Application folder defaults back to icon view after restart

When I view the application folder after a restart or start up the view is the icon view. In the finder I change it to list view, and restart the system and the view will revert back to the icon view every time. I have tried repairing file permissions then changing views, and I have deleted the .DS_store file in the applications folder and changed the view. Meanwhile after a system restart the app. folder view always reverts to the icon view. This seems to be the only folder that acts this way. I would like the default view of the app folder to always be the list view. How can I accomplish this? Thanks for your help.
MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.9)

This happens because you do not have permission to modify the invisible file that stores the folder settings, and when you delete it, a new one is created that inherits the folder permissions.
Open Terminal and paste this command:
sudo chmod 666 /Applications/.DS_Store;sudo chown $USER /Applications/.DS_Store
With that done, now set the window view and it should be persistent.

Log in as root. Change the icon. Log out and log back into your "normal" account.

• After downloading the new version, it says to drag the icon into the applications folder; there's no icon!

I've been asked to update my Firefox two days in a row, and have downloaded the update, but no ICON appears for me to drag into the applications folder. Why is this?

Make sure that Firefox gets installed properly.
Open the DMG file and drag the Firefox program to the application folder on your hard drive.
You shouldn't double-click the Firefox application to run it from the disk image, but drag it out of the DMG folder instead.

• Include Applications folder in back-up

I set-up Time machine using a 1T external drive. Somehow the application folder of my boot drive did not back up, everything else did. How can I get it to back-up it does not show in the do not back-up list. I have all the original disks but would to avoid next time.

You may need to sort of re-set TM's exclusions (TM Preferences > Options).
First, exclude your /Applications folder, and quit System Preferences.
Then go back and remove the exclusion. That probably fixed it. Do a +Back Up Now.+
If it still doesn't back them up, turn TM off, de-select your drive (select "none"), note any exclusions you want, quit System Preferences.
Then delete the file: /Library/Preferences/com.apple.TimeMachine.plist
Note it's in your top-level Library folder, not your home folder.
Then go back to TM Preferences, re-select your drive, re-enter any desired exclusions, and turn TM on (and/or do a +Back Up Now).

• HD icon moves after restart

Hi, silly, but annoying problem. Recently, my HD icon moves after I restart my machine. Only icon to do this. I usually keep it in the upper right hand corner, but now it seems happier in the lower right hand corner - below a folder I have there. This is really annoying. I keep moving it back, and the stubborn fella returns below. I tried in preferences to uncheck it and then recheck it, but no go. Any thoughts? It's driving me crazy. Even more, why did it just decide to change zip codes?
Thanks all.
M

You might try Onyx or Yasu (utilities that are donation ware/freeware) and delete the ds.store files which are supposed to keep track of this. You could also delete your user finder plist(com.apple.finder.plist). If the files are corrupted then they can mess things up.
Also, as Ali says, putting them too close to the side of the screen is like telling the icon " Your master has screwed up and you are free to go where ever you want now.". Put it close to the upper right corner where you want then let the Finder accurately place it by selecting View and then Cleanup.
Occasionally, my icons like to wander. I just get used to it (or have been beaten down by it) and no longer ask why.

• Error icon shown after restarting

I have upgraded my Mac Mini from Mavericks to Yosemite, the installation ran fine and the system started up into Yosemite without issues. However after restarting my machine, a white screen with an Apple logo appears with a progress bar below it, the progress bar will go up to about 35% and then show an error icon.
How can I fix this? Unfortunately I did not make a backup of the OS nor do I use Time Machine.
What are my options? Is there a way I can read through the logs to see what is failing to possibly try and fix it?

Try actually opening message and clicking reply icon to respond rather than right clicking on message preview. I have had same bug (which Apple should fix all the same), but have found that if you open the message as its own discreet window, then the "replied to" icon will appear. Hope this is helpful

• Iphone 3gs restores fine but goes back to recovery logo after restarting

i would appreciate any help that i can get, i have an iphone 3gs locked to fido and my phone carrier is also fido, so when i restore, the sim successfully unlocks it, aldo it doesnt say phone is activated, but it still takes me to the home screen and the phone and everything works fine; i can make calls, receive calls, sync with itunes and everything works perfectly. However when i restart it, it goes back to the recovery logo and although my sim is still in it, it constantly says searching... where it use to show the carrier name and remains on the restore screen and restarts itself every 10 minutes or so
I am getting really frustrated with this, i have tried everything, hard/soft reset, restoring my phone many times, resetting network settings, but itunes either says restore again, insert a valid sim with no pin lock to activate phone, or cant activate phone at this time, try again later. i tried calling my carrier company and they even replaced my sim that i got especially for this phone by telling them that i have a 32 gb iphone 3gs, but still same this, they even tried to unlock it in their system by taking down my phones IMEI and serial Number but still no luck, it still restores fine, carrier and everything works fine but after restarting goes back to the restore screen and wont budge until i restore again
is it a hardware issue? my phone is not under warranty, i am on 4.3.5
i would appreciate any help
Thank you in advance

try using a diff computer
if you can't try creating new user account on that computer
if none works then your looking at a hardware condition... hope your warranty is still valid

• When opening a folder with "items as icons" view, a millisecond fast random image appears in place

Hi,
since I updated to Yosemite (but cannot assure it's related or started exactly that moment) I've been experienced a weird issue.
When I open a folder to navigate it, and it's set on "show items as icons", I see all the icons, for just less than a second, replaced by random images.
It's like if while the proper folder/file icon it's loading, that space is temporarily occupied by the impression of another one (or parts of it), coming from my computer. Sometimes is a photo, sometimes another folder icon not related, sometime is the icon of a software.
The picture then goes away (it stays less than a second) and the icon for the file/folder is then the appropriate one.
I have a Macbook Pro 15-inc, mid 2010.
Is it a known issue? If yes, how can I solve, if possible, this?
Hope can be helpful to others too.
Many Thanks

First off, I do not recommend looking at your time machine while it is running. You can tell if it is running by making sure its menubar icon is shown in Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Time Machine. If the icon is moving, it is running. You can manually backup, which I recommend over automatic backup, as automatic backup can get in your way. Spotlight, if it is indexing (check the menu in the upper right that looks like a magnifying glass), will also slow matters down, and adding things you don't want Spotlight to search to your Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Spotlight -> Privacy pane will help. Note this affects areas you can search in Time Machine as well. If searching content of files is of little interest to you, I find Find Any File much quicker for finding by file name. Backup when you aren't doing anything else, as otherwise, you may find yourself backing up files that haven't had the opportunity to close.
Time Machine also works best if your destination drive is at least twice as capacious as your source drive. Otherwise it is spending a lot of time trying to find places for the archived files, and barely is more archival than a simple clone.

• Mavericks doesn't ask for password when copying files into applications folder (e.g. installing plugins for After Effects)

For example, when i was copied a plugin for after effects into the plugins folder, finder asked me for my password and now it doesn't. I can just copy it directly without any authentication.

Do you have Service Pack 1 for Windows 7? It's listed in the system requirements for CC 2014. If you don't have SP1, AE won't run.
That GPU sniffer error message is usually what happens. This should be a simple fix! Of course, you should always take the normal precautions when updating an OS, but still...

• I updated Firefox. Now, I can't get rid of the blue box saying drag drag the icon to the applications folder. Plus another icon to 'eject' firefox opens. Every time I open firefox, they show up. Even Apple Help could not fix it.

I can close the little blue 'drag' box every time I open Firefox, but that is a hassle, and I know it should not be necessary. When I try to eject the 'peripheral' icon, it says I cannot because Firefox is in use. I have to wait until I close Firefox to be able to eject it off the desktop.
Mac OS X 3.4 GHz, Intel i7

Hi dgbakker-
When you open Firefox and go to the Firefox > About menu, does it say that Firefox is up to date? I've seen at least one other person with this issue, and any more detail would be helpful.

The files that store details of installed add-ons may be corrupt. Open the Firefox profile folder, for details of how to access it see the [[profiles]] article. Now close Firefox and in the profile folder delete extensions.ini, extensions.rdf and extensions.cache. When you re-start Firefox those files will be re-created and will rebuild the list of installed extensions/themes. This should resolve your problem.

• Application unable to identify the managed server after restart

Hi
I have a application deployed in a cluster in production environment which has two managed servers configured to it in separate machines. this application generates a wsdl file.
now we are facing a strange problem as below.
when one managed server crashes and goes down in some situation, the cluster is able to manage it.
we have a class which does remote binding of objects.
Even when we restart the second server it is not able to identify it.

Hi,
I tried starting the server from the console as well as from command prompt. Here I am giving the command below.
nohup ./startManagedWebLogic.sh bi_server1 t3://machineIP:portNo > bis1_startup.log &
But each time I got the same exception.

• Application Folder Always Icon View

Somehow after the past update in Tiger, my applications folder will never show in the last view (list view) I had assigned. It always defaults back to Icon view. This is the same on another Intel iMac I have at work. What is going on? Fixing permissions does not seems to help.

that is odd. hopefully someone more mac savvy than myself will chime in and help you out. almost sounds like an app is to blame...installed any software recently on both?

• View always opens in Icon view, not Column view

Hello,
I open Finder and it always opens in Icon view. I set it to open to Column and close Finder. When I reopen Finder, it opens in Icon again. I've tried trashing the Finder plist, repaired permissions, but nothing. Is there anything I can do to keep it opening the same way? It's pretty frustrating.
Thanks.

Hi Danielmak,
This Terminal command is not specifically related to Column View I'm afraid...
I don't fully understand what it does, but what I can tell you is that the script - for me & a few others - got rid of the common problem where the Finder-window only for the Macintosh HD (i.e. double-clicking on the Mac HD icon) always re-set back to Icon-View after a re-start, despite changing the window to List View and un-checking 'Always Open in Icon View' in View Options (Cmd+J).
I'm not sure I fully understand your problem, but..... You can have separate Finder-windows in different view-types (icon/list/column etc), BUT, the view-type does not automatically change between different types as you drill down into the folders in that particular window.
If you want a particular view-type & window-size to stick for each drive or folder on the desktop, you have to make your changes at the first level, then close the window... When you double-click again on that same drive, the view-type (don't forget to un-check the 'Always open in icon view' in View Options) & window position should be the same. If you drill down into the folders in that hard drive, & THEN make changes to view-type & window size, they will not stick (i.e. the next time you double-click on the HD icon, it will re-open in the originally-set position & view-type.)
Hope that helps. Apologies if I've misunderstood the question.
All the best,
Jason

• Applications Folder won't stay in Icon View

In the Applications Folder I want to have my icons arranged in a certain way at a certain size and always open in that view, but they never stay that way after I switch my mac back on.
I have tried everything:
1. Ticking "Always open in icon view". The tick is always gone next time I switch my mac back on. In all other sidebar folders this tick remains so I always get the view I want, along with icon order and icon view which is OK for other folders - but not Application Folder. It always opens in List View so when I change it to icon view, my icon sizes and order are back to default.
2. Arrange by "Snap to grid" - still opens in List View.
3. Tried "Set as default" in icon view - still opens in List View.
4. Deleted DS Store in Application Folder, as advised elsewhere, and setting it up again with "Always open in icon view". Still opens up again in List View.
5. Deleted "com.apple.finder.plist", as advised elsewhere, and set everything up again, but still opens in List View next time I start up my mac.
Why does the tick in "Always open in icon view" keep disappearing for my Applications Folder next time I start up?
How can I have this folder always open in icon view?
Something is not right somewhere but I don't know how to make it right.

Yes, I have done everything as you've outlined. It has worked as it should for all other Finder/Sidebar folders - Documents, Downloads etc, whether permanently list view, icon view etc.
I also set up the Applications Folder the way I want it, tick the "Always open in icon view" box, then the next time I switch on the tick is gone and it's opened in list view. All other Sidebar folders are fine, and still have the box ticked.
It's just the Applications Folder - something seems to be wrong somewhere and it's not anything I've done, or not done as it works with the other folders.
