Archivelog RMAN backup
In my database I have configured rman backup.
when i use the following command to perform archivelogs backup, it delete all archive logs after the backup. I want to keep 3 days retention on my server after completion of archivelog all backup. Can any one guide me pls.
backup archivelog all delete input format 'ARC_%d_%s_%p.bks' ;
If you use delete input command then it will take the backup of your available archivelogs and delete them from the archive destination. Just exclude the delete input command and try again.
backup format '/oracle/rman_backup/RMAN_ARCH_SMS<%s:%t:%p>.bkp' archivelog all;
Also, connect into RMAN prompt and to keep retention of 3 days run the command.
RMAN > CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 3 DAYS;
RMAN > show all;

Why does my archivelog RMAN backups end up in ORACLE_HOME/dbs ?
DB version: 11.2
Platform: Solaris 10
I have noticed that , rman backup pieces containing archivelogs end up in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs directory despite using format parameter. This happened for both Level 0 AND Level 1 backups.
I know that backup files end up in $ORACLE_HOME/dbs when you forget to specify FORMAT. But FORMAT is included in my Level0 and Level 1 Scripts as shown below. Is there anything else wrong with my L0 and L1 scripts ?
Following are my Level0 and Level 1 backup scripts
-- Level0
run
allocate channel LEVEL0_TBLQA device type disk;
crosscheck backup;
delete noprompt obsolete;
backup as backupset incremental level 0 database format='/u04/dbfiles/RMAN_bkp/tblqa/TBLQA_full_%U_%T.bkp' plus archivelog delete input;
release channel LEVEL0_TBLQA;
}--- Level 1
run {
backup as compressed backupset incremental level 1 database format='/u04/dbfiles/RMAN_bkp/tblqa/TBLQA_L1_%U_%T.bkp' plus archivelog delete all input;
}This DB is using control file as catalog.backup as backupset incremental level 0 database format='/u04/dbfiles/RMAN_bkp/tblqa/TBLQA_full_%U_%T.bkp' plus archivelog delete input;
backup as compressed backupset incremental level 1 database format='/u04/dbfiles/RMAN_bkp/tblqa/TBLQA_L1_%U_%T.bkp' plus archivelog delete all input;This is because, the format you have specified stands good only till the backup of database (backup as compressed backupset incremental level 1 database format ".....") and not for the archive log in your script. Hence, the archivelog backups get stored in the $ORACLE_HOME/dbs location and the database backup gets stored in the format location you have mentioned in your RMAN script.
Instead you can use as below:
run
allocate channel LEVEL0_TBLQA device type disk format '/u04/dbfiles/RMAN_bkp/tblqa/TBLQA_full_%U_%T.bkp';
crosscheck backup;
delete noprompt obsolete;
backup as backupset incremental level 0 database plus archivelog delete input;
release channel LEVEL0_TBLQA; -
Taking daily rman backup of archivelogs
Hi,
Technical info:
OS: Windows 2003 EE
DB: Oracle 10g EE v. 10.2.0.3
DB size: 30 GB
I need help to create a rman script or suggestions for creating a Job in Grid Control.
I want to take a daily (monday to friday) rman backup of archivelogs in the time interval 9 AM to 5 PM. The script should be run every 2 hours. I want the script to remove the archivelogs that are older than 4 days. The retention policy is 9 days.
Any suggestions will be very much appreciated.Hi,
Yes, I have realized that I can create different jobs in Grid Control one for each day and each time: for example: at 9 AM, 11 AM, etc until 5 PM.
Each job performs a backup archivelog and removes those backups that are older than 4 days.
But I have to create 25 jobs (5 jobs for each day).
Is there a simpler way to achieve the same result? -
RMAN backup with archivelogs.
Dear all,
Can i delete all archivels after the RMAN backup. Why do we backup archivelogs with RMAN backup. I think it is useless.
Please can somebody explane this.

upul indikaWhy do we backup archivelogs with RMAN backup. I
think it is useless. You think backing up archivelogs is useless ? Did you ever recover a database ? Did you ever simulate a disaster recovery ? If yes, how did you do it ? If not, then you should have a look at the documentation
Anyway, you can (or even you should) delete archivelogs after the RMAN backup. -

Issue is archivelogs backup is going fine ,But when we go for datafile backup its hanging there from oracle side as not able to give file handle.

Archivelog files and Rman backup
Hi all,
Please somebody guide me regarding the following concept.
We have the oracle server version 10.2.0.1.0, working with Windows OS,
I had set the parameter log_archive_dest_1 for locating archivelog files, then I had changed the archivelog files to the flash recovery area(located in another disk) by using the parameters db_recovery_file_dest_size and db_recovery_file_dest.
Now the archivelog files are being located at two different location. At this point, If I take backup for archivelog files with the aid of RMAN, then ,
How will the RMAN take backup from those two different locations?
Thanks&Regards,
Jai.PROBLEM :
I have archivelogs duplexed - when running RMAN - rman backups up the archivelogs from both duplexed destinations - from the user manual - this should not be the case, any ideas?
Details:
I have archivelogs duplexed
I have the following set in rman :
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 2 DAYS;
CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON;
CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK;
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '/backup/rman/WPPMD/control_%F';
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE 'SBT_TAPE' PARALLELISM 10 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET;
CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '/backup/rman/WPPMD/backup_%d_%T_%U' MAXPIECESIZE 10 G;
CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION FOR DATABASE OFF; # default
CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION ALGORITHM 'AES128'; # default
CONFIGURE COMPRESSION ALGORITHM 'LOW' AS OF RELEASE 'DEFAULT' OPTIMIZE FOR LOAD TRUE;
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO BACKED UP 1 TIMES TO DISK;
CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/dbhome_1/dbs/snapcf_WPPMD.f'; # default
When I run backups via a script :
backup incremental level=$RMAN_LEVEL database plus archivelog;
($RMAN_LEVEL changes between 0 and 1 depending on the day of the week)
It backs both duplex copies of the same archivelog
From the document :
Oracle10g / 11g - Getting Started with Recovery Manager (RMAN) [ID 360416.1]
It says :
Even if your redo logs are being archived to multiple destinations and you use RMAN to back up archived redo logs,
RMAN selects only one copy of the archived redo log file to include in the backup set. (Since logs with the same log sequence number are identical, there is no need to include more than one copy.)
But this is not the case ie
RMAN> list archivelog sequence 2445;
using target database control file instead of recovery catalog
List of Archived Log Copies for database with db_unique_name WPPMD
=====================================================================
Key Thrd Seq S Low Time
4640 1 2445 A 17-DEC-10
Name: /log/recovery_area/WPPMD/archivelog2/1_2445_735315419.dbf
4639 1 2445 A 17-DEC-10
Name: /log/recovery_area/WPPMD/archivelog/2010_12_17/o1_mf_1_2445_6jpx9n7c_.arc
So it still backing up both copies of the archive log.
Any ideas? is this a bug?
Thanks
Luca

Got RMAN error when running RMAN backup of archivelogs on physical standby database
Got below error when running RMAN backup of datafiles and archivelogs on physical standby database.
RMAN-06820: WARNING: failed to archive current log at primary database
ORACLE error from target database:
ORA-17629: Cannot connect to the remote database server
ORA-17627: ORA-00942: table or view does not exist
Could anyone help me? Thanks,Hello;
When you connect RMAN to the source database as TARGET you must specify a password even if RMAN uses operating system authentication.
So the errors ORA-17627 and ORA-00942 appear to be cause and effect.
What version of Oracle? ( 11.2.0.4 according to the tag )
Can you post your backup script?
Best Regards

RMAN-06820: WARNING: failed to archive current log at primary database
Cause: An attempt to switch the archived log at the primary database failed.
So I would check my Primary alert log for an issue.

Regarding RMAN backup and recovery using archivelogs during cloning process
Hi there,
We are running 9i database (RAC) in archivelog mode.We are in the process of cloning DEVELOPMENT database using our PRODUCTION database.
For this we planned to take RMAN backup by keeping the production database in MOUNT stage.
In this regard, will it be possible to make use of archivelogs generated during and after this backup (in mount stage), after some days during recovery time, if it asks for recovery after cloning process.
Thanks,
Balu.Hi Alok,
why there is a need for standby here? you mean to say standby db?
what i exactly need is , whether i will be making use of archivelogs which are all archived during that backup period (in mount stage) after some days, if i face any problem with the PRODUCTION Database.. -
Rman backup with a missing archivelog.
hello,
I backed my database up yesterday after you guys helped me fix few problems I had on it. I used RMAN with the following command in a run block:
*run {*
allocate channel t1 type disk;
backup current controlfile ;
backup database;
backup archivelog all delete input;
release channel c1;
At the end of the operation, RMAN indicates that and archivelog is missing and it couldn't find it. As a result, recover operation can be compromised. Now am confused because I do not know whether the command executed successfully or not and how to fix the missing archivelog.
Below is the entire output of the operation along with error message:

The first 3 instructions of the run block executed successfully, but
the last one didn't. Is that so?
Whatever the understanding, do I have a backup? WHat can I do to have a consistent backup?
Thanks in advance.Adomi,
It is sad to see you are still running RMAN in 8i fashion where you are on 10g.
The script is bs, sorry
run {
allocate channel t1 type disk; -- not required
backup current controlfile ; -- not required, as this is already done by backup database
backup database;
backup archivelog all delete input;
release channel c1; -- not required.
If you have controlfile autobackup on, you could just
backup database plus archivelog
and be done with it.
As you didn't make a RMAN backup from the start, your backup archivelog statement should have read
backup archivelog all skip inaccessible delete input;
Once that succeeds Oracle shouldn't need the archivelog anymore, and you should make a second backup without the skip inaccessible clause.

Rman backup with archivelog from tape
Hi,
We are doing a level 0 backup on sunday and then level1 backup on all the weekdays.
The archive logs generated are 1GB each and are more in number.
IF we include archivelog in level1 backup , its taking around 12hrs to complete.
So we are thinking of not including the archivelog in level 1 backup,but then we can daily move the archive logs to another location .
So archivelogs will not be in the rman backup.
So in case of restore, how can we apply the archive logs required? rman will not identify the archive logs...how can we manually apply the required archive logs
Please helpInformation about ArchiveLogs is available in the controlfile as I outlined in my response post in the thread How to find out which archived logs needed to recover a hot backup?
However, if your CONTROLFILE_RECORD_KEEP_TIME is 7 days and you are attempting a restore of a backup 14 days or 28 days or 35 days old ... you may be out of luck.
You'd need to maintain a listing of ArchiveLogs in some manner (e.g. a log file outside the database that you periodically update with information about ArchiveLogs).
It is much better to also backup the ArchiveLogs using RMAN. Don't forget to ensure that controlfile backups or autobackups are also taken and retained.

Hi
I've just setup RMAN on Oracle 11g within a two node cluster environment.
I have completed the following:
* Created a recovery catalog
* Registed Database
* Configured retention policy window of 7 days
* Configured default device type to disk
* configured controlfile autobackup on;
* configured device type disk backup type to compressed backupset
* configured channel device type disk format
* validated database

Unable to restore and recover my Database from RMAN Backup
Dear All,
Iam practicing RMAN in Windows environment.
My configurations are
CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1; # default
CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON; # default
CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON; # default
CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 'F:\Backup\%F'; # default
CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1 BACKUP TYPE TO BACKUPSET; # default
CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION FOR DATABASE OFF; # default
CONFIGURE ENCRYPTION ALGORITHM 'AES128'; # default
CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG DELETION POLICY TO NONE; # default
CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO 'E:\ORACLE\DATABASE\SNCFORCL.ORA';
CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT 'F:\Backup\%U.bak';
Then i took the RMAN backup, now iam shutdown my DB and removed one logfile..
then i tried to startup the DB but it is saying
ORA-00313: open failed for members of log group 3 of thread 1
ORA-00312: online log 3 thread 1: 'E:\ORADATA\ORCL\REDO03.LOG'
So i tried to restore the Database with my rman backup
RMAN> restore database;
But i am unable to restore my logfile in the Datafiles location where as all other datafiles are restored but redo logfiles are not restored.
So, i am unable to recover my DB
Please tell me whether i am doing any mistake, what is the solution for my problem.
Thanks in advance
MahiAll you restored was your datafiles.
Now issue recover database and that will apply the archive logs.
This is in the oracle documentation.
"You must restore backups of these archived logs for recovery to proceed. You can restore either to the default or nondefault location. If you do not have backups, then you must performing incomplete recovery up to an SCN before the first missing redo log and open RESETLOGS."

I am not able to restore spfile from rman backup ;;;Hi,
I would like to know few things
1. How are you setting the db_name ? you can set db_id at RMAN, how are you setting the db_name ?
2. Do you have any default init file at default location ? if yes, is the db_name parameter set correctly in that file ?
Since spfile is yet to be restored, you must set the db_name parameter correctly before you start spfile restore.This can be done with init file at default location which can even contain just one paremeter i.e db_name.
