Applying filters to source clips

I'm looking to apply a lens correction filter to a source clip... I think I read somewhere that in the latest version if you apply a filter to a source clip it will apply it to everywhere that clip appears in the sequences. Is this true? If so, how do you do it?
Thanks!

  • Best practice - applying Filters

What's the best practice in terms of performance versus code reuse, when applying filters?
Right now, I see 3 ways to specify a filter:
    1. as a <mx:filter> or <s:filter>
    2. in actionscript:
    var glowFilter:GlowFilter = new GlowFilter();
    --OR--
    3. in SVG:
    <s:rect>
      <s:filters>
           <s:DropShadowFilter blurX="20" blurY="20" alpha="0.32" distance="11" angle="90" knockout="true" />
      </s:filters>
    </s:rect>
What's the best way to apply this, in terms of performance? Thanks.

    Fredrik,
Though similar to your workflow, here is how I would do it.
Import those "raw" Clips into a Project, and do my Trimming in that Project, relying on the Source Monitor to establish the In & Out Points for each, and also using different Instances of any longer "master Clip.". I would also do my CC (Color Correction), and all density (Levels, etc.) Effects here. Do not Trim too closely, as you will want to make sure that you have adequate Handles to work with later on.
Use the WAB (Work Area Bar) to Export the material that I needed in "chunks," using either Lagarith Lossless CODEC, or UT Lossless CODEC *
Import my music into a new Project and listen over and over, making notes on what visuals (those Exported/Shared Clips from above) I have at my disposal. At this point, I would also be making notes as to some of the Effects that I felt went with the music, based on my knowledge of the available visuals.
Import my Exported/Shared, color graded Clips.
Assemble those Clips, and Trim even more.
Watch and listen carefully, going back to my notes.
    Apply any additional Effects now.
    Watch and listen carefully.
Tighten any edits, adjust any applied Effects, and perhaps add (or remove existing) more Effects.
    Watch and listen carefully.
Output an "approval" AV for the band/client.
    Tweak, as is necessary.
    Output "final approval" AV.
    Tweak, as is necessary.
    Export/Share, to desired delivery formats.
    Invoice the client.
    Cash check.
    Declare "wine-thirty."
This is very similar to your proposed workflow.
    Good luck,
    Hunt
    * I have used Lagarith Lossless CODEC with my PrE 4.0, but have not tried UT. Both work fine in PrPro, so I assume that UT Lossless will work in PrE too. These CODEC's are fairly quick in processing/Exporting, and offer the benefit of smaller files, than Uncompressed AVI. They are visually lossless. The resultant files will NOT be tiny, so one would still need a good amount of HDD space. Neither CODEC introduces any artifacts, or color degredation.

  • Editing source clip audio

Is there a way to edit the audio of a source clip and have those changes reflect in the timeline clips?
In other words, I made the edits and subsequently learned that the audio could actually be cleaned up a bit better than I'd done it. But I'd like to run filters in the source clips instead of having to go into the timeline to clean the audio up cut by cut. Is it possible to clean the source files and have the changes just cascade to the clips on the timeline?

It depends on how you do the work.  If the work is done in an outside program (Audition, for example) and saved into the file itself, then yes, when you reopen PP the new audio will be heard for each clip instance.
But there's no way to do that entirely within PP. There's no way to apply an effect to a clip except when it's in a sequence, and those effects do not ripple throughout the project.

  • ConcurrentModificationException while applying filters in BPM workspace

    Hi,
We have a Oracle BPM 10g 10.3.3. for weblogic environment. Getting this below error whenever I apply filters in workspace. The work items does not get refreshed either. However when I do a refresh in the browser('F5') the filters are getting applied and the work items are coming up filtere? Is there any way to get rid of this error? Is this a bug in the weblogic server?

  • Why is the SmoothCam (smooth cam) filter not applying to an exported clip?

I have a clip that required some masking (which my graphics guy did on his PC). After importing the masked clip into FCP, I can't get the SmoothCam filter to apply to it. SmoothCam works great on the original shot from the camera (an MXF file), but not on the clip after it was "tweaked outside" of FCP.
Does anyone know if SmoothCam has a limitation on what types of files it will work on (ie only raw footage files, MXF files, etc) or is there perhaps some metadata in the raw file that's needed for SmoothCam?
We had tried exporting a smoothed version before I gave it to him for masking but he couldn't open it on his PC (don't get me started on that! haha).
He did a wonderful job on the masking (using AfterEffects) but the clip still requires the SmoothCam. And SmoothCam is working just fine (I can still apply it on "raw" clips). But when I try to apply it to this "outside exported" clip, it just doesn't do anything...no error, no indication of analyzing the clip or even trying, nothing at all happens.

I apologize. I posted this question a little prematurely. After looking through the FCP manual, I found this quote:
+Note: The SmoothCam filter can be applied only to clips that refer to QuickTime+
+media files. Also, the SmoothCam filter compensates only for the original video+
+within a QuickTime media file; the results of filter and motion parameter settings are+
+ignored. Make sure filters applied to a clip are ordered so that the SmoothCam filter+
    +is applied first.+
I decided to post this reply in case anyone else came across this issue. Basically, it appears that SmoothCam will only work on QuickTime files (.mov I guess?). My graphics guy had made the file as an MP4 (again..don't get me started I opened the his MP4 in QT and re-exported it as a .mov and SmoothCam is analyzing it right now! So all is well.
Sorry for the almost unnecessary post. Feel free to comment to expand/clarify my findings.
    Thanks!

  • Applying filters to specific region within frame

    Hi all,
Forgive me if this is an obvious thing, but I'm trying to learn FCP quickly coming from Adobe Premiere. How do I select a specific area of a clip and then apply a filter to either that area, or everything else? For example, let's say I select an area using colour correction. Obviously if I invert the selection then, say, use the saturation slider I can pick out one colour and make everything else b&w, but what about if I wanted to use that region to, say, apply a blur filter to it? And also, is there a tool which allows me to select a regular region (say an oval) to do the same?
    Thanks,
    Sean

Thanks Shane- I thought about doing it that way. Can you dynamically mask out everything but one colour in this way? In the PC setup we are getting rid of at work we use a bit of realtime hardware from Canopus (Raptor RT card) which enables region selection in a wide variety of ways. You can then apply filters inside the selection or outside, or both, and these can be different filters. That's the sort of thing I'm trying to work out.

  • Apply Filter to Browser Clips Post-Edit

    Hi,
I'm finishing a 4 hour training video project and am now doing the colour correction, but it is taking forever. I understand that I can apply a filter (such as colour correction) to my clips in the browser and they will be corrected for new sequences.
If I'd known this before I started editing the massive project months ago, I would have colour corrected then. But I didn't.
So I was wondering if I can still fast-track my colour correction without re-editing? I tried colour correcting a browser clip and then copying pasting an edited sequence that referred to this clip, but it didn't update in the new sequence.
Any ideas or cheats to get this to work and save me valuable time?
    Thanks in advance.
    Will

open the corrected sample clip in the Viewer window (with the Filters tab displayed)
now, in the timeline, select all the clip instances to which you want to apply the filter
select and drag the filters you wan to apply from the Filters tab in the Viewer window onto the selected clips in the timeline
some other ways of achieving the same thing:
drag filters from the Viewer into the Browser and apply them from there
create a new bin in the Browser and drag a selection of filters into it ... rename the filters alphabetically in the order that you would wish them applied, then drag the whole bin onto a clip in the timeline to apply all contained filters in the given order
copy a clip (cmd-c) with a selection of applied filters and then use Paste Attibutes >> Filters (opt-v and then tick the Filetrs checkbox)) to apply all contained filters to that targeted clip(s)

  • Ways to apply filters to multiclips?

Hullo, I'm hoping someone here will take mercy on me. I'm just an audio engineer (in other words, handicapped!) wandering in video-land, a bit lost in FCP5.1. What I'm seeking is to be able to apply some filters to some master clips, disable them, create a multiclip from the master clips, do all the cutting, fades, etc, then turn the filtering back on with a single command. Is this bonkers, or am I? Uh, I mean, is this bonkers?
I'm working on a 3 angle DV project, where 1 camera needs color correction and another is way too dark. I've found settings in the RGB filter for #1 and with the HSL filter for #2. So far, so good.
I found that I can apply a filter to a clip globally (in the browser), great! But now, when working on the files, everything slows down quite a bit. Drat. So, I've been doing all the editing, fades, etc and then dragging the filter icon onto each piece of each clip in the timeline. It's a pain in the tukus!
I'd be grateful if anyone here would offer some thoughts on this!
    Kind Regards, Scott

add the filter to the master clip. adjust as needed. drag the filter into your favorites folder and rename it "angle A color correction" or something you will remember later.
do this with your other clips/filters.
remove the filters from your master clips and do your edit without the filters on the individual clips.
with your edit complete, do a Find for the name of the first clip and find all. drag your filters to the clips all at once.
now do a find all for the next clip and drag the filters to that one.
    and so on.

  • Can't Apply Filters to an Animation in CS4

I just created a 144 frame animation on CS4, and, horror of horrors, when I went back after the fact to start applying filters (brushstrokes and gaussian blur in particular, though none are working) to my frames, all of the filters were grayed out. Is there a way to fix this issue, or will I have to do all of my frames over again?
    Thanks!

ugh - made such a mess - shot orchids on black background with texture but couldn't get the selection right so though I would have a clipping path made and then turn that into selection. but then I had to make changes to the orchid so the path wasn't quite right.
at any rate I'm back to the original - have made the corrections to the flowers and am now trying to refine the selection so I don't have a black line around the orchids when I use a layer to lighten the background, but also don't loose the stem which is dark and hard to select. - sorry for the confusion.

  • Can't Apply Filters

Did search, of course. New one for me. FCP 6.0.2. Working on a project, that I had started yesterday, mostly color correction. Opened, and the filters won't apply to anything new. The filters that were there, on this and other projects can be manipulated, but I can't apply filters to this or any other project. It's like the filters aren't even there. This includes original, as well as non-Apple(Nattress, etc). Tried trashing preferences, and restarting, etc. Nothing. Tried recapturing footage, and starting completely new. Before re-installing, I thought of checking for a suggestion.

I ended up re-installing, and now it's fine. I was clicking on the clip in the timeline(As always). I even tried dragging from the effects bin in the browser, the way some still do, to the timeline, and nothing. There must have been a bug, I wish I knew. Definitely like to know why things happen. For the record, if it comes to me, what happened, will post.

  • Multiple instances of the same source clip in Project bin

    This is a strange one.
I think its more an issue now than ever due to tapeless format editing. I edit lots of video now shot on Canon 5d. They sometimes have thousands of individual clips.
The problem is that our project files are getting huge and premiere slows to a grinding halt.
We copy paste lots of timelines from one project to another. When we paste, all of the source clips land in the project bin (as you would expect) However, sometimes I have already made reference to the same source files in the edit to begin with (So they are already in the project bin)
However, when I paste a new timeline, it will make another reference to that same source clip in the project bin. Therefore double up reference to a souce clip in the project. Increasing the clips in the overall project, which bloats everything and slows premiere down.
Can premiere be smarter? Can it see that the source file already exists in the project and link to that existing file instead of creating another reference to the same file?
    Hope that makes sence.

I am beginning to think that there is no easy way around this issue.
I have started to use Final Cut and am noticing lots of differences between the two platforms. I have been a Adobe Premiere user for 10 years and I concider myself a NINJA using this program. However, there are definitly differences between the two, this being one of them.
Final cut does not double up on source references in your project bin when copying one sequence from one project into another.
    CLEVER
Its annoying that premiere doubles files up as it gets ridiculously messy in your project bin. Double ups, triple ups, quadruple ups the list goes on.
Its strange cause when you start a Prem project from scratch and import a source clip, you can set in and out points as many times as possible and drag onto the timeline, and it does not duplicate the original source file in the project bin. Thus keeping your project bin neat and clean. However, as soon as you paste a sequence, it goes and duplicates refeneces like its outta control, rather than looking at what you alraedy have in your project bin and saying to itself. (Hmmm well the source clip is already here, so we dont have to duplicate this one....move onto the next file)
Prem is great at lots of things, dont get me wrong. I freaking love the program, however, things like this let it down as the program becomes unusable as it gets bogged down with way too many clip references.
Hmmm, we shall see who wins the day in the end. Time do do some Final Cut edditing now.
P.S. Final cut can do 16 multi clips in a real time edit. Premiere...only 4...come on Prem, pick up your game!

  • Is there any way to retrieve accidentally deleted source clips?

I accidentally deleted source clips for a video project, and now the viewer won't show my video (although I can still see the frames when I run my cursor over the project). Is there any way to retrieve the files or show iMovie where to find the source clips on my computer, kind of like how it's possible to show iTunes where to find source mp3s on my computer when they're moved from the iTunes file? Since I can still see the frames when I move my cursor over the clips (with the exclamation points in the corners), it seems as though the memory of the edited clips must still be in iMovie somehow and be recoverable. Any help would be appreciated - I'd really like to avoid having to re-import and re-edit all of those clips!

    Basics of File Recovery
    Files in Trash
If you simply put files in the Trash you can restore them by opening the Trash (left-click on the Trash icon) and drag the files from the Trash to your Desktop or other desired location.  OS X also provides a short-cut to undo the last item moved to the Trash -press COMMAND-Z.
If you empty the Trash the files are gone. If a program does an immediate delete rather than moving files to the Trash, then the files are gone.  Recovery is possible but you must not allow any additional writes to the hard drive - shut it down. When files are deleted only the directory entries, not the files themselves, is modified. The space occupied by the files has been returned to the system as available for storage, but the files are still on the drive. Writing to the drive will then eventually overwrite the space once occupied by the deleted files in which case the files are lost permanently. Also if you save a file over an existing file of the same name, then the old file is overwritten and cannot be recovered.
    General File Recovery
If you stop using the drive it's possible to recover deleted files that have not been overwritten by using recovery software such as Data Rescue II, File Salvage or TechTool Pro.  Each of the preceding come on bootable CDs to enable usage without risk of writing more data to the hard drive.  Two free alternatives are Disk Drill and TestDisk.  Look for them and demos at MacUpdate or CNET Downloads.
The longer the hard drive remains in use and data are written to it, the greater the risk your deleted files will be overwritten.
Also visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on Data Recovery.

  • Moving and copying events and projects to an external hard drive using Imovie09-Source clip is missing

Some background on what I am doing is importing all of my home video into an event in IMovie. Since DVD's can only hold about 2 hours of footage, I am making a new project for each 2 hours so I can burn the footage onto a DVD. I want to make space on my internal hard drive so I am trying to move the projects that are completed to an external drive. Because I also don't want to lose any footage I have imported into the event I am also copying the home video event to the external drive. (didn't want to move it yet until I know what i am doing, just in case it is lost somehow).
I tried moving a project to the external drive (it was a slideshow for my daughters first birthday which contained photos and video clips from the event that was already copied to the external drive). The project did move to the external hard drive but on the video clips there is a yellow triangle that says source clip is missing. I am moving and copying from within Imovie and NOT the finder so I don't understand why it says the clip is missing when it is definitely a part of the event that is already on the external drive.
What is interesting is the source clip is missing error showed on the first birthday project but it did NOT show as an error when I moved the 2 hour home video project. (All of the video in these projects are coming from the same home video event)
I am trying to make sure that when I move the projects permanently off the internal hard drive and onto the external drive, that I am not losing any part of my projects. I want to be able to easily move them back and forth if needed without any missing files.
Any suggestions as to why I am still receiving the yellow triangle?

As I can't see what you are doing, I can't tell you what you might be doing wrong.
You could try trashing the preferences.
Many weird things happen as a result of corrupt preferences which can create a vast range of different symptoms, so whenever FCP X stops working properly in any way, trashing the preferences should be the first thing you do using this free app.
    http://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/
Shut down FCP X, open PreferenceManager and in the window that appears:-
    1. Ensure that only  FCP X  is selected.
    2. Click Trash
The job is done instantly and you can re-open FCP X.
There is absolutely no danger in trashing preferences and you can do it as often as you like.
The preferences are kept separately from FCP X and if there aren't any when FCP X opens it automatically creates new ones  .  .  .  instantly.

  • All of a sudden, I can't watch any of my films from the Event Library, it also says 'Source Clip is missing' in the other window, I haven't even touched anything that I know of?

All of a sudden, I can't watch any of my films from the Event Library, it also says 'Source Clip is missing' in the other window, I haven't even touched anything that I know of?

    Hi
I haven't even touched anything that I know of?
And You've not moved or emptied any folder on Your Hard Disk named
    • iMovie Event's - or -
    • iMovie Project's
Or - disconnected any external hard disk/s
As one CAN NOT move the Event's or Project's on / via DeskTop/Finder - AS iMovie then loses the connection to them. Moving them - MUST BE DONE - within iMovie application - to work OK.
So if You by meaning or accident moved it/them - Move them back - and iMovie might work again.
ELSE - If You are 100% sure that You didn't move them then
    • Trash iMovie Pref and Cache files
    • Run Repair Permissions - Disk Util tool
    • Run Repair Hard Disk - Disk Util tool - BUT YOU MUST Start-Up Your Mac from DVD or External HD to do this
and may be all will work OK again
    Yours Bengt W

  • Prority applying filters in Develope module

LR is one of the best tools for those who wnat quick ranking, metadata editing for copyright, sorting and processing LARGE quantities of files...
Among those photographers wedding, event and sport shooters are those who really need to fastly sort thigns outm they are most interested in using LR.
also, the same photographers work in the most critical lightning environments, very often we shoot in very bad lightning at very high ISO settings.
for us noise is a real pain.
as we all know, advanced processing of a very noisy raw material exponentially increase noise levels in the final product.
for this reason, inside PS, our workflow include NR filters among the first operations we do...
this way, working on a cleaner background, the noise is kept under a relative control.
often, at the end of our workflow we again trim the nise as a final touch...
back to lightroom, few questons and requests are born from this imediate reality we confront each day:
    1. LR offers NO control regarding order develope adjustments are applied... this is sometimes good, other times a real pain...
    2. there is no information regarding WHICH is the order those filtes are applied when developing RAW files... NONE.
we could guess the order they appear in XML files and inside develope module is the order they are considered when RAW information is processed?
that mean noise is indeed among the last filters applied, correct me if i am wrong.
    3. how we could maximize our results? just make minimum adjustments in LR, go to PS, where we can control the order of applying filters, process and export from there???
not exactly compatible with our need for speed and easy processing large quantities of files that make us choose LR, isn't it?
not to mention RAW data offers much more "hidden" info we can bring to life thru processing compared to exported PS files, even 16 bit tiffs are not as "good" on this regard...this is the reason we shoot raw, to benefit from this better latitude of information raw's offers ....
    4. now the requests themselves:
a} please allow us to choosethe order of applying these filters...maybe not all, not all are that critical, but things like NR we should be able to put among the first filters applied.
if Adobe already thought about this and NR is among the first on that list, please let us know. we NEED to know , we need that info, we need control.
b} please allow us to double the filter alteration.
as i said, we often apply a NR fiter at the beggining of the workflow and then again, another NR with softer settings at the end of the workflow, sometimes just before the final sharpening.
such flexibility and customization availability would really help us, especially those who really need lightroom and do not have the time to bring every picture in PS and tweak it...
imagine shooting 1000 pictures in one session with a delivery deadline of 24 hours...LR is great help, have a lot of great features and we really apreciate the wayit works, even this elastic way of applying filters inside develope module...
BUT it would be a much better tool with more flexibility available.
Thanks Adobe, i also compelted an official request form regarding this subject.
maybe someone who really knows how things work inside developing engine could bring some light in this regard, how things really work right now, even this info could be very helpfull.
    regards ,Liviu

first i need to KNOW officially how thigns work, if ucan offer me a proof i'd gladly accept that.
second, as i said, adobe might have think about that, is a request area and i have theright to request what I think is usefull to me.
i ask for more CONTROL, what is wrong about that?
i also request for 2 alteration using the same filter, NR in this case, once at the beggining and one at the eng of the developing process, i am also entitled to ask for such a thing, right?
qith all due respect, if u do not have similar needs please allow me to ask , understand and not suppose adobe thought of everything and there is no better way, ok?
here is a quote from a XMP file, i PRESUME the order if operation inside that file is the one processes are piped, am i wrong again?

so ,as u see i spaced the noise reduction fucntions in order to make them more visible, i can;t use colors to underline what i consider important, ok?
SO, as u can see here, WB, exposure, contrast, SHARPNESS, brightness, SHADDOWS are ALL listed BEFORE noise reduction...
later on the end of the list there is ANOTHER sharpening listed, so double fiter IS ALREADY applied, thus possible, right???
again, ALL fiters applied BEFORE NR influences noise levels, all increse noise, more or less....
WB influences exposure, try to go 50000 and see where hystogram goes to the right...
exposure also increase noise in shaddow areas.
    contrast increse noise.
    brightness also influence noise.
Shaddows are working exactly on most noisiest levels, the shades...
sharpness before NR??? indeed, is "well thought"...
so, Lee jay, seems i am not that wrong after all, isn't it???
i really hope that order inside XMP to mean nothing but i really doubt is meaningless ...
and again, even if a were wrong, i am entitled to ask explanations as i pay for this product. I also am entitled to ask for what i consider improvements, if Adobe decide to implement or not is another discussion...
a little "friendlier" tone in your replies would also be apreciated, thank you in advance. i hope u do not work for Adobe ;)
so, i am waiting for documented proofs related to my questions, thank you Adobe.
