Arch as Vmware guest broken?

Hi!
For the past couple of weeks!! (ever since systemd 'upgrade') things in vmware-land have been going from bad to worse.
I have Arch setup as a guest within vmware running on a windoes host. (Also on a mac host, same problems)
Now, I migrated the system to systemd, and basically had a functioning vm (with copy & paste, timesync etc.).
There was one problem though, shared folders would not work.
More specifically when trying to 'ls' the folder (or indeed accessing it any other way) the kernel would OOPS, basically freez up.
Others are having the same problem, there's even an official bug-report with open-vm-tools.
Same problem, and here.
Bug Report for open-vm-tools.
There's a comment there about this being fixed with the latest build (9.2.2) but that is not the case.
I've also updated vmware workstation today from 9.0.0 to 9.0.1 with no change.
But thing are getting even worse.
See this bug has been preventing me from updating xorg-server & xorg-server-common from 1.13.0-3 1.13.0-4 as I was seeing the exact same issue as mentioned in the report, and as of yesterday:
libglapi (9.0-1 -> 9.0.1-1)
libegl (9.0-1 -> 9.0.1-1)
libgl (9.0-1 -> 9.0.1-1)
mesa (9.0-1 -> 9.0.1-1)
svga-dri (9.0-1 -> 9.0.1-1)
open-vm-tools (1:9.2.0-2 -> 1:9.2.2-2)
open-vm-tools-modules (1:9.2.0-3 -> 1:9.2.2-1)
compositing doesn't seem to work, or at least gnome-session loads but instantly freezes with following segfault:

I can run i3 (no compositing) without such problems though, in fact I'm posting from it right now...
EDIT:
I forgot one further problem.
On shutdown/reboot the system hangs, as mentioned here
So, has anyone else got some or all of these issues, knows of any solutions?

So, finally some success - problem now is I don't know what actually solved it.
I managed to get Shared folders to work!!
Now either this just started working after the last kernel upgrade (3.6.6-1 -> 3.6.7-1) OR It's down to this small configuration detail I took away from your config p0x8!!!
I noticed you were giving the name of your share (.host:/docs, whereas I was omitting it. Adding the correct name resulted in me being able to access my shared folder.
For completeness:
$ cat /etc/systemd/system/mnt-hgfs.automount
[Unit]
Description=Load VMware shared folders
ConditionPathExists=.host:/Shared
[Automount]
Where=/mnt/hgfs
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
$ cat /etc/systemd/system/mnt-hgfs.mount
[Unit]
Description=Load VMware shared folders
ConditionPathExists=.host:/Shared
[Mount]
What=.host:/Shared
Where=/mnt/hgfs
Type=vmhgfs
#Options=defaults,noatime
Options=uid=1000,gid=100,fmask=0113,dmask=0022,permissions,nodev,nosuid,exec,nls=utf8,noatime
[Install]
WantedBy=multi-user.target
Maybe I'll downgrade the kernel just to see if it still works, but if that's not the case, this is a bug, as I can omit the Shared folder's name in an ubuntu-guest for instance.
Thanks again for trying this out p0x8!!
UPDATE:
I went ahead and downgraded the kernel, and can now confirm that the problem was down to this configuration issue, not the kernel.
The issues remaining are gnome3's shell is broken, I am forced to use fallback-mode (great that its still around imho, because things DO break), the latest update to xorg-server and xorg-server-common cause X to crash instantly(version 1.13.1-1 works), and the shut-down delay.(see a few posts down)

  • Implementing BitLocker on Windows 7 Ultimate in a VMWare Guest

    Wow...Prior to this problem, printer issues were the most annoying.I have a 32-bit instance of Windows 7 Ultimate installed in a VMWare guest. The host is a brand new business class Core i7 laptop with 16 GB RAM.I am trying to implement BitLocker in the guest OS, but the first issue was that it couldn't find a TPM (Trusted Platform Module). Understandable considering it was in a virtual world. So I found the group policy option to allow BitLocker to work without a TPM; check. BitLocker let me go to the next step. I saved the startup key to a USB flash drive (which it prompts me to do), and it appears it did what it needed to do because it wouldn't let me go to the next step otherwise. There is then a checkbox with an option to check the system before disk encryption begins. I check that because I need to know it works 100% before I...

  • Same Numbers file opens fine under host but blank under VMWare guest

    Am working toward a daily use virtual machine as an operating environment.  Using VMWare Fusion 4 and Lion 10.7.4 for both host and guest.  Host and guest each have 4 GB RAM allocated and gobs of disk space.
    Have iWork '09 installed under both host and guest.  Trying to use a Numbers worksheet that's stored both in iCloud and DropBox - doesn't matter which, same results.  This is the same physical file accessed from both host and guest.  In the host, worksheet opens fine.  In the guest, Numbers '09 starts fine, but no worksheet contents show - the tree shows on the left, but worksheet shows blank.  Have tried pulling in backup copy and re-uploading to DropBox.  Same results.  Same behavior for Pages .09.
    Other applications (other than iWork) seem OK so far.
    Anyone have an idea what may be going on?
    Thanks!

    UPDATE:
    I have backed up to Lion 10.7.3 in a new vmware guest, reinstalled iWork '09 from the retail disk into the guest.  No change.  Pages, Numbers and Keynote work spaces all show empty on guest screen (even though same files open fine under hot side).
    I have downloaded latest Parallels, installed, created Lion 10.7.4 guest, installed iWork '09 from retail disk and same results.  Host works fine, guest loads but shows blanks screen.
    I had a note from one person who said they had similar setup and same s/w versions all around.  Says his works fine under guest.  So far, only difference I can see is that he's running Numbers and Pages apps he downloaded from the App Store whereas I'm using an iWork retail disk.  We're both using iWork '09 version 2.1.
    Really now, could THAT be the problem?
    Ideas anyone?
    Thanks.

  • VMWare Guests can't bridge in to Wifi

    Network setup: WLC4402, 1141 APs.  DHCP is required on all SSIDs.
    A co-worker has a setup where his laptop runs VMWare and is attached to Wifi.  On his guest Virtual Machines, he notices that they work fine when in NAT mode, but when he tries to bridge them on to the WiFi network, DHCP requests timeout.  I duplicated his configuration with VMWare player, and got the same behavior.
    When we plug in to wired connections, the Guests are able to bridge on to the network just fine.
    Any ideas on this?  I'm thinking perhaps the DHCP requirement option may be preventing the VMWare guests from bridging.

    Forgot to mention we're running 6.0.202.0 on the 4402.  Haven't bothered upgrading to 7.0 as I don't think there's any new features.
    Sounds like changing the APs to H-REAP mode is the best fix.  Our network is already configured for trunking so it shouldn't be that big of an issue.

  • Deploy Server 2012 to VMWare Guest using Paravirtual SCSI

    Hi,
    I attempting to use Boot Media to boot a VMware Guest OS to image with Server 2012.
    I have imported the following drivers from the x64 VMware Tools:
    VMware PVSCSI Controller
    VMware PCI Ethernet Adapter
    vmxnet3 Ethernet Adapter
    I have added the drivers to the x64 Boot image in SCCM 20012 R2 then I went ahead and created the Boot media
    When the VMware Guest boots up the boot image I can manually configure an IP address and successfully retrieve the Assigned Task Sequence (Based on a manually imported Computer Object/MAC address)
    Long story short... I realized that the Imaging process is failing at the Partition/Format section of the Task Sequence.
    Upon further investigation I can clearly see that the "C:\ Drive" is not being detected.
    what am I missing? are there any suggestions out there or has someone else had any similar issues in their environment?

  • Slow pageloads browsing vmware guest when offline

    I frequently develop locally against a CentOS vmware guest running apache/mysql. I use a private hostname for a valid public domain name... e.g., local.domain.com. I have an entry in /etc/hosts so my local domain resolves to the local guest IP while the wildcard for the domain resolves to a public IP (i.e., *.domain.com).
    When I have an active internet connection everything works fine.
    When I do not have an internet connection (i.e., offline) the same setup works but page loads are extremely slow (5-7x slower than when internet connection is active).
    Using Firebug in FF I can see the breakdown of each HTTP Request... it appears the additional time is being spent after DNS (DNS does not appear to be the issue) in the Connecting stage.
    I see the issue in Firefox (3.5, downgraded to 3.0 to verify it wasn't 3.5) and in Safari.
    I have not been using this setup on a regular basis lately so I'm not sure if it started pre-Snow Leopard upgrade or not.
    thanks for any help figuring this out.

  • Can't install arch in vmware fusion , /dev/tty7 error

    I have the latest vmware fusion ,I downloaded the i686 core iso image.
    I use vmware fusion (the latest)  i select the default options , when I get to setup if i select "auto prepare harddrive" it fails and tells me to see /dev/tty7 which I can't .
    So i manually partition, and then when I select files to install I get the error "cannot start pacman see /dev/tty7"
    So i thought maybe the disc image was bad, Ive downloaded the iso from different sites/sources with the same problem. It would seem vmware should be the easiest to install to.
    I read the wiki but I don't understand, I have no other issues installing other linux distros in vmware fusion.

    Ok got past the auto partition error issue, instead of selecting the first option to install arch from the live disc, select the 2nd option for IDE with no sata drivers in vmware fusion. I think it takes care of both problems

  • USB on Arch Linux as guest in virtualbox

    Hi. I'm trying to access the usb port in the arch linux running as guest in the virtualbox so I added in the "/etc/fstab" file this line:
    "none /proc/bus/usb usbfs auto,busgid=###,busmode=0775,devgid=108,devmode=0664 0 0"
    to mount the usb automatically, where "###" is the group id that the user is in. As i wasn't in any group and 'vboxusers' group wasn't created when I installed "virtualbox-guest-utils" as I expected so I created the group and added my self into it doing:
    sudo groupadd vboxusers
    sudo usermod -aG vboxusers rsegecin
    grep vboxusers /etc/group
    after that when I tried to mount all devices using "mount -a" I get an error saying that the mounting point  "/proc/bus/usb" doesn't exist, so I created another mount point in "/home/rsegecin/usb" and I got another error saying that the file system type 'usbfs' is unknown.
    how do I register the file system type 'usbfs'? how can I access the usb port in guest arch linux?
    thank you very much.

    Okay, this is a long shot.  Let's try this experiment.  I found a suggest that one try this as root:
    mount --bind /dev/bus/usb /proc/bus/usb
    But here is what that does.  In the olden days, /proc was the way to deal with virtual file systems that let you communicate with the kernel.  It used to be there was /proc/bus/usb.  That was deprecated, and later removed in favor of /dev/bus/usb.  It kind of makes sense, because it is a device, not a kernel thingy.  But there are legacy software that look in /proc/bus.  That bind command links the old method to the new method.  But, it also says that the stuff in /dev/bus/usb is the same stuff that had been in /proc/bus/usb.  (Forgive we, I am thinking this though as I type).   Where this leaves me is this, your device is appearing at /dev/bus/usb/001/002.  You can prove that by removing the device (using the Virtualbox tools to disconnect the device from the VM).  That node should go away, then reappear when you reconnect it.  The problem is what do you do with it?  I don't think that usbfs exists anymore.
    What kind of device is it?  There may be a better way to deal with it.  Obviously, if it is mass storage, there are ways to use it as such.  Likewise, if it is a character device (serial port, modem, etc) there may be a /dev/ttyUSBx type node to talk to it.  If it is a HID (Human Interface Device) like a keyboard, mouse, joystick. or a lot of widgets that use the HID model (like credit card readers), there will be a node like /dev/hidraw0.  I have used that quite a bit.
    Maybe we should back up a bit.  After you (virtually) connect the device, what gets appended to the journal?  Also, what is the output of lsusb -v

  • VMWare guest OS no internet using DHCP, OK with static

    My 3801HGV gateway is working fine providing DHCP to devices on my network, but I have a Macbook with VMWare Fusion installed and have a Windows 7 Pro running as a guest and when it obtains an address from the gateway it has no internet access. The DNS and gateway are the address of the gateway. If I set the IP of the guest to static using the same values it works fine. The network adapter of the guest has a different MAC address than the Macbook's nic. If I connect my Macbook to my iPhone's hotspot it works with DHCP OK. Is there a setting in the gateway I've missed that would cause this?

    Although I have the NVG589 gateway, I suspect I have the same problem. I noticed last night that I could not properly connect via VPN to my company network. (The last time I tried doing so was on 7/24 and was successful.) I have made no changes to my VM nor to my Mac so something happened between the 24th of July and yesterday. (update of some sort pushed to the router perhaps?) I will try assigning a static IP in the guest when I get home to see if that resolves my VPN issue. Like you I do not have any issues if I connect my Mac to a hotspot or a network OTHER than my home network.

  • SCOM Performance/Availability metrics on VMWare guests - query

    Hi,
    I'm monitoring our VMWare server infrastructure with SCOM 2012.  I'm looking for a bit of clarification Re the metrics which SCOM produces to those that are provided by vCenter.
    Basically this has stemmed from seeing some alerts such as Available megabytes of Memory monitor which has alerted due to SCOM reporting the agent has < 100MB available yet the vCentre memory reports show guest has well above the threshold available and
    therefore shouldnt have alerted.  So when discussing with our server team who would rely on the vCenter metrics, its causing them to lose faith in any metrics/alerts which SCOM is gathering. - the various CPU/Memory performance graphs from SCOM are not
    consistent with the vCenter ones.
    Can anyone advise if the SCOM metrics are (more) reliable than the native vCenter ones as indicators of health and provide the evidence for arguing the case either way.
    Any help much appreciated - and Merry Christmas :-)

    Hi,
    I think you need to check the memory usage on the guest manually and compare the result. In the productive environment, please test, compare and then decide which one is more reliable and suitable in your environment.

  • [solved] VirtualBox(Arch host, XP guest): Bridged Adapter

    It's fairly easy to enable it in VirtualBox. But whenever I start the xp, VirtualBox gives me:
    Failed to start the virtual machine XP.
    Failed to open/create the internal network 'HostInterfaceNetworking-eth0' (VERR_SUPDRV_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND).
    One of the kernel modules was not successfully loaded. Make sure that no kernel modules from an older version of VirtualBox exist. Then try to recompile and reload the kernel modules by executing '/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup' as root (VERR_SUPDRV_COMPONENT_NOT_FOUND).
    My VirtualBox version is Version 3.1.4. And this is the first time I try it, so there should be no "older version" exists in my computer...
    (I am trying to use it to connet to the vpn server in my department, the default NAT connection won't do it, that's why I need the bridged adapter).
    I will really appreciate if anyone can help.

    Check that vboxnetflt is loaded if you have already put it in your modules line in rc.conf
    lsmod | grep vbox
    If not load it manually:
    insmod /lib/modules/2.6.32-ARCH/misc/vboxnetflt.ko
    You can put this in your /etc/rc.local for a more permanent solution.
