Arbitary Skype Wifi charges!!!!!

I went to my loved cafe today. Evertime I connect to the hotspot the skype wifi popup is shown. Normally I close it and connect though the portal that gives you a FREE 1 hour of internet.Today I clicked connect by mistake.
Since it was a mistake, I immediatelly started to search how to disconnect. No chance!!!!.
I switched off the wifi, I closed the laptop, I exited skype. Nothing hapenned.
After 30 minutes a charge of 4.2Euros appeared on my account for 29:58 minutes of wifi!
Is there any 29:58:00 minimum connection time documented anywhere in the skype wifi site?
If anybody from skype is reading this forum, I would like to know what is the meaning of "you pay what you use" that is advertised for this service. The correct should be "You pay of what we decide to charge you".

  • Skype wifi charges money even when the it is disab...

It has happened several times that I am not using skype, but just connected by the phone, and that I was charged by skype wifi.  It really doesn't make sense to me, as the skype wifi is disabled to my account.  Is there a solution? And how can skype credit back my money?

I forgot to add, it's a Verizon phone so it's CDMA. It used to be only GSM phones that did this.

  • Skype WiFi charging question. ASAP Reply please...

So, I'm on a Virgin train and connected using Skype WiFi. The normal charge is £3 for 1h or £6 for 3 hours.
If I use if for 3 hours, I'm assuming I'll only be charged £6? The thing is, after using it for half an hour, it chagred me another £3. So it seems to be charging me £3 for half an hour?!?!?!?!?
    Wtf?
Super User/Rock Star on the Spotify Community!

completely drain and recharge the battery every 30th of the month as directed for Lithium batteries by Apple.
    That's not "directed".
The only reason it is recommended is so the system knows how much battery is left.
In fact, draining lithium batteries is not a good idea as they are not meant for deep cycling.
And completely draining the battery means simply using it till it shuts down (~15%), not till the charge is zero.
I would not recommend leaving it plugged in all the time.
Just use it and charge it when you need to. About once a month, don't charge it and just use it till it shuts down then do a full charge. Again, this is only so the system knows how much battery is left. It's not for "conditioning" the battery.

    Here is a use case:
You are travelling a lot and looking for cheap and reliable ways of connecting to internet at various location to check your emails/chats/news etc.
You discover Skype WiFi. You then install it, say, on your Android device and purchase some Skype Credit through www.skype.com
You are in the airport and need internet.
You connect to, say, Boingo hotspot in your device WiFi settings, launch Skype WiFi and click Connect. That's it. You get internet connection in your device. Once you've finished all your tasks, just click Disconnect in the app.
    That's pretty much it.

  • Skype WIFI no longer free - being charged even tho...

Purchased SP2 8/256 Dec 2013. Exchanged the Skype premium account voucher that comes with it end of January which gives free 12 months Skype Wifi.
All working fine till mid May where all of a sudden I start being charged for my Skype Wifi usage which is supposed to be free for 12 months together with the Skype unlimited account.
Escalated to Skype support who keep repeating that all is fine and that if I use my SP2 I should not be charged, but as expected I keep being charged.
So desperate plea to this community - Has anyone noticed this behaviour in the past and if so, how did you resolve ?  And before anyone responds have you updated to latest version- the answer if yes

  • Using skype on skype wifi while in Japan for calls...

I am subscribed to us and canada plan here in the U.S.
I always call Japanese number from here with skype to go number (U.S. number) and it will charge a couple of cents/minute.
If I take my iphone to Japan and call on skype wifi, does it still work the same (as far as the rate) or do I need japanese skype to go number because I'll be in Japan?
Of course, I'd have to pay for skype wifi but I think it's cheaper than buying it in japan.
I thought wherever I am, the subscription control the way it is charged.
    Thanks.

When calling via Skype it matters only where you're calling to.  It doesn't matter where you're calling from.
You may find Skype WiFi helpful as long as you understand it's to pay for not-for-free public wifi hotspots.   If you have free wifi available you can still use your subscriptions and don't need Skype WiFi.

  • Skype wifi rates philippines

hello guys, just asking help, what are the rates of skype wifi here in the philippines.
how it works?? please help me to understand how skype wifi works tnx

Skype WiFi depends on the minute you have consumed. You are charged depending on the minutes you used.

  • Skype wifi not allowing me to disconnect

I have used Skype wifi a few times over the past few months and it is very good. A recent issue has arisen though. We are in Europe on holidays. I used it in Belgium and France (Paris) and it is quite good. In Holland, today and yesterday, I have connected to the KPN network and when I disconnect from Skype Wifi it says "your already online" and the disconnect button is gone. I checked, the connection stays live. I then "forget" the network and I lose connection but I find I was still charged for 14 minutes. The time I was online to disconnect was only 2-3 minutes and even to the time I "forgot" the network was no more thn 5-6 minutes in total. So, disconnect does not work and I am being charged excessive amounts. Is this a bug or limited to the Dutch KPN network?

Did you ever get a resolution to your problem? - I am having the same (can't disconnect from) trouble with skype wifi - and Skype support can't seem to understand my problem.
    thanks,
    Bill

  • Skype Wifi - advertised as free until January 2014...

    Hi All,
Sending this out for two reasons - firstly to see if anyone else is affected (though I suspect most people won't notice unless their credit was wiped out), secondly as a warning to not leave a lot of credit on your Skype account just in case!
The Skype Wifi app advertised that it would provide free wifi access up to the end of January 2014 - this is as advertised on both itunes and Google Play app stores.
However, I used Skype Wifi while abroad recently and was charged for every use - it wiped the credit on my account.
I cannot verify my account so cannot communicate over email (and they can give no hint as to which of the 23 questions asked didn't match - they just keep asking you to fill it in again).  So I've resorted to chat, which requires no validation (?!?).
So far I've had very conflicting responses from Skype's (rather useless) customer service:
    - I was incorrectly billed, I will be called back to resolve this [I wasn't called]
    - the content of the itunes/google play app descriptions is not under Skype's control
    - the content of the itunes/google play app descriptions is written by Skype's marketing team in Luxembourg, not the support team in Phillipines, so no refund can be given
    - @SkypeSupport on twitter would "love to help" but then ignore my response
    Cheers,
    Anthony

  • Skype Wifi Billing.... Misleading?

So, i'm at an airport and I just decided to use Skype Wifi instead of the default airport billing.  Seemed that $0.09 per minute worked out to a better rate than the airport.   Skype says you are "only billed for the minutes you use".   However the second i signed in I was charged about $3.   Then i accidentally logged out after about 5 mintues, logged back in and was charged ANOTHER $3.... there is no per-minute anything going on here.   It seems Skype has a seriously misleading information going on here.
It seems to actually bill in chunks....

Here is how it works: when you connect to Skype WiFi, it reserves Skype Credit for a 30 minute session. Once you Disconnect, it charges only for minutes used and the remainder is returned to your Skype Credit balance.
Please note that you must Diconnect in the app first (not log out or kill the app), otherwise it might still charge you for a full 30 min session.
You may also contact Customer Service and ask to investigate, if you are sure you did press Disconnect.

  • Skype WiFi - an access tool only. Do not confuse ...

What Skype WiFi does is provide a way to pay for access to the internet; rather than typing a credit card number in a public venue.
You use your Skype credit to pay for the access fee, and only for minutes needed as opposed to having to purchase a day pass or block of time.
It is an access tool only. Not a wifi provider like Boingo or Cloud.
This is the main purpose of Skype WiFi.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You open your browser and see the inital holding page of the hotspot provider.
If Skype is an option given by the hotspot provider to pay for access at this point you can then follow the prompts and login.  It's an ACCESS tool only at this point -- NOT a contact tool for IM or video chat. That is only enabled once you have the WiFi connection, and Skype loaded to your PC.
This service used to be called Skype Access. In hindsight it might have been better not to rename it!
You pay for access by using your Skype credit - instead of your credit card. That's the only thing it offers!
Once you login and pay using Skype credit, the hotspot is activated by the hotspot provider. You can then surf the web.
Here's an example. INO_KOL has a hotspot. People who want access can pay him using either their credit card, or....if they prefer not to use a card (don't have one?), they can use Skype credit. So...... they open their browser and see INO_KOL's holding page. This has one of two things, a credit card payment option and a Skype user ID and password option which is only for them to enable the charging of their Skype credit.
Which ever one they choose enables access to the web.
    Hope this helps.

  • Turning off Skype Wifi

I am using a MAC and the MAC version of Skype. How do I completelu disable and turn off Skype Wifi?I don't EVER want to use Skype Wifi. If I can't get a connection without Skype Wifi, then I don't want a connection. How do I tell Skype to NEVER inform me of Skype Wifi and NEVER even attempt to make a Skype Wifi connection on my behalf. If I cannot remove the Skpe Wifi option then I will just uninstall and abandon Skype. I stumbled across this question on the Windows side and attempted to follow their directions, but apparently I offended them when I said that the Mac version had no ability to turn off the Skype Wifi. If the interface to Skype on Windows is so completely different than the Windows version, then Skype isn't a serious application with a team that is planning for the future. So... Is there a way to disable the Skype Wifi BS on a mac?

I've seen several posts on different threads from Mac users about this - usually sounding irritated because they have evidently inadvertantly connected to Skype WiFi when they didn't want to and lost credit. The responses from forum moderators seem often to border on rudeness and the information that, on a Mac, you simply can't turn off Skype WiFi is slow to emerge, only after scolding for being on the wrong forum etc. So far I've found no explanation as to why this option is not provided to Mac users. (Skype belongs to Microsoft doesn't it?). I can vouch that this is a real problem. I have recently been connected inadvertantly to Skype Wifi in a hotel and charged a significant chunk of credit when I thought I was connecting to the free hotel wifi. In addition the unwanted Skype wifi pop-up repeatedly stops you from connecting to the wifi you want to by knocking you off the necessary login page. I therefore believe that this is not being fixed as a deliberate policy to deceive Mac users out of Skype credit and I request a full explanation as to why this is not so if indeed that is the case.

  • Do I need BOTH Skype and Skype WIFI apps for my iphone?

it was stated, the difference is with skype wifi, you can use your credit you bought on skype to pay for wifi access in hotels, etc.
therefore you don't need skype wifi if you have infetnet or free wifi.
what is so hard to understand?

That's how I understood the answer. Using the 'normal' Skype app you can use 3G or WiFi (depending on my settings). If WiFi access needs to be paid for (on a train, through a hotel, etc.), it often comes in minimum 1 hour blocks, in which case Skype WiFi allows you to access WiFi just for the duration of the Skype call, providing you have sufficient Skype credit. There are two reasons why you might want to do this: (a) even though you might have your phone service set to 'Roaming', calls in or out might not work (happens to me all the time in the Middle East); and (b) you only pay for your actual call time. Whether that represents overall value for money depends on Skype call rates versus the 1-hour charge from the train, hotel, etc., so that element is worth checking. As to 'most WiFI hotspots being free', that may be true for much of urban Europe and the US, but it's not true for large parts of the rest of the world.
