Apps icon's in Applications window have no entry/stop sign

When I download an app from net and put it in my Apps folder, the icon for the app is a kinda generic icon with a Stop/No Entry sign on it.
I presumed it would go away after the first time I run it and got the warning about downloaded apps, but it doesn't. It goes away EVENTUALLY after many times using the app, but there seems to be no rhyme or reason to it. Any ideas?

The Stop/No usually indicates a prohibitory sign meaning the app can't be used.
Where did you download this application? Which web site? Which app?

but cannot do this because I cannot access Mac App Store
If you can't access the App Store from the Apple menu, Dock, or Applications folder installing the Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo will reinstall the App Store for you.
It's ok to do this even you are already running v10.6.8.

FYI:  Some third party software can cause issues with the App Store >   Mac App Store: Sign in sheet does not appear, or does not accept typed text

  • White Squares instead of Application Icons in Switch Applications

My "Switch Applications" (Command-Tab) has started sporadically showing a white square instead of one of the icons for the applications I have open. I can still click through to them, but it is a little disconcerting.
No particular application seems to be involved more than the others - Firefox, Finder, iTunes, and a Cisco AnyConnect VPN Client have all done this at one time or another today.
This may be related with the other problem that arose today: some application sub-windows sometimes appear simply as white window. (I mention this here because it may be relevant, but this problem has a separate thread: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=13094719#13094719)
Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thank you.

    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist.  Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by restarting the computer and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it  from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

  • When I try to put the icon in the applications folder, it says it can't install it because this file is in use: libsoftokn3.dylib. Ihave closed all apps and I have no idea what this is.

When I try to put the updated Firefox icon into my applications folder, I see this message:
The operation can’t be completed because the item “libsoftokn3.dylib” is in use.
I have closed all apps and don't understand what this refers to.
    Thanks!

  • I cleaned up my mac and now all my applications are gone. I try to open them and it has a question mark on the app icon. Everything from System prefrences, Everything in itunes, iphoto, preview and mail? Please help

I cleaned up my mac and now all my applications are gone. I try to open them and it has a question mark on the app icon. Everything from System prefrences, Everything in itunes, iphoto, preview and mail? Please help

These question marks are on your dock? And you can't open applications from your dock?
If so, try this: Open a new finder window and navigate to the Applications folder in your hard disk. The applications in question should still be in there (the Applications folder). So drag each of the application icons that you want to be available on your dock from the Applications folder onto your dock, one by one. Take each of your question mark icons that are on the dock and drag them off the dock to get rid of them. See if that fixes you up.
Now, if your hard disk no longer has an Applications folder in it, or the Applications folder is empty, you are going to have to reinstall OS 10.6 then do a software update to bring you back up to OS 10.6.8. You may be able to just go to the "optional installs" folder on the installer DVD and maybe all the stock applications are there -- I don't remember and I don't have an installer DVD handy to look. That would be way easier than doing a full blown OS reinstall. Also, as I recall, if OS 10.6 was on the computer when you bought it from the store, I think there should be an "extras" DVD that has a handful of applications that could be reinstalled from it, too.

  • App not showing icon in iTunes Application

I created an .icns for my iPhone application, entered its name into 'Info.plist->icon file' and when I build the application and view it in Finder, the application displays the icon image. But when I drop the App onto the Application window of iTunes, there's no icon image, just the default icon. And the Get Info says there's no artwork.
    Did I miss a step?

I'm not sure what you expect iTunes to do with your app. The place to check your iPhone icon is in the Simulator and the device. darkpegasus is correct, the icon needs to be a 57 x 57 pixel png file. An .icns is for an OS/X app, so that's why Finder likes it. I wouldn't expect it to work in an iPhone app, but even if it shows up it's not the correct format and won't be accepted by the store.
I'd also recommend leaving info.plist->Icon file blank and using the default name for your icon, which is Icon.png. I've had bad luck with renaming that file and changing the plist field; maybe just a mistake at my end, but why change from the default if you don't have to?
    Hope that helps!

For anyone else reading this thread, it is worth knowing that sometimes an email is, or can be, corrupted thereby jamming the works. The solution above is good, but I just wanted to suggest another one.
If the problem arises, go to an online mail access service, such as Mail2Web.com and login to you mail account there and delete the offending message.
    Problem solved.
And George, as this is all entirely voluntary, whinging about no takers may not endear people to you. Besides which, a few minutes of searching on Google would have found you a number of solutions.

  • Applications  open, have menus, but no windows

officially the weirdest bug I've ever had on a mac... When my computer is on for a period of time, parts of iTunes stop working. The library window is just gone.... The little "iTunes is loading your library" appears when I quit and relaunch the application, then nothing. The equalizer wont even appear, even if it is indicated as being displayed. I have my menu bar, I can open it and quit apps with ease, but the window simply isn't there. I have the same issue with system preferences. No matter what I click, or ask it to display, no finder window ever appears and no system preferences ever display... I restart my computer, and everything is fine again (for a while) Weird thing is, new playlists will pop up once the app starts working again after the restart, so the system is responding to my commands, but it doesn't show me anything??? I can even hit play using the application menu in the dock, and whatever music I last had selected starts to play. No library, or any other window ever displays! And no, I did not just minimize the window and forget to check the dock. It is gone. Same for system preferences. The finder still works, and I can launch Word, iPhoto, whatever.
I am running Flip4Mac, 360 Connect, and MissingSync (i have not synced since leopard, as MarkSpace says its incompatible) as third party system preferences, and I use EyeTV 2.5 which has a lot of iTunes interaction.
I checked the last 3 days (14 pages) of leopard posts but have not seen this issue. Please help! Clean installs are exhausting, even though I have multiple partitions and a .mac account.

one more thing: I have front row enabler installed (dual 2GHZ G5) and it still works, displays artwork, etc...
I think it has something to do with the "finder stopped" working posts that I have seen so many of. I also had an issue where I could see my desktop, but no matter how many times i double clicked any of my hard drives, including iDisk, partitions, and external USB disks, no finder window ever appeared until I restarted....
I have had to restart 3-6 times per day for every day that I have ben using leopard.

How can I delete an app from launchpad, that doesn't have the little cross in the left top corner. The app isn't an App Store app. The application is also not present anymore in my application's folder in finder.
I tried to use the attached command through TERMINAL :
    sqlite3 ~/Library/Application\ Support/Dock/*.db "DELETE from apps WHERE title='Help';" && killall Dock
sqlite3: Error: too many options: "DELETE from apps WHERE title='Help';"
Use -help for a list of options.
But i didn't work as I got the above error message.

I'm in the same boat as you -- except that I manage both a school lab (volunteer job) and macs in the enterprise (pay job).  What I think we need is the Education Volume Purchasing Program
    http://www.apple.com/education/volume-purchase-program/faq.html
Unfortunately this all seems a little rough around the edges -- for example, I have found updates for AppStore apps on the support.apple.com updates download site, but then when I install them via ARD they don't actually update the software.  (The AppStore icons still show as needing the updates, and the version info reports the old version.)  The documentation is also vague about which AppleID to use in which circumstance.  I think they just haven't finished thinking through the implications of the various procedures and policies upon the various kinds of customers.  When we deployed Mountain Lion on the school lab, we made an install usb and went around and installed it on each computer -- and it appears that you are on the honor system as far as paying for all of the licenses that you install.  We did!  But they appear to have no way to enforce it.
So far, I have only deployed 9 Lion macs in my day job, and our "solution" to the AppStore showing updates problem has been to drag the AppStore icon off of the users' docks so they don't see them!

You don't need iDVD unless you are going to make DVDs. If you are just trying to share files, iDVD won't help you at all.
What you want to do is in iMovie, choose File/Share/File, and export that way. It creates an .mp4 file that should be readable on Macs or Windows.
You could also File/Share/YouTube if you don't mind posting them to YouTube, because of course YouTube videos are watchable by any Mac or Windows computer made in the last 10 years.

Paulou12 what type of a Creative Cloud Membership do you have?  You can find details on how to update Lightroom using the Creative Cloud Desktop application at Install and update apps - https://helpx.adobe.com/creative-cloud/help/install-apps.html.
Finally if you are in a managed environment then please work with your I.T. department to apply the update.

  • Why are so many app icons either pixelated or missing?  No photo thumbnails in Photoshop CS6 and missing icons for newly installed applications.

Even after a clean install of new applications and permission fixes and disk repairs, this problem persists.  Apple must have changed some specifications for thumbnail icons in Mountain Lion.   This is a particularly frustrating problem with Adobe Photoshop CS6.  If you attempt to save a CS6 file in any format, the thumbnail image icon just disappears or appears dark, with no image visible.  I have spoken with both Adobe and Apple about this and no one seems to want to accept responsibility, but I'm beginning to believe the issue is with Mountain Lion, as I did a clean install of a Mountain Lion friendly and compatible app today and the end result was that there is no icon for the application.  The application will run, but you cannot see an icon for it in the dock, only the name.  This is absurd!  Seems like paid "upgrades" are now becoming downgrades.   At least that's how I feel when I actually lose rather than gain functionality.

this is happening to me too. if i create a photoshop jpeg file it has no thumbnail icon. the file seems to be there by name only?

  • Application moved error and question marks for dock app icons - related?

i am reposting this in the Mac Pro forum in addition to the Mountain Lion forum as i have been posting various issues on the mac pro here and i have gotten great help in solving them. also i am hoping to put a finishing touch on my computer setup after having done a FRESH INSTALL of the OS on both my computers with a manual migration of data (no Library items) so as to try and resolve old issues. i hope the experts on the list do not mind this posting and/or can offer advice on this specific issue.
i am getting the attached error this morning on my MacBookPro (Mountain Lion) and have gotten it before on my Mac Pro (Lion). i have had to do a fresh install of the OS and a manual migration of my data (no Library settings etc) due to slightly similar issues.
does anyone know what this errror is saying has happened?
i /did/ have an additional internal hard drive on the MAC PRO that Spotlight was indexing and which i had to take off of the Spotlight indexing functionality but this does not explain in any way (since there are no additional HD's on my macbookpro) why it just happened this morning on the macbookpro.
is this related to an issue where there may be QUESTION MARKS (instead of an app icon) in the dock in some of my other software?? i have one of these on my MBP and one on my MacPro even after the fresh install.
    TIA

The Dock stores Aliases to the actual Applications. When you get a question Mark, it is caused by a Bad Link. The Application may have changed versions, moved, or been deleted. There is nothing especially magical about this. You can remove a Bad Link by dragging the link off the Dock, or add a proper link by dragging the Application Icon onto the correct area of the Dock.
OS X Mountain Lion: Customize the Dock
Apple-installed Applications need to remain in the Applications folder so that they remain protected and can be updated properly. The Installer will attempt to add links that point to the current Applications in the Applications folder, but if you have a pre-existing Bad Alias your bad Alias will not be Trashed. This may give you either the "moved..." message, or the Question Mark Icon in the Dock, or a grayed-out Icon with a "prohibited sign" if you have added things not appropriate for this version of Mac OS X.
