed on Google searches. At the time, nobody believed much of anything he was saying, but F-Secure explains it more fullly in this analysis. Note that there is a filter component to keep it from loading code into apps that would be unstable, so watch for the next variant to filter out ppc only apps.
In a related matter, I got word from the PC side of the house that similar techniques are being used by drive-by infections that were injecting code into a running app which would disappear when they quit the app. A one-time infection, so to speak. Makes it really hard to even know you were temporarily infected, let alone how, why, what damage, etc.

  • Appleworks 6 Files Not Opening

    Hi, can anyone help.
I recently installed Appleworks 6 on my PC, I can create files ok, however when my friends send me files which are created in Appleworks 6, I get a message saying; "file created in a newer version and can not open".

Do you have the latest/last update installed? Your version of AW should be 6.2.2. The latest/last version for Mac was 6.2.9.

  • Appleworks 6.2.7 will not open and can't boot from Systemworks CD

Received message "need to restart your computer". Now Appleworks 6.2.7 will not open and I can't boot using SystemWorks CD -- keep getting the above "need to restart your computer" message when trying to start with SW CD. I've gone through the troubleshooting steps i.e. safe boot, throw away the prefs file, and have just reinstalled Appleworks from my software restore CD. When I try to open AW I now get message "Appleworks has unexpectedly quit". What do I do now? Suggestions and advice would be appreciated.
    Lorne

Unless you absolutely have to open files created in ClarisWorks 4 or earlier or drag & drop in tables, I recommend the first thing you do is update to AppleWorks 6.2.9. AppleWorks 6.2.7 update came out around January 2003 & was the worst update ever. Fortunately, the 6.2.9 updater came out in January 2004 & fixed the issues 6.2.7 was supposed to fix and the ones it caused. You can find the links to the updater on this page where you can choose the appropriate updater for your AppleWorks 6 installation.
Then after updating, delete the AppleWorks preferences as in my user tip Barbara gave the link to.

  • Updated Appleworks will not open/ updated documents won't open

Am so frustrated! Knew my G4 was almost out of memory. Was at the Apple Store today and bought a LaCie 500GB hard drive AND a new MacBook Pro notebook. Before transferring files to the new computer, Apple told me to "save" my desktop documents on the new hard drive. Worked OK until I got to Appleworks and all my cwk files. The Appleworks icon now shows a blue label under it (huh?) and a small arrow and will not open. Hundreds of documents done on the Appleworks updated (6.2) software I can't open or transfer. Only thing that I am able to open are old documents from my original Appleworks.
Is there any way to get the Appleworks 6.2 open? and moved to the new hard drive? I'm an artist working from home... need these documents! Do I have to schlep the old computer, the new computer and the new hard drive back to the Apple store tomorrow? Help would be much appreciated! Thank you!

    Hi Lani,
Welcome to Apple Discussions and the AppleWorks forum.
I don't know what the blue label under the AppleWorks icon means. Is this the Application icon or the icon for an AppleWorks document? The small arrow, if it is curved and located at the lower left corner of the icon, means the icon is an alias to the file.
If your AppleWorks application is indeed version 6.2, you'll need to update further. AppleWorks 6.2.4 is the earliest recommended version for current Mac OS X systems (Tiger & Leopard), and the newest (and also recommended) version is 6.2.9.
The following actions should help in solving your problem.
    1. Locate the AppleWorks 6 application package. It should be at Applications > AppleWorks 6 > AppleWorks. Click on it once to select it, then press command-I to Get Info. In the Get Info window, check the Version number. If it is anything other than 6.2.4 or 6.2.9, download and apply the 6.2.9 update. (See the Caution below.) If the AppleWorks 6 folder (containing the application) is not in the Applications folder, move it to that folder. If the Appleworks application package is not in the AppleWorks 6 folder, move it to that folder.
    2. After any software installation it is necessary to do a system maintenance task—Repair Permissions. Use Spotlight to locate Disk Utility and double click the file to launch the application. In Disk Utility, click First Aid, Select your hard drive, then click Repair Permissions.
    3. Whenever Appleworks is misbehaving an early troubleshooting action is to delete AW's preferences files. This is especially true if you have moved AppleWorks from one machine to another. Look in Home (yourname) > Library > Preferences. Find and delete the file com.apple.appleworks.plist. Find and open the folder AppleWorks. Delete both prefs files and both cache files found in this folder.
    4. Click on one of the AppleWorks file icons with the arrow and blue label, then press command-I. In the Get Info window, check if this icon is a file (document) or an alias. If it is a document, you should be able to open it. Check that the Open with section of the Get Info window names AppleWorks 6 as the application to open the file. If not, use the pull down menu in this section to select AppleWorks 6, then click the Change all button to apply this instruction to all .cwk files. If the icon is an alias, you will need to redo the transfer of files from the G4 to the MBP, making sure that what you are transferring are actual files, not aliases.
Still not solved? Re post with more detail on what you do to open the files, and what response you get from the MBP.
    Regards,
    Barry

  • Appleworks .cwk files will not open....

I have several .cwk files (created in Appleworks 6.x) that for some reason will not open in Pages anymore. They worked fine a few weeks ago. I get the following message:
    IMPORT ERROR
Appleworks document "my file" is not a word processing document.
Anybody have this problem before? I haven't changed any of these files. Whenever I use them I always say "Don't Save" when I close them.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Dick

    Welcome to Apple Discussions Dick
Are you sure they are AppleWorks 6 word processing documents? Those are the only type Pages can open. Are you sure you opened these specific files in Pages before? I'd be happy to take a look at a couple & see if there is anything unusual about them that is keeping them from opening. Click my name in blue next to this post. My public e-mail address is in the biography section. Just replace (AT) with @. As I do have a regular job, it might be a day or two before I could get back to you, but I'll try to be quick.

  • Recovered 1994 appleworks files; pages will not open them

I had a few discs of old files I need to access from 1994; data recovery got them onto a CD for me.  I purchased Pages (iWork) thinking it would open them, but it comes up with "created by an unsupported version of appleworks."
Does anyone know how I can open these?  Many thanks.

The iWork applications - Keynote, Pages & Numbers - can only open AppleWorks 6 presentation, word processing & spreadsheet documents, respectively. They will not open any other type of AppleWorks 6 files or any AppleWorks 5 or any version of ClarisWorks files. 1994 files are likely ClarisWorks 4 as ClarisWorks 5 came out in 1995.
Your best option would be to get a copy of AppleWorks 6. AppleWorks 6.2.9 (the current version) can't open all ClarisWorks 4 or earlier files. It gives an I/O error. There doesn't appear to be a way to predict which files will cause problems. I've had it happen & not happen with all AppleWorks file types. These files can be opened by any other version of AppleWorks 6, so a good choice would be AppleWorks 6.2.4. AppleWorks 6.2.4 is the earliest version stable in OS X. Avoid 6.2.7 - very, very, very buggy! The last time I looked, Hardcore Mac was selling AppleWorks 6.2.4. You also can sometimes find AppleWorks 6 on eBay, but it might be difficult to be sure it's no newer than 6.2.4 and has an OS X-aware installer.
Other options would be to contact a local user group or an elementary school to see if anyone has a Mac with AppleWorks & could translate the files for you.

  • Appleworks wont open

I have an iBook G4, have had it for about a year and a half and all of the sudden Appleworks wont open, I try and a message pops up saying it unexpectedly quit even though it was never open. I removed some file from my recent files folder because some tard said it would work, but it didn't...I feel stupid...help...anyone?

    Welcome muscou.
I have a similar problem but all I get in my console
    log is
    Invalid Path
which invalid path? I grepped the whole /var/log and
I don't see any other error messages.
You'd have to put this message in context for me by providing some of the lines from you log file.
At a guess, the path might not be valid because of permissions.
I don't know which event triggered this problem to
start hapenning, it used to work fine.
I can still start it in Classic but that is rather
inconvenient. I repaired the permission and short of
reinstalling, I don't know what else to do.
Repairing permissions won't fix most problems with AppleWorks. That's because repairing permissions only works for programs that are installed using Apple's Mac OS X Installer program. AppleWorks uses a third-party installer. You're better off manually checking the permissions of the various files via the Finder's File > Get Info menu item.
It will probably be quicker in the long run to just reinstall AppleWorks. This only takes about 2-5 mins, depending on the speed of your Mac. But make sure you delete all of the preference files as well as the AppleWorks User Data folder.
Another option is to try AppleWorks from another User account. If it works fine there, then you know there's something awry in your User account. The best way to 'fix' this is to make new account (setting it to be an Administrator's account, if required) and delete your current User account.
