Arch as Xen DomU or standalone install?

Hi fellow Archers.
To mods: please move the post to appropriate section if this is not one
I have some questions on virtualisation, file servers and Arch.
I want to build my NAS box, with expand-ability in mind. I would love to use Arch as the OS to serve files and to be WWW/development server as well.
My hardware options so far are:
Case: tower
CPU: Sempron X2 (cheap, 50% less energy than Intel/Athlons)
RAM: 16GB (it's dirt cheap anyway)
OS Disk: either 30G+ SSD or 500G Hybrid (more on this later)
Data disks: 3 or 4 TB Green disks (5400RPM)
I am pretty comfy with CLI
I can do either single Arch install to be file server, dev machine etc.
OR
I was thinking on using Arch (or other distro if better) as Xen Dom0 and on top of it have specialised DomUs (Arch of course)
Single install would use SSD variant, while Xen/VMs would sit on 500GB Hybrid drive.
When should I start, what choice shall I make?
Is it insanely difficult to setup & manage Xen/file serving VMs?
Would the Sempron handle Xen + a couple DomUs?
I am willing to get me hands dirty, and learn but at the same time I do not want to spend endless days on setup to realise it's stupid in the first place.
[edit]: Maybe LXC or qemu would fit my bill?
Thank you in advance,
Greg.

Take a look at FreeNAS.  OS goes on CF card.  FreeBSD project.  Might be more appropriate.

  • Running x in a xen domU

    Hey guys, I am trying to configure myself what I would like to consider a poor mans sonos using xbmc and yatse to control it remotely.
    So far, I have managed to install arch as a domu vm and I am passing through a soundcard for obvious purposes.  From there, I have installed the latest xbmc-git, installed  pacman -S xorg-server xorg-server-utils xorg-xinit mesa and because lspci reports an intel video card, I install the intel video drivers.
    From there I am a bit stuck.  I am not sure if a dedicated video card is actually required of not because all I want is music, no video play back is planned currently.
    When I try to configure x, I get an error that say no devices to configure, configuration failed.  This is essentially the message that made me start wondering if I need to do pci pass-through with a dedicated video card.
    My other thought is to try xbmcbuntu, but I figure that would yield the same results as I see no reason that this should not work on arch the way I am trying.

    You can try adding the (unsupported by Oracle) extra RHEL Based Distrobution Repos: "RPM Forge, EPEL, and RPM Fusion" to your server. Just follow the install instructions on the repo sites to add them. I run them on all my 100+ Oracle Linux Servers and Centos and RHEL Servers..  They carry alot of the harder to find rpms that are not in the base distrobution repos.

  • Xen DomU Primary server - Upgrade from 10.3.4 to ZCM 11.2.x

    I have a ZCM 10.3.4 service running on a XEN SLES11-sp1 paravrtualised DomU.
    The ZCM upgrade to 11.2 instructions warn against extracting the ZCM 11.2 iso file and using that as the upgrade source, instead recommending creating a physical DVD and using that as the source.
    As I have a vitualised server I assumed it would be easy to mount the iso as a virtual CD for the guest to use and crack on with the install... but after finding the virt-manager 'add a CD/DVD' option didn't
    give me the results I was hoping for (a nice shiny CD icon on the desktop of the virtual server and a 'there it is!' moment after opening nautilus...) I attempted to follow the SuSE instructions for attaching
    a CD reader Block device. This asks you to attach a device tap:cdrom:/dev/sr0 or file:/path to iso/ zcm112.iso to an unused block device (say xvdb) and then mount the block device to the DomU guest's
    file system (/mnt/xvdb... for example).
    This is great for accessing the data, but to my eyes accessing the DVD's installation files from a mounted directory on the guest server isn't any different to extracting the CD/DVD and trying to run the
    install from the extracted files on a standard physical box.
    Does anyone know why extracting the install iso isn't recommended and more importantly how to upgrade ZCM 10.3 running on a XEN virtual server to 11.2?
    cheers

  • Arch Linux Xen Image

    Has anyone tries making a Xen image of Arch (as a guest OS)?  I want to do it so I can run arch on a xen cluster I have access to, but i'm not sure where to start O.o

    I run Arch on a Linode, not by using their premade image but rather starting from scratch myself.
    Linode provide kernels outside the Xen guests, which made the whole thing quite easy.
    Here's a rough summary of how I managed it:
    1) Install a minimal base Arch system in a virtual machine. I used the FTP iso and Virtualbox.
    As Linode provides kernels, I left out the following packages:
    kernel26, kernel26-firmware, kernel26-headers, grub and all initcpio and klibc packages.
    2) chroot into the new system. Modify fstab to match the Xen disk layout. Configure the network
    interfaces and anything essential to boot.
    3) Exit the chroot, cd into the directory where it resides and tar the entire filesystem up:
    tar -zcpvf filesystem.tar.gz ./
    4) Boot the Xen guest with a livecd of some sorts. Linode provide Finnix.
    5) Mount the Xen disks and copy the filesystem tar to the Xen machine.
    6) Untar the OS:
    tar zxpvf filesystem.tar.gz ./
    7) Restart your Xen guest into the Arch filesystem and configure away.
    I know it's not very detailed, but I did this quite a while back and have just recalled it
    all from memory ^u^
    Good luck!

  • Arch with Xen-server patch

    Okey, here's my problem:
    I want to run Arch with the Xen patch, unfortunatly the latest version if it only supports kernel 2.6.13.x.
    This means that I somehow need to get udev to work with this kernel setup, my problem right now is that downgradeing udev to a version that doesn't require 2.6.15 reaks havoc over my system since it seems the initscripts are not adjusted to handle this. I tried downgradeing udev resulting in a machine that went ballistic whenever I booted it.
    Does anyone have a nice, simple and good solution on how to make Archlinux run with 2.6.13, the Xen patch and a udev version that's satisfactory by todays standards and requirements?
    PS. I heard a rumor about a patch that gave the 2.6.13 kernel the uevent stuff needed for running newer versions of udev, is this just a rumor or is there acctually such a patch? (And ofcourse I've googled around quite abit before I asked here) DS.

    Hi!
    I might have an answer to your problem, but not exactly what you are expecting.
    - I found on xen newsgroups that as soon as the kernel 2.6.16 is available they will update their binary packages, so you can wait for this one to happen.
    - I modified xen-unstable package from AUR, so it compiles Xen kernel 2.6.15 in the process and one does not have to change almost anything (one has to rename /lib/tls to improve Xen performance).
    If you have time give a try to the following package (maintainer is the name of the guy who put it in AUR - don't ask him for help please). As you can see I'm building full kernel with /usr/src/ stuff so one can compile modules for Xen. I have not tested it fully, I compiled it, booted and started creating virtual machine and then went snowboarding and came back last weekend. I give absolutely no warranty that it will work it did for me though:

    I created 2 patches to have usable package. The source code from the xen website builds linux-2.6-xen0 and linux-2.6-xenU which are development kernels - they have almost no modules except for the basic ones. One should build the kernel linux-2.6-xen that can work as xen0 or xenU and has all modules.

  • Install Issue for P6 V7.0 Database Standalone Install

    I am trying to install p6 v7.0 with a database standalone.
    When I click on the setup.exe file on the cd, i am getting the following error:
    1155: documents and settings\ local settings\temp\wz2bb2\p6_v70 Client Application: P6 v7.0.msi not found.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks

    The path looks like a tempory Winzip or WinRAR path. You should first unzip the Installer you downloaded (maybefrom http://edelivery.oracle.com/). Then start the install. I sometimes get some trouble when the path get's too long, so I suggest to unzip to a drive/ first Level folder e.G. c:\P6v7\.

  • What exactly does Arch do with existing partitions at install time?

    Hi there,
    I would like ton install linux on a computer which has already ubuntu and Vista.
    I'd like to keep ubuntu and erase vista altogether.
    My partitions look like this:
    /dev/sda1               1           5       40131   de  Dell Utility
    /dev/sda2   *           6        1918    15360000    7  HPFS/NTFS
    /dev/sda3            1918       12225    82793624+   7  HPFS/NTFS
    /dev/sda4           12225       60802   390191105    5  Extended
    /dev/sda5           12225       59676   381146112   83  Linux
    /dev/sda6           59676       60802     9043968   82  Linux swap / Solaris
    sda2 is also a dell-backup partition of some sort, /sda3 is windows.
    The less intrusive for me would be to keep /sda1 and /sda2 without modifications, install arch on /sda3. I would be nice if I could add /sda6 as arch's swap, and get a dual arch/ubuntu boot.
    Now the question. When I log into the installer, in manually-configure-block-devices, does not show the types of the partitions, says something like "raw data". I chickened out. How should I proceed to only format /sda3, and keep my precious /sda5?
    Thanks!

    No, it does not work, since cfdisk can not handle my partition table:

    You can try to delete partition 3 altogether, then remake it. If that doesn't work things might become more difficult.
    edit: that probably wouldn't work if you can't start cfdisk at all. Manually with "fdisk" from another TTY could work, or using parted, but those are less simple than cfdisk..

    Yeah I know probably going to have to open an SR here but some of you guys around here are pretty sharp. Can I attach the whole install log here somehow?

    Well I am not exactly opposed to udev rules for the powerpath devices ... not that I know what that is exactly ... if this can fix my problem.
    I found an example or two from google ...
    It looks like on my OL 6.2 system there is a difference in the files ( rules I guess ) under /etc/udev/rules.d

  • Arch linux doesn't boot after installing AMD ATI Catalyst

    I have a laptop which has a integrated graphic card intel 4th generation (4600) and an AMD ATI R9 m265x (hybrid Intel/AMD graphics card) so I have just installed AMD ATI Catalyst proprietary ones by following
    AMD Catalyst ArchWiki.
    I have used "Installing from the unofficial repository" method so in my pacman.conf I have added below entry for [catalyst-stable]:
    [catalyst-stable]
    Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/catalyst/$arch
    ## Mirrors, if the primary server does not work or is too slow:
    #Server = http://70.239.162.206/catalyst-mirror/repo/catalyst/$arch
    #Server = http://mirror.rts-informatique.fr/archlinux-catalyst/repo/catalyst/$arch
    #Server = http://mirror.hactar.bz/Vi0L0/catalyst/$arch
    Then I have update pacman's database and install below packages:
    catalyst-hook
    catalyst-utils-pxp
    lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp
    (No need to install catalyst-total-pxp as I have installed catalyst-utils-pxp)
    After installing it, I have configured the driver, configuring X using below command:
    # aticonfig --initial
    In order to use PowerXpress support I have installed catalyst-utils-pxp package plus additional lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp.
    To perform a switch into Intel's IGP I have also installed the mesa-libgl  package and Intel's drivers: xf86-video-intel  and intel-dri .
    I have enable the automatic update by enabling the catalyst-hook.service with below commands since it automatically rebuilds the fglrx modules while the system shuts down or reboots (so I haven't to do it manually each time kernel is updated using Catalyst-generator):
    # systemctl enable catalyst-hook
    # systemctl start catalyst-hook
    And finally I have blacklisted radeon module by creating "/etc/modprobe.d/blacklisted.conf" file which content is:
    blacklist radeon
    and also I have ensured that fglrx line is added in "/etc/modules-load.d/Catalyst.conf" file.
    To avoid problems, I have rebuilt the fglrx module by doing (I know it is not necessary as it is done by catalyst-hook):
    catalyst_build_module all
    Once I reboot, arch linux does not boot. Last lines printed out are below and then it freezes:
    Starting temp files linker to catalyst...
    Starting Catalyst event Daemon...
    [ OK ] Started Catalyst event Daemon
    Starting Catalyst's fglrx kernel' module builder...
    [ OK ] Started temp files linker for catalyst.
    [ OK ] Started Catalyst's fglrx kernel' modue builder.
    [ OK ] Started gnome Display manager.
    [ OK ] Started Network manager.
    [ OK ] Reached target Multi-User system.
    [ OK ] Reached target Graphical Interface.
    [ OK ] Reached target Network.
    I have tried to put nomodeset as a kernel parameter but it does not work. Also, after reading ArchWiki, I have noticed that it is recommended to don't do this as I am using catalyst-utils-pxp because intel driver needs it so I have removed nomodeset parameter from kernel but It continues not working.
    Any ideas?
    Package versions:
    Kernel version 3.17.6-1-ARCH
    catalyst-hook 14.12-1
    catalyst-utils-pxp 14.12-1
    lib32-catalyst-utils-pxp 14.12-1
    xorg-server 1.16.2.901-1
    xf86-video-intel 2.99.916-3

    FInally I managed to boot arch linux.
    I had to downgrade xorg-server from 1.16.2.901-1 to 1.15.2-1.
    It seems there is a problem with Catalyst 14.12-1 and xorg-server 1.16.2.901-1.
    Also I had to replace desktop manager from gdm to lightdm as gdm raises segmentation faults using xorg-server versions 1.16.2.901-1 and 1.15.2-1.
    Finally I had to add an entry in pacman.conf:
    [xorg115]
    Server = http://catalyst.wirephire.com/repo/xorg115/$arch
    ## Mirrors, if the primary server does not work or is too slow:
    #Server = http://mirror.rts-informatique.fr/archlinux-catalyst/repo/xorg115/$arch
    #Server = http://mirror.hactar.bz/Vi0L0/xorg115/$arch
    Then performs following actions:
    1)  # pacman -Syuu catalyst-hook catalyst-utils-pxp
    2) Uninstall all the packages xf86* such as xf86-video-intel, xf86-input-evdev,  xf86-input-synaptics, etc.
    3) Install the packages uninstalled in step 2 and install them again using xorg115 repo, for example, # pacman -S xorg115/xf86-video-intel xorg115/xf86-input-evdev xorg115/xf86-input-synaptics
    I have put a comment here.

  • [SOLVED] Windows/Arch UEFI--kernel panic at bootloader install?

    I've been trying for two days now to get a Windows/Arch dual boot going, UEFI style.   After HOURS of struggle (it's hell being a noob) I managed to get Windows 7 installed UEFI-style from a USB.  Arch install is fine until I get to the step that involves installing a bootloader, and everything turns to crap.
    Some kind of....I don't even know what.  Core dump??  A screen full of numbers & letters!
    With both rEFInd and gummiboot (haven't tried grub yet), I get the same result:
    http://imgur.com/XS6NxzV
    What the heck is going on?!
    Last edited by wilberfan (2014-04-20 02:38:13)

    Just INSTALLING gummiboot causes mass chaos:
    http://imgur.com/VWJNbvD
    There's a whole screen full of "call traces" and stuff...  UNINSTALLING gummiboot generates a metric ton of this stuff, too....
    [edit]  Something is SERIOUSLY borked in my system.  I've now gotten the identical (or very similar) result trying to install gummiboot, rEFInd, AND grub.  Some kind of kernel panic, or something...
    All of that screen verbage going by is WAY above my pay grade at this point...  :-/

  • Standalone install

    Anyone try to install iPS on a standalone machine? Do you need to have DNS
    setup?

    Yes, you can install IPS on a stand alone machine.
    I have an old sparcstation on my desc, running IPS SP3, withouth even beeing
    networked. You must just add a full qulified hostname in the /etc/hosts
    file.

  • Have LR5.7 standalone installed.  Now with LR6 want to install through my CC2014 subscription.  Do I have to uninstall LR5.7 first or will the online CC App install regardless?

    I have tried to install Lightroom through my CC2014 Photoshop subscription before.  Because I have a standalone version - 5.7 - I was unable to successfully install.  If I now want to install so I can get the newest upgrade to LR6, do I need to uninstall my LR 5.7 first?

    LR6 or LR CC 2015 will run side-by-side with your LR 5.x. There is not need to uninstall LR 5.x first.
    You can install the new version as (CC) Trial and later decide if you want to license by CC subscription or as stand-alone.

  • [SOLVED]fresh install of arch 2009.2, but can't install xfce4

    Hello all,
    I'm not new to Linux or any of the *BSD's, been at it for quite a few years. I am new to Arch, though.
    I really like what I've learned about it so far, and really want to embrace it as a main system, but I'm having a hard time getting off the ground. I want to install xfce4, but I keep getting this error:
    xfce4-settings: conflicts with xfce-mcs-manager
    It errors-out immediately. I read about a similar error in this forum, but never really discovered a fix.
    Please help, and much appreciated in advance.

    You could be a little more specific.
    Conflicting packages are:
    libxfce4mcs
    xfce-mcs-manager
    xfce-mcs-plugins
    And some more conflicts in the optional xfce4-goodies group:
    notification-daemon-xfce
    xfce4-screenshooter-plugin
    xfce4-xmms-plugin
    Those packages should be ignored for a successful XFCE 4.6 installation.

  • How do I tell Arch/pacman that I have Java installed?

    Since Sun JDK is removed and I have had to install it manually, how can I tell Arch/pacman that I have Java runtime installed and stop pacman from dragging in OpenJDK when installing a java app?

    Then just create an empty package which is called jdk.
    pkgname=jdk
    pkgver=7
    pkgrel=3
    pkgdesc="The Java Development Kit"
    url=http://jdk7.java.net/
    arch=(i686 x86_64)
    license=(custom)
    provides=('java-environment=7')
    conflicts=('java-environment')
    package(){
    /bin/true
    or http://codepad.org/I50Qx8fT
    But remember, doing something like that, you are responsible if things break. Because e.g. if you forget about all this and ask people here for help, this might get very ... a big waste of time

  • 10.1.3.2 and OC4J Standalone Install

    Hello all.
    It is great to see that JDeveloper 10.1.3.2 is available!!! I am curious as to the timeline for 10.1.3.2 App Server / Standalone?
    If I develop an app in this version, I am of course going to need a container to deploy to. So, a timeline would be great! Or, is there a way to take the embedded OC4J and redeploy it as a standalone installation?
    Thanks,
