Arch from hdd to usb-stick?

Hi all.
After installing and playing with Arch on a normal desktop computer I have the required functionality and it work very well. But i'm struggling with how i should make the USB stick based on the installation i already have.
root ~ # df -h
Filesystem      Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on
rootfs           15G  1.9G   12G  14% /
dev             2.0G     0  2.0G   0% /dev
run             2.0G  264K  2.0G   1% /run
/dev/sda2        15G  1.9G   12G  14% /
shm             2.0G     0  2.0G   0% /dev/shm
tmpfs           2.0G  4.0K  2.0G   1% /tmp
/dev/sda4       442G  222M  420G   1% /home
/dev/sda1       471M   30M  417M   7% /boot
this should fit on a 4gb USB disk without any problems. I dont think there is any reason to use more than one partition on the usb-stick so my plan was to rsync the root of my hdd to the USB stick, update the fstab, chroot to the usbstick and reinstall syslinux. But i cant get this to work.
So how would you make a live-usb-stick from an existing installation?

thank you, you guys rock! brain0 was spot on, I had forgotten the mkinitcpio stuff! Now everything works.
I didn't use the UUID format, and used the /dev/sda1 instead, but thats easy to change. i was of the impression that the UUID was tied to the hardware device, but is it actually just the filesystem? So if i dd the usb-stick to another stick the UUID will still be correct?
(and then i forgot to push the submit button, so in the meantime i found the documentation in the arch wiki. UUID is the identifier for the file-system so I guess moving it to different hardware shouldn't be a problem)
For future reference:
fdisk <blablabla>
mkfs.ext4 /dev/sdX1
mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/dest
rsync -avP /home/usb_backup1/ /mnt/dest/
lsblk -f
vim /mnt/dest/etc/fstab
mount -t proc none /mnt/dest/proc
mount --rbind /dev /mnt/dest/dev
mount --rbind /sys /mnt/dest/sys
mount --rbind /run /mnt/dest/run
mount --rbind /tmp /mnt/dest/tmp
chroot /mnt/dest /bin/bash
source /etc/profile
vim /etc/mkinitcpio.conf
mkinitcpio -p linux
syslinux-install_update -ami
vim /boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg
reboot
boot into USB device

My Elitebook 8460p boots perfectly normally from HDD but will ONLY boot from two specific USB sticks - 1. A Windows Recovery USB and 2. A Parted Magic USB stick which is a commercial partition recovery/imaging utility - it will NOT boot from ANY OTHER USB stick at all. It'll boot from a CD/DVD. What I would like to know is why it won't boot from any other bootable USB stick at all other than those two?

That is because the other usb sticks you have tried have not been made properly bootable. Check the partition type on the sticks that work. Do they have a uefi partition or are they just MBR partitions that are active? Use Windows own disk management snapin to investigate the usb sticks.

  • Cloning OS2 HDD to USB stick hangs at a file with the same name ???

    Hi,
I'm dragging my MacIntosh HD icon to a large USB stick in order to clone it because I'm going to install OS X Tiger onty my iMac G3/400 DV SE. The copying initiates, it starts, and after a few hundreds of MB's a small window pops up with this remark (translated from Dutch) :
" The file XXXXX cannot be copied because another file with the same name exists already." The window has two buttons : STOP and Continue. No matter which button I click, the process stops and I'm left with a few hundred MB on my USB stick. Deleting the "double" file doesn't help because a few minutes later another one pops up.
How is this possible? The USB stick is completely empty! Can anybody tell me what's going on and how to stop this, otherwise I'll never be able to clone the HDD.
    Thanks for your kind information,
    Paul

It was a bug in Classic OS, which was manifest in certain circumstances. My workaround was, at that time, to isolate the rascal (was possible, like in your case), eliminate it, then add it later.
Such events may occurs with Mac OS X files too, I cannot figure out why. One or two apps in my software archive usually do that.
another workaround it to archive it (.zip now, .sit in classic Mac OS), check whether applicable.

  • Can't boot Arch for installation. USB stick issue.

I got stuck. I tried to install arch on my dekstop, but booting Arch from USB stick freezes in same point, after running hooks. I tried with two usb sticks, new iso etc. Ubuntu was installed before without any problem from the same stick.
    It freezes after showing:
    Waiting 30 seconds for device /dev/disk/by-label/ARCH_201108 ...
[4.053579] sd 12:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page present

[4.056259] sd 12:0:0:0: [sdb] No Caching mode page present
[4.059035] sd 12:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write through
In some attempts I also got this:
    ata_id[12376]: HDIO_GET_IDENTITY failed for '/dev/sdb': Invalid argument

Problem is sovled, but the solution is really courious.
In fact, there was no issue with usb stick. Display freezes on first showed lines and does not follow the rest. Arch booted successfully but I cannot notice that, because I still see first lines (messages from first post were just warnings). Switching FullHD, 16:9 monitor to old 3:4 display solved the problem.
It's really strange. Should I report it somewhere?

  • Running Arch from a live USB with persistence, on an intel Atom tablet

    Hello,
I may have bitten off more than I can chew here. I am not a noob to linux, but I am a noob to Arch. I have found a few resources around but none of them quite match with what I want to do, and as such I don't want to overcomplicate what I'm doing by following instructions geared towards other objectives (such as performing a full install on a tablet).
The title I think captures it, but I will just state again what it is I want to do in a little bit more detail. I have a 2-in-1 tablet (an acer switch 10, if anybody cares) with an intel Atom processor which runs windows 8.1. I don't want to install Arch linux to the tablet, but rather have a USB with persistence that I can just plug in when I want to boot into Arch rather than windows. I've done this with several linux distros on my standard laptop, but never with Arch and never to run on a tablet. Unfortunately, I think this is made harder than it needs to be by the fact that I don't have a functioning normal laptop at the moment - if I did I would simply do all of this on there, from a linux distro. But as it happens, I only have this tablet, and it is only running windows.
I created the live USB using the software Rufus, and it boots correctly on my friend's laptop, however I have been having trouble getting it to boot from my tablet. There seem to be several things in the way of this, and I am slowly making my way through them. Firstly, I have disabled secure boot, and placed a UEFI 32-bit bootloader into the appropriate folder on the USB drive. So far this has only allowed me to avoid the automatic boot into windows that I don't experience on a normal laptop, instead taking me to the bootloader, but I don't yet know what to do from there.
So, this probably isn't entirely relevant or specific to Arch, but since I am using Arch I thought I would post this here (since more Arch specific stuff might come up as I get further). If anybody has any insight to help me out, that would be great. Otherwise, I will just continue and post any progress I have made here, and maybe this will help the 5 other people in the world who are trying to install Arch to a live USB, from windows, using only an atom-CPU tablet .

SUCCESS! Just loaded up flash media encoder and connected to
one of my flash streaming servers. The little 9" laptop handled it
beautifully. This is on the battery, wireless internet. I did
notice one thing though, I set the FPS to 30, and the highest it
would go was 15-16. Not sure if its throttling the fps because of
battery power, the ~36mbps wireless connection or what, but I'm
happy with the results! I'll try again on the battery and plugged
into the gigabit eithernet we have here at the office and report
the results. Check out the images.
The specs of the laptop are:
    Dell Inspiron 9"
    Windows XP Pro SP3
    Intel® Atom Processor® N270 (1.6GHz/533Mhz FSB/512K
    cache)
    1gb ram

  • HT5639 Can I install Win7 32-bit from a bootable USB-Stick on iMac using Boot Camp?

I would like to run Win7 32-bit on my iMac 8,1.
    I have a bootable USB-Stick to install Win7.
Does Boot Camp support the installation from USB-Stick?
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
You can only install Windows from a USB drive in one of these Macs:
    - MacBook Pro with Retina display.
    - MacBook Air.
    - Mac mini (Mid 2010 and newer).
    - iMac (Late 2012).
As you don't have any of those Macs, you have to install Windows through a DVD. Also, the only iMac that can install Windows using a USB drive only supports a 64-bit Windows 7 and 8 version with Boot Camp

  • Can one run CVI from CD or USB stick?

We have sent a CVI app to the client and it runs for about 3 hours and then crashes.  He woudl like us to debug this app
I would to Debug the clients CVI Application on the clients system yet not leave the CVI development system there.   They system is windows 7 32 bit.  The ideal would be to create a CD where i can run the IDE/debugger.   The second choice would be to run it from a USB stick.  Any suggestions on how to do this?

On one hand you do not need to activate CVI after installing it to the customer machine: you can simply run it as evaluation version and debug your project in the IDE. Next you will need to copy back the project files to a development machine to create the executable.
On the other hand, you could use remote debugging facility to debug the application without installing anything on the customer machine. Take a look also to this tutorial and to this tip from ebalci.
Proud to use LW/CVI from 3.1 on.

  • Capture/Import from HDD JVC USB camera?

I'm new to the HDD cameras. I've got a friends JVC HDD Everio camcorder. It also says mini SD on it for what that's worth.
I've looked into the Log and Transfer method, when I open that up I don't see any video coming into the browser. The camera is mounted on my desktop. When I navigate to that in the Log and Transfer browser it says that there are no supported files?
Does that mean I can't use FCE 4 to capture these video files. iMovie sees the video clips fine. But my movie project is in FCE 4 and I'd like to stay away from iMovie if I can.
Please help or steer me where I can find the help. Thanks!

Tom, it's an honor to have you devote some time to my question!
I'm trying to find a model number: I think the serial number is GZ-MG360BU if that helps. I just did a search on that number and google pulled up the right product at best buy. That might give you more info.
I don't see anything indicating that it's true HD. I think my friends think that because the camera has HDD all over it. I see Micro SD HC. I'm not sure what that means as far as the type of video this thing produces.
To throw in another question, I'm going to be in the market for a new camcorder. I've been using a now obsolete miniDV camcorder. I like using tapes and capturing via fire wire. Is there any advantage to these HDD camcorders? If i'm going to stick to tape, what recommendations do you have for compatibility with FCE 4? I guess I should add that I'd like to go true HD affordably.
    Thanks again!

  • [SOLVED] Install Arch Linux on USB Stick!

So, here is the deal. I want to install Arch Linux on a USB Stick so I can plug it at any computer and have my system... with me
I've had a little bit experience with Arch so I know a few things about it... used it for a few months before on a real system.
My USB stick is a HighSpeed 17-20 MBPS and it's 16 GB capacity.
So how do I do it?

I'm using occasionally Arch installed on HDD-USB, I've just added usb hook to mkinitcpio.conf and removed autodetect (more modules=more hardware supported). So far it worked on 3 different computers (all of them have one main HDD so no grub issues, but it's no biggie if it doesn't boot right away, you can always edit grub on-the-fly by pressing "e")
About USB stick: installing on USB stick is not the same as running it in LIVE mode! Consider yourself warned.
If you just install it you really should read about SSD optimizations because USB flash cells also have limited read/write cycles (actually is less robust and sophisticated than SSD). Something to look at: noatime mount option, disable swap if not necessary, profile-sync-daemon and so on...
1lj4z1 wrote:Well I don't need to chroot, i am running it live. I'll see about mkinitcpio.conf but I can't understand what you mean rebuilding initramfs? What is that exactcly?
It means if you fiddle with mkinitcpio you should run:
    # mkinitcpio -p linux
afterwards or bad things will happen
