Arch does not boot (MacBook Pro, rEFIt)

Several months ago I installed Arch on my MacBookPro (5.1, late 2008) in dual boot with Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion).
Everything was fine until last Friday when, after a forced shutdown, ArchLinux refused to boot and showed me a black screen instead (I use rEFIt).
I followed several forum suggestions, mainly consisting in the reflagging of the boot partition (using both fdisk in Mac OS X and parted in Linux) and in the reinstallation of GRUB. After some work, nothing changed: Mac OS X works fine, whilst Linux still offers me a black screen. After few seconds of black screen, the laptop reboots, and rEFIt shows me the same options.
Does anyone have any suggestion?
Thank in advance for any help I can get
Alessia

Finally, the rEFInd menu shows up again. This is the same behaviour showed by rEFIt and the reason because I used stanzas.
That description indicates that you were launching a BIOS-mode version of GRUB, and that it failed for some reason that's almost certainly GRUB-specific (bad configuration file, missing modules, etc.).
After playing with the EFI shell I was able of fixing the Arch stanza, finally finding an error that should be expected:
Starting vm-linuz-linux
Using load options root=UUID=e6db22f2-e5bb-4933-bba7-20be86db00if ro quiet initrd=initramfs-linux.img
Error: Unsupported while loading vmlinuz-linux
In fact, I'm using a 32-bit version of Arch on a 64-bit EFI.
That's the problem, then. On a 64-bit EFI, rEFInd can launch 64-bit kernels but not 32-bit kernels.
I’m currently trying to fix my hybrid MBR, but despite all my efforts with the gdisk and the gptsync (in rEFInd) tools I always end up with the behaviour described in the first lines of this post: “Grub loading...”, black screen, then rEFInd menu again
I'm not sure what's wrong with that, but I can say with some certainty that it's a GRUB issue. (That's not to say that the solution is in the GRUB configuration; adjusting the hybrid MBR might fix it, but I'm not sure precisely what to suggest.)
I have no idea about how to proceed. Perhaps (re)installing the 64-bit version of Arch is the only possible solution, but I’m scared by all the painful configuration steps that will follow a fresh installation...
As you suspect, installing a 64-bit version of Arch should fix the problem. For that matter, a 64-bit kernel with 32-bit userland should work OK, although that might be tricky to maintain -- I imagine that pacman would try to "upgrade" you to new 32-bit kernels every now and then. Still, it might be worth giving it a try. If you do, I recommend installing a kernel, initrd file, and kernel modules (in /lib/modules) outside of pacman. Install a kernel that's slightly behind whatever is current in pacman. That way, even if pacman upgrades your kernel, your 64-bit kernel will be untouched. You can then upgrade your kernel manually whenever it's convenient or desirable to do so.
Another option is to install a 64-bit version of EFI-mode GRUB, ELILO, or SYSLINUX, and have it launch a 32-bit kernel. I know this is possible because I've done it in some test installations, but I don't recall offhand which boot loader I used, so I can't promise that all three of the ones I mentioned would work. If you go this route, you'll end up with rEFInd to select OS X or GRUB/ELILO/SYSLINUX, which you can then use to select your Linux kernel (or set a very short timeout to launch the kernel more-or-less immediately). See my Web page on EFI boot loaders for Linux for my thoughts on each of these boot loaders.

does any have issues after installing osx 10.8.4??? because i have an issue after i update my macbook pro late 2011 ,it doesn't start and only stay on the mac logo and appears the pointer i restarted many times and does not work the only option i had is to reinstall the osx 10.8.3. can anybody help me with this issue?? thank you.

Reinstalling Lion/Mountain Lion Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

• IMac does not recognize MacBook Pro over wireless network

Hi,
I have an iMac running MAC OS X version 10.5.7. It is connected to the Internet via an Airport Extreme Base Station. I just bought a 13-in MacBook Pro that runs the same version of MAC OS X. I connect it to the same wireless network. The MacBook Pro recognizes the iMac (there is an icon of the iMac in the Shared Section of the Finder window). The iMac, however, does not recognize the MacBook Pro. If you have come across this problem and have a solution, I would be most grateful for your advice.
Regards,
MTL

I'm having a similar problem with an Intel iMac and a G4 iBook (both running Leopard 10.5.7) since the recent replacement of the iMac's hard drive. Occasionally the iMac will 'see' and allow me to connect to the laptop, but often the connection just drops out, and then I can't find the iBook any more. The iBook, on the other hand, can't detect the iMac at all. I know I have all the settings right - before the HD replacement, everything worked fine in both directions. Interestingly, in the 'WINS' settings in network preferences, the iMac's 'name' bears no relation (just a list of numbers and letters) to the computer's actual name, while the iBook uses the first word of its own name. It's frustrating, as I have to synchronise my work between the two on a daily basis. I can't get them to connect via ethernet cable either.

• The thunderbolt display does not charge macbook pro,

there is a magnetic adapter for the power cord...do I need to find a new cord for the display or is there a problem with the mac book pro?

The Thunderbolt Display has two cables to connect to the MacBook Pro.
The first is the Thunderbolt cable, identified by the lightening bolt on the connection. This carries data to the display for either passing through to other devices connected to the display (in this way, the display unit also acts as a hub for other devices (USB, Thunderbolt or maybe FireWire), or to the display unit to put on the screen. This cable does NOT charge the MacBook
The second is the power cable. The current version of the display (as of April 2013) contains the power cable to connect to the older type of MagSafe connections on the MacBook, and an adaptor to connect to the newer MacBook's (MacBook Air and MacBook Pro Retina). You have to (of course) use the the adaptor or not depending on how old the MacBook is. It is an akward thing, but you have to use the adaptor for the newer Macs and not for the older Macs (sounds backwards, but that is the way it is).
The older versions of the display (mid 2012) do not come with the adaptor and you have to buy one if you have a newer Mac. Or you can continue to use the power brick that came with the Mac.
Soon, (hopefully - but not soon enough IMHO) Apple will release a new version of the display which will (in addition to being thinner, lighter, use less power, etc.) will contain a power cord that will fit right into the newer Macs and you will need an adaptor if you have an older Mac.
Sounds kind of confusing, but if the power cable from the Thunderbolt does not fit your Mac, you have to use an adaptor.

• Help! Arch does not boot after crash.

I'm so frustrated, I was just using my laptop like normal and I walked away from it for 2 minutes and when I got back it had turned itself off. I pushed the power and now when arch boots it gets as far as "INIT: Entering runlevel: 3" and after that it just hangs. This is extremely annoying because I can't do anything at all, it doesn't respond to any keys I press or anything, it just hangs there. I booted up to my ubuntu partition and got online to research my problem and I found that my inittab file had gone completely missing! I can't really think of any reason why this would happen, but it just vanished. Maybe it had to do with the fact that I upgraded earlier in the day (much earlier than the crash though)?
So what I ended up doing is taking the inittab skottish posted here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=90539 and trying it, but no luck I get the same results. So then I tried reinstalling initscripts using the method described here http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php? … 06#p694906 but that didn't do me any good either. I have no idea where to go from here, if there are any logs or other files I can post that will help you help me get this sorted out I will be happy to oblige. I would really like to be able to use my arch partition again, it had quickly become my favorite .
Thanks so much, I really appreciate any help I can get,
Nate

• [SOLVED] Arch does not start into gnome desktop

I installed arch from the scratch into a new hard drive due to a disk failure in the old one. After installing it, I booted into gnome3 desktop without problems.
Today I have upgraded it by performing:
#pacman -Syu
and also I have installed some other no important packages mplayer, banshee, etc... also I have seen that my kernel has been upgraded into 3.11.4-1-ARCH fro 3.10.10-1-ARCH.
After rebooting, my arch does not boot, even in fallback mode. It starts cleaning blocks from the partitions, and then after it is done, cursor is blinking and no other messages are printed out. It stays with cursor blinking forever. I have a GUID Partition table and a LVM2 where all paritions are made.
I can log in into console by pressing CTRL+ALT+F2. Once I have prompted I have no network interfaces, only lo (loopback). If I do:
#ip link show
#ip addr list
I only get lo (loopback) interface listed, others like wifi and ethernet cable does not appear.
If I perform below:
#journalctl -xn
I do not see any problematic message, only this one:
Failed to open private bus connection
Any ideas why arch is not booting and get into gnome session (login window)?
UPDATED:
The problem is that once I have performed the full system update with:
#pacman -Syu
My kernel images has been upgraded and successfully generated into 3.11.4-1-ARCH but I have seen that my kernel, after log in to console and performing:
$uname -r
it says kernel version continues being 3.10.10-1-ARCH so at startup images genereated into 3.11.4-1-ARCH do not match so cursor remains blinking forever....
I am trying to update the kernel but now I have no internet connection, no network interfaces are shown.... so how to do this now? chrooting?

ewaller wrote:Check the output of uname -a and of pacman -Qi linux and ensure that the versions match. If they don't, you are somehow starting using the wrong kernel and it cannot find its modules.
You are right, see my updated post, for some reason image were successfully generated into 3.11.4-1-ARCH but kernel has not been updated and it remains in 3.10.10-1-ARCH.... so they do not match and arch does not boot.... so cursor remains blinking forever....

• Macbook pro does not boot after upgrading ram

I have a macbook pro late 2011 which runs with mavericks operating system . I have tried to upgrade my macbook to 8Gb. Macbook does not boot when the two ram slots are filled with 4GB ram but runs well when the slots are filled with 2GB ram. When i try them individually with one slot of 2GB ram and another slot with 4GB they run perfectly which shows status ok in the RAM info. What could be the problem .

Around here, most of us recommend only Crucial and OWC for RAM because it's guaranteed to work with Macs and it's what most of us have. If I were you, I would return the RAM and look at purchasing RAM from either Crucial or OWC. If you can't get their RAM to work then you'll know that there's some trouble with your actual slots.
Good luck,
Clinton

• Macbook pro snow leopard 10.6.3 does not boot up. I get a grey screen and a pop up to restart computer

Snow leopard 10.6.3 does not boot up. Macbook pro. When I push the start button I hear a chime and then the apple logo shows up and the spinnings circle. In a little while a grey screen comes on and after that a pop up telling me to shut down and restart my computer.I have done that andit still does not work. How do I fix it.?
richardfromfort pierce

richardfromfortpierce,
do you or don’t you have your MacBook Pro’s original grey installation DVDs?
If your MacBook Pro is a 2007 model, then Mac OS X 10.6.3 was not installed onto your MacBook Pro from its grey installation DVDs, but rather from a white Snow Leopard DVD. The white Snow Leopard DVD does not have any Apple Hardware Test; to run your Apple Hardware Test, you will need the grey installation DVDs which originally came with your MacBook Pro when it was new. If you no longer have those grey discs, you can contact Apple directly and purchase a replacement pair. (They’re not available in the Apple stores.)

• MacBook Pro with Mavericks OS does not boot

I have old macbook pro 2009. I upgraded the OS to Mavericks some months ago. It was running nicely till yesterday when electricity cut & there is no battery. I tried to restart it again but it does not boot. When I press the power button. It lights up & gives the starting tone, then a progress bar appears it takes about 20 minutes for the progress bar to complete. After the progress bar is completed, the computer shuts down.
I tried to press the option key during boot. I got some options: time machine ... Disk utility. I pressed on Disk utility. Disk was verified, it was ok. I tried to boot from external disc I previously prepared by ccc (carbon copy cloner) but ccc does not appear in the items of Disk utilities. Restore also failed. Now, I am downloading a OS X Mavericks which will take some hours. Would it be helpful or I need to do something else?

Hey Hisham Khalaf,
Thanks for the question. I understand that you are experiencing issues with your MacBook Pro booting up. The following resource provides troubleshooting steps for a related symptom, and may lead to a solution for your issue:

• Deleted files now Macbook pro 13 2011 does not boot up

Tried following some instructions to delete search.genieo an safari and deleted some files. Now my Macbook pro 13 does not boot up at all. All I see is the screen with small apple and the running circle below indicating it is thinking. any clues anyone. Thxs

Just for the record, in case someone with the same problem stumbles across this topic later, I'll repeat the advice I gave you on another topic:
You did not follow the instructions precisely, and now you have suffered the fate that the giant red text on that page warned you about.
At this point, you will need to try the recovery instructions posted at the end of that page.

• 1st-gen Mac Pro does not boot in any way, not even in safe mode

I have a 1st-generation Mac Pro with the graphics card upgraded to NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT; running 10.7.2. I have had no problems with the machine since I bought it in May 2007... until now. Specifically, the machine suddenly became non-responsive, froze (I do not remember this ever happening before), so I had to power it down and restart. After that, the machine does not boot in any way: does not start up with the Option key; no FireWire target mode; does not start up even in the safe mode. All I get when I power the machine up is the folllowing endless loop: (1) the display unit (30" Apple Cinema Display) waking up from sleep (white light going off) and (2) a flicker of white on the display while the optical drive sounds like checking for any inserted media... then again the display going to sleep for a few seconds and steps (1) and (2).
I could really use help here. Thank you in advance.

Linc:
I am also sure it is a hardware fault. I have tried to run the Apple Hardware Test from the orginal system disc: I opened the optical drive tray with a paper clip, inserted the disc and powered up the machine. However the machine only spinned up the disc, turned the display to standby, spinned up and standby, etc.
What kind of hardware fault could it be?
(1) the display unit (30" Apple CInema Display) -- I presume unlikely, since the computer should boot even with a defunct display unit or no display unit at all, for that matter;
(2) the graphics card
or
(3) the logic board?

As Tom said the FCS forum is the better place to post the question.
Here is Apple's best practices doc for installing both on the same system.
BTW, FCP7 is part of the FCS 3 suite of apps.
